Dirty Clean Flashing - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

I know this is a noob question to ask and has probably been asked but the way I have flashed every single rom was like this:
-Flash back to Stock Rooted EL29
-Flash EL26 kernel
-Flash rom..
So I want to flash Touched by a SGS4 1.5 gb27 but I am currently running stock rooted GB27, Is it called dirty flashing if I flash directly from my current setup, by flashing EL26 kernel then flashing this rom? Or Do I have to go back to el29 and repeat the process?
Thanks.. ...

Your step one flashing el29 is not necessary. Dirty flashing is flashing el26 then flashing a different rom or update and only wiping dalvik and cache. Generally if you are moving between different roms it is best to wipe system and data. Being that there could be alot of headache.

Patrao is right. You do not need to flash back to GB stock before flashing from JB to JB. Since you are already running gb27, your partitioning is good to go. Dirty flash simply replaces your current Rom with the new one. Wall paper, contacts, downloaded apps, all stay. Full wipe(clean flash) involves wiping data, which wipes everything I just listed above, including all of your settings, contacts texts, etc. Try dirty flash first. Since you are on jb, you have nothing to lose. Just reboot to recovery, do a backup, wipe cache and dalvik only, then flash new ROM. If you have issues, just reboot back to recovery and flash it clean. But I always flash dirty, jb to jb, and haven't had any issues. Good luck

So I was running GB27 and i guess i took your advice, and i went into recovery, delete data, flashed jbwipex2 and then flashed my room and got a bootloop... well not really bootloop it was kind of like a stuck at splash screen then it turned off and repeated..

Did you check the md5 to make sure it was a good download? Sounds like a bad flash. Download rom again and try flashing again

What recovery did you clean flash from?
With TBSGS4 or most if not all ROMs flash EL26+CWM or EL29 Direct boot kernel and do your full wipe and flash from one of those recoveries.
That's what I have up in the OP under install directions. Trust me I bootlooped a few times flashing from agat's recovery.

With what? About flashing from EL26 or EL29. That's for clean flashing. I'm going to be making update zips for each new version as well as a full ROM so no more dirty ROM flashes.
Under my install directions it has clean flash from EL26 (preferably) or EL29 DB kernel. Also in post #4 has that in the "How to flash a custom ROM." Section.

Problem's been solved.

my friend , I am suffering the similarity as you were . Could you give me some advice? here is my situation:
I want to taste the White Out Rom V.4 or the Re-Calked in Jellybean ROM V1.1.
At first ,I was in Jellyverse 3.0 GB27 , so I flash EL26 kernel , flash JB.Format_All_X2 ,and flash rom ,but it repeated the first screen ,restart and restart.
Then I flash it back to EL29,repeat the process just said, still my S2 repeated again and again at the first screen.
all the best !!gratitude and gratitude!

Did you wrote wipe everything exactly according to the install instructions? Sounds like not. Also, re-download the ROM, sounds like you may have a bad dl as well.

good friend ,I flash a JB.Format_All_X2 after flshing a EL 26 kernel , so the area of data ,system ,cache, preload are all formatted twice. So I think I've done as the introduction. Do you mean there is something else I haven't wipe????????
On the other hand , the situation I said occurs frequently. Does a bad download occurs frequently ??
need your further advice. Gratitude!!!!

Easiest way to see if you have a good download almost every time is download the ROM to your PC check the MD5 then transfer to your phone
And check the MD5 again. You would be surprise how many times I've gotten a bad d/l when downloading to my phone.

Lost Rogue Recovery, still have root

I'm running VeNuM ICE 3.1.1 with FC22 Modem and Kernel. Apparently I used stock on the kernel during my last flash and lost my recovery. What's the easiest way to get it back since I'm already rooted and the Android System Recovery <3e> doesn't give me the option to flash anything?
Odin or mobile odin.

Will the odin thing work for me too, or will I mess it up further. from what I have read, odin seems like what I am supposed to do.
sorry if I wasnt supposed to ask in this thread, but at least it shows I am searching!

the aokp that I flashed came with fc15 kernel and I wanted to flash to fc22 and that is when I realized I was only able to boot into android system recovery.

