telus canada tablet flex data sim in gs III 3 - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

i have been using a telus canada tablet (ipad or android) flex data only plan and sim successfully.
considering line2 app works in all of north america for $10 per month unlimited talk and text (yes texting works now in canada, just not full MMS) and $15 per month with full business line features and CALL BLOCKING THAT WORKS WITHOUT YOU EVER HEARING A RING AGAIN BECAUSE IT BLOCKS IT ON ITS OWN NETWORK
and considering the telus data only plan is straight up $5 per month, $20 at 500 mb, $40 total at 5.5 GB
therefore be it resolved that it is a full replacement for cel usage (except 911)
and at half the price or even 1/4 the price if you use wifi alot like i do being in the city, taking advantage of all that free wifi you can get for 9 devices for every shaw cable customer (shaw exo wifi, called 'shawOpen' on your wireless in range ssid name)
heres how:
1) my phone-dialer-code-style unlocked (as per these forums) samsung galaxy s3 i747m JB 4.1.1 stock rom, rooted, telus canada will take any sim, i have tested it and the unlock works.
2) get a tablet flex data plan with telus canada, made for android as well as ipad. they will activate it in store, no need to go find a friend with an ipad or device.
i put it in my gs3 and immediately had functionality, but with accidental settings for expensive pay per use data because of telus' apn settings that get automatically set up if a sim is put into a phone and not a tablet. NO PROBLEM JUST ADD THE CORRECT APN (access point name), select it, and ignore the existing ones:
3) the only apn entries required to enter were:
use menu button choice 'add new apn'
edit the first 2 entries only:
NAME: whatever you want
APN: isp.telus.com (NOT sp.telus.com!)
then hit BACK button INSTEAD OF save, your new APN shows a selectable radio button, select it, back out again with back button
rest of settings are auto filled and your up and running, no more steps, tethering included.
to summarize the weird APN behaviour on the GS3:
apn settings are changeable but NOT by editing one of the existing ones (all the existing automatic ones have all settings dimmed), but by adding a new one and NOT using the 'save' menu choice (!).
once back to the apn list which then shows 3 entries instead of 2 i had to only tap the radio button of the new apn and exit out with the back button again. if i then go back in and look at my new apn, it has filled in a few other fields automatically but left the important one for telus canada which is
APN: isp.telus.com
and NOT sp.telus.com which would give you a $600 bill at the end of the month, and i verified that disaster by downloading 1.2 MB with the wrong entry, at about $6!

I got a Telus flex plan today, stuck it in my Nexus 4 (root, Cyanogenmod 10.3, 4.3). I went to APN settings and selected "Telus SP Teather." this had apn set to isp.telus.com, so i thought it would be fine. but then after a little data usage, i had a similar charge of $6. I tried to follow your steps, however, on the Nexus 4 4.3, if i press the back button without saving a the new APN, it isn't stored and I don't get any 'selectable ratio button'
can you confirm that the "Telus SP Teather' that uses isp.telus.com charges as pay per use? have you upgraded OS on your GS3? if so, is your APN menu different? if is it, how so? and how would you put on the correct APN in this menu? what happened when you did use the "save" button when making the custom APN? since you set up the GS3+Flex+VOIP, have you had any problems? are you billed according to the Flex?
thank you for all your help.

Touch Pro 2 Network Freakout.

