[Q] Singal/Radio affected by ROM??? - Droid Incredible Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Not sure if other users have seen this, but I found something interesting last night...
Since assurion screwed me and replaced my stolen amoled with slcd my options were somewhat limited in ROM selection. Skyraider was my goto previously.
I have been using Jaeger since my replacement got here about a month ago, and consistently have been having signal/radio issues. Data would randomly stop working, airplane mode would not work to recover, no signal at my desk, etc.. Battery poppin was a standard.
Last night I installed INCRom, and while the transitions & keyboard are driving me nuts the ROM itself is super fast, feels like a new phone. The reason for the post is, for the first time since I got the phone I have been able to wifi tether for longer then 4 mins without Data being disconnected. I was intermittently receiving e-mails in the train and full signal at my desk. I'm wondering if this somehow related to the ROM? Obviously no scientific testing has been done.

Ya, this problem has been poppin up where 3G would just drop out. If you really like Jaeger, then try this fix. It might help, but I haven't personally tried it out.
[Fix] 3G Drops

Thanks... that's what I get for not keeping up... I'm going to take the weekend, if my kid can keep herself busy with her gifts to write my own...

Is your EVO soft resetting automatically or on its own?

Mine just started to after lunch today. I've had it on the desk and saw it restart about 3 times in less than a 15 minute window.
How do I know this just started and it hasn't been going on in my pocket? Well over the weekend I would have heard it reset (since it's not on silent/vibrate like it is at work). It also significantly drains the battery more if you are constantly soft resetting it/turning it off and on.
So is anyone else having this issue? I need to figure out if it was just a freak occurrence or if something is wrong with it.
I did NOT root it, running everything stock - I did some updates on some apps I have installed but no new programs installed in a couple of days - again this just started happening today in the last couple of hours.
And besides email and messaging, I'm not running anything in the background like Pandora or eBuddy, so I don't think it's a program causing it to reset.
Edit:
Not sure if this is the best category for the thread, but I could not find any threads similar to this besides the battery issue in general. Apologies if this thread already exists somewhere.
No uncalled for restarts here. Open the back, pull the battery, check the contacts? Is it plugged in when it does this? Try padding the battery with a folded piece of paper between the door and battery to ensure a snug fit. If it still does that, time to go to a store.
@Jye75
Thanks, I have pulled out and looked at the battery. I have that Seido case they were slangin' at Best Buy on it, I don't think there's an issue with the contacts.
One weird thing is during one of the automatic restarts, the phone made the start up sound. I had the phone on vibrate and the start up before that (and after when I manually restarted it) did not have a tone. Very odd... perhaps it's possessed.
Odd indeed... drop by a Sprint store, would be my next move.
It happened to me two times today since I did the full root last night. The last time it happened, I clicked on a input field and it restarted...
I had the issue when I turned off "enable always on mobile data"...turning it back on stopped the resets.

Probably just a kernel panic. I would not worry about it too much. It's happened to me on my Hero, and on my Evo.
For comparison purposes, how often does OS X Kernel Panic? How often does Windows BSOD?
Android is rather new technology in comparison. Yes, it runs Linux, which is rather mature at this point, but it's built with a lot of new technology, which may not be as mature as the stock kernel itself.
/two cents.

It reset about 8-10 times in less than 2 hours. More than half of that time the phone was in my pocket and not in use. I hardly got a signal inside of Walmart so it's not like I was using it that much in there.
I have set the data to be always on and hopefully this will help...
I appreciate all the help guys!

I had the same exact thing happen to me beginning this past weekend. It was driving me insane since it was rebooting every 30 minutes or so. I noticed it started happening more so when I did not have good signal. In any case I came to the conclusion it was all the tinkering (root part 1 and custom ROM) I've done with the phone so I wiped it last night and started from scratch (root part 1 and 2 and custom ROM). No reboots yet, but seeing your post concerns me since it's not the first post I've read regarding this issue. I'll keep you posted if mine keeps doing it. I really hope it's not a real issue, getting a replacement does not seem like it will be an easy process at the moment with them constantly selling out.

