Well long story short my phone took a crap and didnt want to pay a replacement fee. So im using the epic 4g till end of contract.
Now im looking to see bout running cm10.+ but says if i wanna go back i need the S1 pit file. It leads to dead links. If anyone has a good link could they send the link to me.
Also what do u think r good solid roms and devs to follow on this phone.

You only need the pit file if you're going back to totally stock condition. To switch/revert to anything that runs on MTD partition format (i.e. all recent custom ROMs), including a few Gingerbread-TouchWiz-based ones, all you need to do is wipe and flash the package.
And for me official CM beats everything else in terms of stability.

PIT file is located in the Odin download on my devhost, located in my signature. If for whatever reason you don't see the download or the PIT file is missing, PM me and I'll reupload.

They're all good with battery life, but we are using a very old phone. If you experience crap battery life, you may want to consider buying a new Samsung battery. I'd recommend the Epic 4G Touch's battery off Amazon.
Gingerbread will always have the best battery life on our phone.
There aren't many ICS roms in the first 5 pages of the dev forum, but they're ok.
JB is the latest set of actively developed roms. Each phone reacts differently to the resource needs.
Guess ill be getting a new battery. With very little use i lose between 5 to 8 percent an hour. Im hoping at least cm10.1 will work good enough for a daily. Honestly with an older phone its really not bad just battery been a bummer.

Not if you follow the proper directions.
Also I think everyone should invest a few bucks in "Mobile ODIN Pro" and root file explorer. Those two apps are all you need to ensure you are safe. Check MD5's and such with root explorer, and mobile ODIN pro lets you safely odin kernels, modems, roms, stock roms, etc with built in MD5 checking.

If u want that rom just go in development section and check out ff11 rom from sfhub. It's real easy to install. The proces seems complicated not because it's hard but because I got use to a completely different method of flashing.. I guess we just got to get used to the process

I just wanna warn you that sometimes when following an OP's instructions, you may accidentally make a mistake. Therefore I advise you first to understand what you are flashing before you flash it. I.e. in case you don't already know, learn what a kernel is, what different types of kernels are, what not to do (read the brick thread - I think it's a sticky), etc. Also, remember to always make nandroids and check md5 sums.

I agree with both bigtoysrock and wormsign. Follow the OP 100%. I bricked the other day cuz I didn't follow it. Learned my lesson the hard way. Luckily, Sprint replaced it.
Qbking77's vids have been a huge help for me too. I highly recommend them.
guess i should have went with my gut feeling i flashed a few touchwiz roms with no probs then i tried to flask aokp and got a emmc error phone bootlooped then tried to flash back to stock with odin and get stuck on data.img guess i bricked it in one day and it isnt a sprint device i got it off craigs list and flashed it to verizon so no insurance o well maybe there will be a fix soon =(
Maybe some of you on custom ROMs have noticed that your second core functions strange, which would also mean terrible battery life and abnormally hot phones.
Well, this is due to something causing the cores to switch governors to "performance" upon boot. The only way to fix it is from a script or other app that controls CPU. That's not all. The second core seems to not function according to specs. It will either always stay on, or always stay off. mpdecision doesn't appear to work properly.
Well, I've narrowed this down to "samsungani" and "samsungpowersound" which are located in /system/bin/. Removing these at an attempt to get custom boot animations working and to get rid of boot sounds are what's causing the funky core behaviors.
The fix is to restore the two files and chmod them 755 as well as chgrp to 2000 to get them back to the way they're supposed to be.
I'm not sure if any of this effects custom kernels but it sure does on the Stock kernel.
The file I uploaded will restore the samsungani and samsungpowersoundplay files to /system/bin/ as well as copy over silent PowerOn and PowerOff sounds.
Wow that's awesome that you figured this out. Great job!!

Nah, the zip will only be adding those files back to /system//bin/ if they were removed, like in order to get support for custom boot animations.

Do we need to flash this after we flash a rom obviously your rom will have the fix so I'm not worried about it but for others who arent using your rom.

Well, it really only will matter if your current ROM includes a different boot animation and/or removes those files. In any other case, it will do nothing.

OK thanks again love the rom I know you get asked this a lot but if you ever need a tester let me know I use to test for mijuah but my son stole my s2 so I'm bored now lol.
Zip applied, and I had to duplicate the process to confirm what I thought I saw:
Been running blazer 1.6 for a few days now and I honestly don't know what (if any) boot animations are built into that rom, but in the spirit of testing (and flash addiction) I used this zip.
This is what I noticed (and duplicated to confirm)--
Chainfire's live dmesg/logcat (I used paid versions) were replaced by this zip file.
When I "reinstalled" the first attempt found no boot animation files. I attempted install again and this time it did indeed "repair" the logcat/dmesg boot screen.
This is my first dual core so I have no experience in these apps working or not on such phones.
If this is wide spread then perhaps chainfire might want to look into an update to his code, if this is specific to the sgs3 then maybe we have deeper issues to delve into.
Sprint...LF9...Blazer1.6...no other customizations

Which instructions have you looked at? And have you tried seeing if following the Windows instructions worked? It should work about the same when running programs such as Odin or Heimdall. The hardest part will probably be finding the proper phone drivers and software that work with Linux.
Edit: If possible, try using a virtual machine in linux. Apparently some people in other forums were able to use WINE in Linux when using Windows software. (I currently use Windows so that's as much information I can give you).