Ok, heres the skinny. My Fiancee got a US Cellular Touch Pro 2 off Craigslist, I flashed it and made it work on AT&T. It was working wonderfully on AT&T for a few months now, but just a few days ago, it started to freak out. It of course worked fine when I was around, but as soon as she left, it started to not work. This is exactly what she told me is happening:
"As for my phone, it still completely works except for not getting a signal. Or something. It technically says it has several bars, but it also says "Digital Roaming" where it used to say AT&T. Now that I think about it, it did say U.S. Cellular when the problem first started. When I try to send a text it just says "SMS Error" and it can't be sent. Before about an hour ago, when I tried to call someone, it just said it couldn't go through, but now it's saying crazy things like it can't connect to Verizon Wireless and I should contact my phone provider. Then there are the icons. Where usually just the notification icon pops up are now two new symbols. One of them is a tall, skinny triangle and the other is a box with a 1X in it. I can't click on them so I have no idea what they mean. Also, about half the time where the signal symbol is, instead of the regular symbol, it has the bars but also two arrows going in opposite directions."
I hope thats enough information for someone to help me (and her) out here. I rock a HTC Incredible so Windows Mobile is a whole other planet for me.
Have you tried to set it to connect to AT&T only? I've had it swap to T-Mobile (roaming) once, but that's because I forgot to set GSM Network selection to Manual.
(Slide all the way to the Settings Tab -> Wireless controls -> Phone -> Network)
It seems that you will need to set up a new modem connection for the phone to work on the AT&T network. She may have actually been using the US Cellular network all along, up until now and they have most likely caught on to it and she is now being blocked. You will have to set the handset up to use AT&T MediaNET by going into the settings and creating a new modem connection with AT&T's network name, proxy server and DNS settings for it to work right.
I know this because I have just changed one of my handsets over to SimpleMobile from AT&T and I had to set all of this up for my device to work on SimpleMobile's network.
Google around and you should be able to find the information you need to get this problem resolved, ie: network settings for MediaNET, internet and MMS.
Have fun, I know I sure did. lol
HTR
Here's some information I got straight from the HTC support site, hopefully they will get you started in the right direction but it does look as though you/she will have to contact AT&T support to get the internet set up since the MediaNET settings are hard set and non-editable. I was going to get them for you from my device but it will not even let me open the settings up to look at them.
What are the Data Network settings for my device using the AT&T Network?
The GPRS settings can be found by going to Start > Settings > Connections > Connections and then Manage my Existing Connections.
The AT&T MEdia Net settings cannot be edited.
For further assistance, contact AT&T.
What are the MMS Settings for my device using the AT&T Network?
The MMS Settings can be accessed on the device by going to Messages Tab>All Messages>Menu>MMS Options>Servers Tab. Tap on AT&T MMS or select New. Server Name: AT&T MMS
Gateway: wireless.cingular.com
Port Number: 80
Server address: http://mmsc.cingular.com
Connect via MEdia Net
Send Limit: 600K
For further assistance, contact AT&T

