Titanium will back up apps and all data, including contacts, WiFi, etc. Can't recommend it enough.

Use clockworkmod to do a backup, backs up the entire phone or titanium backup to backup just apps and data.
For just SMS I use WaveSecure.

Any of these requires root?
I reckon, clockwork needs root.
Titanium Backup needs root too, fyi
and, so, as you require root for both, have clockworkmod create a nandroid backup...
the created backup is stored on your sd card, make sure you copy it to another location as well (in case your sd card gets crippled )
Seems like both app needs root.

nope, it does not seem like....
they DO require root...
also, quick question for this thread:
if i create a nandroid backup, do i still need to worry about my apps completely working (and therefore should also create a Ti backup)?

Nandroid backup is indispensable if everything goes tits up, so I make one prior to flashing a new ROM, at least then I know worst case scenario I can get back to where I am now. I use Ti to restore apps and, more importantly, their associated data after doing a clean install of a ROM, also I can schedule Nandroid to regularly backup apps and data for me
Hello,
I just rooted my Wildfire and got CWM recovery. Now am I wondering if it's possible to flash a new ROM on my device (CyanogenMod 7) and keep all my current installed apps and stuff.

You'll most probably encounter a bootloop. Use backup apps like Titanium to backup your apps. Other stuff on your SD Card like music, videos and pictures wont be affected.

Nope

Nope, as said, use SMS Backup from the Market to do that, and backup that using Titanium.

Hi,
I just flashed the McSenseless ROM and I can't remember how to best restore my data. I did perform a Nandroid backup before I flashed the ROM.
Thanks,
Bruce

You should not restore data from a nandroid to a different rom, it can goof all types of stuff. They make apps that backup data.
Should have used titanium backup or something like that first.

What type of data do you want to restore? Nandroid just makes an image of your old system that can be used only to restore everything just how it was.

Yeah, you're right. Haven't flashed a ROM in a long time, and just couldn't remember the necessary steps. I do have Titanium backup. Doesn't do me any good now though. LOL

Not sure what I was thinking when I performed the Nandroid backup. Just wondering if there was a way to get my messages back. App data isn't a biggie for me.

Well do a nandroid of your current rom. Go back to your old rom with the nandroid you said you have. Download an app to back up your SMS make. Go back to the nandroid of the rom you want to use and redownload the app you used to backup your SMS and then restore.
I know is a lot of work but if yours SMS are that important then you will do it.
Good luck my friend

Yeah if sms is all you wanna save handcent SMS offers an account that backs them up. Also you can save a vcard of your contacts with most contact managers and easily restore contacts that way. Good luck!

I'm using gmail for my contacts, so they synch'ed immediately; not a problem. The sms messages aren't that important. Just thought there might be a way. If I decide that I need anything I'll do what Kratz17 proposed.
Thanks everyone. Really appreciate the insights!

Am I the only one having an issue with a advance restore of data after upgrading to a ICS rom? How do I go about just restoring contacts, sms and other data without causing a boot loader problem.

Restore your GB backup and go to the playstore and download sms backup and call log backup apps. They work great and save everything in xml format. And you cant restore data from a GB rom to an ICS rom.
One easy way I always do to backup my contacts and sms is go into contacts, then select options and tap backup and backup to sd card.
Then factory restore/ install a new rom and then just restore your contacts from your sd card.
Hope I helped you out.
titanium backup will work in most cases. restore app first, and if you absolutely must, restore data for apps one at a time in case any apps dont play nice.
Thanks guys

For reference when the ROM has a different base, you should avoid advance restoring because well... Different base. You can usually restore user apps+data with back up apps though

Yes contacts sync through google
No, apps will not carry over between roms regardless of their location. Look into titanium backup or similar apps
Again, titanium backup. For one click restores, you'll need the pro version. Well worth it.

Yes a Nandroid is and exact copy of your phone at the time of the backup so if it was on your phone when you did the backup it will be on there after the restore.

after I backupd to original can I restore to the current ROM / data I am using now?
I use SMS Backup and Restore to make a backup of my messages prior to flashing a ROM that I want to keep for a bit. TiBu has given me some weird problems and system instability if I restore apps+data, especially between different ROM bases, which is what I would assume would be required for it to restore your text messages.
I'd backup current ROM, restore previous, d/l SMS B&R, backup messages, restore current ROM, d/l SMS again (or pull the apk and just reinstall.. whatever), then restore messages. Problem solved, and you'll have an xml file of your messages which you could save on a computer or something.
