Convince me to root!

So far I have zero complaints about this phone, there are some ui things I would like fixed, and I know can be fixed via rooting, but they just don't seem to be enough to push me over the edge. I have files downloaded and ready to go, but just can't seem to take the plunge. I thought I had my first los today, but the phone recovered as soon as I was back in signal(if it hadn't that would have done it).
So why should I root?

You can always revert back to the stock kernel if you have an issue (or have them that frequently that you can't stand it). Anybody who thinks that once you root there is no way to go back is an idiot. "lol, I got no LOS then I rooted and even though I put stock kernel back its all [email protected] lol" not true.
I got 2 LOS in the first week stock...rooted...got a bit more than usual, but nothing crazy. Flashed stock kernel back, still rooted, didn't have another for a few weeks until I flashed a new kernel...flashed back, have had none...etc etc etc, YMMV, but, umm, I don't think you have anything to be afraid of. Just know what you are doing...don't just flash stuff and figure it out later. Know why you want something and how to 'put it back'...also having/making a USB jig would be a good idea, but not necessary.
You can get them for like $3 on amazon or build one with a microUSB cable and $1 worth of stuff from radioshack.
I don't know about you but I certainly didn't get this phone to NOT mod it.

I didn't get the phone to keep it stock, not really worried about los, it recovers after flying for 2 hours with no signal, rooting shouldn't make much difference., planning on using viperom and lostkernel.
Maybe tomorrow I will root

The only thing I can tell you is that read the directions and understand ODIN for all of the ODIN stuff you do. That is one of the ways you can brick the fnck out of this phone...not paying attention in ODIN. Don't write a partition if you are not told to...and try to only use it to flash a kernel+CWM and flash everything else from CWM if and when possible.
If you aren't worried about LOS (and it is real and under the right circumstances it'll effect every phone...reboot...no big deal...if it is flash a pulled stock kernel) then go for it.
I haven't tried ViperROM on this phone yet, but, I can tell you from my time with the E3D that kid knows what he's doin'....I'm sure this ROM is no different and I've heard nothing but great things about the LoST kernel.

If you don't want to root, don't. Why would anyone want to pressure you?

I don't understand why some people view this almost like losing their virginity, trying a drug or robbing a liquor store. It's a very well understood technical process with very specific pros and cons that are also very well understood.

Yep. First android phone for me, and I bought it with the full intention of making it MY phone. After all, they are basically an additional limb for most people, no? (I'd say if you're registered with xda that is most likely the case! ) So you might as well go balls to the walls, right? If you're not into that kind of thing, then keep it stock! This phone is AMAZING just sitting at the home screen...it looks awesome! It is a great piece of technology, with plenty of great features and capability, and will serve you very well whether its rooted or not. Good luck with whatever you do!

I broke down and did it yesterday when someone said viper ROM solved his app freezing due to using a ton of CPU usage bug. So far, so good.

OP if you are on EG30 baseband could you extract the modem.bin file for us so we could test it?

I would just stay stock. Honestly, no offense to the developers, but there is just nothing substantial out there. If you want a couple of different themes, you could consider rooting, but other than that every ROM I have flashed provided close to nothing really.
I mean, what? Battery percentage mod? Removed CIQ? "Speed" tweaks? A reboot option?
Nothing made this phone faster or more efficient than stock touchWiz. There is no real difference except that people like to flash, so they would flash anything.

I gotta say i miss root, I was finicky on rooting my epic 4g ad once I did, oooh lord I never looked back , of course I've stumbled into troubles but following directions, I got back on track and learned a few this gs along the way, now what's stopping me on rooting the ET4G is not having the actual way to go back to full true stock,like we were able to do on the epic 4g with using Odin, giving you a factory full stock phone , or any older device, since we don't have true stock roms and kernels, unless I'm wrong g of course and I've been missing out! If so direct me!

We have stock roms to ODIN, but it's not factory stock. We have the factory stock kernel that was pulled from a stock phone. What we lack is an OEM RUU to make it 100%-in-every-way-stock.
That said, I have trashed my 4G and wifi somehow on multiple occasions due to rampant recklessness on my part. I just factory-wiped (apparently...I don't remember that part but I must have) and flashed the ODIN rooted stock (with stock kernel) and it fixes everything every time.