Success: carrier unlock, CID, tether on Optimus 7

I have successfully completed the following:
1. Carrier Unlocked a Telus branded LG E900h Optimums 7
2. Connected the phone to Fido
3. Use 3G on Fido
4. Fixed broken Call Display problem
5. Tethered E900h to laptop
6. Set up Wireless Zune sync
It took some effort time to figure it all out, so I thought I would share my experience to reduce frustration that any others may encounter. Most likely, many of these steps will be similar for other WP7 phones.
Unlocking the phone
Because my local phone unlock guy was closed the day I purchased the Optimus 7, I tried instantunlockcodes.com and purchased an unlock code for $10. I received 2 codes the next day, but neither
worked. I recommend not using this website, as tech support responses were next day, and they were never able to get the code working (after 3 days).
I took the phone to my local unlock guy, who unlocked it successfully. He charged me $65.
For anyone who is trying to unlock the phone, when you insert a foreign SIM, the Optimus 7 asks you for a PIN. This is where you enter the service provider unlock code. When I tried either of
the codes that instantunlockcodes.com gave to me, it said, "SIM ERROR". After looking around on the Internet, it seems that this is the message that comes up when it's the wrong code.
Getting Data on Fido
Telephone/voicemail automatically worked on Fido. To get Data to work (ie 3G) I had to change the APN setting.
Go to SETTINGS -> Cellular -> edit apn
"edit apn" is the button at the bottom of that screen. The settings should be:
APN: internet.fido.ca
User name: fido
Password: fido
Have Data connection ON and 3G connection ON.
Internet now worked for me, including browser and Outlook. Outlook connected to Exchange flawlessly.
Incidentally, the first time I set up my phone, I set up Windows Live immediately (startup wizard), and then Outlook Exchange. My appointments from Exchange were all in bright pink.
Because Windows Live was giving me a sync error, I did a factory reset, and set up Outlook first this time. Now, my Exchange appointments are in red. No idea how to change the color, but I
prefer red. In both cases, the Windows Live account's appointments are in Blue.
Call Display and MMS
Call Display and MMS did not work. Frankly, I don't care about MMS (there is another thread on how to fix this), but Call Display is quite important.
Specifically, Call Display worked when land lines called me, but did not call when most cell phones called me. They would read, Unknown.
The solution to this was through Fido: I had to call them and change my Call Display from "Call Display with Name Display" to "Call Display WITHOUT Name Display". Evidently, this problem has
manifested in other unlocked phones, such as some Blackberries as well.
A point of interest: when I put in the original Telus SIM, the call display also did not work properly. They must have given me Call Display with Name Display as well.
Tethering and Wireless Sync
Tethering is a really handy thing for me. I use it infrequently, but it's really invaluable when I need it.
I've modified the solution that's been posted around, to be specific to Fido, but to clarify a couple of the screens, as well:
1. If you haven't already, install Zune first. While tethering is enabled, Wired Sync on Zune won't work. But Zune has wireless synch, which is way cool anyhow.
2. Set up Wireless Sync on Zune. I won't go into all the details, but basically, make sure that the phone is connected to the WiFi network, that your PC has access to the same network (it can
be hardwired, as long as it has access to the same IP subnet). If you have a guest/work router, make sure that both your phone and PC are on the same network. With your phone plugged in, run
the Wireless Sync wizard on Zune. It's painless.
3. Unplug your phone.
4. Press Phone, and dial ##634#, then press the Call button. This makes visible a hidden app called "MFG". Go to the list of all your apps, and you'll see a new icon with a hammer, wrench and
screwdriver lablelled MFG. Open it.
5. You'll be asked for a password. Enter 277634#*# -- you'll need to enter this password every time you want to go into MFG, which is a good thing, because I think you can seriously mess up
your phone if you play around in there.
5. Go to Engineer -> Port Setting
6. Select the QC COMPOSITE and validate. The phone will automatically reboot.
7. VERY IMPORTANT STEP: This is totally counter-intuitive, but you must go to SETTINGS -> Cellular and turn OFF Data Connection.
Note that once you're done tethering, you need to turn it back ON in order to use Internet on the phone.
8. Connect the phone with a USB cable.
9. Windows will automatically detect the phone, and if you're using Windows 7, will prompt you with a popup with the download link for the LG driver. It says LG CDMA driver, but it works. The
full file name is LGUSBModemDriver_Eng_WHQL_Ver_4.9.4_All.exe
10. Once the drivers are installed, click start, and type "Modem", click Phone and Modem.
11. Click Modems, double-click LGE CDMA USB MODEM, click the Advanced tab.
12. Under Extra Initialization Commands, enter:
+CGDCONT=1,"IP","internet.fido.ca"
Replace internet.fido.ca with a different provider APN, if you're not with Fido, obviously.
13. Close the Modems screen, click Start, type "Dial" and click Set up a Dial-up Connection.
14. Enter your home area code because Windows forces you to, and go to the next screen. Then enter as the dialing number:
*99#
Leave the login/password blank. Click connect -- and PRESTO! Tethered Optimus 7.
* IMPORTANT *
Once you're finished tethering, you need to turn Data Connection back on. For some reason, when Data Connection is on, tethering doesn't work. Fortunately, it's a pretty simple toggle to
switch.
I hope that this is helpful!
Thanks for the great info! Just picked up a Telus HTC Surround and was concerned about the CID issue. I'll give this a shot.
You guys paid full pop then for the telus phone?
I'm suprised it costs $65 to get it unlocked...there has to be a way to do this for free...the cheap bugger in me doesn't like to pay for such things!
Yep, paid full at Best Buy. My Samsung Galaxy S just broke last night and I need a smartphone like there's no tomorrow, heh heh. Decided to give a WP7 phone a chance this time.
Yes, I paid $499 CAD + Tax. But, I'm ahead, because I bought an iPhone 4 on renew for $250 or so and sold it BNIB for $960 a few days after release
I have an issue with Text message timing - they are coming through with times that are not the same as my time zone.
UnlockThatPhone.com only 14.99$ and after 18h they send me 2 codes and now I'm so happy
did it work?

