Anyone else having problems with "unlimited" data on TMO network?? - T-Mobile, Samsung Galaxy SIII

So within 1st 3 days of upgrading to my awesome SGS3 on T-MO, I noticed that anything data related was down to an absolute crawl. Turns out I was streaming all my Amazon music ONLINE and that sucked up my entire month's allowed bandwidth and so was stuck on <56k speeds until my cycle renewed TWO WEEKS later. So I somehow made do without any data until then.
So fast forward 2 weeks later, and I'm throttled ALREADY!! Anyone have any tips/advice on how to keep my data usage lower? I know I can use wifi whenever possible, but even doing so I'm already capped at my data limit before I'm throttled by like 99%. Alternatively, is there any way to increase the "unlimited" cap before I get throttled? I just upgraded my contract and don't want to deal with the ETF/changing carriers.
Any help would be much appreciated... thank you!!

Well on ICS you can monitor and set your own data limits. Another thing you might want to look into is not using amazon music. I know this sounds dumb but if it's causing you to use up so much data use something else. I stream Pandora all month long and never get throttled. I have the 5GB data plan. Oh and since I work for tmobile you should probably call in about this issue so they can compare your actual usage to the networks to make sure it isn't something they might have to fix. Rarely happens but I have seen this at least a few times. All you can do is increase your data plan. and set your limits through ics. or dial #web# and it will display your usage. or go to tmobile.com under usage you can see it here as well.

How much data are you allowed before you are throttled? You might try downloading your audio directly to your device with a wifi connection. You might also try Google Music, which caches lots of what it streams.
There are many data usage tracking apps, but I prefer LBE security in the market. Give it a try.

Thanks for the responses!
To follow up - yes I have since moved all my Amazon mp3s directly onto my phone, so that's no longer a problem. And prior to the S3, I had the MyTouch 4G, which, while not a spectacular phone, did everything I needed. My amazement with the S3 is that, beyond the first few days of accidentally streaming all my usage away with the Amazon mp3s (which was decidedly dumb of me), my data usage habits haven't changed all that much since my older phone. So I was completely blindsided this month when I already hit my data limit.
I'll need to dig into this a bit more with T-MO, but I was asking in the forum to see if anyone knew of any background app or program, or anything specific to the GS3 that would be using a steady stream of data without my knowledge? Again, thanks in advance for your help!

It's 2GB.
So after crying to TMO for a while, they told me they could up my limit but I would have to renew again and (of course!) increase my monthly bill which is already ghastly! I guess from the lack of many responses or even any other threads with similar experiences, it probably isn't some hidden data sucker upper program that's the problem here... just me being careless with my data usage... =(

Did you by chance use an upgrade for this phone? If your answer is yes, I might have some insight on this.

You should take a look under Data Usage in your settings to see what apps are using the most data. YouTube tends to be one of the bigger ones if you're on it more than once in a while. Or maybe you have an app that's constantly backing up apps.. That takes a lot of data too. Look around and check their usage.

Turn of syncing, Contacts, Picasa, Mail etc, Check them Manually
Install Opera Mini, uses up to 90% Less data than normal browser BUT loads websites slower
Using Youtube? Turn HQ off, but on this screen the quality will kill you.

Tmo has been very understanding when my family or I have made similar mistakes. My son went wild downloading games with monthly subscriptions and Tmo made it all go away. Be nice/professional and ask for a manager or the next in command if you are not able to rectify the issue. Being a 10+ year Tmo guy they treat me well. Learn to work the system and stay cool. Sometimes it takes multiple calls to find the right person that is willing to help.

Watch out for Google+ and instant upload along with dropbox too. All 3 will instant upload unless you change the settings

Also see what apps or accounts are set to auto sync and you could limit background processes as I on my s3 staying logged on eBay for instant notifications, having gmail and other apps set to auto sync and too many background processes was costing me 10 to 12 Mega bytes a day times that by 30 days and that's like 300 to360 megabytes a months wasted you can always check your e-mail and stuff manually unless your a business man and relied on heavy notifications this will help you save a lot of data it keeps me safe because I have the five GB plan too and I've went over a lot until I dug into my settings, hope this helps.

Awesome, thanks everyone for your suggestions! I totally forgot about all the background apps/processes that auto-sync... definitely has helped some. Still isn't 100% better, but like someone else suggested earlier, I was able to talk my way through with a helpful rep. I am also a longtime customer, and they seemed to want to work with me, as opposed to giving me the shaft.

Yes, I did an upgrade through Wal-Mart the week it was launched in the US.