So then you recommend rooting this early?

i rooted so i could have wifi tethering and control over CPU speeds (via setcpu) in addition, there's some neat functionality that starburst ROM allows:
- better lock screens
- motion controlled silencing of phone
- battery % viewing
some people care about the speed tweaks (i haven't noticed any speed increase) and ciq (i don't really care for this), but there are several reasons to root. that being said, if you don't need the additional functionality of the phone, then preserve your phone's warranty!

Yea I'd say stay stock in terms of the ROM and kernel, but hell yea why not root? Right now I'm running stock kernel with CWM (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099) and the stock ROM with root and busybox (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415) and I love it. I was running Midnight ROM but I went back to stock to see if that helped the LoS issues at all. If you're like me and really just want control over the hotspot feature and CPU underclocking (things of that nature) then def go stock rooted fo shoski.

[Q] Having Signal Issues with UK GSM Galaxy Nexus on TMO Network

I've been reading this forum for the past two days trying to see if there is a similar thread with this issue. Please point me in the right direction if there is a similar thread resolving this issue (this forum is colossal!).
I recently bought a UK version GSM Galaxy Nexus running Modaco 4.0.2 Ir8. I'm using it on T-Mobile's network (The GN is replacing my HTC Sensation).
The gentleman that sold it to me had already unlocked, rooted, and flashed it with Modaco. It works blazing fast. The only thing is that when ever I make a phone call it literally drops in less than 5 minutes. The signal seems to be switching like crazy from 3G to HSPA+ as well.
I've called TMO and they have no clue what the issue is (4 different reps told me 4 different things from needing to factory reset to the towers being down etc.).
Again the phone works great besides the fact that I can't make a phone call for more than a couple of minutes before it drops.
Has anyone seen this with their GN? Is it the phone? The Mod? Are T-Mobile's towers not able to pick up this phone's radios because it's from the UK?
How can I go about fixing this (Factory reset? etc.)? I'm literally about to factory reset this thing this morning when I get home from work.
I don't really have too much experience as far as rooting goes but willing to learn and get this issue resolved.

What radio version are you using?
I'm on T-Mobile and xxkk6 works well for me.
If you don't know what you have, I suggest u go to the dev section and start reading for a while

xxkk6 at the least should be on there. i think there is xxkl7 possibly. the xxkk6 is the stock radio, but if there is a kk7 or kl7 might want to try that as it would be a later version.

How can I tell which radio version I'm on and does it give me the option to switch it?

I had similar problems until I switched to KK6.

I was using KK1 before and it was absolutely fine until about a week ago, then I started to get dropped calls etc.

I'm on xxk1. How do I switch to kk6?

Thanks for sending me that link. Which baseband set up would be good for the US (NYC specifically). They all look like they are designed for European areas.
And once I put in my Sim card, why didn't the phone just figure out with Radioband to attach itself to?

Basebands beginning with UG are for north America. I think there are a couple of threads in the dev section about UG basebands, it might be worth have a look at those.

the baseband should work. it's gsm, the world standard. but i'm guessing since i don't know exactly what is tweaked, but that the specific baseband for your region will bias your phone for the known networks. ugkk7 works great for me. atnt. i think there is a ugkl6 or 7. sometimes you have to test them. some will work better for others. some will work great and not eat battery. if it eats battery, try another one. i think samsung is decent about releasing different radios for different regions. it can be confusing. now when it's comes to updating their roms, that is a different story.

The baseband def has to be affecting my battery. I'm getting not even 10 hours on a full charge from moderate use.
I don't really know exactly what the first owner did to it, only what he told me.
My plan is to bring it back to factory settings (found an article about how to restore the GSM version, but have yet to find any youtube videos abou it....I only see LTE videos on rooting and unrooting, and I'm not sure if it's the same process so I'm not touching those).
If that doesn't help it then I'll go about flashing and changing the baseband.
Again this whole baseband business is really new to me. The input you guys have been giving so far is much appreciated.

