Im about to flash myn's new rom, can someone tell me a good way to backup my apps,contacts,and messages?

Titanium backup I THINGK IS GOOD ......ON YOUR COMPTER MAKE BACK UP FORM UR SD TO A FOLDER

I thought that was just for apps

Save contacts to Google. SMS Backup and Restore free on the market.

Titanium will back up apps and all data, including contacts, WiFi, etc. Can't recommend it enough.

Question about Titamium Back-up

Please explain the difference between these options:
"Restore missing apps with data" (I assume this restores all the apps and the information within them. It should restore apps and they should act just like they did before I wiped, correct?)
"Restore all system data" (Exactly what data does this restore?)
"Restore missing apps + all system data" (this is obviously both of from above)
Here is my situation: I am installing a ROM (Synergy) and there are some small issues going on once I use Titanium to restore my apps and data. I played with the ROM before the restore and everything that was acting wierd is fine. These issues don't exsist until I restore. It must be some system settings. Mainly I have password information in my "Mail" app that only my IT guy has and getting it again is going to be a pain in the ass so I dont want to lose that data.
Any help is appreciated

That's correct.
It's not a good idea to restore system data across different ROMs as it can cause problems.
System data can be anything from apps that are in /system to the data that comes with them.
The problem is, that system data can conflict with your current ROMs system data.
And then you get weird issues like you are having.

If you're switching ROMs, you absolutely should not.
Even if you're not I wouldn't restore system data unless you have a specifc reason to.
Text messages and call logs can be backed up via apps and most of the other system data is just settings that can be easily set again.
Plus, if you're changing ROMs those settings may not exist...causing issues.

Ok...understood.
Through all of this reflashing and restoring I've been able to retain the account/password info in the "Mail"app. Hopefully it will still be there after this. I'll let you know.

Hey, before you do anything, you have to back up both the mail app settings and the accounts and sync settings...otherwise it won't have the information to sync.
Go into Titanium backup, select the mail app and back up data. Select the Accounts and sync settings and back up data as well.
Hopefully you get this before you do anything.
Sorry, I missed the part about your mail credentials in the OP.

When you backup or restore, use App + Data., and only backup and restore the apps you have d/l'd to your phone. They'd be the ones that are white. Can't get much easier.

So I just select the mail app in Titanium and select backup? Where is account and sync settings in Titanium to backup?
When I restore apps + data after I reflash, am I going to have to restore the mail app data separately?

Open Titanium back up.
Click backup/restore
Click on "Account and Sync settings" and choose back up.
Scroll down to your email app.
Click it and choose back up as well.
Flash whatever ROM.
Restore those two apps data. [not the apps themselves, just data]

I somehow lost the info during all this. Can I reload a previous nandroid back up that I put on my pc? (i dont really even know what nandroid backs up....lol)

Yes. Just put it back on your sdcard, go into the recovery and choose restore.

You just restore, it will recopy your old setup. All IMGs that were backed up.

I'm 99.99% positive that it wipes first but I don't nandroid much.
You can, it's not like it will take you more than a few extra seconds.

Titanium Backup
I have done all the steps for Titanium backup to restore mail settings, etc. Eventually I came the realization that not worth trying to save 15 minutes of time of entering in 8-10 account’s info. Most of the roms have issues, eliminating the issue where Titanium backup caused a problem across roms is worth a few minutes of additional setup. My process is run Full Titanium backup, full nandroid backup, copy to PC, VR Superwipe, re-partition SD (complete wipe), copy back the Titanium backup folder and new rom as well as superwipe, run superwipe, flash new rom. I never have any of the issues that many people report, then I restore apps, some with data from Titanium (eg. Games, etc. with saved data.) Bottom line I use Titanium to backup and restore user installed apps only, though I take a full backup.