From what I've heard is not to mess with a Recovery while on ICS due to their being bricks... I'd suggest using the ODIN one click to EL29, then use autoroot package with option C, to install Rogue recovery and flash to a newer ICS ROM.

What id suggest is downloading chris41gs stock el26 recovery and use mobile odin to flash it. Then upon reboot go into recovery and flash whatever u want next. Then if u want to switch roms again or update, follow the same procedure.
thanks Febby & rsalinas1, I used sfhubs one click odin to stock, then installed FC24 with cwm and I am good to go. good (cheap) learning experience for me.

Problem Flashing Roms

I'm currently running the stock EL29 with root and CWM but whenever I try to install a custom rom (AOPK, CM9, etc...) through CWM, it says "Instillation Aborted" as if they weren't made for this phone when I know they were. What's going on?

It turns out that is was just the version of CWM that I was using but now I have a new problem. I flashed CM9 and everything worked EXCEPT the data connection so then I flashed AOPK and had the same problem. The only way I can get online is via wifi. How do I fix this?

Try going back to gingerbread and flashing the EL26 kernal. Then flash the ICS rom you want through that recovery.
AOKP and CM9 have problems with data. every time you or system turn off screen say goodbye to data until 1.enable disable airplane mode or 2.reboot that's the main reason I stay away from these awesome roms until source arrives.
These roms are the best. IMO
1.odin back to stock el29 full reset oc
2.boot update profile and prl
3.copy the rom files to sd
4.turnitoff it off
4.enter download mode and flash el26+cmw for AOKP or el29+cwm direct boot for CM9
5.clear cache, factory data reset, clear dalvik on advance menu
6.go back and select install zip from sd card and choose the rom and flash it
7.flash gapps if apply
8.go back and select reboot system
9.enjoy these awesome roms.
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
I think I FINALLY got it to work. I started stock with rooted EL29 Odin-OC, flashed the "StockCWM-EL26.tar.m5d" in Odin, flashed the AOKP build 37 rom, flashed gapps, then flashed the FE16 kernel AND modem. When I rebooted the data was working.
Not that I am advocating this, and I am far from an expert, but I odin flash a stock rooted rom (SPH-D710.FC22_CL287574_ROOTED-oc-sfx) without going back to el29 just to have a nice clean stock rom to flash over with something else (like FIFO2). I just try to make sure I do everything in the same session so I don't get stuck in a stock recovery.
My order when flashing (non-Odin):
calkulin's format all
Modem (sometimes...if newer is available)
Rom
Kernel (with a custom recovery; sometimes the roms come with a stock recovery so if you reboot before installing a custom one, you'll have to either use odin to flash a custom recovery or mobile Odin)
any additional items that the rom didn't include (like gapps, etc.)
reboot

Another thing to keep in mind is that AOKP was ported to the E4GT. That could cause issues depending on what you're coming from. Make sure to read all the instructions from the dev before flashing. If the worst happens, buy insurance on your phone and smash it...That's what I did with my evo when I bricked it.

Noob Root Questions

Hello,
I am brand new to all this stuff and this is my first post. I just rooted my phone and installed CWM. My question is I want to install the blu kubin rom but is there anything else that I need to do regarding the kernal before I switch from EL29 GB to an ICS rom? Also if I dont like the rom and want to switch to another one what do I have to do so I dont brick my phone? Do I have to flash back to EL29 before switching roms? I am so confused!!! Thank you all so much for all your help!!!
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda app-developers app
You will need to Odin the el26+cwm5 kernel to flash blu kuban, to return to GB if you so choose, just Odin one click el29, to change to another ICS rom Odin the el26+cwm5 kernel and boot straight into recovery to flash the rom you choose. I've gotten into the habit of just odining el26+cwm5 any time I wanna use recovery no matter which rom I'm on. Make sure you ALWAYS, ALWAYS, ALWAYS READ EVERYTHING IN THE ROMS OP AND FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS EXACTLY. Also read up on the stickied threads about flashing roms and how not to brick

