Which instructions have you looked at? And have you tried seeing if following the Windows instructions worked? It should work about the same when running programs such as Odin or Heimdall. The hardest part will probably be finding the proper phone drivers and software that work with Linux.
Edit: If possible, try using a virtual machine in linux. Apparently some people in other forums were able to use WINE in Linux when using Windows software. (I currently use Windows so that's as much information I can give you).

Good to see a fellow ex-g2x comrade.
Just like FineTalent suggested, try Odin via Wine.
At the bottom of the page there are some details about a similar scenario :

I'm still sporting the koodo stock rom(too busy) rooted and a bit debloated and getting awesome battery life compared to the g2x. I'm in Canada and my carrier is wind mobile (3g/wcdma only service) on the g2x with a 1980 mah battery barely made it over 14 hours. However, this setup gives me around 24 hours uptime with approximately 3.5 hours screen on time. So once you spanking it to your like, should be good.

yeah i guess im just going to have to root, debloat and flash a diff kernel and see if the battery life improves. my main concern is tethering though. i remember once i flashed CM7 on my g2x, i had free tethering capabilities. So im hoping that will come with CM9. Not sure how stable CM10(Jellybean) is for the S2.

Use heimdall on linux. I've flashed my S3 on it, no problem. It works a little differently than Odin though, so look up instructions.

i actually found a linux distro that comes with heimdall preinstalled as well as the android sdk. It's called Santoku. Find it here -> https://santoku-linux.com/ here is directions for using heimdall on santoku -> https://santoku-linux.com/howto/development-tools/howto-run-heimdall-samsung-devices-santoku-linux

......dude the whole point of having a linux OS is so that you can customize it, and control its every aspect. You should not be getting a distro just because it has something preinstalled.

Maybe thats the reason you have a linux box. I have one cuz i like the freedom and power it provides. Which in turn allows for easy and awesome customization. You can customize a Window OS a great deal too. Again for me its the freedom and power. I have been using arch awhile now. A little before the glibc symlink issue. Which broke your system if you updated. So im not new to Linux nor am I wet behind the ears.
i figured i would share with someone who isnt an elitist bsd user like yourself. Who just wants a distro with everything already installed. Some people dont have the time or are just new and havent learned that much yet but want to root their phones. idk either way i thought it was cool.

the bsd in my name is actually just a coincidence, but there is a good chance of arch having heimdall. open terminal and do "pacman -Ss heimdall" you will get a result. you would then do "sudo pacman -S result" it would download and install it. There may also be a heimdall-frontend get it as well, so you can do everything with a gui. Once you have them installed run it as root, or else it won't work. Arch is an awesome distro. Never switch distros and learn.

are you really trying to school me on using pacman? lol Ive been using Arch for over a year and a half i would hope i know how to use its package managaer! i told you ive been using it since before the glibc symlink issue so i dont know what your trying to accomplish here?! i can program in a few languages too.
i asked this question cuz im new the samsung galaxy. im comkng from the g2x. Which was an awesome phone!! ive had it for 2 years and the tools to flash cwm were linux scripts. Flashing roms was as easy as downloading it then rebooting into recovery from the terminal, wiping, then flashing. So now im back at square one cuz my g2x screen broke for the 3rd time. so i figured i try something new.
on top of it my laptop hard drive crashed and i havent had the time to transfer my data from the burned out hdd to the new one. so i just run live cds. i roof for a living too. 5 days a week and have a fiance and a kid. so my freetimebisnt spent on a computer. idk where this thread is going but i got what i need to know... heimdall. yeah thanks

well heimdall doesnt seem to work no matter what i seem to do. So rather than spend forever and a day trying to fix what might be fixable ag this point, i got ahold of a windows computer. so a few questions for someone who would know. one, i have found directions and the apps for the tmo s2 but it says it is for the hercules s2 and it will brick any phone that isnt a hercules version of the s2. how can i tell if i have the herc version? I just want to root for now. so can someone point me in the right direction.

