[Q] 4G LTE Issue (Described inside) - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello everyone,
I have a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 and have been through hell the past month trying to get my phone working again. I have posted a detail of what I have been going through on the Sprint forums, which you can find by googling 4G LTE Antenna Issues on Galaxy S3, but will go ahead and give a quick summary.
Towards the end of May, my phone became extremely hot and I had to send the phone in to Samsung. They replaced the PBA board and sent the phone back to me. Upon receiving the phone, I noticed that i was not getting 4G LTE anymore (I compared it with the other phones on my account, along with going to places which I know I received great LTE coverage). I sent the phone in to Samsung again. Upon receiving it, I noticed that I still did not have LTE. After going back and forth with Sprint and Samsung, I sent the phone in to Samsung again for a third time. The phone came back 2 days ago, and what do you know, no LTE. The one change I did notice is that Samsung updated the ICCID to run on 4G (per their description from the repair tracking website). The ICCID is the one number that is different from when I originally got the phone (DEX, HEX and IMEI are the same). After talking to both companies again yesterday, I was pretty much told by each company that it was the other companies responsibility for the LTE to be working. Sprint did try to reprogram and had me do an activation using SCRTN, while Samsung says that as long as I receive 3G then the 4G LTE issue is on the carrier's end.
As you can imagine, i am extremely frustrated. I have navigated these message boards along with others looking for solutions, but have been unable to come across any. I have not rooted my phone, but do consider myself pretty knowledgable with the phone.
If anyone can give me any advice on what to do, I would greatly appreciate it. It is important to add that I do not have insurance, but that I did purchase the phone at the end of January and it is under Warranty.
Thank you

Well, have to ask, is the phone up to date, with software and including your modem and prl?

Yes, all software is up to date. Samsung did it on their end, and I also did it on my end. I actually spoke with Sprint again about 1 hour ago, and they are going to send a tech to one of the towers that I connect to try to see why my phone will not connect to it. The tech rep mentioned that i have done all the required procedures and that there may be a lock on the device. Anyone experience this?

I had a similar issue to this happen. I had a device that would just not connect to the Network. What I ended up doing was the ##72786# on the dial pad. It worked like a charm.

That is a very useful code to use if anyone is ever having network problems. Just be prepared for a few reboots is all!

that's one of the things that the tech rep from sprint had me test on Wednesday. Unfortunately, it did not work for me. Did you do it more than once?
At this point, I have to wait until Tuesday, at which point Sprint is supposed to call me back and let me know how the results of the technician going to the tower ended up. If anyone is familiar, I believe it is called a "CMT Ticket".

Whenever I've had to use the code, it has worked on the first try. It does cause the device to reboot several times. Well keep us posted on what the Tech comes up with.

will do. i have seen a number of people experience the issue I am going through, so hopefully this will solve it so that other users don't have to go through what I have been going through.

I agree. This is probably the 5th I see someone posting saying that their network connectivity vanishes or is impaired after sending their phone into Samsung. Makes you wonder what the heck they exactly do to your phone.
The Thanks button is just to avoid "THANKS" posts in threads. Nothing more. Don't defeat the purpose of why it was introduced.

Seen plenty of these posts myself. Seems maybe some techs are damaging the antenna during phone disassembly and re assembly I would presume.??

Just did a search. Seems you are spot on. Quick search yielded way to many people reporting the same issue after sending a device in four repair.

The Samsung tech rep that I spoke to the last time was very confident in telling me that if I was receiving 3G, the fact that I was not receiving 4G LTE was not a phone issue, but a carrier issue. He said that the phone uses the same antenna to connect to both towers, so if you are connecting to one, then the antenna is not the issue.
I also found it interesting that Samsung's warranty DOES NOT cover phone replacements, per the Samsung rep. As he explained to me, they only repair phones and do not do phone swaps - those are done at the carrier level, which I find odd (how does a manufacturer not swap phones?)

And you don't think the samsung rep might be misrepresenting something? If not he would be admitting fault.

Most definitely. That did and still has crossed my mind. I actually asked the tech rep from Samsung where I could find a blue print for the phone, as I was under the impression that they were 2 separate antennas, but he says none is available (obviously if I google it, I will find it).

Wanted to provide an update to anyone following my situation.
I received a call on tuesday from the sprint rep checking to see if there had been any changes to my LTE service. I told her that nothing had changed and I still had no LTE. She informed me that the status on my ticket said "PENDING" and that she would call me back. Unfortunately today came and went and I did not receive a call. I was very busy at work and did not have a chance to call Sprint. I will be calling them tomorrow to ser what the latest is.
I will hopefully have some update tomorrow.

