The process is no different than the AT&T Glide...
...and we can't help you without more information.

Download samsung kies and plug in your phone. It should say right off that there is an update.

New Glide - root first & update ICS with kies or vice versa?
Hi,
I searched across various threads and still not able to figure out what is correct (may be both are okay??)?
I have a brand new Glide (ATT). I want to root the phone and have CWM installed. I see that ICS update is available through Samsung Kies.
I would like to know if I should update to ICS and go for Unlocking? Or, Unlock first and go for ICS update? With the 2nd approach, I am not sure if Samsung Kies might fail to update to ICS, if the phone is rooted?????
Also, I am lost in numerous threads and Qs. Can someone post the link to the official 'rooting' thread?
Also, I am curious to know if the rooting implicitly means S-OFF and unlocking the phone?
Thanks!

Install the Custom rom Lite rom 0.9, or a Rooted Stock rom. Install it via CWM

Flash one of the AOSP-based ROMs (I personally recommend CM10.1). They're pre-rooted. CWM just gives you the ability to flash stuff without relying on Odin and its limited and poorly-understood image format.

are we still waiting for the official jellybean?

i posted a thread about a couple of weeks ago, asking how to update to the official jellybean.
then people said it's not official and it's just a preview version and i should wait for the official version.
so.. my question is.. are we still waiting for it?
if it already came out, how would i update my unlocked & rooted 4.0.4 official yakju to officialy 4.1 jellybean?
please help,
wow surprise surprise.
as soon as i posted this message and looked at my phone, it says "system update is available blah blah...."
but when i posted that previous post, some guy said i won't be able to receive OTA updates if i have custom fonts and clockwork recovery mode installed...
so what's going on? i'm very confused... (yes i'm a noob)..
and if i accept this update, will i lose unlock and root?
and all my contact info and data too?

If you've modified your /system and have a custom recovery installed, OTA will fail. Just flash the update through custom recovery.

I have not tried this myself. I always flash back to stock to accept an OTA.
Free tool trying to protect root across manufacturer's OTA updates:
http://www.google.com/#hl=en&gs_nf=...f.,cf.osb&fp=ce19979f0aca28f&biw=1280&bih=655
If you are completely stock and on stock recovery you can accept the OTA. Search the forums or google how to forever root or keep root on a galaxy nexus. Worst case you can flash back to stock 4.0.4
Before doing so:
Make backups of everything. Pics, contact, nandroid backups, music, etc......Become familiar with the different recoveries. Google will provide videos and links how to do this. There are a number of apps that you should use to flash ROMs most are free but I recommend the paid versions. Do your homework and you will better understand the essential of what you are doing.

Take a look in the android dev sections to this forum. If you ever update once rooted, you should be flashing a new ROM (clean or dirty flashing) to receive the next update. Running stock ROM in between a Sammy update and while having the older ROM without the newest update will yield that result.

There are plenty of reasons for rooting but remaining stock (such as: tethering, Droid wall, Titanium Backup to allow me to backup and restore app data, removing bloat, etc).
I have flashed custom rooms in the past on my Evo but right now I am happy with my S3 at stock.

I was in the same boat at you. I put it off for a while but finally decided to update tonight. I followed the steps posted here.
You can update your baseband by flashing a properly packaged official baseband zip, or flash from recovery tool (my preference), like the one here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=29820376. There are also unofficial, or leaked basebands, available to flash from all-in-one zips, such as the one here: http://goo.im/devs/freeza/Galaxy-S-fre3-LIGFirmwareModemAIO.zip.
As far as the build version goes, that does not have to match your baseband (modem). Most of the ICS ROMs are LG8, although there are some LI3 ICS ROMs to choose from. There's also a leaked build of Jellybean, builds LIF & LIG, with a third leak LIH reportedly coming out tomorrow. Once rooted, you can update your build version by flashing the ROM of your choice, based upon the build of your choice.
One of the top developers, and probably the greatest asset to this community, is freeza. He explained the difference very well here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=32095775
That's a long-winded response, but I hope it answered your original question, and helps you out.
Have fun!
Edit: Once you're rooted, you'll still receive OTA update notifications, which will continually annoy you until you choose to update and reboot. Once you reboot, the update will fail because of your custom recovery (you will NOT lose root) and the notification will go away....until the next OTA...