Thanks for the input. Your concern about the difficulty in getting a replaced unit due to them selling out is EXACTLY why I'm trying to figure out if this is a software glitch.
I'm also glad you pointed out that it tended to happen when the signal was ****ty. Last night I enabled the data always on (it was on by default and I turned it off earlier in the weekend) and I haven't had a reset yet this morning. Of course I've also been in good coverage areas. When it kept resetting like mad last night it was inside of Wal-Mart, and they have some serious shielding on their building or something since I rarely get a full or even half signal in there regardless of carrier or phone in past experience. A lot of friends on Altell/Verizon beg to differ with me though.
I'm thinking if they're connected, the fact that a weak data signal contributes to the device rebooting is really odd; the only time I can think of why a phone should reboot on its own is the OS crashes (or some app takes up ALL the available RAM, freezing it, then crashing it) or it overheats (but would seem to turn off rather than reboot). I had a BB Curve that did this at one point so I had to clear the cache all the time.
Edit:
Actually, I realized when it started to happen it was at work where I have excellent reception. Hmmm... well at least it hasn't reset on its own this morning so far (so far meaning 30 minutes).

Well for what it's worth, mine was also doing it in good signal areas as well. It just seemed a lot more pronounced when I was getting bad signal. Anywho I reread your original post that you are running stock software so let's see if it keeps occuring for both of us regardless of the differences in software we are running. I also still have "Enable data always on" off.

Sounds like a plan. Still no problems so far with data always on.
FWIW I also did the battery trick by switching the phone to CDMA auto from GSM auto. Supposedly you have to do it everytime you boot your phone, and it's supposed to help with battery life. Thread here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=700601
It has to have something to do with turning off always on mobile data. It goes away when it's on, but then comes back when you turn it off. I just did rooted and unlocked nand protection on my phone last night and turned off always on mobile data and haven't had any reboots yet. Then again, it took a little while for it to start resetting last time so we'll see I guess. Could just be some glitch in the software that putting a new rom on has fixed...

I had this happen to me while I was trying to talk on the phone and use google navigation at the same time while running the Overclocking widget to throttle my cpu to 285mhz when the screen was off. Whenever I turned off the screen my phone would reboot.
My guess is that there some issue there where the cpu cant keep up with the heavy usage, locks up and forces a reboot...
I've since gotten rid of the OC widget, rooted my phone and installed a custom rom. I've not had it happen since, of course I havent tried talking and using google nav yet.
I've also noticed that advanced task killer caused the htc sense launcher to reboot (force killed) every once in a while... I've gotten rid of that too...
happend to me while talking on the phone twice, it was weird i could hear him still talking the entire time it was rebooting, up untill the OS actually launched...Im gunna try and kill set cpu, how many other people have this running while its rebooting???

This happened to me today, in-call. My phone has reset 6 times since then off-call.
Alright un-installed setcpu and it still resets. I'm now trying to shim my battery to see if its a loose connection. I gotta figure this out its driving me crazy...
UPDATE: still hapining with battery shined, tried both data sync on and off, installed setcpu, all to no avail... maybe I will try a hard reset... I remember on my kaiser this started hapinin and it was a bad nand flash, but I'm running stock with unrevoked... so if anyone has any ideas I'm wide open.

Wow dude I'm sorry to hear you're having that much trouble. I'm on step 2 of part 2 of Toast's root method but running into major issues. Since I did step 1 (and before that I enabled data always on again) I haven't had a reset issue.
For the record, my Hardware version 2.
Do you guys think this is a widespread or isolated issue? I'm surprised it hasn't happened more or less, in other words I figured there would be either a lot or hardly any comments about it. This medium sized number is interesting.

[Q] How many are problem-free?

Hey everyone... this phone has gotten excellent reviews, and I was psyched to replace my tired Diamond with it until I saw all the problems people have been having with it (LOS, battery drain, gaming, etc.), especially considering it's Samsung. Thinking of getting a photon or 3vo instead, or just waiting it out for something better (yeah, i know it's always around the corner). But of course the people who have issues are more likely to post than those who don't. So how many of you actually haven't had major problems? Is this thing worth the risk? And does anyone know if TEP would cover this if the problems laid low until after the 14 day trial period?
No issues here. I came from the 3vo and photon, do yourself a favor and get the epic.
I have had it since launch day, no problems, in fact this phone is the only one that I have had that I haven't insta rooted... because it's just bad ass, I'm in no rush
I had no problems for 6 days till I rooted, then I had LOS 4 times the first day. Went back to stock kernel and now 2 days in no problems.

