[Q] trying to bi-pass t-mobile's throttling efforts - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S 4

About the same time every month, I get throttled. Have impressive wi-fi speeds at home, but some how with r without wi-fi -- calls don't get through and the phone gets jammed-up. It always takes me a minute, tho ...after frantically dumping junk files, jst b4i abort tasks, it hits me. I f/n loathe t-mobile. Please help!

this doesnt sound like data throttling. What rom are you running? and if your running stock, it might be hardware related. I would say that your service just sucks in your area, but if calls dont get through even on wifi, its not the service
And even if it was data throttling, if tmobile wants to throttle your data, they are going to do it, and theres no way to bypass that. If there was a way no one would be on the unlimited plan, and it wouldnt be discussed here on xda, because that would be fraud

i stand corrected
doesnt change the fact that it doesnt sound like data throttling though
also, i didnt think that bypassing data throttles would be so easy

That's for the S3 though, hard telling if it would work on the S4

ill try it myself later today, its 4 in the morn here and i dont have the energy to do it lol

So long as you are on T-Mobile's network, it is IMPOSSIBLE to bypass the throttling. All the hits you are getting, were for older phones and older networks. T-Mobile has gotten smart since then. All throttling is done via their servers and NOT the phone. All data counting is done on their end. Not the phone. So its impossible to bypass it. Your best bet is to go with unlimited plan if you use that much data. I love my unlimited plan.

I totally agree. I actually started a note yesterday to the mods asking about this very thing. Why do the rules here speak about not posting warez or about stealing developers software here but it is ok to discuss how to steal things that the providers charge for? People ask straight out...."How can I steal".....and thats OK? If you try to bypass things that are normally charged for , like unlock codes, throttleing bypass, or tethering without paying, it is, IMHO stealing.
OK let the bashing begin

When I pay $629.99 for something, I'll do precisely what I want with it. I could apply your own logic and tell you that you shouldn't root your phone or install custom ROMs, but without that, what would XDA be? Food for thought.
Edit: Sorry, the bit about unlocking rubbed me the wrong way, but to be fair, I will say that I think attempting to bypass the throttling is too far over the line. Tethering.... that's another story. You pay for your data, use it how you want.

I highly agree with your edit
However, anyone can try as hard as they like to bypass the throttling, its no longer done on the phone itself. Its done on T-Mobiles end. The hack posted in that thread doesnt even work. If you look at the system services running when being throttled, there is not a single service labled "Throttle Service" plus if it were software related, CM ROMs shouldnt throttle but they do. It is all server based throttling now based off your cell phone number and IMEI (T-Mobile's way of detecting who you are )

New Info!
Although this thread is old as dirt, I came across it because no one is really talking about this anymore as it appears to be Impossible to Bypass the T-mo Throttle....
But I have Positive Confirmation as I'm cooking at about 300KB/s Right now!!!!
Not sure why but I have a Sitemap Generator that when it creates a Sitemap it runs at full speed, and Also my Windows 7 Updates run at full speed!!!
Here's the situation and Maybe someone else can confirm with a Like setup, My GSR2 (I-727) Blew Up, So I had to go back to a REAL OLD P506, running 2.2 or 2.4 some crap like that, I'm using Paid FoxFi with USB Connect and Tether Block 1, Which I'm not even supposed to be doing!!! as I'm Off my 2.5Gigs of 4g, Which this phone only goes 3g/Edge anyhow...
Here's a Screen Shot of my Data Speed... Meant to post on this Months ago when I switched to T-mo, but never got to it...
Reason I'm Posting now, Is because I think this Needs to be Revisited, as Apparently it IS POSSIBLE!

P.S. Regular Transfers/Downloads/Webpages Etc, Run about 15-20KB/s

[Q] Which Rom Should I use?