Update:
Ended up coming home early from work and staying up all morning trying to figure this out. I decided on using this link first: (http://www.addictivetips.com/mobile/restore-galaxy-nexus-to-stock-how-to/)
to re-lock. That took about 4 hours of troubleshooting and getting to know the lingo and terminology. Then from a combination of other youtube videos I spent another 4 hours trying to figure out how to lock the bootloader. Believe it or not the Xda link about this (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1392310) saved me from losing my mind. I literally didn't go to sleep until I made sure I brought the phone back to factory settings.
After I finally got the phone back to factory settings (believe me, it wasn't fun figuring this out especially when I've never rooted before) I noticed the wifi wasn't working, or had a very weak signal. Content with the phone at least being back on factory settings and locked, I go to sleep and wake up today seeing the same issue with the wifi (mean while, I now have good signal/service...didn't even have to mess with the baseband radio config).
I restart the router in our house and power down the phone and restart. Problem fixed.
Not really sure why or how, but bringing the phone back to factory settings seems to make it work just as fast as it worked when Modaco Ir8 4.0.2 was on it. Except now I have amazing Service signal.
I can honestly state that rooting really isn't for me especially with the notion that with every new mod that comes out you have to be flashing on a constant basis. Even though I almost lost my mind trying to figure this out, I would still rather have this approach vs Apple's walled garden approach though. Any day.
One of the reasons I like the Nexus line of phones is that it's pretty much the only Android phone that gets all the updates first and on a constant basis. Which makes it such an awesome phone in that it's also the phone that Google allows any and all capabilities to be customized. I have true respect for all the devs out there who attack this stuff daily.
Just be sure to get enough exercise in and healthy meals along with rest lol.

Rooting/Flashing is great IMO for people who will never have the luxury of getting updates like Nexus phones get. Take control in your own hands on when you decide you want to update(s) etc.
I'm sure any Devs out there (like on this forum) also love tinkering. To each his own.

Indeed. I def learned a lesson: Never let anyone ever root your phone for you. The guy who rooted it for me was nice enough to say I could email him for questions but the more I kept emailing him the more I could tell he was probably getting frustrated at all my worrisome questions ("I'm dropping calls", "Is it because of the rooting?", "My wifi isn't working", "is it because of the rooting?..." etc.).
Just glad to know there are tons of available options for one to seek out help when issues like this arise.

Tmobile SGS3, no LTE, deal breaker?

So im ready to upgrade my phones on Tmobile and I read that the SGS 3 does not support LTE on Tmobiles network. Is this a deal breaker? Ive read that LTE is a battery vampire. Tmobile LTE network isnt due till next year. I plan on keeping the SGS 3 for 2 years, hoping it would be a bit of future proofing for me since its the hottest phone right now.

Nope... I'm getting 10-15 down on a rough day in greater Los Angeles area. You really need it faster? Think it's good enough to perform every day activities on the phone.

Yeah no way. I'm getting 20mps steady. That's stupid fast. Lte if available is quicker with better ping but the phone is excellent and Lte isn't needed with the new radios.

Not only this but our device supports 41mbps, which by the time LTE rolls out, will be in most cities if not already.
(I know we wont get 41mbps realistically)
I already get 25mbps in NYC which is faster than my home internet speed. Seriously LTE is overkill (literally) as it just kills your battery.

You should probably read before posting something that has been asked already.
The T999 has LTE bands already, they are just disabled by default.

I'm no expert, but not much of a life living in a new state, so I read A LOT! And most of that reading has been about computers and mobile phones. I've seen about a million opinions on this; seen a lot of speed tests and other tests comparing the 2, and absolutely every piece of factual evidence so far has shown me that the T-Mobile's HSPA+ network is absolutely comparable to LTE. There are only very slight insignificant differences in the tests - some a few degrees higher, some a few lower - according to the tester's location, device, and environment. But they always come extremely close to the same numbers. I've heard LTE does eat a lot of battery, but that's (as always) depending upon individual usage. The SGS III, from what I understand, is capable of supporting LTE, even on the T-Mo model, it's just not being used since they aren't on it, so if/when they do go LTE, your phone will support it. Until then, I think you'll be just as happy with their network. I hope that helps ya! At least I'd feel like I accomplished something with my endless hours lookin at all this crap! Good luck!