Any more info? A friend of mine had the same issue and had to fight sprint left and right for an actual replacement of the device. When the phone was replaced (swapped) by sprint he had no more issues.

This email will serve as the end of this thread. Unfortunately, I did not get the desired results I achieved.
After not hearing anything from the Sprint rep, I finally got fed up and called Sprint again on Friday. The rep who I spoke to said that he did not see a ticket on my account for the CMTS test. He did inform me that usually with these tickets, a rep will put it in, the technicians will go the tower and look at it, and the ticket will disappear and that they usually don't hear back (I found this extremely strange). After going back and forth, I finally hit my "hell with it" mode and decided to do the phone swap. After speaking with more customer service reps, I was able to get statement credits which would at least offset my $50 cost of replacing the phone.
My phone did come in on Tuesday, and I do now have 4G coverage. I am still extremely disappointed and frustrated with both companies, as I want to know why the phone was not working as opposed to just paying $50 and having it swapped. I am not the first person to have this issue, and sadly will not be the last. I now have a refurbished phone after only 4 months for no fault of my own.
I really like the phone, but I am going to have some serious thoughts when my contract is up in purchasing any future item from Samsung or re-upping with Sprint. I was given the runaround from both companies that left me extremely disappointed.
I wish whoever goes through an issue like this in the future better success. Believe me when I say I did a lot of research and really did everything I could on my end.
Thanks for everyone's input/attention.

[SPRINT] GNEX Defective Radio Epidemic POLL

There is a not insignificant amount of people complaining about phones which upon activation (can make and receive calls) cannot receive 3g or 4g Data.
Pertinent Threads:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/414670#414670#414670
http://community.sprint.com/baw/message/415272#415272
about 7 pages of posts from just 2 threads on the front page.
haven't even looked in the general samsung or customer service forums for individual complaints yet.
Observed BEHAVIOUR:
* The phone is unable to maintain a consistent connection to 3G.
* At times it'll connect to 3g. for a few minutes at most then lose the connection and ip address.
* The signal icon doesnt say 3g. just shows bars. either says 1x/RTT in status or Evdo Rev A.
The SHADYNESS:
From the threads above. We discover
Sprint WAS until yesterday (4/24) replacing these defective handsets with new ones over the phone.
On that morning there was a memo instructing support members to tell customers that a "open network ticket" has been opened and that it has nothing to do with the handset.(This is what happened to me tonight.)
DESPITE
1. that I can ESN Swap back to my epic 4g and see everything is working quite well.
2. demo Galaxy Nexus at the stores have their data working perfectly well.
empirically speaking, 1. eliminates the possibility of it being a activation/provision issue,
2. eliminates the possibility that its LTE/3g activation related or a widespread network issue.
Sample Experiences from people in the sprint forums.

Finally Sunday, someone finally acknowledged a widespread "manufacturing defect," for which they are now authorizing return and replacement. Another person on my account received his Galaxy Nexus and his is OK, so it was a 50/50 shot! Mine was shipped today and they sent me a return label to send back the defective phone.

I've so far counted 31 instances of people having a faulty phone in my limited research on this topic. If we take into account the small microcosm forum users are of regular users. We can extrapolate that there is a widespread defect. adding the factor that sprint has come up with a "story" for their customer support reps to use to tell customers it will be 48 - 72 hours before getting a answer. We might surmise this is because they don't wish to use up current limited stock on exchanges of faulty phones.
I'm curious how much this has affected any of you.