I have LOS issue at least once a day, but mine can be fixed by going into airplane mode and coming out of it. Don't believe all the hype, this phone DOES have issues, but it's still a great phone.
Also, I would mention check out sprint's forums and android central to get a good overall view of the connection issues on this phone. It seems Samsung has once again released a phone with buggy modem software. It will get ironed out, its just a matter of when, be it 1 month from now or 6 months from now.
Just as a personal example, I get 300-400kbps less on 3g than my girlfriend gets on her evo 4g in the same exact spot, using speedtest.net app at the same exact time. I have repeated this test multiple times at various spots in my city just to confirm.
I hate to be a naysayer, I love the phone and don't intend on returning it. But keep that in mind, you will be getting a phone that is less than perfect on day one. Once we get an actual update and ruu from Samsung, then the real Roms and Kernels will start rolling out. For now, we are just playing a waiting game it seems.

My experience as well.... may just be coincidence, but no problems while unrooted.
I love it when people post " I was fine until I rooted and then all these problems, what's wrong with the phone." Well duh have you ever thought it was your rooting.
Have had it since day one. No real problems to speak of. Some people are just way too picky. Talk with a non-geek about the phone and there is nothing wrong, talk with a geek and there are all sorts of nit pick. Honestly some of these people are so anal it makes me wonder. The Epic 4G Touch is a great phone with a lot going for it. Had a Photon and that phone had a lot of issues that prevented it from fulfilling it's most basic purpose, to send and receive phone calls. *ugh*
Ive had this phone since day one, haven't had a single issue with it. No LOS, no gaming bugs, no force closes, nothing. Battery life is nothing short of stellar, and overall performace is pretty much without parallel in the mobile world. This is easily the best phone in the us market right now and you'll be extremely happy with it should you decide to get it. I had an EVO 3D for a month and absolutely HATED it. Get the ET4G, you won't be sorry.

I have had the phone for 8 days now, I am impressed with the battery life, I leave it on wifi all day long at work and the phone roams with 1 bar of signal. This building is terrible as far as cell service goes. Even so, I leave work and my battery is ~ 40-50%. I usually unplug it around 4:00am and leave work at 5:30pm. I did get the no smoking circle yesterday but I was in the basement of our library, I'm pretty sure that wsa legit and my signal came back when I walked outside. This phone is running phenominal for me, it is by far the best phone I have ever owned or played with.
I went from: POS Crackberry (Curve 8320), MyTouch 3g, Samsung Moment, Evo Shift, E4GT
have the phone since day one, no problems at all. first smartphone that has no issues for me. and its fast.
Same for me. Unrooted zero issues great battery life super fast.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
No issues here since purchase on launch day. Not one single LOS, good signal strength in the areas I frequent here in San Diego, respectable 3G data speeds by Sprint standards, excellent battery life, no unexpected heat, nothing.
14 days is tomorrow, so I'm expecting the thing to completely friggin explode on Saturday. I've never had a smartphone run this well out of the box. I'm a bit floored to be honest.
Get it. I'm coming from Evo3D (Evo and NS4G before that). It it well worth it. I haven't had an issue with it at all. It is the only phone I have had that I have not felt the need to root....yet.
No issues here save for a WiFi connection that dies every now and then, but I think it's an issue with my router.
Otherwise it's by far the best phone I've ever used. It just works.
Still stock, haven't found an overwhelming reason to root.
I have to agree with everyone, i have had like 20 different phones this year and all have been rooted the day i got them except this one, its just so damn fast, but i expect that will change omce cm7 is out for it
I've yet to encounter a single problem with this phone. First time I haven't been rooted within days of buying one too. It really amazes me that I'm satisfied with a smart phone right out of the box.
This phone has worked perfectly out of the box. So well that there's almost no point in rooting or modding it. Battery, GPS, connectivity, everything...
In fact, I didn't have any issues until I rooted it and installed a modded ROM. After that random LOS after resuming from sleep. Guess what? Returning to stock eliminated that problem. So the issues people are facing are from messing around and modding things not from the hardware or the stock software.
Anyway, now I'm on the stock kernel with root access without issues and I'll probably stay this way for a while until a nice stable rom comes along

