Latest update- slowing down internet and battery drain - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

First of all, as this is my first post, I would like to say hello to everybody on the forum.
I am wondering if you can help me- I read some topics on this forum and didn't find a solution to my problems.
Two months ago I bought a note 2 with 4.1.2 version software.
Two weeks ago I had a notification about a upgrade and I accepted it thinking that it will be 4.2.2.
To my surprise the version of the software didin't change and it still is 4.1.2.
From that moment my problems started- my battery drains faster than it did before and I have some internet issues.
After a while of usage the speed of my wifi internet slows down till it finally stops working even though the wifi connection is still on (connected to the internet).
I have to turn the wifi off an on and than it starts working immediately.
What can cause these problem, is it possible to fix them?
I guess I don't have to mention how irritated I am with this fact making my Note 2 useless in some cases.
Thank you for your help.

[Q] Singal/Radio affected by ROM???

Not sure if other users have seen this, but I found something interesting last night...
Since assurion screwed me and replaced my stolen amoled with slcd my options were somewhat limited in ROM selection. Skyraider was my goto previously.
I have been using Jaeger since my replacement got here about a month ago, and consistently have been having signal/radio issues. Data would randomly stop working, airplane mode would not work to recover, no signal at my desk, etc.. Battery poppin was a standard.
Last night I installed INCRom, and while the transitions & keyboard are driving me nuts the ROM itself is super fast, feels like a new phone. The reason for the post is, for the first time since I got the phone I have been able to wifi tether for longer then 4 mins without Data being disconnected. I was intermittently receiving e-mails in the train and full signal at my desk. I'm wondering if this somehow related to the ROM? Obviously no scientific testing has been done.
Ya, this problem has been poppin up where 3G would just drop out. If you really like Jaeger, then try this fix. It might help, but I haven't personally tried it out.

Thanks... that's what I get for not keeping up... I'm going to take the weekend, if my kid can keep herself busy with her gifts to write my own...

[Q] Unstable 3G problem

Hello,
For my first post on this forum so I introduce myself, I live in the region of Liège in Belgium, I have 20 years and I just bought 3 months now I9300 galaxy s3, here's my question and I think I 'm not the only one to encounter this problem VERY LARGE because it is really very serious for a phone like the GS3
I'm running 4.1 JB Polish, first I check that my problems come from the phone and not my sim card .. Just as my old BB 5520 I never had any problems, and I notice that when I encounter problems if I cut back on the 3g and its re works ..
So to start 3/4 problems are encountered with the Facebook application.
What happens? Worse than slow internet modem 56k, break connection without stop I have to refresh each time without success and again he told me that there is no connection when I'm on 3G ...
I refer to her: network-3g-unstable-SGS3-t19656.html
I have a can chippoter but nothing happens
Almost IMPOSSIBLE to access facebook via 3g, and my web pages I often update 5.6x before something
PS: I'm not very good in english so please excuse me
Thank you so mutch
no person has met the same problem as me? Strange
This question is probably better suited in the I9300 GS3 forum, a moderator should be by at some point to move this.
I had already put in the I9300 forum but have moved here, nobody has the same problem as me? Reassure me that I am not the only one I have yet seen many post on this forum talking about the same problem of instability 3g ..

[Q] GN2 Battery Performance Degradation after Update

Hello
I have a AT&T Note2 that I got late November. Battery Performance was fabulous. I just recently got the update to 4.1.2 OTA and there was some sort of upgrade or maintenance just prior to the 4.1.2 update.
I immediately noticed a difference in battery performance. It was substantially less than what I had on 4.1.1. I cant get any straight answers from Samsung or AT&T, there is no comprehensive log for the update so its hard to figure out whats going on.
Same software load as on 4.1.1. I did notice that after the update to 4.1.2 there were substantially more items in manage apps> running than what was in 4.1.1.
Samsung claims the root cause is the update to the OS and a change to the wifi radio and software.
Does anyone know what really is going on. At&T is a lost cause and no help whatsoever.
Thank you
I will be interested what you find out as I am experienceing the same issue. I went from 95% to 65% overnight doing nothing (WiFi on). Earlier today I was losing about 2-3% battery every 15 minutes doing nothing and did some research. All I could find out was to turn off all location services and since I don't get Wifi at work, turn off WiFi while here. This helped some, but still would like to find out what is going on. My iphone was a battery hog in the end of its life and my new GN2 lasts barely as long as my 2 year old iphone did. Not a happy camper right now.