HEY OP DUDE. Sprint won't replace my phone! Store says stock it has is for sale not for repairs/exchange! HULK ANGRY
Banner down dude.
I got a fool proof plan for you. Bro.
edit: Got it replaced at a store. SUCCESS!
I didn't even have to go any further than Recourse 1.
Framework for getting a exchange/repair.
Note that while doing all/any of the below. You must remain polite, calm and civil at all times.
Everyone you are talking to with the exception of store managers tend to just be "Cogs" in the machine.
They are not the source of the problem. They are people. You catch more flies with honey than vinegar.
by being civil, understanding and reasonable. You negate their ability to excuse and ignore
any fallout from their behaviour by saying you were a entitled irrational angry psycho customer.
1. Find a Corporate Sprint Service/Repair Store nearby. Call ahead first. Ask if they have galaxy nexus in stock. Tell them thanks. Hangup.
Bring a notepad and pen with you to the store. Explain the situation and how it's a known problem. (you have a open network ticket but that you find it strange that their gnex in store works.) ask them how it can be a network issue. "Clearly it has to be the phone right?" ask them if they can exchange the phone. if they say no. ask why. If they say they have none in stock. state that you called before hand and they did. If he says they are for sale only. Take your pen and note the lie and reason. Look up, Smile, ask for their name, sprint id. and their manager, his name and his id and the store number. Should they ask why. Simply say so you can have it for reference and documentation to when you speak to executive services to help get your problem resolved.
Remain in the store.
2.Call customer support refer to your open network ticket, ask them how it can be a network ticket if the stores galaxy nexus works perfectly. Ask if they could ship you a replacement or ask the store to exchange yours.
Should that fail. Run the same routine you did above. get first guy's id. if he makes his manager close the call. get his name and id if necessary.
3. Google these keywords: sprint consumerist executive customer service
Find the number
Call it while you are still in the store in front of the employees or manager. (Be cool.)
Politely explain what's gone on. and the steps you've taken to resolve. (and how you've exhausted everything reasonably )
and if they lied about it being a known issue or whatever. indicate their failings in a factual manner. give the lady their store ID, the employee and managers names as well as your customer service rep's and his manager's id. (if they lied about it being a known issue and about the change in policy)
and that you've tried to be reasonable about escalating the issue yet
These employees have been deceptive and unhelpful despite every reasonable step you've taken.
More interested in having stock to sell and maintaining numbers than customer care. blah blah blah
If the store employees don't try to stop you before you call or during the call.
it's pretty much guaranteed exec services will take care of you, Punish the store if they were unhelpful and lied.
and get a working phone for you faster.
FOOLPROOF!
or so I hope. but as mike tyson said. "Everybody's got a plan til they get KTFO."
Could you post some more info about your phone to see if there's a pattern somewhere? eg. baseband version, locked or unlocked, have you flashed anything, etc
updated OP with pertinent info.

I am having dropped call issues and I thought maybe I would try something other than a factory data reset. Does a dialer code reset do more than just wipe your phone's memory? Which dialer codes did you use on your phone to do a reset?

The answer to your questions are here:

Note ignore the *# stuff and remember the number reference for what you want to access.
in our phone the format is *#*#(code here)#*#*
with activation on the second #*
The codes are ways to get at the CDMA diagnostic stuff. Debug menus
view signal stats, etc.
You will need your MSL code to see or edit some of them.
You can get that by first rooting.
go to your Android Market and download Terminal Emulator.
And Type in "su" (for super user access)
And then type "getprop ril.MSL" (then enter to get you Device's MSL code)
a EPST reset deletes the activation information, data profile, as well as wipes all data making it do the hands free activation/provisioning thing upon reboot.

Thanks very much for the help! I believe I found the code that I'm looking to use. However, I'm having a hard time getting the code to go through.
"*#767*3855# - Factory Format - WARNING!!!
Will go to Hands Free Activation
Nice if you'd like to reactivate your phone, it will do so automatically".
All the numbers that I put in the dialer simply disappear after adding the second #* . Any suggestions? Thanks.

Sorry to clog up the thread.. but now that I'm rooted, I can't get the MSL. None of the apps in the market are working and Terminal Emulator isn't doing anything when I enter the commands. The app "Get My MSL" gives me the error "could not get property ril.MSL" any help? Perhaps it's because I'm running a stock-rooted rom? I'll try a custom one..
so you typed
su
getprop ril.MSL
did not work?
cap sensitive. MSL need to be capped
if that does not work for some strange reason.
do the social engineering way. call sprint. go to activation line
say you need to manually activate your phone and need the msl code.

Count me in the dead 3g batch. Phone works great otherwize. I growing fond of my wifi Gnex tablet :'(. Fwiw, all you guys looking for a MSL, there's a universal for us try 311324
I get the data mess ups when I update profile and prl. But then it comes back on. On cm9 I kept getting the 1x thing.
Received a replacement due to no 3g data, replacement exhibits the same problems as the original.
It was determined that two devices doing the same thing for one person was a network issue. A ticket was opened and then promptly closed by the network team siting a known product issue.
No time frame on fix and sprint not willing to send out another device.
Fun times!

They MUST think I'm stupid...