Thanks. I ended up going with the SGS 3. So far I like it a lot, its very fast. I am coming from a SGS Vibrant with Slim ICS ROM on it, so I had to install a launcher to get rid of TouchWiz (currently Im using Nova Launcher).

Oh cool! Me too, had the Vibrant and alternated between 2 ROMs at the end - ICS Passion and Doc's Master, they were both so great! Don't care for TouchWiz at all. I'm currently using Apex right now, it's simple, quick n user-friendly, and comes with the customizing I like - plus it has the capability of running themes from other home launchers, ie; GoLauncher, which I think is friggin awesome! Check it out if ya haven't already, there's not a whole lot it CAN'T do! Anyway, I think you'll LOVE this phone! I never in a million years thought I'd part ways with the Vibrant! I'm really stoked, now that I know how to do everything! If u have any questions, need help with dev stuff, or u just want recommendations, like I said - bored, not much of a life here, so helping is no problem at all! I've been through XDA quite extensively, so I know pretty much all there is to know about the 2 devices I have, just have the noob status still cuz I never post! So feel free to ask anytime! Thanks, I installed Apex last night. I might buy the Pro version if it becomes my fav. I was on the fence about waiting to get the HTC One X+ that is rumored to be released at the end of Sept. Since I have a track record with Samsung and its a very popular device (more support from devs), I decided to go with Samsung again. The only thing I really need right now is ROOT. I watched a video on Youtube and it looks like its a fairly simple process, not as easy as the Vibrant though. I mainly need ROOT to install Titanium Backup. I'm still confused though about the "flash counter" that some people mention and how Tmo/Samsung can see that you flashed your device if it were sent in for replacement/repair. Any ideas on that?

It's a counter that counts custom binaries, if serviced by Samsung they may check it and decline warranty. There is a no trip method in the development section that I highly recommend. Right now there is also an app anyways by guru ChainFire called triangle away, that resets the counter. Either way here's the link to the no trip method that is easy as pie for anyone. Enjoy !