Use the Galaxy S2 Tool (based on Odin) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650908
T989 is the Hercules. So you should be good.
As for recovery, go with the new Twrp it is just bulletproof. CWM has some issues with some of the newer roms along with some wiping issue.
So first flash a recovery (CWM or touch) via the above tool (some older versions are included), then once you reboot to CWM /CWM touch simply flash the below TWRP recovery. It will replace the existing recovery after reboot. Make your stock nandroid with
TWRP, CWM backups are not compatible with TWRP and vice versa.

Did I Brick? Stuck at Android Recovery Screen

Rooted...no issue there.
Installed ROM Manger.
Installed Clockwork Recovery from Rom Manager as I wanted to install a new rom.
Now when I boot, no matter what combination I hold down, it goes to the Android System Recovery screen and in the background is the white triangle, yellow exclamation point and little android guy.
I can move between the three ofered choices but pressing the power button (I assume this is the OK button) does nothing.
Thoughts / help?
Does your computer recognize it? If it does you should try adb download and see if you can get into download mode

Just realized I posted the question in the wrong forum as well.
Computer makes a noise as though it knows it's connected, yet it doesn't show up and odin and kies don't find it either.
I think home button is select and power button is back, but I haven't used stock in a long time, so might be remembering incorrectly.
I suggest you don't use Rom Manager to install recovery. It doesn't work properly for this phone and could lead to non-recoverable problems.
Read this thread and you'll have references to everything you need to undo and start from scratch:

I came over from an Evo and believe me everything pointed to not use Rom Manager when I had my phone as well. I agree that if people took the time to read properly they would see that Rom Manager and a few other crazy things they do are not suggested. But they make sure to have time to post and read their threads when they screw up. Honestly with all the brick laying and blue light specials up in herrre. Do you really need to post your problem and how do you fix it...
His problem is one of 100 exactly the same in here and instead of searching and helping himself he did the same lazy thing that got him stuck in the first place. Then too lazy to find out how to work CWM. Quite sure he will be back again if he keeps up this route... @OP not trying to be an ass but just hate to see people who don't want to help themselves.
Sorry to hear that you've bricked OP. Hope you can get a replacement and get back into owning your phone.
Here's what I've done to avoid bricking since I am also somewhat new to the E4GT...
Read the forums on XDA.
Observed what others are doing that worked.
Didn't flash anything you are unsure of.
Became familiar with ODIN.
Stayed away from ROM manager.
Flashed using el29 rogue recovery only. (I've been successful with this so far, others say to use el26.)
Wipd cache/dalvik-cache/data/system.
Purchased mobile ODIN, $5 is better than the deductible to get a replacement.

I bricked but it was a bad recovery well not bad just messy team trolls recovery bricked me 2 weeks ago wiping Cache . But as always when u post questions like this here ur gonna hear it lol but searching helps.
Now if its hard bricked ud not even get to recovery at all just a blue light and a black screen that if is ur case unplug it cause it runs the battery super hot .
If not in that position than try power and volume down if it does not bring u to download mode to Odin another recovery if that don't work idk

Porting was needed for CWM recovery. Not ROM Manager. Support for ROM Manager comes from device devs, not koush. In the form of uploading vetted software, that doesn't corrupt. It is a universal starting point, not a fully functional product.
But regardless, I wasn't even talking about it's support. I was saying people other than ones with HTC devices can get into the habit of using ROM Manager.

Doesn't matter the recovery is in the kernel and rom manager will not work on this phone ....there is no separate recovery partition and ROM manager won't flash the recovery right on here since it's part of the kernel partition.koush doesn't really care he made it to temporarily flash a recovery like touch that might work if not for ics kernels... The thing is it doesn't work people should not rely on it like a crutch

[Q] Somebody fluent in Linux, Want to help me out?