[Q] Droid incredible 2 verizon phone unlocked to t-mobile!!!!!!!!!!!

hi so i recentlly got a droid incredible 2 and unlocked it to use on tmobile. now my question is can 3g be enabled to use on tmobile network?
i have it working on edge so far but it love to take advantage of the 3g network . plz help!!
Congratulations, you have posted in the wrong phone forum. Also, I don't believe you would have access to T-Mobile 3g unless the Inc2 supported their AWS 3g bands.
figured id post in the wrong place and thanx il check out if it does support the bands
No problem. According to this site:
http://www.gsmarena.com/htc_droid_incredible_2-3938.php
the Inc2 supports gsm 2100 which I believe is one of the same frequencies of T-Mobiles 3g network. I can't help you any further since dealing with frequencies and other networks isn't something I know of.
Can it be used with att? Like say with the straight talk e71 sim card ?
Sent from my Incredible using XDA App
OP, how do you make it work? Have you verified with Tmobile sim card? I unlocked hinc2, but it shows "no service" with tmobile sim under GSM.

yep it can be used with any sim carrier. just do not know if it will support their 3g data because the adr6350 opperates on frequency 2100 and not also the 1700

I've been trying like crazy to get mine switched over from Verizon to T-mobile and was soo happy to find this!! I'm having a problem finding my apn numbers and that data listed. When ever I try to switch mine to GSM or Global it say there is no SIM card installed and automatically switches back to CDMA. How can I stop this or how can I change the info another way. I have it rooted already and I'm running the ClockworkMod. The phone doesn't have service but I have activated the Tmobile card already, just can't get the bloody thing to work!
Any help you can give you'd be extremely appreciated.

Did you get this as a pre-owned phone from someone else? Is it Sim unlocked - do you know?
If the answer is yes, when you go into APN - you need to create the above and SAVE it first. What ROM are you running?
I've uploaded 2 *.jpg images - not sure if it's showing up correctly? Can you reference & compare the screens and share what yours are?

No this was my phone to begin with. I just got tired of Verizons BS and switched to the Walmart Family mobile that is a third the price, but I couldn't afford a new unlocked phone.
I did manage to unlock the Sim, called Global Support from Verizon and they gave me the code no questions asked.
After I unlocked it and got it to recognize the Sim card I found the APN section and got all that setup like it was shown on here now it's working perfectly!
I'm running the stock ROM. I would like to upgrade to CM7 or something like that but I don't know how to upgrade my Kernal to accept the upgrade so I get stuck at the White HTC boot screen whenever I flash a new ROM. So I just defaulted back to 2.3.4 til I can figure it out.