I am using Bonsai 3.01. I have found that my battery life is not the best. The disapearing icons, is annoying but not the worst. Overall its been an ok ROM, but I was looking to see what else I could use.
I need
Great Battery life
Smooth handling
I would like
better flash support (I assumed in 2.2.1 I would be able to go to say Justin tv or such a site and watch live videos. Maybe this is not possible, but I would like it)
An easy way to restore all programs and data.
Thank you for the help and suggestions.

i have tried both stock and custom ext4 roms. I say stay away from ext4 roms with journaling disabled as you will lose data and need to reflash your device evey few days. I went about four days before i started getting force closes and the alike. I also am loving the stock, dont really see a need for custom. and really sprint is discounting the phones so whats really wrong with carrier iq, its on their network and they have a right to know what we do with their phones. I also think that we should have to return the phones once the contracts are up or closed out for some reason. also for national security all voice / data / text and all should be save for national security reasons.
You're welcome to your opinions, user above.
SRF1.1.0 will have a journaled option.

How long have you worked for Sprint?
I ask because you are on an android development website that is dedicated primarily to making the phones a better phone than stock.
Check your paycheck, I'm sure sprint gave you your bonus for that brownie dig.
Also, if I pay $400-$600 for a phone, it's mine not Sprint's.
Frozen Rom Syndicate all the way for me. Love this thing now and it's not because Sprint made it this way.

I've been on ext4, no-journaling since it first appeared on a ROM, in what January? I haven't had a single problem with data corruption. If you're having to reflash every few days, you're doing something wrong. I believe it's misleading to state as a fact that "you will lose data".
To the OP my personal preference is Bonsai 4.0 right now. I've also tried the Syndicate ROM and found it very very good. They're both blazing fast and seem to be leading the way in development progress. If you're looking for stability as top priority, Nebula and Epic Experience were very good in the past, though I haven't kept up with them recently and I don't think they're based off the latest. Official release yet.
The best thing to do though is decide for yourself. Read the Wikis, FAQs, and Guides. Read about the ROMS you're interested in. These threads can get awful long and intimidating, but reading them is your best fried. Certainly read the original posts, get a feel for the developers philosophy. If you can't read the whole thing, read the last 10-20 pages and see what issues/opnions there are on the latest release. If you've read enough to be comfortable with the flashing process, try a few before settling on a daily driver.
And backup. Always backup!
Is 1.1 available? I only see the thread for 1.0.2.
Also is it based on EC05? everything I am reading makes me think that version is awful for battery life.
thanks again!

I'm waiting on this. Is it using EC05?
I'm really enjoying both Bonsai 4.0.0 and midnightROM v5. I guess they are essentially the same...but both have been awesome for me.
my friend recieved a letter from sprint saying he was rooted and using a custom rom and that he had to either take it in to a sprint store to return to stock and pay a fee to do so or his contracted would be terminated and he would owe the early termination fee as the contract forbids rooting of the phones. I quess like ATT sprint is now also able to tell who is rooted. i am guessing by when devs but their names into the system properties. and no he did not use it for wifi/wired tether.

Ummm its not illegal it just voids your warranty..
but someone would have to be REALLY unlucky to brick an Epic...
So i wouldn't believe your friend that sprint threatened him with terminating his contract plus ACS Syndicate has Carrier IQ removed so sprint won't know if you're on that ROM...

Wow, where to start. Ignoring the fact that you obviously sound like some sort of sprint jerk off.
I'm a very amateur "rooter". I follow the directions on the ROMS/dev's thread to the T, and have never had a problem. I most recently updated to ACS 1.0.2. And was the first time I ever had problems. But I asked for help on their thread, and was getting responses almost in real time(thanks impaler you rock!). I have just downloaded ACS 1.1.0 and am stoked to start trying it out. In short, it is safe!
Just stick to builds that are stated as being safe for daily use. Don't go download the CM7 Alpha 1 build and then complain.
Um I'm sorry, I pay for the service; voice, data, sms, etc. And I bought my phone. So they don't have the "right" to know what I do with the service or what I do with the phone. Now if we need to return the phones when the contract is up then I need to get a refund on the phone. A 100% refund.
Oh my hell, you did not just bring up "for national security". Now you sound more like a politician. Talk about a steaming pile of bull $#!+, until I do something that warrants my "big brother" hanging over my shoulder, you can shove that. I'll never give up any freedom/privacy for some lame ass excuse as national security. And further more, why should sprint be involved in such matters?
I think I need to go vomit after reading such gestapo-ish garbage.
Or maybe just go to the shooting range (which I'm sure you also think shouldn't be allowed, for "national security").