Same thing happened to me. I just restarted a cycle.... But the cycle before this one... Some app used nearly a GB of data around 5 in the morning 3 days into the cycle. By the time I realized this and called TMobile... I was up into the 3.6 range... Couldn't track down the app because I was rom jumping. Anyway, TMobile wasn't much help... I thought for sure they would reset my data since they can see my usage history, but no dice. Bastards! :cyclops:

Ouch!! Yeah, I was hoping to have some sort of definitive answer like you did (1 unknown app hogging all the data at some random time) but I really didn't have anything to pin-point the problem. Were you able to remove/disable that app from doing that?

How about you post what apps you have installed and we can all compare and see if anyone else has the same problem with some of the same apps. Just a thought to maybe help you out. Im just bored shopping with the gf lol.

If you're still hitting your cap in the next few months you might consider a 5GB plan. It'll give you quite a bit more data to work with and you can tether with T-Mobile's blessing.

Does Frequent ROM Flashing Cause Inaccurate Usage Reporting??

I got the oddest bill from AT&T the other day with usage totals that were impossible. Has anyone experienced this and/or is there a possibility that it might have something to do with frequent flashing of different ROM's and Radios??
Data usage I assume? Wouldn't think any more than normal, except maybe some initial setup stuff like downloading email. Can use this to monitor what's using data if you're concerned.

No I mean like does messaging and the like which can be stored on the SIM, get reported a second time. AT&T forces you to have an unlimited data plan with the Tilt2 so no worries there. I just got a bill with something like 700 texts used in 2 days. Something I assure you I would have remembered doing. Hell, I wouldn't have been able to do much else.

Wow...I've been with AT&T for years, and do my fair share of texting and flashing. Can't say I remember getting a bill with that many messages reported. I don't even think any roms I've used default to save to the SIM, even though the capability exists.
The only time I've seen this is when I've been in very poor coverage areas (ie, my basement heh). I'll send a text from the basement, then go upstairs and get 8 or 9 responses (if it's an automated system). If you've got poor reception I'd recommend trying a different radio...but I doubt poor reception would cause that many repeats. Not sure man.

my guess would be just something screwed up in the ATT system. Check the rest of your bill and make sure everything else is in order and check your bills for the next few months.. ALSO check your last bill as they have a rule that after 1 month they wont fix it [although they will if you really push like I've had to ]
Thanks for all of the sage advice. AT&T sucks in so many ways but the one thing you can say is that if you *****, whine, cry etc. at them enough they will wipe some errant charges. I think alot of these are as Toleraen suggests, nothing more than duplicates. We shall see and I will post any and all results of my efforts to get to the bottom of this.
Thanks again

Word of Warning

So recently i went to Japan for a 3 week holiday. It was good blah blah blah
I decided to take my desire as it would be useful to use when wifi was availabe
However, on many occasions, mostly when drunk....I decided ''**** it, i'll turn off airplane mode and check my e-mails'' I did it more than a few times, but not enough to worry about my bill
So today, i got my phone disconnected by t-mobile. This promted me to immediately call them and ask what's up. They said my account was disconnected by the fraud department as my account seemed different from usua. I told them that i'd been in Japan so maybe it was just because i was now back in uk, the bells started ringing and that nothing was wrong and they should reconnect my line.
I asked how much my bill was
£580!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! omg!!! apparently i racked up £400 just through data usage!!!! and the rest in calls
I knew it was £7.50 for 1mb but i didn't realise that checking my e-mails now and then would rack up such an amount
so word of warning....next time you visit somewhere outside your home country....either leave your phone at home, or don't use data or even answer the phone
The worst part was i had to pay them there and now just to get my line reconnected.
second word of warning, always have a spare bit of cash in your bank for a rainy day/extremely expensive phone bills
it makes you wonder what the Desire does when it connects.
ps
I still don't believe anyone that says they got more than 12 hours of battery with normal usage. I seriously need to keep everything to a basic minimum to get a day out of it. but if i use it just normally...then yeah...12 hours is optimistic
ouuuuch!! thats my input to this thread.
You sure you didn't go on porn while you were drunk also?
Uuuuuu!!!! That really sucks!!! Something similar happened to me once when i went to Cuba but it wasn't as terrible as yours, the again, my phone didn't have data back then!!!
ps; i can get 3 days of batt on normal use (includes gmail on push, ocasional word on g-talk, couple of messages a day, couple of calls a day and 10 mins of browsing a day and the ocasional game) and if i happen to push the phone a bit more i still get 2 days easily so there must be something sucking your battery dry!!!!
Just as an example, i havn't used the phone much these days and i'm on my fouth day and i'm pretty sure it'll reach tonights charge no problem.

That only works out at 17mb data per week ( £400 / £7.5 / 3 ) which is actually a pretty small amount of data. I'd expect my phone to burn through that in less than a day for my email usage.
If you really want to know how much data your Desire chews through, install a net counter, but of course in your particular case it's rather closing the stable door after the horse has bolted!
Regards,
Dave
I think T-Mobile has ripped you off. When I was also in japan, I was using data including gps but my bill was nowhere near yours. I am on Vodafone.