Great, glad to hear that you got it working on Walmart's T-Mo family plan now, it is "slow" on mobile data but just as good when you are on WiFi. We retired our 2 DI2 last month and ditched Big Red, I hear ya - we saved 50% each month, more than enough to pay for two Nexus 5.
If yours is rooted/bootloader unlocked with CWM, you don't need to do anything with the stock kernel - just leave it alone, find the custom rom's zip file that you want - copy to mSD card, boot into recovery - do a full wipe, flash & reboot, then setup as usual & restore your apps. The stock VZW rom has all the bloatware that are useless, especially on other carriers - use Andy Bone's stocked Rom instead, or SkyRaider's Zeus or TSM Sense, all 3 of them works 99.89999% in GSM (using 2 of them now) - read the FAQ / Sticky first, as it is detailed & explained it all with how to's. I have those roms in offline storage - PM me if you cannot find a working public links to download them.
Prices for brand new 4G LTE smartphones are mad crazy, I understand - VZW wanted about $300 each to upgrade + fees + ETF & 24 months contract, if you shop around when ready on eBay, you can find some pre-owned ones that are solid with custom Rom, and reliable with reasonable prices on the 3G HSPA side, i.e. saw pre-owned Motorola Atrix 4G with 4" screen in good conditions for about $70 - in exchange, you get much faster 3G/HSPA+ speed with mobile data (if you need it on the go)
Have a safe & happy holiday.
Skyraider is probably one of the best sense roms on gingerbread with a few tweaks to it. Thing with unlocking the sim on this phone to work on a different network u will eventually start to have issues since it was designed for only verizon cdma and global gsm only. A lot of the gsm is still in the work. When unlocking any phone to work on a different network ur mostly always gonna have an issue with 3G bec gsm is on a totally different band and unless the phone itself was designed specificially for gsm itll be an issue ull more than likely have. An apn change might fix it but not a lot of roms have the apn settings unless its more the line Cyanogenmod. There is an apn settings shortcut in the playstore u can use to set it. Me personally i wouldve stuck with Verizon because the majority of the worlds population is cdma service towers and tmobile has less coverage then sprint or at&t but too each his own. Good luck and hope the apn change helps gain u 3G

How To VVM on AT&T (confirmed Samsung Focus S and Focus Flash)

Many of you are aware of a thread in the Focus S section of this forum about someone with their Focus S getting VVM to work. However, it wasn't the most helpful thread to replicating it. I have since replicated this on a different device (the Focus Flash), so I wanted to post something here to let more people know.
Thanks to davezaff for the idea.
Here is how I did it on my Focus Flash. You will probably need a way to edit the APNs.
1. Update to 7740
2. Update to 8107
3. Insert sim card into an AT&T Android LTE phone (I used skyrocket)
4. Go to att.com and switch plan to Data Pro 4g LTE plan. I had to call to switch since it wasn't working on the website.
5. Setup VVM on Android LTE phone (don't know if this is necessary, but this is what I did....make sure friend knows the VM password so they can re-add it when they put their sim card back in.
6.Insert sim card back into Windows Phone
7. Call Voicemail
8. Wait for VVM to show up on phone (mine showed up after calling voicemail).
9. If sync error, edit the APN as follows
APN settings (delete the internet_line APN)
Create a new APN
APN Name: pta
Profile Category: internet (always on)
APN: pta
Auth type: None
Username:
Password:
Proxy address: proxy.mobile.att.net
Proxy domain:
Proxy port: 80
I now have working VVM on AT&T with my Samsung Focus Flash. My internet tethering still works (applied the Interop unlock + tethering hack from XDA). I have not tested MMS since I did this, but the MMS APN was untouched.
So they have tied vvm with their stupid data plans, how nice. So I can pay $20 for 300mb + vvm or I can pay $10 for unlimited data and traditional vm... ATT is so dumb.
Moved To WP7 General
This is not development, its more of a guide. Please post such threads in the WP7 General section
For the normal person, it is pay $30 for 3GB of data with traditional VM or pay $30 for 3GB with VVM. The only difference is one plan has the word LTE at the end.
how can one even get the 8107 update on the samsung focus s? i tried the old force update method (disconnecting the internet connection) with zune, and that hasn't worked...