Sounds like you're just trying to drop a sprint scare tactic to make this one user not root their phone, and see the true potential of the Galaxy device.
And until I see a "scanned", and notarized since I don't believe anything you say, I won't even listen to this garbage.
And as stated earlier, ACS has disabled the Carier IQ. So I don't see how they could possibly know unless you for some reason took it to the sprint store without re-flashing to stock(which by the way. I had a friend that worked at a sprint store. And based on his stories, I would highly recommend completely wiping a phone of any/all information. Texts, emails, pics, web, everything!! Before ever letting one of those perps look at it).

I'd agree they don't have the right to know - or the right to install spyware on our phones - without a court order. That's why I removed Carrier IQ in the first place.
Now, to the user above - the first step is to never tell them you used a custom ROM. Odin to stock first. However, if there's anything wrong with it that's hardware-related - and except in my case, that's the only reason it'll ever be exchanged on warranty - they must fix it if it was not caused by the user.
IANAL, but custom software would fall easily under the realm of the Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act (click for Wikipedia). The MMWA was passed by Congress to stop car manufacturers from declaring warranties void when third-party (aftermarket) parts were used. It generally applied to things like oil filters, but it's been applied successfully to such things as aftermarket exhaust, as well. There's no reason it can't apply here - I believe it does.
They should never know, if you Odin back. But if you ever run into trouble - or if your friend hasn't caved yet - fight back. Don't let that guy, who was probably a knowledgeless low-level rep hungry for power, try to give you that crap. Go over his head, talk to a manager, and if the manager gives you the same line of ****, inform him that you understand your rights under the MMWA. If he still doesn't budge, contact your local Better Business Bureau immediately.
Exercise your rights, people. If you have been sold a product with a warranty, it must be honored unless you caused the damage. It's a matter of federal law.
And if they claim it's a matter of contract? Find it in the contract or tell them to **** themselves and call the BBB.

UNCHECK EVERYTHING EXCEPT "AUTO REBOOT". Ensure you are on CWM3. Wipe data for best results, and flash the ROM." But i dont know how or what is meant by "flash the ROM"? Can someone please help me with this.

Until I personally see a copy of that letter, I call B.S.
I upgraded from the Hero to the Epic. Before I could flash it back to stock, my wife, not knowing any better, took it to the Sprint store to activate it on her number. My phone was rooted running CM6.
Sprint backed up CM6, flashed stock on it and transferred the phone to her number and told her that I should know how to get the rom flashed back.

If I root my phone, can I use it without getting a data plan?

I have a regular phone I use with Sprint....nothing fancy. Off to the side, I have an HTC Evo 4G that play around with at home. If I root this phone, would I be able to hook it up in place of my current phone and not have to pay for a data plan? If I can do that, how does that work?
I think the only thing u can get for free is tethering, and u have to have a data plan for that to work, I'm sure ill be corrected if I'm wrong but I don't think u can get free data.

No you wouldn't be able to get a free data plan. Any smartphone (rooted or not) needs a data plan subscribed or else everyone will do what you are talkin about. Your best bet is just using it on the side with WiFi.

Sounds legit to me. I don't see why you couldn't do this. I would call sprint and just ask. Worst they can say is no.
I actually put you on ignore but I'm on the computer and saw it.
Yes, that's exactly how I perceived it.
And with all due respect to XDA, we have a forum where a lot of users spend their time trying to get out of contracts over 50 cents, trying to scam carriers because they updated OTA and lost root, tethering (and torrenting on the tether) via root methods etc etc etc.
So you'll have to forgive me if I don't assume the best when people ask questions of this nature.