Yeah, I bought the Apex Pro, and I don't normally buy many paid apps - I just really like how easy it is to integrate with other things like themes, which I mentioned earlier, and then other things too, ie; lockscreen apps, status bar apps, fonts, icons...so even if I want just one thing different that Apex doesn't have, I can still get that thing and use Apex at the same time!
Rooting!! OK here's what I did, and not a single problem! This is the fastest, easiest time I have ever had rooting and/or flashing by a MILE! I was leery due to the IMIE issues being reported and also, like you, the flash counter voiding the warranty. (if anything happened and I was out of an almost $700 phone, I'd be seriously PISSED!!) So if you do decide to root and/or flash, I would HIGHLY recommend doing these things! 1st, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1804123 and back up your IMEI. Just follow the instructions (super simple) to make a backup. I don't think u need to do a full NV backup (u'll understand what that means if u read thru the posts on this issue, but it doesn't matter) because you'll already have your IMEI backed up beforehand. I did it anyway tho, just because I felt safer that way. Up to you! Bookmark that thread tho, in case you ever encounter any IMEI or data probs cuz they're the go-to guys for that, and have all the RIGHT fixes! You'll see the other guy I'm referring to's method and a link to his thread referenced there, where there's a lot more background info, but the guy's thread I gave you the link for is WAY easier for performing the backup. As far as checking the backup to be sure it's there, that can get confusing - If you followed the directions, I promise it worked, just gets techie when trying to read phone stuff on a PC. All info on the subject is in those 2 threads, you'll see it! N E way, do that FIRST BEFORE ANYTHING!!
Next, go here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746682 and install this to your PC. This is the coolest thing ever to get you backed up, rooted, flashed, whatever. It's called the "Snapdragon Toolkit" I cannot begin to say enough about it! It does EVERYTHING you need - installs the correct drivers, roots, unroots, flashes ROMs, gives u ClockworkMod Recovery AND Odin, and also gives you a full perfect backup - Nandroid backup for CM, .tar file for ODIN - of your stock firmware to keep on your PC in case you run into an issue or just decide to go back to stock. Also provides a walk-thru for resetting the flash counter back to zero using an app called Triangle Away by Chainfire!! It gets u into download mode, roots, gives you Superuser, busybox, CWM, all necessary root stuff, and reboots your phone all automatically in just a quick click! You might have read secure vs insecure kernels - gives you the choice. Insecure leaves you rooted. You can also use it to just kind of temp-root to do something that like say, requires ADB (which requires you to be rooted to use) Do it thru the toolkit, and it will get you (for instance for adb access) the insecure kernel alone, temporarily, until you're done with your task. You can do each thing separately like that or everything all at once. His thread, as well as inside the toolkit itself, when you open it on your PC, gives you total kindergarten instructions and explanations for each thing it does. I have never seen a faster, simpler, more user-friendly program for getting these things done - and all in one place! So get that, and per the instructions, open it and install the drivers 1st before plugging in your phone with ur USB. You probably have the right drivers already, but just in case there are extra drivers there needed for the program or anything it does, I'd go ahead and install them. It'll then open a window that looks old DOS command-line like, and will ask which model you have. Every time you're making any choice in the program, you'll be typing your answer at the bottom of the screen and hitting "enter" to submit. Type the number 3, it's the one for T-Mo T999 UVALEM, and hit enter. It then displays the menu with the list of all the options. You can plug in to be sure the phone's detected, and check it by looking at the top of the window; it'll show it under "List of devices attached." If you do what I did, which was the all-at-once option, you'll hit the number 2 and enter for thr rooting options menu, then 3, enter to choose all-in-one and follow the on-screen instructions for when to plug in the phone and such.
To simplify things further, so you can save some time, I've got all the files you need already, to do your IMEI backup, stock firmware backup,(the Nandroid copy of the firmware and the .tar ODIN copy), the drivers, the most recent ClockworkMod Touch and ODIN files, the Toolkit, and all the .apk files of the apps that are safe to remove from the original firmware if you want that. I didn't remove all of these, for the same reason I haven't flashed AOKP or CM9/CM10 yet; I'm not sure I want to lose the new Samsung stuff like SVoice and the motion features. It's a list others comprised, actually probably really outdated, containing the ones confirmed safe to remove. I just kept in case I wanted any of 'em back! I can personally confirm all the T-Mobile ones, ChatOn, Flipboard, all the Yahoo stuff, self, factory and LCD tests, Samsung's Media Hub, Game Hub, SSuggest, and More Services, Google's Books, Music, TV/Movies, Talk, and Google+(Plus One), Amazon, Polaris Viewer, Facebook SMS, and the system Music and Video apps. I say probably outdated cuz I'm sure the Maps from Google and Samsung, the Cloud sync apps from them all, and the Email apps, for example, are all fine to go too, and probably verified by now. (I mean seriously, do I need Samsung, T-Mo, Google+, GMail, Dropbox, Sugarsync, AND Facebook ALL syncing my stuff?! JEEZUSS!!!) Anyway, all the files are in my dropbox here:

There's also a way to flash CWM Touch Recovery without having to pay for Rom Manager Premium and without tripping the flash counter in there with instructions if you want it, but you have to be ok with entering command line script with adb or a terminal emulator. I just used the Triangle Away app, worked perfect!