Yes, and just download the English only language pack.
i already updated to 8107, but im asking if the vvm works for the titan, i also don't know anyone with an LTE android phone
Does this work if you don't setup VVM on the android device first? I was thinking of just calling AT&T and asking to be switched to the 4G plan.
Get it working without an LTE device
OK, I got this to work on my Lumia 800. Furthermore, I didn't have an LTE device.
What I did have however, is an AT&T store that caters extensively to my place of work (a software company). They are really nice, understand unusual requests, and try everything to help.
I did the following:
1. Upgrade the OS as per the original post.
2. Call the nice AT&T store that I mentioned above. Asked them to put me on an LTE plan. (I was already on an enterprise plan, so I was moved to the same enterprise plan but the LTE version. Cost of my plan remained unchanged).
I explained that I was doing some app development, and planned to be swapping phones from time to time, some of which are LTE phones. (I also have a microsim adapter, so moving between phones that take microsim and regular sim is not an issue for me).
They asked if I'd like VVM provisioning. I said yes.
They told me that they would change my listed phone to a blank IMEI (basically change the IMEI listed on my account to a blank IMEI that's associated with an LTE phone for provisioning purposes). I don't know if this is something all stores would be willing to do.
3. In the APN settings, I changed my APN to pta. I did NONE of the other settings mentioned (proxy, proxy port, and everything else are BLANK).
Now I have Visual Voicemail on my Lumia 800!
Hmm so why is vvm only available to LTE phones/network I want to get this.

I wonder if this blank IMEI is a special IMEI that at&t has to test LTE devices on accounts or something. I wonder if this IMEI would also work on other accounts as well. Hmmm.
I don't suppose that IMEI is something you could share possibly? I mean if its not a real phone, and can work on multiple accounts, it would be very nice to (selectively) share it so that some of us can get VVM.

I agree, since I just called asking for essentially this setup and they deniened any special IMEI.

So i also have an 800 and asked them to provision me for HSPA+ recently, so they switched my data plan to one that was supposed to be able to access it (i have no idea if it really can - that's a whole different can of worms). What did they switch your plan to? If you look online and hit "recent usage", you can see under "Additional Data Purchased Usage" your data lines with the plan code. My code is "HSSMTD4O" Just wanted to see if i could skip the "call att" step.
Thought I would share my experience also..
I was able to get VVM working on my Focus Flash. Luckily I have a friend that works at the ATT store. He just took a Samsung Note scanned the IMEI and added that as my phone. Then he enabled LTE and VVM. I rebooted phone and went in the the phone tile, and VVM prompted me for password. I put in password and all has been good.
The easiest way would probably be to borrow a friends VVM supported phone and put your sim in it, then have them add VVM to your account.
I did not have to add any APN's or make any changes to the phone.
Getting it working without a LTE device and without AT&T in your pocket
So, I decided to try and get VVM setup on my Focus S today, but I have no friends with AT&T and the local store was unwilling to help in the fashion outlined above.
So what to do? Well the main thing you need for this is the IMEI number from an Android LTE phone. So I asked a couple friends that don't live close by, and none of them had a LTE phone.
So I searched the internet for those "Get unlock Codes" websites, specifically for tutorials on LTE phones, and some of them show the IMEI number.
So I went into chat support and told them I needed a LTE plan with visual voicemail, and they asked for the IMEI number, I gave it to them, and then 2 minutes later VVM is now provisioned and working properly.
Yeah so I ended up adding the IMEI of a random Galaxy Note that I do not own. It was dead simple to do it online through tech support chat. After that, just called up voicemail, waiting a second or two, hung up, and then my phone prompted me for my voicemail password and automatically enabled visual voicemail. I realize that AT&T's system does not check for duplicate IMEIs across the network, so you can throw the same IMEI onto any number of phones and AT&T wouldn't know a thing (until they start looking of course).
I did have to change my APN to "pta" to get it to sync properly, but after that it was all smooth sailing.
Now I've got Visual Voicemail on my Titan and Lumia.
I am glad some of you were able to get it to work. The big issue I had before starting this thread was getting the APN settings. After getting VVM enabled, it couldnt connect until I messed with the APN. Glad I was able to help y'all!