Hi, I'm hopeful one of the Senior Members or Mod's will run down a answer as well as a comprehensive change add-delete and enhancement log regarding the 4.1.2 update. All I can say is I have not added anything my daily use is the same..no games. I disabled all the att bloat wae other than hot spots. I sort of paid attention to my running apps in 4.1.1, and now in 4.1.2 there are many more things theree that wernt prior to this update. I didnt have to disable anything prior to this update.
The answer is not in disabling bloat apps. The answer is in the log that shows what was done with the update.
I hope someone can get that because it holds the key to the answers we are looking for.
Who knows maybe one of the developers will read this thread and be able to help.
try a battery pull and obviously reboot. Download the Gsam battery monitor from the market. I think it is free. It dumbs down a lot of stuff and pretty much tells you what is taking up your battery. It does a much better job than the stock battery checker. After an hour or so, the longer the better, it will show you some apps or processes that are the culprit.
Battery stats app is a paid app in the market but I think it is free on this xda site somewhere for members. That appears to be a very comprehensive battery monitoring apps with wakelocks and it gets very complicated for a novice such as myself.
can you provide additional details on your situation, for example:
what's your baseline comparison, e.g., before: 18 hrs use with 4 hours screen time, after 13 hours use 4 hours screen time
are you rooted (i suspect not)?
have you gone into Settings->Battery to see which apps, etc., are using your battery?
do you have a lot of music, pictures, etc on your phone?
not an answer to your question, but... have you considered performing a hard reset on your device and then testing battery life with at clean slate?
looking at your battery stats is a better indicator of what could be causing poor battery life. i'm on the same release as you and my battery life has been the same if not better. also download better battery stats to see if you have wake-lock issues. i'm averaging 16-20 hours per charge with 6-9 hours screen time, about 150 emails daily and 35-90 minutes in phone calls.
So yesterday at 19 hours of use (maybe 2 hours total of emails, web surfing, and using a couple apps, music for an hour at the gym) I still had 32% left. Not bad. However, my wifi was off all day, even at home, and I kept my location services turned off. So tomorrow I am going to test it with Wifi on at home and my location services and see what happens. The Gsam battery app i used yesterday was pretty cool although at first I wasn't sure because it said that the app was using 15%. But as the day progressed it never went over 4%. Still new to the android platform, but learning.

I APPRECIATE the response however I would like to know what was done with the 4.1.2 upgrade, what changed, enhanced or whatever as well as the AT&T maint just prior to the 4.1.2 upgrade. Nothing was disabled, I was runn8ng the same exact software load, same apps, no games, and wifi wS constantly on. While disabling bloatware, shutting down this and that, turning off wifi at this point is helpful, its not a acceptable answer as to what happened.
This forum has some of the most respected developers and computer genius's around. Whenever you ask for something and everyone else comes up empty, the first thing you hear is go to XDA.
My Galaxy Note2 had the most incredible battery time of any device I've ever owned prior to the updates. Im also pissed because I didnt even know that the red and grey arrows and the connecting to dnr server was AT&T doing a update. There was no forewarning.
The Note2 is still fabulous to me, I just want to understand what has happened and why. I am not asking for a say in what they did, certainly this is my phone, I believe that I should be entitled at least to know what transpired.
There should be no problem producing a comprehensive change log with a lay person level explanation.
I was getting 2 days off charger with 8 hours of screen time and suddenly the battery doesn't seem to charge past 50% and I didn't do a single thing to it but tonight I am cleaning everything out and starting fresh because something odd is going on

I think the key to many answers is 2 items.....a log and explanation of what occurred in simple terms regarding the 2 updates. There was a no warning automatic att update done just prior to and then the actual 4.1.2 update itself. My gut opinion is something was changed with wifi and how its handled along with some other software changes.
I feel like. Dog chasing my own tail...disable this, disable that...bull...nothing was disabled and wifi was always on prior the updates.