Sooooo...here's the deal:
I'm in the Houston area. There is a constant LTE signal here, that I rely on for my tablet and my pc (paying overages doesn't matter). However, after every phone call, I lose LTE, and just the 4G signal is there, but its slower than 3G. After a reboot, the LTE comes back and my speeds are restored...
I tried chatting with an ATT rep, they of course tried to blame it on "spotty coverage and tower malfunction in your area". Yeah, sure. She said the reboot is re-registering my phone and picking up a new tower. After questioning this, she then put the blame on a rogue application. After that, she then started saying that if I travel I might not have the same signal. After telling her that this happens anywhere, even when I'm at home, she said started explaining the data that I've used this month, and that I have data left to use.
EDIT: She asked me to factory reset, and give it a try. I reset my phone, went through setup, and placed a call. After the call, no internet. I rebooted, LTE service came up. When I told her what happened after she specifically requested I perform those actions, she then told me that a factory reset phone may not work for up to 15 minutes. I'm officially done.
How about you guys? Anything remotely useful to add since apparently this isn't a common issue?

Call att. Go through their spiel. Then get mad cause they can't help you. Threaten to cancel your service. They well either cave immediately or transfer you to the dept that will give you what you want, which is a replacement phone. Btw, its called the customer retention department (for a reason).

it could just be a corrupted radio on his phone, i wonder if he just needs to change radios or odin the phone back to 100% stock
I knew it was normal because my other phone (GNex) does that as well...but LTE never comes back on my SGS3. I went back to stock a long time ago because although I hate the TouchWiz interface, i use the 'motions' ALOT (especially the direct call from messaging and the swipe to message/call), and even after going back to stock AND doing a factory reset it wouldn't work. Of course, I'm sure that as soon as I get into the store tomorrow its going to work like its supposed to, as always, but even though it doesn't seem like a huge deal because our phones boot up quickly, its still an inconvenience to have to reboot the phone after every phone call just to get my LTE back

What he said... At&t doesn't offer voice over LTE or VoLTE yet. It will also wait until any open data sessions have stopped before bumping back up to LTE.
PS... Don't be a **** to customer service because they can't get 30,000 people smarter than you. We all know that would be impossible.

Happens to me too. I usually put it on airplane mode and then it comes back. Not a big deal since my Internet still works. Just not lte

I like that you fell for the factory reset; it really pisses me off when they tell me to do that. If it work yesterday and the day before and suddenly it doesn't work then guess what is not going to fix it, that's right, a factory reset. I know there are a lot of legitimate reasons to factory reset but they throw that out like it's nothing, as if I didn't just spend 10 hours setting up the phone just the way I wanted it. If the software is so easily corrupted then just give me my money back and I will go down the road.
That said I believe this phone is a wonderful machine but if you have a factory producing hundreds of units every hour they are bound to eventually have a defect. But every person who purchased in atrix 2 should have been given a refund and an apology.

What was so bad about the Atrix2?
This sounds like Samsung fault, hardly at&t.
It had issues addressing the SD card . It would often lose applications that you had installed, you also would not be able to access your music, pics, or videos on the SD card at random times. Everybody and their brother had a different solution for it. The biggest consensus is that it was class 6 and above causing the problem. But if that is true then motorola should have done their own beta testing and reported that. All in all the phone was a nightmare and there are forums filled to its failure. I purchase the atrix HD and it did the exact same thing.

15 minutes would be nice. It takes me weeks to get all my settings put back in all my apps; my email accounts set back up; used to have to remake my grocery list but the app I've been using for years finally got a sync capability; and I have to re-beat all the levels on angry birds (very important etc. etc...

[q] att galaxy s3 screen lock bypass

I found 2 phones along the interstate today where i work that both work still. A pantech and a Galaxy S III.(both ATT). they both have screen locks on them though. anyway to bypass these locks?

You don't say, but I'm assuming that there is no information on either screen while it is locked, that indicates who the phones belong to. You might be able to find out whose they are by contacting ATT and providing the IMEI numbers. Anything more than that is for the XDA pros to come up with.
the reason i want to bypass is to get a contact out of each phone and call them to get them back to the owners. last time i returned a phone to a store it never got returned...(i know this because i dated a girl that worked there and she said that when she worked there they never got returned to owners). i tried to call ATT but they can't release any of the info due to privacy restrictions.(which is good and understandable)
Unrelated: I found a phone like that one time. No lock but I called "Home" and setup to return phone. It was a couple who said the phone belonged to their daughter who'd died in a car accident there a couple days before. Weird.

I do not know about Pantech but perhaps you can try Samsung regarding the Galaxy S3. If the owner registered the phone with them they might "work" with you to help contact the owner regarding the phone. Of course I doubt they will give out information but perhaps they are willing to play "middle man".

If you're really concerned about getting the phone back to the owner, call the carrier and tell them you found devices you want to return.
They'll send you boxes with return shipping labels, then they'll contact the owner of the device to return it.
Although it sounds like you've already made up your mind about what you're going to do.