U r correct when it comes to android and most other smartphones. If u want to use it as just a phone but no data they can't do it cause it is constantly using data in the background and can't be stopped. In theory it would be cool but in actuality its not possible.

Anyone else having problems with "unlimited" data on TMO network??

So within 1st 3 days of upgrading to my awesome SGS3 on T-MO, I noticed that anything data related was down to an absolute crawl. Turns out I was streaming all my Amazon music ONLINE and that sucked up my entire month's allowed bandwidth and so was stuck on <56k speeds until my cycle renewed TWO WEEKS later. So I somehow made do without any data until then.
So fast forward 2 weeks later, and I'm throttled ALREADY!! Anyone have any tips/advice on how to keep my data usage lower? I know I can use wifi whenever possible, but even doing so I'm already capped at my data limit before I'm throttled by like 99%. Alternatively, is there any way to increase the "unlimited" cap before I get throttled? I just upgraded my contract and don't want to deal with the ETF/changing carriers.
Any help would be much appreciated... thank you!!

Well on ICS you can monitor and set your own data limits. Another thing you might want to look into is not using amazon music. I know this sounds dumb but if it's causing you to use up so much data use something else. I stream Pandora all month long and never get throttled. I have the 5GB data plan. Oh and since I work for tmobile you should probably call in about this issue so they can compare your actual usage to the networks to make sure it isn't something they might have to fix. Rarely happens but I have seen this at least a few times. All you can do is increase your data plan. and set your limits through ics. or dial #web# and it will display your usage. or go to tmobile.com under usage you can see it here as well.
How much data are you allowed before you are throttled? You might try downloading your audio directly to your device with a wifi connection. You might also try Google Music, which caches lots of what it streams.
There are many data usage tracking apps, but I prefer LBE security in the market. Give it a try.
Thanks for the responses!
To follow up - yes I have since moved all my Amazon mp3s directly onto my phone, so that's no longer a problem. And prior to the S3, I had the MyTouch 4G, which, while not a spectacular phone, did everything I needed. My amazement with the S3 is that, beyond the first few days of accidentally streaming all my usage away with the Amazon mp3s (which was decidedly dumb of me), my data usage habits haven't changed all that much since my older phone. So I was completely blindsided this month when I already hit my data limit.
I'll need to dig into this a bit more with T-MO, but I was asking in the forum to see if anyone knew of any background app or program, or anything specific to the GS3 that would be using a steady stream of data without my knowledge? Again, thanks in advance for your help!

I'll need to dig into this a bit more with T-MO, but I was asking in the forum to see if anyone knew of any background app or program, or anything specific to the GS3 that would be using a steady stream of data without my knowledge? Again, thanks in advance for your help!

It's 2GB.
So after crying to TMO for a while, they told me they could up my limit but I would have to renew again and (of course!) increase my monthly bill which is already ghastly! I guess from the lack of many responses or even any other threads with similar experiences, it probably isn't some hidden data sucker upper program that's the problem here... just me being careless with my data usage... =(
Did you by chance use an upgrade for this phone? If your answer is yes, I might have some insight on this.
You should take a look under Data Usage in your settings to see what apps are using the most data. YouTube tends to be one of the bigger ones if you're on it more than once in a while. Or maybe you have an app that's constantly backing up apps.. That takes a lot of data too. Look around and check their usage.
Turn of syncing, Contacts, Picasa, Mail etc, Check them Manually
Install Opera Mini, uses up to 90% Less data than normal browser BUT loads websites slower
Using Youtube? Turn HQ off, but on this screen the quality will kill you.