Excuse me for my stupidity but I'm new to android. I'm also using the sprint variant of the s3 and have it rooted with stock rom. However my build number is IMM76D.L710VPALF9. I'm assuming the last 3 are the update versions. What is the current version and how do I update to it?
Also, I'm rooted with Clockwork mod 5.5.0.4. How do I upgrade this to version 6.0.1.2? Will I have to unroot then root again?
Thanks for clearing anything you can up. Don't mean to pirate the OP but I figured I'd post in this thread rather than make a new one. Thanks again.

That is one of the reasons that I am rooted... so I can use WiFi Tether. I do not it much. Hardly any data at all. But when I am in a spot and need a wireless connection and I only have my phone it comes in handy.
Some other reasons:
- DroidWall: Lets me block individual apps from accessing the internet.
- AddFree: Block ads in some apps.
why would you do that?

[Q] Sprint Samsung Galaxy S3 Rooted ICS... Should I OTA JB?

I have a Samsung Galaxy S3 (SPH L710) from Sprint that I rooted a few months ago. I'm not too familiar with rooting, but knew I needed to do it to utilize the Wifi Tether app I wanted to use. It's worked pretty well ever since, only have to re-start the wifi app sometimes to make it actually connect.
For the past week I've been getting tons of pop-ups advising that there's a new update I should accept and install. I would assume this is Jellybean. So, I have a few questions:
1. If I'm already rooted and I accept this, will it delete my root?
2. I have SuperUser v. 3.1.3 which has a check box "temp unroot" If I check this box then allow the over the air update, will it allow me to go back and uncheck this box after the uprade to JB, thus restoring my root?
3. I researched apps in the Playstore and came across one from Voodoo called "OTA RootKeeper" if I use this, (or can I even use it on this device?) will it allow me to simply accept the OTA upgrade and then it'll re-root the phone afterwards?
4. How can I disable the OTA pop-up notice?
Please excuse my elementary questions... I know enough to read a basic set of instructions to get the root on the device (I've previously rooted a few Evo's and unrooted one all successfully), I also know how to Google questions I have and tried using the search feature here, but didn't really see answers to the questions I have.
I'd appreciate the assistance!!
It's not jb, but if your stock rooted just use root keeper and temporary unroot.

The update they want me to load isn't JB? It's pretty big, like 85MB... Any idea what it is then? Think I can simply accept it and it'll install or will I need to check the temp unroot box in SuperUser first?

its the li3 update. Would temp unroot. you need stock recovery too with no altered system files. Would be easier to use one of the ones from here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1904099 or here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1743923
Once rooted, you cannot accept OTA updates due to having a custom recovery. You can get rid of the notification, without installing anything or losing root, two ways (that I know of). The easiest is by accepting the OTA and letting it fail.
Possibly the hardest/riskiest is to edit your build.prop and change everything that references the older build to the newer one, ie changing all LG8 references to LI3.
Updating is, once rooted, based upon preference. You should always investigate the changes from one version to the next, & decide if those address issue(s) you may have experienced. Updates will generally address one, or all, of the following: kernel performance (could impact battery life, hardware performanc, etc.), baseband performance (could impact cellular reception, network speeds, wifi performance, bluetooth, etc.), firmware updates (could impact overall hardware performance & functionality), &/or system software updates (could impact hardware/software performance, user interface).
The beauty of being rooted is that you have the choice of addressing all of the above at once, or being selective and updating only the items that address what you want them to. For example, you can choose to update your kernel only, or to just flash a new baseband & update your modem.
I choose to run a custom ROM based on the LG8 software build, paired with the leaked LIF baseband & firmware, and the stock LI3 kernel. I've found this combo to give me the best battery life, cellular & wifi performance, hardware performance, and stable day-to-day UI.
If you absolutely just have to have the latest of everything, use one of the methods described in the previous posts.
Good luck, and have fun!
EDIT: PRL can be updated regardless of root status...just an FYI...

That would be the easiest way. Get all the updates, then root once. But, you will need to use one of the previously mentioned methods for all future updates, like JB. When you get to that point, I have found the easiest way to do it is to get rid of the notification by letting the update fail, then waiting for one of the nice people here to offer a rooted version of the update w/kernel (odex, not deodex, unless you plan on developing stuff yourself) and an AIO (all-in-one) firmware update like here. You can just flash those through CWM or TWRP.