Verizon to hotline all Note 7s on 1/31/2017?

Just got this text:
FREE VZW MSG: Reminder: Your Samsung Note7 has been recalled due to an overheating risk. Because your safety is important to us, your Note7 will stop working on or about 1/31/2017. To prevent this service interruption, please immediately upgrade to a new device by visiting your original place of purchase. In addition, to avoid being charged for your Note7, please return it to the original place of purchase within 5 days. For more information, please visit go.vzw.com/note7faq
Does this mean they will hotline all remaining Note 7's based on IMEI/ID? Or is this related to another update?
Did anyone else get this?
And do we really need to return it to avoid full charge? I have read here that this is just a threat - that they can't really collect payment under recall law precedent.
Funny how they reference to return it in the "box" I called twice about and never got. Bastards.
I got this text message earlier today indicating 1/26/2017 is the date. I never received a box from VZW or Samsung either.
...I'm assuming that changing the phone's IMEI (say, to that of my broken Note3) would prevent this blacklisting/hotlining from bricking my phone's network access?

Have you been able to successfully change your IMEI thus far? The apps I've tried so far either need ROOT or don't support Samsung devices...
Found a method involving QPST (modifying the hex IMEI stored in "nv_data") but haven't tried it yet.

That tool is from 2009 from what I see.
You guys are out of luck...they are going to permanently hotline all outgoing calls to customer care...there is no possible way around that. I am sitting in the Verizon store right now

and the news just picked it up - with confirming details: http://fortune.com/2017/01/17/samsung-galaxy-note-7-verizon/
I also received this text indicating my device will be turned off on 1/31/2017. I have received constant text messages from Verizon threatening to shut down my phone, return it, or pay full retail price. It's a shame - I've already purchased the phone at full retail price from third party, so they can't charge me full price. Would they really ban the MEID of the devices off the network?

I believe we are no longer able to use the note 7. Last chance to change it as the IMEI is but DO?
I don't imagine blocked updates will stop this one - ?
I read they are going to start redirecting your outgoing calls to customer service

I just spoke with a Verizon rep about the latest test message and was told that they are not blocking IMEI's. He said they are not allowed to do that. He actually seemed a little annoyed and tried to convince me that Samsung is the one that everyone should be upset about, not Verizon. Samsung is the one pushing out these updates to disable our phones and Verizon is innocent to all this craziness. Yeah right! He said that Samsung has something in the works to disable the Note 7's but does not know what it is. If it's in the form of another update, I say we might be Ok if we have the updates blocked.

Why would they need to block your imei when they can just route every call you make to customer service where you can talk to someone who doesn't know what they are talking about.
In the next two weeks they will make it so no one keeps their note 7 for use as a cell phone.

Yeah the guy I spoke to said they are not blocking IMEI #'s so my thinking is they are doing it in their end. So then I figured, well okay,. I will just bite the bullet and get the Pixel XL...not so fast. Backordered until 3/10. Complete mess. Time to switch to tmobile.
Although I wonder what would happen if you switched out sim cards and kept doing it if it would mess with their system.

Not with the note 7 right? None of these carriers are going to treat this any differently. They all want to be done with a mess they didn't start. Can't blame them. This all falls at Samsungs feet.

Question Can send sms on Verizon but can't receive messages. Any fix?

I've tried using shortcut master and accessing the telephony bands settings in the Red Magic 6 settings that isn't viewable. So far, no luck. I tried setting it to evdo, cdma, etc.
Anyone find a fix or have found a workaround for this?
I'm having the same issue. So far I have stumped the techs at my local Verizon store and also tech support. I have an escalated ticket with phone support so hopefully I'll get some answers. In the meantime someone on reddit mentioned when they got a new SIM card it worked. They were going from an old 4G phone SIM to a 5G. This was my situation but did not fix it for me. Worth a shot if you haven't tried it yet.
Your never gonna get sms working properly on Verizon.

Update: I talked to tier 2 tech support at Verizon and had my ticket escalated to the Network Repair Bureau. From what it sounds is that they need to enable CDMA less on the Red Magic 6 but aren't able to until the device is added to their list, which they are going to do. ETA is 1-5 days.
The tech said they had a ticket exactly like this before and were successful so there is some hope here. I'll continue to pursue this and update again once I have more.

Good luck with that. Vz are diks with non approved phone. Another way around it, is activate a one plus, and they will add CDMA less instantly, then pop sim in rm6

If it comes down to that, I'll give it a try. I don't have a One Plus on hand but maybe I can get them to try it at the Verizon store.