[Q] New phone -- no data. Suggestions?

OK, I took the plunge and got one. Checked a few things out, then went for the ICS update (official AT&T, at least for now) before I got too wrapped up in it. Seems I may have forgotten to check out that the data plan worked before the update -- I think I may have had Wi-Fi on all the time. Yeah, it was a dumb mistake.
Now I cannot get any data with any application when outside a Wi-Fi zone. Not even 2G, much less 3G. No connection and no indicator at the top. Phone is working on 3G just fine.
I have AT&T, though it's an old "Smartphone Unlimited" plan. It works just fine on my LG Expo (which is 3G). The phone is supposed to be unlocked (at least until I updated it, don't know if that affected it), but I have no non-AT&T SIM with which to try it. Have made no attempt to root it or load a custom ROM.
Are there some settings somewhere that I have to change to go through my old "wap.cingular" gateway (either rooted or not)? Should I try going to a custom ROM? Back to the original software (link, please, if that's the case)?
I'm going to see if a co-worker's T-Mobile SIM works with it (voice and/or data). But is there anything else I should try? Has AT&T finally caught up with me and my old, cheap, unlimited data plan and my SIM keeps me from connecting?
There should be no issue putting in a SIM from a working phone. If you go to System Settings->About Phone->Status, what is the network status? "Unavailable"? "Unprovisioned"?
Do you have signal, just no data, or do you have no signal?
I have full phone and text service, just no data (though, oddly, it says I have used 9.92KB of data). That occurs both at my home where I connect to my microcell and elsewhere. Of course, at home, I can also use WiFi for data.
"Mobile Network State" is "Disconnected". "Mobile Network Type" is "UTMS:3." If I turn the data network off and back on, it goes to "connecting" for a while, then back to "disconnected. I did find the location where it specifies the Access Point Names and it is set to "wap.cingular" just like my old phone. But unlike my old phone, the user name and password are "not set". These are uneditable fields.
I also went to the place it allows me to select my network operator and it offered me three different "AT&T" options. Two of the three gave me a message that my SIM does not allow connection to that network. When I try to switch to one of them, I see the data indicator go through Edge, 3G, and 4G, then off.
Only other odd thing I've noted is that the serial number is all zeros. The IMEI is correct, though; and I think that's what matters.
I'm becoming more and more convinced this is a problem with my SIM and the data plan it's tied to. It is from an old EDGE-only Windows Mobile 5 "smart phone" when that meant a device without a touch screen or QWERTY keyboard and a "PDA" was something that had either of those. The "Smart Phone" data plan was half that for a "PDA" but more than for a plain phone, and that's what I'm still paying. I've been buying phones outside of the AT&T system to hang on to that inexpensive, unlimited plan; but I may have reached the end of the line with it. I definitely need to try a SIM from another 4G capable phone,. both AT&T and T-Mobile, to see where I stand.

In the Access Point Names make sure that the profile you were talking about is selected. Or from that screen if you hit the menu button it should give you the option of entering your own APN. If you've had data working on another phone I would suggest duplicating the APN settings from it and try making a new profile.
It could be the SIM/plan you're currently on but honestly this sounds exactly like what happens when your APN settings aren't configured correctly.
Turn the phone off, remove the SIM, boot it with no SIM. Go into Access Point Names and remove all the entries. Turn it off, put the SIM back in, turn it back on. If it doesn't autocreate an entry in Access Point Names, or the autocreated entry still doesn't work, take it to an AT&T store and ask them for help.

There was no way to select the plan. So I made a duplicate of it, which did have a select button, selected it, and it now works great. Thanks so much for your help.

That would have ben last resort. They would have wanted to "upgrade" my data plan to something that cost more and isn't unlimited.
Your solution might have also worked, but the first one offered led me to a solution, so I never tried yours. I'll keep it in mind, though.