[Q] WiFi Range issue

When i first got my Note 2, everything worked like a charm. But then, over the curse of a a week or so, the WiFi signal significantly decreased in strength. So much that it is basically unusable now, it can only be used when the phone is right next to the router - and what's the point then?
I donno what to do, i am thinking about returning the phone. But seriously, this can't be. WiFi works, it just has very, very bad reception. Any1 got suggestions? Or any ideas why it may have such bad reception? I have not dropped it or anything.
This is a serious problem for me, and i have not yet found a solution for this. I have even been contacted by other forum members, if i have found a solution yet, but i clearly have not - hence starting this thread.
Heeelp! :silly: :fingers-crossed:

One X strange WiFi problem

Hello guys, I'm new on the forum, I am the owner of HoX for the past 5 months and so far I'm really glad with the phone. Everything worked very well until couple of days ago when I started to get strange problem with WiFi. Problem is not common HoX wi fi problem with signal bars. The thing is, when I connect to my router which is located in my room and when I'm in the room signal is full and everything works fine, I get full speed on the phone and everything is perfect. Problem begins when I move from my room to my living room or any other room in the house, then I still get pretty decent signal (full bars or one bar below full) but data transmission just doesn't work, I can't open any page or anything. The same thing happens with all apps using internet like Playstore etc.
Before I got this problem, I could normally use WiFi even when I get out of the home and signal and speed was just perfect. I am now writing you from my notebook via WiFi and I'm located in living room, while two walls and two doors seperate me from the router and I still have almost full bars and full speed. I had the same thing with One X. I could use WiFi anywhere in the house or even around the house.
I tried to connect to other routers as well in the other places and result is the same. I tried connecting at my University, at my friend's home and same thing occurs.
If anyone has or had the same problem please answer me and tell what to do, phone is just 5 months old. I still have year and a half warranty on it, but I'm not really patient and I wouldn't like to give it for a repair cuz knowing my dealer they wouldn't provide me with a replacement phone. :- Phone is unbranded HoX bought in Europe in November 2012.
Thanking you in advance and sorry for my imperfect English, I am from Europe
EDIT...
I forgot to say that I tried to power off/power on phone, I tried "Best Wi-Fi performance", and I also unticked the Auto Disconnect option and no benefits at all.
I just read the first 3 lines...
Send it to HTC-Care, they will install a spongy-pillars inside your phone, this should fix your WIFI.
More info: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1688538
Suggestion: You should post your question/support in the help section (or in Hamdir's OT thread ).
Good Luck.
Thank you very much for quick response and for the suggestion (I'm new on the forum so I hope so you'll forgive me)

I am afraid that's not the answer.
I have faced this problem with my device and HTC in-fact recognized the problem only after i captured a video of the behavior and sent it to them.
The local service center has not heard about it and they escalated the issue to Taiwan. Even a motherboard replacement does not solve the problem.

For me this behavior was irregular and not easily re-producible by the service center guys and hence i resorted to sending them a video comparing my HTC to another one side by side.
They did not have any fix for the solution. I would suggest you do the same as i did. They will choose to give you a temporary loan phone or a replacement phone.
Good luck.
I've had this on both my Desire and HOX and it's usually fixed by switching on mobile data. Doing this seems to remind the phone that it can see the internet and all is well again (it still uses the wifi rather than mobile data).
Thank you all for help. I tried to turn both Mobile data (3G) and WiFi, but same thing happens, and also I began experiencing a lower signal on the same distance from router than I had before.
For example, I had 2 bars before If I was in my living room which is separated by two walls and two doors from my room where is my router located. Now I barely got one bar or sometimes even a dot. So now I'm pretty sure that this is hardware related problem, anyways, there is already a topic about this problem so I will post my enquiries there. Thank you all for help
Did you by any chance got a software update OTA? Check your version number and let us know!