Just need some questions answered/ suggestions.
I have ubuntu 10.04 on my HP Pavillion DV6z, and it works.. but is very crippled. It took me to hell and back to get my screen to work.. even though it won't detect my monitor but displays and I get random graphical glitches. My internet won't work through a cable anymore... and is supper slow and unreliable. I had to frakenstien my wifi drivers to make wifi even partially work. I have the windows wireless drivers for linux installed, as well as some other official drivers for my RTL8189ce wifi card that I installed via terminal. My wifi drops and reconnects quite often even though my router is RIGHT next to me. My battery lasts at the most 3 and a half hours... its a high capacity 6-cell li-ion battery. It lasts 7 hours or so on Windows and windows is a battery hog... and uses 30% of my 6gb's of RAM... Ubuntu uses 7%.
Okay now to the suggestions/questions... will newer builds help? I tried 11.10 and it wouldn't get my screen to turn on but found out about using "nomodeset" at the bootscreen and it should work... then permanetly adding that to the boot kernel. Not certain but may work. Is there a flavor of linux that is very similar to windows... or to better put universally compatible with more windows pc's? I was going to try deving and learning code but don't even think its worth it with such a crippled laptop ='[. PLEASE help me... I'm tired of being stuck with windows... love me some linux.
Not to offend/discourage anyone from helping but googling and pasting me some links isn't going to cut it trust me I've spent days on trying to fix this... and it is what it is now because of that.
So I need some real pros or someone who's been through this type of ordeal... even tho I hear most don't even get such issues.
Specs:
AMD A8 3550-mx with Radeon HD 6220g [discrete class graphics]
6gbs of RAM
Windows 7 64 and ubuntu 10.04 64bit
560gb HDD 5400rpm.
It gets the job done...

Try LMDE (Linux Mint Debian Edition). It fixed aprosamurai's issues. After you install it and boot up, open terminal and run this
Sudo apt-get update
Sudo apt-get upgrade
And then reboot
Ubuntu is super picky about drivers and mint debian edition 'just works'. In my opinion, Ubuntu is on a downfall as an OS for developers and has become an OS geared toward kids who want a super simple UI for just using the internet. It doesn't even natively support a full root user and the UI is incredibly hard to multitask on.
Aprosamurai had a similar graphics card (ATI built in). I have an ATI dedicated.
You shouldn't have to run any other mods after installing LMDE and doing what I said.
Ubuntu is touchwiz, LMDE is AOSP
I wouldn't call myself fluent in Linux but I am familiar and do use it on occassion (my laptop is triple booted). Have you tried the Ubuntu forums? I have had some luck with them but in general I don't think their forums users are very helpful and often ass holes. I would also try linuxquestions.org if you insist on using Ubuntu. I find them much friendlier. I also echo the above. I haven't used mint yet but only read good things about it. As soon as I am done with these last few weeks of school I am going to be replacement Ubuntu with mint.
Awesome =]. So I can just burn an iso and install it over my current partition right? I can't put it on another parititon I have to many apparently... windows, recovery, and ubuntu. Even had to delete my "hptools" partition which was used for "bios upgrading" but just recently got an update from HP and my bios updated just as it should.... hp fail.
Sent from my SPH-D700 using xda premium
I would reformat the partition but when you boot up into the live cd I am sure it will give you the option to do so. Running the live cd first to make sure everything is working properly is always a good idea. If it isn't then you would want to hit up their forums and see if what is not working in your case is just a missing driver from the live cd and it would start working when you install it and update the OS or if there is something else going on.

Yes ktoonsez fernel are flashable seperately and this kernel is awesome. I've been using it for a while now and no problem at all. allow steps from 96mhz to 2106 mhz adding a lot of battery life!

Saweeeet! Thanks man. Just out of curiosity, (and I know most ppl don't bother with them) how high are you guys best benchmarks? There's a beastmode kernal for my OneX for 2.1ghz that was soaring mine to right under 6200.. I'd image the galaxy shoots slightly higher?