You can also safely use the format files that avoid the wipe data/factory reset that is so risky instead of the el26+cwm. But both methods are safe, just depends on your preferences.
Calkulin's format_all and/or Rujelus22's format x2 (which is in the OP of the Blu Kuban thread)
For best results, everyone will tell you to flash ICS roms using EL26 kernel. I used EL29 to flash the BluKuban Rom without a problem (not saying u should) I think you are safe as long as you DON'T do a factory reset or reset data INSTEAD use Calkulins Format all file OR Rujelus Wipe 2x file Then flash the Rom.
So; Download the BluKuban Rom.
Download Rujelus Wipe 2x file or Calkulins Format all file.
Place files to sdcard.
Go into GB recovery (hold vol up and power)
Flash Rujelus wipe 2x or Calkulins
Flash the BluKuban
Reboot. First reboot takes a bit.
After reboot go to settings, Rom updater and download part 2 (it finishes theming Talk) that's all.
Alot of helpful people on that Rom. Just ask if u have any further questions.

NEVER go back to GB from ICS (if u choose to go back, flash EL26)

If you've just rooted but haven't installed recovery then you need to run the autoroot tool. And then you can more forward with flashing Blu Kuban.

Question - CM 10a6 to JB / JellyBean

Hey guys,
I just wanted to start off by saying thank you to everyone involved here - all of the guys answering questions, the coders, the devel guys, the people who sponsor, host the site, everyone involved. I have an SPH-D710 currently running CM 10a6, port by... Darkstar? Something similar to that.
I've read about JBrissen's JB port and I'd like to roll that - it doesn't mention which GApps to flash.
Can anyone tell me which version of GApps to flash / provide a download link?
My main CM10a6 issue is battery life - full battery at 6:30 am this morning, dead battery at 3pm. No real use, calls, or texts; that sucks.
Anywho, if anyone would like to provide a link to the JBrissen & whichever GApps, that's fantastic - if I failed in my search button capabilities feel free to let me know
You failed.

CM9a6 -> CM10
I fully welcomed the fail. I actually work in IT and am used to this kind of thing, but hey, I won't learn by being an arrogant douche, now will I? My work more focuses around datacenter/247 availability. Android is fairly new to me, and mods/roms are new as of ~ 1 week for me. But I digress.
I searched more and think I found what I'm looking for. Has anyone gone thru these steps and bricked?
I'm running CM 9a6 (20120628), kernel 3.0.15 663858. I've been using MobileOdin. I had at some point flashed el29 and rooted, and most recently flashed EL 26, then directbooted CWM recovery, and loaded CM 9a6 from there, wiping data, cache, davlik.
Now, I can boot CWM 5.5.0.4, or I've got a directboot image I can run via mobileodin for el29 v3 something, I've also got stockcwm el26.
My plan is to go to cm10-20120822-unofficial and gappsjb20120726.
Has anyone run thru a similar procedure, and what's the general advice? Just looking to not brick and possibly have the procedure for moving forward should I want to swap roms around.
Let me know if I'm not being clear.
hurrah
so perhaps labeling your images and things correctly is a good idea. I believe I just loaded stock el26 and bricked my phone.
Yay for me. I think I'll leave now before the trolls come out.
Sigh...
If you can enter download mode. Flash the direct boot el26 kernel
Wipe everything
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Profit

What he said. You will end up with the yellow triangle... to remove it,you may want to direct CWM flash then go to cm9. Use that triangle remove apk. Then mobile odin flash direct CWM then CM10 though. If you care to remove the triangle.....