To follow up - yes I have since moved all my Amazon mp3s directly onto my phone, so that's no longer a problem. And prior to the S3, I had the MyTouch 4G, which, while not a spectacular phone, did everything I needed. Tmo has been very understanding when my family or I have made similar mistakes. My son went wild downloading games with monthly subscriptions and Tmo made it all go away. Be nice/professional and ask for a manager or the next in command if you are not able to rectify the issue. Being a 10+ year Tmo guy they treat me well. Learn to work the system and stay cool. Sometimes it takes multiple calls to find the right person that is willing to help.
Watch out for Google+ and instant upload along with dropbox too. All 3 will instant upload unless you change the settings

Also see what apps or accounts are set to auto sync and you could limit background processes as I on my s3 staying logged on eBay for instant notifications, having gmail and other apps set to auto sync and too many background processes was costing me 10 to 12 Mega bytes a day times that by 30 days and that's like 300 to360 megabytes a months wasted you can always check your e-mail and stuff manually unless your a business man and relied on heavy notifications this will help you save a lot of data it keeps me safe because I have the five GB plan too and I've went over a lot until I dug into my settings, hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks everyone for your suggestions! I totally forgot about all the background apps/processes that auto-sync... definitely has helped some. Still isn't 100% better, but like someone else suggested earlier, I was able to talk my way through with a helpful rep. I am also a longtime customer, and they seemed to want to work with me, as opposed to giving me the shaft.

Yes, I did an upgrade through Wal-Mart the week it was launched in the US.
Same thing happened to me. I just restarted a cycle.... But the cycle before this one... Some app used nearly a GB of data around 5 in the morning 3 days into the cycle. By the time I realized this and called TMobile... I was up into the 3.6 range... Couldn't track down the app because I was rom jumping. Anyway, TMobile wasn't much help... I thought for sure they would reset my data since they can see my usage history, but no dice. Bastards! :cyclops:

Ouch!! Yeah, I was hoping to have some sort of definitive answer like you did (1 unknown app hogging all the data at some random time) but I really didn't have anything to pin-point the problem. Were you able to remove/disable that app from doing that?
How about you post what apps you have installed and we can all compare and see if anyone else has the same problem with some of the same apps. Just a thought to maybe help you out. Im just bored shopping with the gf lol.

If you're still hitting your cap in the next few months you might consider a 5GB plan. It'll give you quite a bit more data to work with and you can tether with T-Mobile's blessing.

New to Sprint & L900. What's the 411?

Okay, so I've been on Tmobile since taking the dive into the wonderful world of Android. I had the S2 for a few months and thdn after becoming infatuated I went out and got me an S3. Recently I decided to move on to Sprint as the coverage I received at work was, well, nonexistent. So, I am completely new to CDMA and my beautiful new Note 2, and after reading through the forums I've discovered that I am bout back to square one. Well, maybe not entirely, but definitely been knocked back quite a bit. Which when considering I've only been involved in the xda community for about 9 months pretty much leaves me with the feeling that I'm stuck in Paris with no map and no translator. So, I was hoping I could reach out to the wise and informed members of xda and ask a broad, but simple, question. What do I need to know so I don't F up my new mistress? I'm not asking for a tutorial on rooting or flashing, nothing generic. Just some helpful specifics. I saw somewhere that they were talking about resetting Wallet before flashing a new ROM or else it may be blocked on the phone, I guess, forever. I'm also unfamiliar with the modems and the updates yall have gotten. Etc, etc. And as I said, not looking for another, what is the benefit of rooting, what is CWM and TWRP, can I get rid of all the darned Sprint apps baloney. I was just hoping to basically just kinda do a crash course intro, a CDMA and/or L900 101 kinda thing so to speak. Any info you can offer up would be greatly appreciated!