@jmdatcs: Thanks a lot for the reply. I will apply all updates and then will do the root using qbking77 method which I guess is the easiest or should I use the qcom toolkit?
I do not want to flash any custom ROM right away as it has ICS by default. I will get the custom ROM for Jellybean once its available, through CWM or TWRP as you mentioned.

[Q] Wireless Tethering and sim unlocking

Hi guys,
Today I brought a new T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S II for cheap. It already got stock JB rom 4.1.2 installed and I rooted the phone. I have 2 questions.
1) I would like to sim unlock the phone without calling t-mobile if possible. I tried checked out Galaxy_s unlock by helroz and there was one other app, but it would not allow me to install it. Anybody got any ideas how to do it?
2) I would like to have this stock JB rom if possible rooted of course, but I would like to set up wireless tethering and don't pay extra to t-mobile for doing it? Thanks.

Thanks, I tried. It doesn't work probably because I have a JB stock rom. I think I have to revert to an ICS stock rom with a different modem in order for it to work.

I think the file in that link is for Odin. You should be able to TWRP flash any of the ICS ROMs in the development thread and then flash the UVLE1 radio.

Actually, I installed cm9 ics rom and it didn't work when I pressed *#197328640#. I mentioned in the other thread, but I managed to install the stock ICS versio with the uvle1 radio and I managed to unlock it.

I forgot to say it had to be an ICS TW ROM. Sorry about that. Glad you got it sorted.

Hi guys,
Today I brought a new T-mobile Samsung Galaxy S II for cheap.
Thanks.

sup dude... look theres a way to do it i just dont recall how... you have to be rooted and get a file that has a lot of numbers in which you will find the unlock code. its in these forums somewhere but it is possible to do cause i was able to do it on cm10 4.1.2 . ill look around and see if i find it. ill keep you updated.

I747M identified as I9300 ?

Hi,
Got an GT-I9300 from Amazon just to discover that is a SGH-I747M but tweaked to show it as a 9300.
Now I'm stuck in 4.04 and can't upgrade to 4.1.2, tried stock 747m ROM but odin upload fails. Ofcourse Kies upgrade is not available.
Any way to solve this?

You sure you don't have that flipped? An I9300 that shows as a 747m
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Before you attempt to flash anything, download an app to verify which processor or amount of ram you have. If you flash the wrong thing, you'll end up with a nice shiny paperweight.

I'm pretty sure is a 747, if you check the screenshots I posted, the phone has 2 cores (vs 4 of the 9300) and more RAM than the 9300.

Yes, check the posted screenshots. Says hardware is 747
Your links aren't working to for me to see the pics but if the hardware is i747 then you will only want to flash i747 ROMs. Its a fairly simple matter to edit the file descriptors to change the information that shows in the about phone menu. I have been seeing alot of this from recent Amazon S3 purchases, sounds like some kind of scheme to make more money.

Just replace the spaces in the original post links
I've tried with 747 roms without luck, thats why I'm asking what I should do in this case
I'm pretty sure that I'm not the first wanting to have the correct ROM
Ahh silly me, didnt notice the space
Anyways, it has the correct gpu/chipset to be an i747, so your suspicions are correct. The next question is what isn't working when trying to flash to stock? Error codes etc.

Dont worry. I put the space because this forums blocks links for new users
Software update with OTA simply says "error processing". -> i.imgur. com/0ALVRSd.png
Over Kies gives the message I posted on the first screenshot
I can't remember the exact error on ODIN, I'll take a look and post

Yeah, similar issue here. About Phone says i9300. When I booted into download mode, it said SGH I747. When I tried using GooManager to install a custom recovery, it detected the phone as 'd2can'. I'm bewildered.

d2can is an i747m aka the canadian version which is identical to the us variant hardware wise.

Before i did anything i would make sure that you are able to flash a stock rom in case of any problems.

And that brings us to my other question: Which ROM is gonna be the stock ROM? The i747 in the Download mode screen?

I would recommend following the steps in this thread to verify the hardware is infact that of an i747, if so use Odin the flash a stock i747 rom of your choice.

Except 4.3 stock unless you want to be there for a while(can not downgrade) and face a whole world of hurt if you are not using your exact carriers modem/bootrom.
So guys is there any solution? I can't flash stock 747 ROM via odin or kies. I'm stuck on 4.04 forever?
