[Q] HELP! - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

I know there are a couple ways to root.. and)Ive seen a few probs with certian ones... looking for best way...
Not a noob... just looking for the most soild way... ive rooted with CFauto before.. but dont know whats the best to retain shells... had a couple probs there.
1. Should I flash older firmware n then motochopper then odin twrp. Then do I need a kernel with restriction removed?
And use root keeper?
2. Or Use cf- auto. Then odin twrp. No new kernel needed here?....
I just need the most solid way to retain shells...
Someone please help...
One last (Q)... whats the most solid recovery right now.....twrp or cwm?
And is it better to odin it or use goomanager or rom manager...

I dont know about you but I love things that make my life easy.
I rooted using cf-auto....in less than 2 minutes, including downloading the files.
Than I downloaded goomanager and installed twrp in less than down minutes....
So all in total took me approximately 5 minute (at most) to root with my desire recovery.
Twrp and cwm are both stable..matter of preferences and i just like twrp better.

Well take a look...I rooted my whole house (including myself) and root was kept on both ucing cf-root.
And I never knew recoveries froze before lol first time hearing this. You may just have been unlucky (all i can think of) but I know a lot who used the same things that I have regarding their s4, and all is still good for them and I

Well I think it's mainly to fix the bugs so when we do get JB we have no issues.
That's my guess.
But you were right again, when is the next one coming. Lol

Samsung could easily be using xda for free bug/revision testing in this matter... (think about it... some of the best testers are here blasting on this... look how fast they report back that x, y or z is broken... (sms on wifi... or camera, or whatever...)

Why not just flash the update in stock recovery? You can use ota rootkeeper to protect root.
Also the pro version of mobile odin will flash any of the full fw releases as well as the otas, and it'll reinject root during the process. (Its now my preferred method)
Most people arent going to want to give you their nandroid. theres too much personal info on it. Even those like me who make one right after flashing will be very cautious about this. Theres almost always something in there that is easily forgotten to clear. You could get lucky and find someone willing to do it, just dont get your hopes up too much.

Hey doc got some questions for ya. I came to the gs3 from nexus s 4g. With the ns4g I could always just flash new ROMs and updates in cwm. It seems the process is a bit more complicated on gs3. I purchased mobile Odin, and I've used the PC version a couple of times, but I'm not that comfortable with it. First day I got my gs3 I flashed Mr. Robinson's root injected uvlah2 and just stuck with that. A couple nights ago I finally flashed a new radio and it has helped my signal. I want to make sure my phone is ready for the jb update so what would you suggest?

Back in the day on my Samsung Moment someone had developed some kind of method to do this. It's been so long ago i dont remember the specifics of how it worked but basically it was a flashable .zip that you could flash from stock recovery to gain root access. Keep in mind this was several years ago when devices were much easier to exploit and i also believe at that point in the development life the official .zip signatures had been leaked. In short, i wouldn't go so far as to say it impossible but i wouldn't get my hopes up either.

Which instructions have you looked at? And have you tried seeing if following the Windows instructions worked? It should work about the same when running programs such as Odin or Heimdall. The hardest part will probably be finding the proper phone drivers and software that work with Linux.
Edit: If possible, try using a virtual machine in linux. Apparently some people in other forums were able to use WINE in Linux when using Windows software. (I currently use Windows so that's as much information I can give you).

I'm still sporting the koodo stock rom(too busy) rooted and a bit debloated and getting awesome battery life compared to the g2x. I'm in Canada and my carrier is wind mobile (3g/wcdma only service) on the g2x with a 1980 mah battery barely made it over 14 hours. However, this setup gives me around 24 hours uptime with approximately 3.5 hours screen on time. So once you spanking it to your like, should be good.

yeah i guess im just going to have to root, debloat and flash a diff kernel and see if the battery life improves. my main concern is tethering though. i remember once i flashed CM7 on my g2x, i had free tethering capabilities. ......dude the whole point of having a linux OS is so that you can customize it, and control its every aspect. You should not be getting a distro just because it has something preinstalled.

Maybe thats the reason you have a linux box. I have one cuz i like the freedom and power it provides. Which in turn allows for easy and awesome customization. You can customize a Window OS a great deal too. Again for me its the freedom and power. I have been using arch awhile now. A little before the glibc symlink issue. Which broke your system if you updated. So im not new to Linux nor am I wet behind the ears.
i figured i would share with someone who isnt an elitist bsd user like yourself. Who just wants a distro with everything already installed. Some people dont have the time or are just new and havent learned that much yet but want to root their phones. idk either way i thought it was cool.
the bsd in my name is actually just a coincidence, but there is a good chance of arch having heimdall. open terminal and do "pacman -Ss heimdall" you will get a result. you would then do "sudo pacman -S result" it would download and install it. There may also be a heimdall-frontend get it as well, so you can do everything with a gui. Once you have them installed run it as root, or else it won't work. Arch is an awesome distro. Never switch distros and learn.