Sorry but I may be leaving the root community for good

I've suspected for a long time that custom ROMs have been the source of all my frustrations with the Gnex. I unlocked and rooted on the first day and even though there wasn't much in the way of custom Roms with 4.0 I was excited to try all the different mods that were slowly flooding XDA and RootzWiki.
This wasn't my 1st experience with root either. I owned the Dinc and loved the idea of tinkering with my device. I learned a lot. Mainly that you should ALWAYS MAKE A BACKUP. and take the extra minute to wipe everything. I don't even use TI backup anymore because I wanted to start over from scratch any time I flashed a new ROM.
I say this because I know there are ppl in the forums that are smarter than I when it comes to Android. There are also some of those same ppl that will assume that I made some sort of noob mistake and I should try "wiping data" or something. Trust me, I've tried that and it doesn't fix it.
My main issues have been:
*losing data connection for no reason and eventually having to reboot in order to restore data.
*Weak network/WiFi.
Now I know there is a thread on rootz that addresses the bars and how inaccurate they are. But when two identical devices sit down in the same place and run speed test. My Gnex can slow to a snails pace at times. The wierdest thing about this is that it only seems to do it sporadically, which makes recreating it almost impossible. Although it seems most frequent at work, but that maybe because I spend an ungodly amount of time at my office.
*Lag/freezes
I know its not gonna work perfectly all the time and sometimes you have to reboot your phone just to give it a chance to reset itself and that's cool but when you do that and it doesn't fix the sluggishness of the phone then I feel there is a problem.
* problems with certain system functions like Bluetooth or GPS
Now this may be only an issue with particular Roms which may be known to have problems with certain aspects of the system. For instance, it seems pretty common from what I've seen on the forums that GPS is an issue for some on 4.2. I was actually on 4.2 this morning until I went to punch in an address from a text msg to Navigation and it wouldn't lock on my location. I got frustrated and decided to wipe and install the AOKP milestone I had saved and when I set everything back up guess what? Navigation still wouldn't lock on. I ended up having to bail out on some guys because I could find there house. I got home and found a stock ROM online. I wiped, flashed and setup my phone for the second time today. I downloaded Maps and immediately went to find the address and it was insane how fast it locked on a location.
There are other issues but I'm becoming long winded so I'll try to wrap it up.
Now I'm not one to dismiss my own part in my problems. I've certainly tried to address them when/if they arise with what little knowledge I have and the ability to learn what I can. I e emailed devs amd talked to others and sometimes it helps, but sometimes like this morning you just want things to work when you need them to without wasting your time having to revert to a nandroid or doing some other wizardry.
"Well, why don't you just go buy an iPhone then?" you might say
I've actually contemplated it but I do really like android, Google Maps are the **** (I depend on Navigation a lot )and I like to be able to customize. And I also don't really want to pay the money to terminate my contract so I'm kinda just stuck. But I thought about doing one thing.
A couple weeks ago, I unrooted and relocked my phone and flashed stock images for JB on CDMA and from there all I did was unlock and root keeping it stock and I tell you I glad I did because all my problems no longer seem to exist. My battery life might not be what I was getting on 4.2 these last couple days but I think I'm willing to stick with this for now until Verizon gets off their ass and pushes an update to us.
I'm not trying to rant to the Dev community or complain that y'all aren't living up to my satisfaction. Hell, maybe somebody might have a solution I haven't tried yet. I'm just putting this out there in case someone was having the same trouble and could get some help.

On ParanoidAndroid 2.54 + franco.kernel r300. None of the problems you mentioned are present or has ever happened with me. Perhaps if you didn't mod your phone so much as to NOT be able to pinpoint a problem is where you went wrong.

Thats cool, you already tried your fair share of roms, if none of them worked for you the stock is the best with unsurpassed stability. Despite whats advertised about the nexus, the stock android firmware is excellent too, specially when you want something that just plain works.

Stock is the way to go, but you don't have to leave the xda because you no longer run a custom ROM. there is a lot of useful information that is shared here that doesn't necessarily apply to custom ROM.
I am also running stock rom from now on.

I see how you feel abouyt this. I have had issues as well. It really stems from what Roms are and what we expect from them. The term Night lies have lost a little bit of its worry recently because they are fairly bug free. But that doesn't mean that little tweaks and mods aren't killing battery life and deteriorate over time due to bad patches and coding.
That said I would highly recommend checking out BuglessBeast. They are not night lies by any means. They are highly stable AOSP Roms that perform much better then anything else on the market. He has few commits aside from under the hood tweaks. Reboot menu, emoji and a slight few other things are it. I have never had an issue with them and recommend checking them out. Also they are pretty much the only VZW app compatible ROM. Peter has been building BuglessBeast since Eclair on the Droid1 (almost 3 years now). Always providing an excellent experience.