Something around 7900 i think. But Im not a big fan of benchmark

Synergy r484

Kinda new to the xda still trying to figure out rules. Kudos to the synergy guys tried a couple different roms and I'm addicted to this rom and is features. Just flanged the r484 and am support happy the mms issue wad fixed. Multi Window flawless. No problems with cameras. The only thing I have had issues with is reception 4g/3g. It seemed more stable with r433. Using ziggy and used custom install with pre selected synergy recs. If this post is on the wrong spot mod please fix. If someone has an answer for me greatly appreciated

Have you tried changing your modem ? Or going to a different ROM and updating prl and profile ?
http://i1202.photobucket.com/albums/bb374/TexasEpic/ThePeoplesROM-KennyGlass123/daniel4653.png
Changing modem? Haven't heard that one yet. If you could elaborate on that one that would help. As for prl and profile I'll try that but I didn't have the issue with the previous build. Should I just try flashing stock and update? Then reflash. My area hasn't changed. Stock and previous r434 build I had very constant and strong 4g everywhere. With the r484 it can't make up its mind between 3g/4g. Thanks Daniel for the info

You change your modem through Odin. Been a while since I've done it (on HTC for a while there when my Epic broke it's charge port) but as I recall you put the phone in download mode, put them modem in the 'Phone' field after downloading it to your computer, and fire away. Do check the instructions first, I'm going off of memory from six months ago.... Some radios work better with some phones than others. Depends on your device.

That's probably (read:is) easier than Odin.
Thanks for the input guys. Very appreciated. I'll try that the next time I'm at the home computer and let you know.

I s-offed an Evo3D.... that was fun. I got it right the first time by some luck....

I know right. I hate how the only way to root the newer HTC devices is by doing sketchy wire tricks.
Dunno about the ET4G, but my Epic was fairly easy to root. But the GS3 was much easier. My wife's Photon Q was about the same as the GS3.
I had an HTC but never played with it due to watching a friend ruin multiples of them. So I never attempted. Had my gs3 for three days before I rooted and started modding. For never doing this before and having mediocre comp skills this was fairly simple. Just want to make sure I cover my bases before doing something wrong.

Looking for advice

Well long story short my phone took a crap and didnt want to pay a replacement fee. So im using the epic 4g till end of contract.
Now im looking to see bout running cm10.+ but says if i wanna go back i need the S1 pit file. It leads to dead links. If anyone has a good link could they send the link to me.
Also what do u think r good solid roms and devs to follow on this phone.

You only need the pit file if you're going back to totally stock condition. To switch/revert to anything that runs on MTD partition format (i.e. all recent custom ROMs), including a few Gingerbread-TouchWiz-based ones, all you need to do is wipe and flash the package.
And for me official CM beats everything else in terms of stability.

PIT file is located in the Odin download on my devhost, located in my signature. If for whatever reason you don't see the download or the PIT file is missing, PM me and I'll reupload.

Ok, that is more understandable than what i have read. Im a big fan of CM and AOKP, so how do the jelly bean versions work and does it help with battery life?

The folder said zero files, thats why i stopped, lol. Now i understand the whole pit file and mtd im ready for some custom roms. What u think r some good roms for the phone. Any tricks on battery life? The roms i use to use on old phone got a lot more time out of use.

They're all good with battery life, but we are using a very old phone. If you experience crap battery life, you may want to consider buying a new Samsung battery. I'd recommend the Epic 4G Touch's battery off Amazon.
Gingerbread will always have the best battery life on our phone.
There aren't many ICS roms in the first 5 pages of the dev forum, but they're ok.
JB is the latest set of actively developed roms. Each phone reacts differently to the resource needs.
Guess ill be getting a new battery. With very little use i lose between 5 to 8 percent an hour. Im hoping at least cm10.1 will work good enough for a daily. Honestly with an older phone its really not bad just battery been a bummer.