are you really trying to school me on using pacman? lol Ive been using Arch for over a year and a half i would hope i know how to use its package managaer! i told you ive been using it since before the glibc symlink issue so i dont know what your trying to accomplish here?! i can program in a few languages too.
i asked this question cuz im new the samsung galaxy. im comkng from the g2x. Which was an awesome phone!! ive had it for 2 years and the tools to flash cwm were linux scripts. Flashing roms was as easy as downloading it then rebooting into recovery from the terminal, wiping, then flashing. So now im back at square one cuz my g2x screen broke for the 3rd time. so i figured i try something new.
on top of it my laptop hard drive crashed and i havent had the time to transfer my data from the burned out hdd to the new one. so i just run live cds. i roof for a living too. 5 days a week and have a fiance and a kid. so my freetimebisnt spent on a computer. idk where this thread is going but i got what i need to know... heimdall. yeah thanks

well heimdall doesnt seem to work no matter what i seem to do. Use the Galaxy S2 Tool (based on Odin) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650908
T989 is the Hercules. So you should be good.
As for recovery, go with the new Twrp it is just bulletproof. CWM has some issues with some of the newer roms along with some wiping issue.
So first flash a recovery (CWM or touch) via the above tool (some older versions are included), then once you reboot to CWM /CWM touch simply flash the below TWRP recovery. It will replace the existing recovery after reboot. Make your stock nandroid with
TWRP, CWM backups are not compatible with TWRP and vice versa.

[Q] 4.1.2 update

Just got the 4.1.2 jelly bean update the other day for my spring samsung galaxy s2 epic 4g touch. So far I love the new OS but seem to be having a few issues.
1. battery life is substantially worse than ICS.
My battery was at 95% and I used my gps this morning for about 30minutes and it caused my battery to go down to 50%. before the update it would only use about 10%-15%.
any way to fix my battery life?
2. I also keep getting this error "the process google.process.gapps has stopped" Not sure what it means/how do I fix it.

The neat thing about nodata is that it keeps your data. You can also root and then use Titanium Backup and save all your apps and system data then restore it when you flash a new ROM. Root definitely has its perks.

Afraid to root! would love some reassurance

OK so a bit of history...
I just sent back a galaxy note 2 n7100 to amazon (removed all trace of root)
Sent it back as I installed root and custom rom - managed to lose imei etc (didn't backup)
Even after the noble efforts of some kind forum members I could not save the phone
They have sent me a new note n7100.
I want to root it and back it up only. I can live with stock samsung rom
I don't even need cwm installed as the root is for a few certain apps and a cheeky overclock.
Is it safe enough to just root? Will I be able to unroot and update my stock rom?
Thanks
Dan

I just picked up the Note 2 yesterday and looking to do the same . I came from the vibrant which had no flash counter or normal rom check . From what I've read cf root is most likely what I'm going to use but I'm not very familiar with this flash counter stuff . I'm on the jump plan and plan on upgrading in 6 months and I don't want my upgrade to be rejected due to flash counter and so on . An help is much appreciated .

I kinda think you have to root for firewalls, avast anti theft, no ads, also directory bind and increased sound Volume.
The root is pretty simple and there are enough guides to get your counter reset and indeed lose the modified tag. It worked for me.
Dr ketan has a few real good guides. Don't be scared. I've rooted four of these and now I've a custom rom too.

Rooting is a piece of cake. It's finding a custom Rom that suites you which is the real problem. It's like a jungle out there for us noobs.
Sent from my GT-N7105 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If the gains you perceive from rooting (custom ROMs, Tasker/Titanium, nandroids, etc) outweigh your risk-aversion to possibly losing your warranty or damaging your phone, then don't do it.
Having said that, if you follow all the instructions carefully and understand the process, you should have no issues. I've rooted the last half dozen phones/tablets and it's been smooth sailing.
After losing my IMEI it took me almost 3 weeks to find a solution to my uprooted device, now that I regained the IMEI back I rooted it for the first time, installed the triangle away and returned the status to normal the counter was already 0. I've also noticed that the OTA update is functioning properly.
Found the correct thread and files and I've successfully rooted and have the unlimited multi window mod .

Lol. @ agentfour20 Yeah I did see your phone show up as that on your posts but wasn't sure. Glad you got it sorted now.
Edit - ismo29 I know what you mean but I think this phone doesn't need a custom rom as much as most

Framaroot is OK for a last call. But the issue is that it still can open doors that normal rooting doesnt.
I use the prerooted stock with odin

Samsung have also patched the vulnerability in newer firmwares.

Thanks
Dan