[Q] Internet quality issues

I hate to bother the people here but you all are my last chance at fixing this problem or at least hopefully getting advice on how to make Sprint fix it.
About 2 weeks ago there was a major service outage in my area. Internet went down first followed by phone and text service about 3 hours later. The outage started at around midnight and lasted till around noon. Almost every night since then I have been loosing data signal between midnight and 2 am. When it does start to come back on the signal is terrible. The outage lasts between 30 minutes and 3 hours and the slow service afterward usually lasts for another 15 to 20 minutes. Today I had internet drop around 11 am. I have called Sprint 5 times. So far I have been told to reset every possible thing you can reset on my phone and none of that has helped. Now they are saying that I live in a "Signal May Vary" area and that it is not their problem. This issue is happening with all Sprint phones in this area. I work for an ambulance service and happen to be around alot of other people with Sprint. So far we have 3 Epic 4g's and an Epic 4g Touch that are all experiencing this issue. Two of the Epic's are running CM9 Alpha 3 and the other is stock. The Epic Touch is running stock (but rooted) EL29. Normal download speed for us on 3g is 1.0 to 1.75 mbps as determined by the Speedtest.net app.
Any help you guys can provide would be GREATLY appreciated.
have you updated your prl 2x and profile 2x? tell them to reset your profile on their end. when you do this, you need to have the phone totally off. after they reset your profile, you turn your phone back on, and update prl and profile 2x.. make sure your battery is fully charged.
all your services are in a "switch glitch loop". but once you do this.. you should be ok.. you have to be patient though. after updating it will take about 5 mins for full speed to kick in with the tower and your phone.
I haven't done all of those in that exact order but they have all been done over multiple calls. I will try them though if I can get sprint to understand that they need to reset the profile.
And also would this be likely to happen to multiple phone all at once? Or is this just a really freaky coincidence?
just tell them that you need them to reset your "profile from they're end". if they say they can't do it.. tell them you want to talk directly to advanced tech support. "DO NOT, DO NOT" tell them you are rooted.. even if they ask.. do not admit to it.

Galaxy Nexus Worse After 4.0.4

I have a Galaxy Nexus on Sprint. I got it a couple days before the 4.0.4 update, and for those couple days, it worked great. Calls were coming and going, no browser issues, even the GPS sync'd up in seconds (I heard about the issues so I put it through some testing).
Fast forward a couple days and I get 4.0.4. First thing I notice is my web browsing slowing to a crawl, then eventually, just stops. I would click anything or go anywhere, and the progress bar will barely move and just stay put. This did not happen connected to WiFi, only 3G. I reboot my phone, and all is well for another few hours. I don't always use my phone at all times, so I don't know what causes it. I've had to reboot my phone twice yesterday because of this issue.
The next issue was the GPS. I was going somewhere with my wife and figured GPS'ing an address wouldn't be a problem. Well, after about 3 minutes I figured it was like the browsing issue and rebooted the phone hoping it would work again. Nope. We loaded the address up in my wife's Samsung Replenish and were on our way. The whole time my phone was trying to get a GPS lock after a fresh reboot. I even threw my phone on the dashboard so it had a clear view of the sky. The GPS never did sync after the 15 minutes or so it took to get there.
Today, I just discovered ANOTHER issue! I was talking on the phone to my doctor's office, when I heard a few clicks, then it hung up. I thought it was my doctor's office that tried to transfer me and goofed up. I try to call back and after a few rings, I get call cannot be completed as dialed. Still, I thought it was their end. I call again and the recording comes up and plays for about 5 seconds, then cuts out again. So I finally call on a landline and all was well. After I was off the phone, another call came in to my phone and I answered it after the second ring, and it cut out immediately. My wife tried calling later after that, with the same results. After calling again, I was able to hear her after about 5 seconds (I waited longer than that last time).
I'm coming from an EVO 3D (EVO 4G before that) and it had it's quirks, but at least I could hold a conversation and use the web browser reliably. Being basically a vanilla Google Android handset, I had high hopes that all my worries and woes would go away. Now? After being pro-Android since my Samsung Moment, I'm starting to think if I should get a damn iPhone. As much as I dislike Apple and what it stands for, at least their phones "just work".
Anybody have anything I can or should try? Should I just toss this phone on the shelf until Google figures out what they're doing with this handset?
sounds like sprint in your area is having problems.
i doubt it would matter if you had a iphone or not.
My wife isn't having ANY problems with her old PoS Replenish. A lot of friends of mine have Sprint and nobody is having problems that I've heard. As soon as I reboot it when I have browser problems, it works great again, until later.
Flash a custom rom.
Or if you don't want to have a custom rom then flash the factory image.
Maybe something went a bit arse-ways with the ota.
that shouldn't be happening, its not normal, 4.0.4 made the gnex better than it already was!
I did a factory reset and the first call I made was dropped. Guess I'll put a custom rom on it... I shouldn't have to though
might something with the radio if everyone else around is not having problems with sprint. factory reset is not the same as reflashing the 4.0.4 images. try and reflash the stock 4.0.4 images.
I'm on my second device, sprint swapped mine out because my data was just crawling, and I came from T-Mobile and they don't have fast 3G and it felt like I just switched to Dial-Up. They updated the device in-store to 4.0.4 and it was fine yesterday and this morning Pandora kept stopping and buffering. When I got to work I rebooted and ran a speed test and I was getting 1400-1700kbps and sub 400ms ping, which IMHO good considering I don't get great reception in our datacenter. Now 4 hours later I'm down to 100-330kbps and ping of 1000ms plus... even after reboot...
Probably Sprint-version-specific problem or hardware problem of your phone.
I use a GSM Nexus on tmobile and I know people that have the Verizon version. Everyone noticed significant improvement after going to 4.0.4.