Here is something that might help. Are you trying to preserve the email account setup for an Exchange server? Or is this another email account type (pop/imap)?
I looked at my backups from Titanium, figuring that the server setup for my Exchange mail must be in there somewhere. After some poking around I found the file that contains everything including the password in clear-text. I know this is the password because I know my password.
I was able to find this in the file:
com.htc.android.mail-20110816-035214.tar.gz
Look for a similar file... the numbers are the date and time of the backup so they will be different for you.
I browsed the file with WinRAR (you can use any program that can open a tar) and found the file:
\data\data\com.htc.android.mail\.\shared_prefs\EASSetupWizard.xml
In this file I see something like:
<string name="password">
xxxyyyzzz
</string>
Where xxxyyyzzz is my exchange email password.
I found that the passwords for all accounts (including POP, IMAP, etc are in /data/data/com.htc.android.mail/databases/mail.db in the accounts table but the passwords are not clear-text. I think it just happens to be in the EASSetupWizard.xml file for the Exchange setup due to some sloppy programming on the part of HTC.

You should not restore data from a nandroid to a different rom, it can goof all types of stuff. They make apps that backup data.

Should have used titanium backup or something like that first.

What type of data do you want to restore? Nandroid just makes an image of your old system that can be used only to restore everything just how it was.

Yeah, you're right. Haven't flashed a ROM in a long time, and just couldn't remember the necessary steps. I do have Titanium backup. Doesn't do me any good now though. LOL

Not sure what I was thinking when I performed the Nandroid backup. Just wondering if there was a way to get my messages back. App data isn't a biggie for me.

Well do a nandroid of your current rom. Go back to your old rom with the nandroid you said you have. Download an app to back up your SMS make. Go back to the nandroid of the rom you want to use and redownload the app you used to backup your SMS and then restore.
I know is a lot of work but if yours SMS are that important then you will do it.

Yeah if sms is all you wanna save handcent SMS offers an account that backs them up. Also you can save a vcard of your contacts with most contact managers and easily restore contacts that way. Good luck!

I'm using gmail for my contacts, so they synch'ed immediately; not a problem. The sms messages aren't that important. Just thought there might be a way. If I decide that I need anything I'll do what Kratz17 proposed.

Help Please!!!! MD5 Mismatch

Hello All,
So I attempted to install my first ROM today and it was successful. Prior to installing I made a nandroid backup and it looks like everything went smoothly.
I tried out the new ROM and it wasn't to my liking. I want to restore to my Stock ROM but when going to backup and restore in ClockworkMod Recovery and clicking restore it says Checking MD5 sums then says MD5 mismatch!
What does this mean and how do I fix it? Thanks.

I figured out what I did wrong. When I made the nandroid I renamed the file and put spaces in the file name. When I renamed the file again with no spaces and tried another restore it worked perfectly. Thanks.

Yup. CWM backup files can't have spaces in them. Are you the one who was looking for suggestions to try custom ROMs? Did you not like DW?

Yes, I was the one looking for suggestions to try ROMs. I actually liked DW. It was easy to install and booted fast even on the first boot. My main issues was that the Google play store kept force closing and wouldn't work. Also, there was no Gmail app. I know I can download it from the play store, but since it kept force closing it wouldn't work. Also since I am a Telus user the data icon shows 3G and not 4G for some reason. I know it's just cosmetic but I would like it to say 4G. I reverted back to stock for now.

If you know how to clear application data that should fix the force close. Roms always have the odd problem here and there upon first installation but they can easily be fixed and not touched again. If you're interested in trying again I could walk you through your issues, the end product should be a ROM with absolutely zero stability issues.

The only other issue was when I backed up my mms/SMS messages through Titanium Backup and restored after running DW it didn't take for some reason. All of my text conversations were gone. Also my call log was empty as well. What programs should I back up to restore this info? Also, I guess I could backup Gmail and restore that as well correct? Again your help is much appreciated. I use SMS backup and restore, rather than tb, others have had issues restoring texts through tb too. If you want to restore call logs, call log backup and restore has worked well for others but I can't personally attest to that since I don't restore call logs between roms.
No need to backup gmail since it's all email in the cloud right?
The only things I backup are my apps (using titanium so I don't have to re download them, restoring through TB is much faster, just make sure you're not restoring any system data though) and my SMS.