oh, it wasn't just me.
I did some reading, apparently sometimes you need 2 or 3 power cycles.
After 3 power cycles, I'd actually done exactly what you stated above, and I'm now powered by google now.
If I understand correctly, I flashed a kernel that's incompatible with my ROM & recovery, and effectively disabled my phone, sans download mode. Flashing the ready boot el29 gives me the safe recovery for the later rom.
Cheers rover.
Cheers all of xda. With the patience and hard work of this team, forums, and helpful folk like rover and calisro and all of the developers (too many to name), you guys do what Sprint promised and couldn't deliver for 8 months. Finally, a happy customer, and yet what gets me here voids warranties.
Now, to scour how to fix the evil yellow triangle after el26.
Just get to CM9. Then use the triangle removal app in market. Then direct boot CWM and wipe and go to CM10. WINwithout triangle.

hmm.
do I wipe, CWM to CM9, then triangle, and CWM to CM10? I'm on 10 now
in other news, I saved 2 other boxes. highly wonderful night.

sweet
Awesome.
Question: I've read a lot on modems and PRL and all of that. The JB build I'm using has a 'Check for sprint updates' that wanted to update my profile; is that hte update people were talking about to not do as it caused bugs?
Question 2: ff18/ff30? Not sure on any of this -- there was an update yesterday or hte day before to help battery life. If I'm going to be back on ICS, can I apply this?

The ROM will have a kernel with it ... You just need to make sure you flash it correctly.. That's why I said what I said in you're previous post.. Tell me what ROM you want and I'll walk you through it.. After you will have a way to flash almost any ROM..

I know.. He's just nervous. So I'm going to write up the el29 direct boot/mobile Odin way. That way I know he shouldn't have a problem. Thanks for you're post and all you do for this phone..

OK... Here's how I flash a ROM.. Hasn't let me down yet. I take no credit for this method.. The info is in xda,buddy..
First...you will need to get all the needed files( ROM, Gapps( for the rom you pick ),EL29 direct boot kernel. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1662295 ..this is the link to rwilcos repo..scroll down to gb-touch wiz based kernels. Then look for EL 29 direct boot/tar.. You will need the tar.md5 format. Place this tar and the ROM and Gapps on the root of you're internal sdcard( not in a folder ).Also download TD's JB format all zip( if doing a new install of a JB rom.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2077277
Second...Now get mobile Odin.. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1347899 .. This is a link to a lite version.. Install mobile Odin..You just need it for kernel flashing,so don't need to do the extra download it prompts..
Third... Make sure you have done all the above...
Fourth... Use mobile Odin to flash el29 direct boot kernel..( open mobile Odin..give super user permission..click kernel..click internal sdcard..pick el29 direct boot kernel..scroll down to flash firmware..click..check md5.. Flash.. It will boot to recovery on its own..
Fifth... Once in recovery( push volume up,volume down, volume up..thus will make you're power button the select/enter button.
Sixth...Wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache( under advanced ).. Go to mounts/storage..and format system ( only system ).. Go back to first screen..( bottom of the page/ Go back ) should have told you this earlier..If flashing a JB rom... go to install from sdcard.. install from internal sdcard.. now pick TD's JB format all zip and flash it.... ( if you choose to install a JB rom and use this JB format all zip. .you don't need to do all the wipes. )But I do them anyway.. clean install.
Seventh... Now pick install from sdcard..install from internal sdcard..now pick the ROM zip file and scroll down to yes..click.. Let it do its thing...After its done. Pick install from internal sdcard again, but this time pick the gapps zip and flash it..When all is done..go back to first page and click reboot..enjoy.. It will take a little bit for the ROM to boot up.. Make a snack and wait..
Don't forget to thank the ROM dev..rwilco..chainfire...and Tdunham..

Very good choice..just as @jdsingle76 said.. The steps I gave you will work perfect for that ROM...Just remember that you need a jelly bean modem..and mobile Odin doesn't flash modems.. So flash the modem of choice in recovery after you flash the ROM. Then you can update you're prl and profile.. Unless you're on a jelly bean modem, I can't remember as I'm writing this but I thought that screen shot had gb27 as you're modem, which Is the latest jb modem..so you'd be good to go..side note. I seen you posted in the thread about better signal..Do not take you're protection off the inside cover of you're phone.. I just looked and you do have a jb modem so you need not worry about flashing a modem...