The worst part about the android community, unfortunately, is the fragmentation of general knowledge. The rooting process for a Nexus is probably identical to a Note 2 but the names of everything and builds and versions are all different, so you have to learn new 'words' like it is a new language. Fortunately you have a great community so you just have to learn how to search for things. Check the general section for android development I think there is a sticky that has a glossory of terms that explains all the acronyms.
I've had mine for 3 months but I would still welcome a crash course as well.
Well I prefer twrp as my custom recovery. Depending on your firmware version you can root without your phone ever going to download mode. I did. I used exynos abuse to get root. Then used mobile odin to flash a new rom. Always reset google wallet if you are reseting or flashing a new rom. Its tempermental. I would stay around only the sprint veraion for now. There is a way to use roms from other note 2 variants. I believe its in the dev section. Recovery is standalone. So swirching roms doesnt change it. You cannot talk on the phone and be on the internet at the same time unless you are using wifi or 4glte. If you like to draw or doodle there is sketchbook mobile which is awesome. Btw ma7 is the most current firmware that I know of. Also you can sideload the google wallet apk with no extra work to get it working. Goodluck and read alot.

You need root to do most modifications to your phone. I find that I need root for everyday stuff too (Titanium backup, Stweaks, Root app delete, etc).

ClockWork Mod and TeamWin Recovery Project. Both have custom recovery pieces. I personally had some troubles with CWM on this phone and just use Odin now. I head TWRP works better than CWM on the Note 2, but Odin is the Tool Samsung suggests. Note that TWRP is MUCH more feature-rich than Odin. You might choose TWRP (or CWM) if you wanted to flash stuff from your SD card rather than from your PC- good for jumping around between kernels on the fly, for example.
Odin and the other two are all ways to flash stuff to your phone. That's all Odin does; the other two have lots more features.

Heck yeah! Simplest way is to root it and uninstall everything you don't like (Root App Delete from the Play Store seems to work pretty well; be sure you have a backup before you start blowing stuff away).
If you'd like to take it a step further, get a custom ROM that's been debloated; they normally require a full wipe, so bye bye sprint stuff. (Again, root it and back it up first!)

I appreciate you taking the time to go through all that, but I think maybe I didn't explain too well what I was trying to get. I wasn't asking for the general info, just things specific to CDMA and the L900. Like what was replying about. Not trying to be a jerk, but I know there's already a thousand threads on recoverys, ROMs, and rooting. Just didn't wanna do anything to my phone that would be irreversible (i.e. The resetting Google Wallet thing) or something that would cause signal issues (I read stuff on flashing certain ROMs on certain modems may create issues). Stuff like that. Like I said though appreciate the time you took, and any info you may have like that would certainly be appreciated.

Oh I forgot. If you are on ljc expect to not go back to it if you update to ma7. For some reason lots of people have had trouble going back. It would cause slot of problems. Ma7 is just fine for me though. Great battery life and what not. I would say do the update. If you are going custom rom and are currently unrooted just do the ota. Or there is a firmware file around here to flash. I updated firmware before going to ma7. Although I was already rooted using exynos abuse. Ma7 eliminates the exploit. So be prepared to do that before going to ma7. If there is anything I am missing that you still need answers to or don't understand just ask. Its also a good habit to update profile and prl when switching roms or modems.

I picked up something along those lines from reading around. It took all of 15 minutes out of the box before I got all rooted with new ROMs being flashed after playing around on stock just to get a baseline with all the ROM hoping that was sure to follow. Needless to say I didn't read up on anything modem wise before doing all this as I, admittedly, jumped the gun a little (I was just so excited to have a whole new community with new dev teams and all these foreign ROMs to explore). I used Max's trusty galaxynote2root site to root (love that guy). And used the GalaxyNote2RootSprint.zip to obtain root. Then, went straight into the original development section and immediately flashed the absolutely amazing Liquid Smooth. Now I should say, I did receive a message saying the was an update to the phone through sprint and I did proceed with the OTA while dling the zip and giving root instructions a quick once over. So, I'm guessing that took care of going to ma7 for me? Cuz I'm definitely using the ma7 modem. Now I did leave my beloved aosp as I did want to see if I would actually use all the S pen features that aosp sadly doesn't offer us. I jumped around from Whapasaurous to Venom Ice a d finally to Macks All Star, but I'm assuming that unless it's totally different from GSM that flashing a new ROM has no effect on your modem (but by all means correct me if I'm wrong). So just wanna make sure I went about things the right way here.
P. S. I did use the zip to revert the sd cards file format when returning from aosp so I didn't have to deal with all that "0" and "legacy" nonsense.
Thanks again!