Ouch, that bill hurt. But s**t happens. You should not have to go into airplane mode by the way: There is a checkbox that enables data connections while roaming, just keep it unchecked.
Anyway, about your battery: you should check your partial wake usage. I had trouble with the battery on my desire, until a recent OTA update to 1.20.207.3. Everything seems to be fine ever since then.
You can check your partial wake usage by:
- dialing »*#*#4636#*#*«,
- then going to »Battery history«,
- with dropdowns at »Other usage«
- and »since last unplugged«.
Look at »Running«. This shows useful data, especially if you have been on battery for some time – like 30min – with your phone in stand-by. Some application/service may be blocking the sleep state of the device. Then you will notice »running« at 100% or at least very high – even though the phone was supposed to be in sleep state.
Also search the forums for »potential cause for excessive battery usage«. Since I am a noob here, I cannot post the link, so please use search...

Yeah, every time you come out of Airplane mode (to make a call or whatever) your phone will try and sync because it knows it's been "out of the loop".
Just keep data roaming off or delete the APNs.

Ahem! Vodafone used to have a "reasonably sensible" (and I use that term loosely) data roaming package - you should see Vodafones new data roaming tariffs that come into effect in June!

P.S. GPS in and of itself doesn't use any data, though certain apps that use GPS may consume data themselves. For example. Google Navigation will use data to pull down maps, whereas Copilot uses maps on SD card and thus consumes no data.
yea it does suck especially since i'm planning on going back to japan for 5 weeks in July. Lol, wont be checking my e-mail half as much.
How do i know if there's an update to my rom? I use the phone to check if there are updates but it always says it's fine. Should i actually check online instead? I know with Winmob it never said there was an update even when there was. I'm kind of hoping android is a bit better for that.
I'll check which rom etc i'm using and see if there's an update.
Ive got a netcounter. However i use task killer a lot because i'm convinced it saves the battery a little. So if i use that, obivously it kills the net counter too.
I'm sure someone is about to say ''you're using android, you don't need a task killer'' however, when i see so many apps running in the background, regardless if people say ''but they're not using memory'', they do. If i kill them all, my phone goes quicker again. So yea it does work.

Most task killers have an option to exclude certain apps, so if you must insist on using one ( ), set it to ignore your net counter.

That just means your operator is not offering an update. You may wish to check out the battery history, it may give you some information about what is draining your battery.

Well, Android is designed to use all the RAM available, which is a good thing - speaking of software design. There is no reason to keep RAM free on a well designed operating system, because once RAM is required, an unused app is ditched in favour of the new one. As this takes virtually no time there is no need to use time and resources to clean up. In fact, task killers use system resources, resulting in battery usage.
Anyway, what you are seeing is bad design in applications, and that is real: Some apps are active, even though they should not be. Either because you do not want them to, or because they do not properly communicate that they will be running in the background, doing stuff all the time. Android adresses the issue by exposing details about battery usage to the user, thus forcing bad developers to choose the defaults for their apps more carefully.
Again, check out *#*#4636#*#* to identify software that is running all the time. Maybe it's something you do not need that is causing your phone to lag and drain the battery...
Can't you tell t-mobile to disable internet usage on your account when your in another country?

3 ftw ... pay them 15£ and all ur inclusive allowances work abroad
i know what you mean but...
I went on honeymoon to Italy for 10 days with my wife and my desire.
I am with Vodafone and was charged 5 pounds a day for data. They allow 25mbps for a fiver which I think is reasonable. However my.bill breakdown of data usage was shot to sh*t ...some days showed 24mb others 100+, all I was doing was this website, the BBC, and a beekeeper one. I complained, they checked the bill and gave me 35 quid back. Also another 30 off next months bill too.
Overall my 10 days cost me 50 quid.
Sam
This is why when abroad always always get a local sim card if you need calls to come in divert your number its soooo much cheaper.

sage words.
sounds like the OP has the desires full suite of syncing going on.
With my old HD I got lost in europe and fired up google maps, it was set to satellite mode and it cost me 5 quid just to find out where I was and that was about 30 seconds usage.
There is a 'data off' app out there. It just kills all data connections until further notice.

[Q] Android data usage warning

So lately I've been using a lot of data (so far up to 2GB with a week left until my billing cycle ends) and gotten up to 200MB just today alone. I went to open my browser and expected Google to pop up but instead a page pulled up warning me that I was using an unusual amout of data and I needed to input the following characters on the page to make sure I wasn't a bot. I'm curious if anyone has ever encountered a situation like this before and if it is a cause for concern. I mean I do have Verizon's unlimited data plan. I will admit this is the first time I've gotten to 2GB within a month but I have gotten fairly close before (1.6GB). The ROM I'm currently using is MIUI 12.31.