Hey, thank you for reply. I took two screenshots and this is my software info. BTW. I tried factory reset but that didn't help, problem still exists. As far as I can remember I did have some software update a while ago, but can't really remember what exactly. Here are the screens:
Unfortunately, I'm new user and obiviously I'm not able to post pictures here, but I will write what it says.
Android version:
4.1.1.
HTC Sense version:
4+
Software number:
3.18.401.1
HTC SDK API level:
4.63
HTC Extension version:
HTCExtension_Sense45_1
If you need more info like kernel, baseband etc let me know, btw. phone is not rooted, everything is still original (stock rom) and I haven't even tried to root it, or do anything about it, since when you root your phone, you can say goodbye to your warranty.
yea i see...it's 3.18 you have to update your phone to 3.19 and see if issue with wifi still persists...if yes it's hardware fault if not it's fixed by updating...got to settings/about/ then software update or so and download and install new update..
not for all things warranty is away after rooting
Thanks for reply, but how can I update it, cuz manually it won't work. When I go for software updates it says that there is no updates available for my phone?
EDIT...
I found this thread, http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2226098 and some guy says that it will, among other things, repair WiFi reception...
Let's just hope then, that this is some kind of software issue )))
then go to settings and apps and there are those google framework things etc...then clear their cache and reboot
and from google play store too
3.19.401.1 which fixes the WiFi issue is not yet available. I hope we 'll get it soon! I bet that's why you have poor WiFi reception especially since you told us that before you didnt experience any issues at all!
On the road using my HOX
Thank you for replies.
@Ivanovic that's true. I bought HoX in November 2012, and so far I'm really glad with the phone. Haven't had any negative experience, in 5 months it did restarted once or twice on its own, but other than that, everything was pretty fine until recent WiFi problems.
If I had a common HoX WiFi problem, I guess I would have bad signal even 1 centimeter from the router...
Let's hope this update comes ASAP and I hope so it could fix this, if nothing, I still have year and a half warranty on it, but it would be pretty damn hard to explain them this sort of problem and I am afraid that they wouldn't fix it properly.

I had some problem with wifi, the connections were full but the was no data transfer.
I set my router to use B & G channel on, and it works great now.... Just try it, there is no harm in it.

Well, all my wi fi devices work fine on my router except One X. I tested my fathers HTC One V and I tested my notebook computer and they are both working fine. My Wi-Fi reception on One X is significantly reduced since when I go away to other room I got one bar, or even one dot but sometimes I get two bars and no data transfer. I can't remember If I had this problem before 3.18 update, since I don't really use my phone's wi-fi much out of my own room. I first noticed it at my University and at same places like coffee bars.
I don't see why would I have to change router settings, since my router was set up roughly a 6 months ago and everything worked fine including One X. Now One X is the only one which makes troubles.
I sent an email today to HTC with enquiry about this problem and they suggested me to try WiFi from safe mode. I did that and the problem still exists. I tried factory reset and I tried to clear Google framework cache like "One X master" mentioned above. Everything to no avail.
I've never dropped the phone from my hands and it doesn't have a single scratch on it cuz from the day one, I've been keeping it in protective rubber case. Only thing that I'm afraid of is heating during normal use over time. My phone definitely doesn't heat too much, cuz I'm an average user, I mostly use it for facebook, whats app and calls/sms. I don't play a lot of games on it, especially not some really demanding that could heat phone too much, but could just phone's material expand over time during use and heating, so that it causes some parts of WiFi antenna to separate or something like that?
Anyways, I hope so they release 3,19 soon, so I can try with that.
Here is my thread....

But your problem would be solved with new base of rom....
If rooted, try custom rom...

I tested it really hard for a couple of last days . Tried everything and anything that is possible. From factory reset to safe mode, to various apps and options and to no avail.
However, today I noticed that when I connect on my WiFi while I'm near the router I will have full bars and full speed, and as I'm leaving my room and going to other room signal is still decent and I get decent speed, but the if I just make couple of more steps in my living room from the entering doors to living room signal will go to one bar, one dot and eventually disconnect and it will not be able to connect again from that place, so I have to go to my room again where is my router or in the hall and I will connect again and that's how it is going.
I didn't try to root phone nor I will root it until my warranty expires. 550 € is so much for, by all means overpriced devices, I mean in general. You pay them that much for phone and it is still able to screw you up, especially when I'm almost sure that my problem is not related to One X common wi fi problem with squeeze test.
However someone mentioned that next update 3.19 will fix "Wi-Fi reception bug", but I couldn't really find what to they mean by that. Do they admit that there is some kind of issue here with software, or they will just "improve" Wi Fi reception for the devices that are working normally.
Today, I did a factory reset from the bootloader mode, and first 10 minutes after the reset everything was working fine, I was really excited, but then after some time, things didn't go so well, so I got problems again. Connected but no data transfer, or connected but after some time disconnect...
I'm really pissed of. Don't see any logical explanation why would it work after factory reset from bootloader mode, and then fuc* me up again.
I received new 3.20 update today and after some time spent testing WiFi it seems that WiFi is working perfect, just like before. So far so good and I hope so it stays this way. You can lock this thread if you want to. Thanks for help