Sounds more like a ROM issue to me though, but as it seems like it may pertain I figured I'd bring it up

I think you should have stayed with Tmobile and there 70 dollar unlimited because in a few months to a year you would have had lte and hspa+42 &21 as a fall back before you went to slow data. I really only made the move due to the fact that T-mobile is the only service provider that gets absolutely no coverage inside my work, and, unfortunately, I work 12 hour days, 4-5 days a week. So, being as my contract was up, I didn't wanna sign up for 2 more years with lte "coming soon." I know you all with Sprint know how that has the possibility of turning out. Plus, just because they were getting lte doesn't mean I'm going to see any improvement at work. Now I'm getting consistent 3g inside work and I'm loving it. Actually typing this inside, infamously, the worst service area in the entire building and still getting an almost constant connection. Occasionally I am getting 4g, not often, but it's happened. Playing around with modems tonight though. Did end up trying LJC after being on MA7,no problems so far, actually seeing improvement. Thanks for the heads up on the Sprint Connection Optimizer, gonna check that out now. Super annoying, especially as I do work 12 hour shifts and with wifi turning randomly on, don't wanna look to see my battery down to nada. That's just the kinda info I was hoping to get here, thanks again!

Yeah the wifi thing Will kill your battery. Sprint is not as bad as everyone thinks and says I have great LTE in 90% of where I go. I'm thinking of going to T-Mobile because I'm sick of cdma devices we are always are considered last ro none over GSM. If sprint keeps up the good work with the LtE and 3g ill be saying. Glad you hot it figured out for rh the most part.

[Q] How does Verizon benefit from locking the phone?

Hey guys,
Just got my One and I love it, but I was hoping for an AOSP release. Due to some hurdles regarding keeping my unlimited data (long story short, my university has a corporate contract with Verizon that lets me keep unlimited data and get new phones, so I pay them) I missed the day 1 release.
I know we don't have an unlocked bootloader or S-Off, and while I know my way around a command line, I'm far from the talent that will eventually crack the bootloader open.
So my question is, why does Verizon lock the phone in the first place? There's a number of people in these forums who keep saying "Verizon sucks, I'm leaving" over the issue, and while I know XDA Users are >5% of the total ownership, how does Verizon benefit from keeping us out of our phones? We had the day 0 unlock, so it's not like HTC is against it.
Thoughts? I'm curious as to know the motivation behind hindering open development.
This has always concerned me as well. I know tethering is probably a big deal, as well as removing bloat, but besides that I think they just want to be in control over the software. Part of this makes sense but pushing software updates that can brick an already rooted device is a little overkill.

Well one simple answer is for warranty issue purposes... You have quiet a few people who don't know what they are doing when unlocking their devices whether it be s-off or just unlock in general and can have a bad flash depending on the process rendering the phone unusable (aka bricked) at that point the users first thought is "well I'm just going to go to Verizon and tell them my phone is borked and get a free one" .....
It's a terrible thing to do because you are basically stealing from the company that is providing you for your own error/negligence.
Another for a lot of users is free tethering apps that require root privileges where as Verizon wants you to use their own tethering app where they can monitor the use and charge you for the data usage as well..
Their is a number of different reasons they do it and it's all BS because quite frankly we are paying good money for these things and should have every right to do what we please with them!