Stock + root is the way to go for me on Nexus phones. On my last non Nexus (SGS3) I was always flashing new roms trying to look for something that just works, but I am tired of it. On my Nexus S and GNexus, stock rom is amazing, I don't need anything else.

I'm with this guy as well... I upgraded to a stock 4.2 rom (with root, but not a custom build).. and I have been smooth sailing since. It seems with all these custom roms and kernels there are nothing but issues. Sure, they're a TAD faster or offer little tweaks but when you need to use your device in the real world and it f*cking reboots while navigating somewhere because of a stupid tweak you made.. well, I can't see why it's even needed.

This phone runs very well with Stock+Root. I normally root devices because of different apps I like to use, and the ability to make custom backups...but I dont normally try anything bleeding edge...lol.
Partly because of my experience on an HTC phone...hated Sense and bought the GNex because of the AOSP.

No need to bash the custom roms that some devs here work so hard to make, i agree that stock is amazing but android would be a boring scene without the custom roms out there
We would just be like Ios, Wp and blackberry users, stuck with what we've got
Others wouldnt even have the chance to use a newer OS version because their phone has been abandoned by official support.
Or many of u guys would have crappy colors or other issues that custom roms and kernels DID fix
I use stock but i love the fact that there are custom roms around

No I get that, it's good to see support for older devices but c'mon have you counted the amount of 4.1.2 roms that are available for the gnex? If I build android I'm automatically called a developer? Because that's the way it seems here...

I don't know why people keep bringing up the so crappy colors. In reality, the crappy colors are the ones custom ROM offer.

its the kernels that offer the colors(the kernels that the ROM developers include too). of all the kernels available, only a very few distinguish themselves from the stock crappy colors.

To root, or not to root. Solos' Long journey to finding his fate.

Yeah pretty much sums it up. I rooted my first note 2 everything was fine then all of a sudden i installed a kernel and it would take 12 hours to charge to full from fulll empty. and about 15 min to even turn on. ever since then i cracked the screen and got a replacement. kinda liking it stock. but kinda wana root it again. only thing stopping me is that i dont want anything to happen to this phone. I DUNNO WHAT TO DO. any suggestions?

I don't understand why you people think root access on a phone is some big mystical journey that must be deeply considered before undertaking on ' the path' . It's one click and it's done. Another click and it's gone. What's the big deal.

Its just i messed up my phone last time "i think" unless it was just a manufacturers defect. just wanted to know any tips people might have so it might not happen again. No need to be a douchebag.

Whether or not you should root your phone is completely up to you. If you like stock, leave it stock. You don't have to go around flashing new kernels or ROMs if you're satisfied with stock. I rooted it because I wanted tethering and unlimited multiwindows... I have the stock kernel and stock ROM but deodexed with a few mods that I like. There are a ton of awesome ROMs out there but I'm not trying to win a popularity/nerd contest as to who can make the most changes to their phones. Make your phone the way you want it and what you want out of it.
Pretty much what i'm saying is are you happy with your phone right now? what would you change about it and is it possible to do this easily?

I thought about rooting also, but I'm happy with it stock and have no issues what so ever. This is the first and only phone I've not rooted. There's always a downside to rooting, whether it be updating, bugs, whatever. I'm enjoying my phone as is with apps I don't like simply disabled.

I personally don't see enough evidence for trolling but I think it was the literary license you took with "Solos' Long journey to finding his fate" that raised the troll alert for some. Had you merely titled it "To root, or not to root" you may have had less suspicions (but who am I to tell you how to express yourself.. some of us tend to be more or less tolerant than others & I found value in your thread)..
You may want to check out my thread as I too was exploring the "to root, or not root" debate given how remarkable the Note2 is. As I mentioned there I honestly am very happy with the all the customization available in Go Launcher over stock TW & so far satisfied with the battery life which prompted the need debate but I also think I should be able to tether wirelessly with my data allotment on occasion & check out Titanium backup & all Avast options that require root so I will likely root-update this weekend as I want zero downtime during the week. I do appreciate the stability I'm currently experiencing so if that becomes compromised I am trusting posters here that its full unroot option would enable easy reversibility. I also currently have Monthly4G™ Handset Protection but hopefully I won't ever have to use it. -Peace