I'm in Canada and my carrier is wind mobile (3g/wcdma only service) on the g2x with a 1980 mah battery barely made it over 14 hours. However, this setup gives me around 24 hours uptime with approximately 3.5 hours screen on time. So once you spanking it to your like, should be good.

Maybe thats the reason you have a linux box. I have one cuz i like the freedom and power it provides. Which in turn allows for easy and awesome customization. You can customize a Window OS a great deal too. Again for me its the freedom and power. I have been using arch awhile now. A little before the glibc symlink issue. Which broke your system if you updated. So im not new to Linux nor am I wet behind the ears.
i figured i would share with someone who isnt an elitist bsd user like yourself. Who just wants a distro with everything already installed. Some people dont have the time or are just new and havent learned that much yet but want to root their phones. idk either way i thought it was cool.
the bsd in my name is actually just a coincidence, but there is a good chance of arch having heimdall. open terminal and do "pacman -Ss heimdall" you will get a result. you would then do "sudo pacman -S result" it would download and install it. There may also be a heimdall-frontend get it as well, so you can do everything with a gui. Once you have them installed run it as root, or else it won't work. Arch is an awesome distro. Never switch distros and learn.

are you really trying to school me on using pacman? lol Ive been using Arch for over a year and a half i would hope i know how to use its package managaer! i told you ive been using it since before the glibc symlink issue so i dont know what your trying to accomplish here?! i can program in a few languages too.
i asked this question cuz im new the samsung galaxy. im comkng from the g2x. Which was an awesome phone!! ive had it for 2 years and the tools to flash cwm were linux scripts. Flashing roms was as easy as downloading it then rebooting into recovery from the terminal, wiping, then flashing. So now im back at square one cuz my g2x screen broke for the 3rd time. so i figured i try something new.
on top of it my laptop hard drive crashed and i havent had the time to transfer my data from the burned out hdd to the new one. so i just run live cds. i roof for a living too. 5 days a week and have a fiance and a kid. so my freetimebisnt spent on a computer. idk where this thread is going but i got what i need to know... heimdall. yeah thanks

Use the Galaxy S2 Tool (based on Odin) here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1650908
T989 is the Hercules. So you should be good.
As for recovery, go with the new Twrp it is just bulletproof. CWM has some issues with some of the newer roms along with some wiping issue.
So first flash a recovery (CWM or touch) via the above tool (some older versions are included), then once you reboot to CWM /CWM touch simply flash the below TWRP recovery. It will replace the existing recovery after reboot. Make your stock nandroid with
TWRP, CWM backups are not compatible with TWRP and vice versa.

heres evloutions link
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2181976
Now how would I go about doing that? I'm pretty sure I found that thread earlier but it didn't have instructions. Would I just put it into the root storage and flash it like I would for a ROM or gapps package?

Thank you, now its time to flash this *****! Hopefully it'll give me a bit of a performance/battery life increase. I also read something in another thread mentioning the connections optimizer I believe? I couldn't find it again, but it said deleting/uninstalling/freezing that and another similar app would improve download speed and battery life but it wasn't very detailed nor could I find them when I searched through everything in my file explorer. I also didn't want to delete anything that sounded that important without knowing for sure because I surely can't afford to brick my phone

It's not going to be on jelly beer or any aosp ROM.. it is a built in the settings stock app and If your inclined to freeze it (which im not saying do, never did it myself or read anyone doing it but could use titanium as long as your rooted) but if your on any of our custom ROMs the Dev of it will help you it with most issues, our devs here are in a class of their own..... simply superb

I think this is included in the stock rom and I think most custom roms get rid of it. If this is incorrect please someone correct me

Did a clean install of dirty unicorns and lighting zap kerneral and every since i got no data no phone calls out or texts no nothing any ideas ?
Well if you came from a touchwiz Rom (including stock) you prolly still have a JB Modem. Look under about phone and see if it says GB27 under baseband. If so you need to flash an ICS modem. Get one here... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1764210

Ok that rules out the easy one. It would not hurt to flash the FI27 modem. If that don't get you anywhere I personally would check the md5 then dirty flash the Rom over itself to restore the stock kernel. That'll help narrow the possibilities.

I sent him a flashable FI27 modem. For some reason his el29 was not working for him. I only suggested the FI27 modem cause I know my copy is good. If you want to try it, drop me a PM and I'll send you the DB link.

hey thats cool and would try that but right now my phone is a paper weight that i can't seem to get out of bootlooping .. stock sprint jellybean
Get into download mode.
Grab a one click full restore gb27. And use that to get you back.
If you are having problems getting into download mode, be patient. If the partitions are jacked up you have to be quick with the fingers - on and off of the keys to get to download mode.
Also take the battery out of the phone for a full 30 earth minutes before you try again to let the capacitor I completely drain.
If your getting boot loops you haven't bricked...yet

just put phone in d/l mode to use the one click, click the exe and tell it where to extract, click on extracted file wait for it to open, then put phone in D/L mode and connect usb, click start and wait....... whala restored phone!