T-Mobile Note3 randomly rebooting

So, I got my Note3 last week as soon as I heard CM11 nightlies were officially available. I spent zero time with the stock ROM.
Everything installed perfectly the first time. CM11 ran nearly perfectly, especially considering it's a nightly and there are no stable releases or RCs, yet, etc.
On Thursday I spent a full day at my desk at work. I noticed that my phone rebooted in my pocket. I figured "hey, it's a nightly...I've seen far worse"....then I noticed almost every 2 hours it seemed to reboot again, sometimes more frequently. It never rebooted in the middle of me using it...only while in my pocket.
So, I figured "hey, no big deal. Another nightly or two and this should be ironed out." So I restored my stock backup on Friday after work. All weekend long, no problems whatsoever. I figured it must have been something wonky in the nightly CM11.
Then on Monday, while sitting at my desk, it happened again...and again....and again. Same exact circumstances. I figured maybe I borked something so I got a restore-to-stock and flashed it via Odin.
Well, long story short this continues to be a problem whenever I spend any significant time at my desk at work. It doesn't happen anywhere else so far. It happens with any ROM I throw at it. I've Googled around and it appears that I'm far from the only person experiencing this problem however I don't experience froot-loops like a lot of people. Just semi-random reboots.
Now, I'm pretty convinced that a different (or new) modem would take care of this. I had the GS2 on Sprint and we had a problem we referred to as "LOS" (Loss Of Service) which typically required a reboot...even on my bone-stock phone...it seems to happen with the same randomness. One thing I do know about sitting at my desk, my phone is constantly switching back and forth between H, H+, LTE, DC and occasionally E...Edge being the only thing that gets solid service about 1 wobbly bar.
That's my own theory. This isn't a deal breaker for me. It only happens at work and if I wait a few seconds my phone is back in commission without any intervention.
Anyone else have a similar experience, tips, ideas, theories...? I'm more curious than anything.

I have unlimited data and my 4G speeds outclass my (relatively very good) cable modem speeds at home and at work (I live and work a stones throw from the NOC...I mean...literally, across the street from both places). I would prefer wifi if it wasn't sketchier than my cell connection.
So, it's not that.
How many files on your microSD card? Notice I asked how many, not how much space taken up. Android's media-scanner service seems to have huge stability issues once you cross the 10,000 files threshold. If that's your case, delete some files and see if it still reboots. I had about 10k files, deleted down to 6.5k and no more random reboots for me.
I have the same issue, and I don't have a micro SD card in the slot. The phone will randomly restart, usually after unlocking the phone. I have disabled wifi-scanning, auto app updates, and factory reset device, but nothing helps. It didn't do this before the kit kat update. It only happens maybe once a day or every other day. It's not terrible, just annoying at times. I'm thinking its a software bug.
Also, i'm running everything stock at the moment.
I have been on Cyanogenmod nightlies since I got the phone...and in the past week or two it does not reboot randomly with either Cyanogen or AOKP. At all. Still does with TW, I haven't taken the KK update so I don't know if that will help or hurt....and unless I absolutely am required to I won't be taking that update ever.
Maybe some kind of interference, that's kinda odd that it's happening only at your desk. And on stock.....
