Hi guys,
Today I brought a new T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S II for cheap. It already got stock JB rom 4.1.2 installed and I rooted the phone. I have 2 questions.
1) I would like to sim unlock the phone without calling t-mobile if possible. I tried checked out Galaxy_s unlock by helroz and there was one other app, but it would not allow me to install it. Anybody got any ideas how to do it?
2) I would like to have this stock JB rom if possible rooted of course, but I would like to set up wireless tethering and don't pay extra to t-mobile for doing it? Thanks.

You can try this: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2024514
It will take a lot of reading and some work but it is free. You can also pay someone for an unlock code.
Also, questions should be posted in Q&A.

Thanks, I tried. It doesn't work probably because I have a JB stock rom. I think I have to revert to an ICS stock rom with a different modem in order for it to work.

I have another question, if I were to install this rom above, do I have to install thru kies or use twrp? Thanks.

I think the file in that link is for Odin. You should be able to TWRP flash any of the ICS ROMs in the development thread and then flash the UVLE1 radio.

Actually, I installed cm9 ics rom and it didn't work when I pressed *#197328640#. I mentioned in the other thread, but I managed to install the stock ICS versio with the uvle1 radio and I managed to unlock it.

I forgot to say it had to be an ICS TW ROM. Sorry about that. Glad you got it sorted.

New Glide - root first & update ICS with kies or vice versa?
Hi,
I searched across various threads and still not able to figure out what is correct (may be both are okay??)?
I have a brand new Glide (ATT). I want to root the phone and have CWM installed. I see that ICS update is available through Samsung Kies.
I would like to know if I should update to ICS and go for Unlocking? Or, Unlock first and go for ICS update? With the 2nd approach, I am not sure if Samsung Kies might fail to update to ICS, if the phone is rooted?????
Also, I am lost in numerous threads and Qs. Can someone post the link to the official 'rooting' thread?
Also, I am curious to know if the rooting implicitly means S-OFF and unlocking the phone?
Thanks!

Flash one of the AOSP-based ROMs (I personally recommend CM10.1). They're pre-rooted. CWM just gives you the ability to flash stuff without relying on Odin and its limited and poorly-understood image format.
I have a rooted Galaxy S3 with stock rom.
I keep getting a pop up for a system update, but cant update.
Please tell me how to manually update, and (where) I can find the latest stock updated software

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

You can flash a new recovery using ODIN, or Mobile ODIN. I use Mobile ODIN. There's a thread on recoveries here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=31894089

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

I had a question about unlocking my T989D. Its running CM10 atm and the latest telus modem. If i want to unlock it, do i follow the normal procedure of giving a site my IMEI, and do the usual, or do i need to be on a Telus rom(and does it have to be a stock unrooted rom)
Thanks!
Also, anyone know a cheap site!
No, it doesnt have to be telus stock unrooted rom. Just be careful when you choose a site to unlock from though because some sites will ask you to download a software which is not needed.
Try this site: unlockthatphone.com (This is one of the options but you may find cheaper.)
I used that site to unlock my g2x but not my galaxy s2 because it was factory unlocked.

It's through the normal phone dialer. You gotta enter a code that unlock websites give you after giving them your IMEI number.

It would make sense that Samsung would create the unlocking feature inherited for the T-Mobile ROMs as well. Just flash any touchwiz ROM in dev section and go ahead with unlocking. Then u can flash back to cm9.

Basically is there a foolproof method to SIM unlock a n7100?

Did that rom flash a bootloader? I woukd imagine it did but might be worth double checking. Dunno if.it.would.make.a.difference or not though either. If all else fails and you cant do.it for.free a good.option is GalaxSimUnlock - will yell.you if.it can be done before you pay fot it and its cheap. I used it on an s2 and woukd recommend it
try it on the older rom

The ROMs that contain the correct radio are all going to be on sammobile.com
It's just a case of finding the correct file and knowing what to look for. I'm trying out the XXALIE, still downloading...
Look on sammobile.com and start typing '7100XX' or '7100XXA' and you should start seeing relevant ROMs. Report back if you find one that works please, I'm sure the information will help others like me.

If I remember right, once on 4.3 you can no longer use the free unlock method. You will have to buy a code online. If you have a T999, you can try flashing the 4.1.1 modem and see if you can do it though. You wont get any signal if you are on a 4.3 rom until you flash back to the 4.3 modem btw.

You dont need to be rooted, but you do need a custom recovery (TWRP or CWM) in order to flash the modem. I never made any odin flashable packages for the modems, only recovery flashable.
Just so you know, flashing a custom recovery will void your warranty if its still valid and you care about that.
Thanks bro, I don't care about warranty.... So all I have to do now is flash a recovery then flash the modem, hmm wonder if anyone has ever got it to work like that before tho.... If it doesn't tho can u recommend a cheap unlocking site please

All I remember for sure is that on 4.1.2, samsung patched against this unlock method, but we were still able to flash the 4.1.1 modem and unlock. In 4.3, you cant use an older modem or youll get no signal, but Im just not sure if you can still use the free unlock method that way.
Ebay had several very cheap options at one point. Also, http://gsmliberty.net has/had(?) a promo where if you posted a video of yourself unlocking using their method they would refund you your money, essentially making it free. Not sure if that is still valid though.

Any 4.1.1 modem, as long as its one for your model device. If you wanted you could see if flashing a 4.1.1 or 4.1.2 rom would make a difference, but as before, I kinda doubt it will.
When we were updated to 4.1.2, and found that the unlock method was patched, all we had to do was flash an older modem. Didnt matter what build it was from.
agree