You aren't supposed to install any system data? Because I restored Gallery, Google Play Store, Maps, SMS/MMS, Voice Command, Voice Recorder, Voice Search and Youtube.
Those apps were all considered system data, but I wanted to keep them so that's why I backed them up. Was I incorrect in doing this? Thank you.

System data usually doesn't play well across different ROMs. It's usually advised to not do that as it will cause random force closes. When you go into TB and go to batch operations, Just run "Restore missing apps with data" and you'll be fine.
Restoring data is okay, as long as it's for apps. This is your save data for games, etc. System data on the other hand, causes problems. Anything that isn't restored through "Restore missing apps with data" can be downloaded or is already included on the ROM.

I use Mybackup Pro - you can backup both contacts and messages

I did also get the mismatch recently. I don't know if it was a glitch. In my rom manager it shows cwm 5.0,2,7, but I recently flashed cwm touch. From the rom manager, I booted into recovery, and backed up my rom. Flashed a different rom, didn't like it, and tried to restore the one I had just backed up. I got the error, with no changes to the file name. So after completely reinstalling the previous rom, I shutdown, and booted into recovery with the volume up/down/power, backed up, and was later able to restore. It seemed to matter how I booted into cwm.

If this happens to you again without you changing any names, reflash your recovery and if your on the touch recovery then flash the old recovery.

{Help} flashed nandroid and dont have my apps

I just came from a jelly bean from. I did nandroid restore to go to cm9. Im back on cm9 but None of my apps are on my phone. What did i do wrong? Any suggestions? I have twrp recovery.

sounds like before you made the nandroid backup you didnt checkmark to backup the data partion. it wont back it up unless you tell it to. whats the size of your backup?

the size of the back up is 4.71 GB... I dont know what the problem is. I dont remember clicking or unclicking backup data partion. I was just so used to using cwm recovery.

at 4.71gb(that is huge!), your apps should be there, with their data too. you try restoring it again? watch the restore, see if there is an error when on the data part.

I just restored this back up for the like the 3rd time today. I tried my other back ups also and none of them restored my apps and data. It said the restore was successful. there were no errors when restoring the data. this is what it said
[DAta]
skipping md5 based on user setting.
wiping data without wiping /data/media
...restoring data
... done restoring...
[data done(386 seconds)]
I didnt see any error messages on the log.
when the phone came on i didnt have my background. I have the stock live wall paper showing. google was asking for location consent again. Disabled apps were enabled again. Its like i didnt even have a backup. Its kind of just like stock. only certain things actually backed up. (for example lockscreen settings, (but no lock code just the options i set it as), it still has the message i set for the lockscreen,) My phone is not even logged in to my google account which is werid.

that backup is huge. i have a lot of apps, a lot! and lots of big games with lots of data, and my biggest nandroid took only 2gb. when you made the backup, was it with cwm recovery or twrp? my only other guess is that there is a corruption somewhere, or its too big to fit in the right partitions.

I made the back up with twrp. I think i do have a back up with cwm but its very old. I didnt see any error messages so maybe it is too big. i do only have like 10gb of free space. maybe the reason my nandroid was so big is because of my google play music? (isnt the offline music saved as data for the app?)
Should i delete everything and try to restore the nandroid?

ahh.. google music, makes sense. it could possibly be that you dont have enough space.

I think the offline music is saved in the "sdcard" location that isn't normally part of a nandroid backup. Clean that up for sure.
Try cleaning up as much space as possible on the internal while leaving the backup intact. If you have at least 6 GB free the restore should go fine.
Plan B: Titanium Backup Pro allows you to open a nandroid backup and restore apps with app data.

I currently have about 14.51GB of space free out of 28.13GB. the backup still didnt restore my data. I guess im going to have to try the titanium back up pro. which sucks because i dont want to really buy the pro version.

No, cache has nothing to do with restoring apps+data.