Wow, that's a lot. He or she did get any type of warning from the phone? It wasn't really Verizon letting me know they suspect unusually high data usage it was more like Google was telling me that. By the way, is Verizon's unlimited data actually unlimited or is there some kind of invisible cap?

I've actually gotten that on my pc before. I believe its due to the fact that my home page is Google and every time I open a new browser window or tab, it goes to Google.
**** em, we signed up for unlimited data and we'll get it. If they change their data plan like AT&T we'll be grandfathered in with unlimited data like people with at&t's original data plan. Their only other option is 150mb for $15, **** that.

I don't think verizon enforces any limit, but I did read that they start throttling back your communication speed after a certain point. 4gb I think. There's a thread in the dev forum about a hack to disable the speed cut back.

From what I remember from last month, at least in the last two weeks, I've had average data speeds of 30 to 100Kbps down. This is in an area where I could previously get 100Kbps down without a problem, often reaching to 1700Kbps. For the last week I have accepted this speed which is impossible to really download anything or even open images. I thought that since I had about 14GB if data usage last month that I had just been getting throttled. My new billing cycle started today and my speeds are still complete crap. What gives? Any ideas? I already re flashed my ROM and radio version to no benefit.

this doesnt sound like data throttling. What rom are you running? and if your running stock, it might be hardware related. I would say that your service just sucks in your area, but if calls dont get through even on wifi, its not the service
And even if it was data throttling, if tmobile wants to throttle your data, they are going to do it, and theres no way to bypass that. If there was a way no one would be on the unlimited plan, and it wouldnt be discussed here on xda, because that would be fraud

i stand corrected
doesnt change the fact that it doesnt sound like data throttling though
also, i didnt think that bypassing data throttles would be so easy
That's for the S3 though, hard telling if it would work on the S4

ill try it myself later today, its 4 in the morn here and i dont have the energy to do it lol
So long as you are on T-Mobile's network, it is IMPOSSIBLE to bypass the throttling. All the hits you are getting, were for older phones and older networks. T-Mobile has gotten smart since then. All throttling is done via their servers and NOT the phone. All data counting is done on their end. Not the phone. So its impossible to bypass it. Your best bet is to go with unlimited plan if you use that much data. I love my unlimited plan.

I totally agree. I actually started a note yesterday to the mods asking about this very thing. Why do the rules here speak about not posting warez or about stealing developers software here but it is ok to discuss how to steal things that the providers charge for? People ask straight out...."How can I steal".....and thats OK? If you try to bypass things that are normally charged for , like unlock codes, throttleing bypass, or tethering without paying, it is, IMHO stealing.
OK let the bashing begin

When I pay $629.99 for something, I'll do precisely what I want with it. I could apply your own logic and tell you that you shouldn't root your phone or install custom ROMs, but without that, what would XDA be? Food for thought.
Edit: Sorry, the bit about unlocking rubbed me the wrong way, but to be fair, I will say that I think attempting to bypass the throttling is too far over the line. Tethering.... that's another story. You pay for your data, use it how you want.

I highly agree with your edit
However, anyone can try as hard as they like to bypass the throttling, its no longer done on the phone itself. Its done on T-Mobiles end. The hack posted in that thread doesnt even work. If you look at the system services running when being throttled, there is not a single service labled "Throttle Service" plus if it were software related, CM ROMs shouldnt throttle but they do. It is all server based throttling now based off your cell phone number and IMEI (T-Mobile's way of detecting who you are )
New Info!
Although this thread is old as dirt, I came across it because no one is really talking about this anymore as it appears to be Impossible to Bypass the T-mo Throttle....
But I have Positive Confirmation as I'm cooking at about 300KB/s Right now!!!!
Not sure why but I have a Sitemap Generator that when it creates a Sitemap it runs at full speed, and Also my Windows 7 Updates run at full speed!!!
Here's the situation and Maybe someone else can confirm with a Like setup, My GSR2 (I-727) Blew Up, So I had to go back to a REAL OLD P506, running 2.2 or 2.4 some crap like that, I'm using Paid FoxFi with USB Connect and Tether Block 1, Which I'm not even supposed to be doing!!! as I'm Off my 2.5Gigs of 4g, Which this phone only goes 3g/Edge anyhow...
Here's a Screen Shot of my Data Speed... Meant to post on this Months ago when I switched to T-mo, but never got to it...
Reason I'm Posting now, Is because I think this Needs to be Revisited, as Apparently it IS POSSIBLE!
Mike
P.S. Regular Transfers/Downloads/Webpages Etc, Run about 15-20KB/s