It cuts down on warranty fraud, service frauds (wifi tether etc), and potential network abuses.
Locked bootlaoders/secure phones are also a must for the business class customer, which they cater to

This is also what I believe the reason is as well.
I like talking about rooting/modding on social media with other involved Android users. But there's also the people that have an Android and see us talking about the benefits then asking if we can root their phone for them. My usual reply is that if you can't figure out how to do it yourself, you shouldn't be messing with your phone's file system.
Many of these people are the kind that would try to exploit the warranty if they screwed up their own phone. I personally know a few that have tried and failed rooting their phone but got a replacement from VZW.
Every device they have to give out due to failed rooting is a device they could have made $200+contract on.
I mean realistically if you think about it HTC basically gave us the go ahead with htcdev it's Verizon that is being the pain in the you know what. If they really wanted to be tool bags then let us do what we please as using the htcdev site we are already agreeing that we understand the consequences of agreeing to unlocking the device and for those that decide to do so should not be granted support for our device if anything goes wrong... That's how I feel!
It would be kind of nice if we could sign something with Verizon basically waiving any right to any kind of warranty replacement if they would allow is to unlock. I'd sign it. I'm always careful about what I flash so I would happily agree. I never thought about the tethering thing though.
Sent from my HTC One
I agree with the last two posts. We already agreed to void our warranty by using htcdev in the first place. I can halfway understand the tethering. They already keep track of the data we use. I pay for 4 gigs, I should be able to use it via tethering if I want to.

For one, they want you to fall prey to the pre-installed bloat. But also because it costs them money if you have to keep using their customer service resources to figure out problems concerning your phone that it was never meant to do in the first place. They don't want to pay someone to be on the phone with a guy who hacked his device into oblivion unnecessarily. The costs of warranties is in addition to that. It does make business sense, as much as it irks the rest of us. And boy does it irk us... I planned to debloat my device the hour I got it but missed the HTCDev window by 12 hours thanks to a f**k up at my local retail store.

This is basically what the HTCDev.com unlock entailed. You agree to voiding your warranty upon unlocking the device. I'm totally cool with this and it's why I proceed with caution and carry insurance.
As far as tethering and security, these concerns exist with devices that are solely rooted and it seems root exploits are frequently found in even the most "secure" devices. Do locked bootloaders stand in the way of root? From what I've seen the answer seems to be no. That said, how does locking the bootloader make the phone that much more "secure" for the corporate clientele?

Actually on HTC's, locked bootloader does prevent root exploits (not the exploit themselves, but maintaining root after the initial attack on the device) by having write protection as well as a write lock on the device from the bootloader as well (write protection is from the kernel)

Well, in the case of most HTC devices, and unlocked bootloader does stand in the way of permanent root. Nothing you change holds through a reboot. I don't know for sure if it stop you from tethering.
It doesn't stop you from tethering, just makes it a bit harder. FoxFi is a good example, I'm locked yet foxfi still allows me to tether and set up a hotspot. I think PDAnet also works for USB tethering but not totally sure on that one.

Ah, good to know. Thanks, I didn't realize this though now that you mention it, it does remind me of the EVO3D days when we were having trouble maintaining root through a reboot.
Its all tethering or hotspot you can cancell your home internet and just use lte

maybe if your home internet consists of one device, but LTE is too variable to be a viable home internet solution for me. I'll keep my cable 50 connection (hopefully upping to 100 in the next year).
as far as the tethering goes I"m not so certain that's the issue if you think about it AT&T and Verizon offer free tethering via their carrier apps so no point in making that an issue also to add to that you are given a set limit on how much data you use (I.E 2GB,4GB,6GB, & Etc) not like in Sprint's case where they offer you "Unlimited Data" (Albeit at a slower speed) still gives you the opportunity to abuse it. So as i see it they are two different cases so it shouldn't make a difference whether you use their app or a third party app.and going with what every one else has stated if we are going thru the TRUE manufacturer of the phone and they are allowing us a viable option to get what we seek with their disclaimers included then why block us out from getting what we require and what we paid for ?

what are you talking about? He has unlimited data as do alot of us. Verizon required those on unlimited data to pay 30 a month for tethering.
It's all to force you to pay more.
They killed the FM radio so that you have to use more data and run over your cap (if you're in that sad lot with limited data). And they block bootleg hotspots so that you have to pay for that too. Etc, etc.
If we can root, we can have devices that are as good and cheap to use as the ones on the other carriers, and that's not allowed.
