Hey guys,
I just wanted to start off by saying thank you to everyone involved here - all of the guys answering questions, the coders, the devel guys, the people who sponsor, host the site, everyone involved. I have an SPH-D710 currently running CM 10a6, port by... Darkstar? Something similar to that.
I've read about JBrissen's JB port and I'd like to roll that - it doesn't mention which GApps to flash.
Can anyone tell me which version of GApps to flash / provide a download link?
My main CM10a6 issue is battery life - full battery at 6:30 am this morning, dead battery at 3pm. No real use, calls, or texts; that sucks.
Anywho, if anyone would like to provide a link to the JBrissen & whichever GApps, that's fantastic - if I failed in my search button capabilities feel free to let me know
You failed.

CM9a6 -> CM10
I fully welcomed the fail. I actually work in IT and am used to this kind of thing, but hey, I won't learn by being an arrogant douche, now will I? My work more focuses around datacenter/247 availability. Android is fairly new to me, and mods/roms are new as of ~ 1 week for me. But I digress.
I searched more and think I found what I'm looking for. Has anyone gone thru these steps and bricked?
I'm running CM 9a6 (20120628), kernel 3.0.15 663858. I've been using MobileOdin. I had at some point flashed el29 and rooted, and most recently flashed EL 26, then directbooted CWM recovery, and loaded CM 9a6 from there, wiping data, cache, davlik.
Now, I can boot CWM 5.5.0.4, or I've got a directboot image I can run via mobileodin for el29 v3 something, I've also got stockcwm el26.
My plan is to go to cm10-20120822-unofficial and gappsjb20120726.
Has anyone run thru a similar procedure, and what's the general advice? Just looking to not brick and possibly have the procedure for moving forward should I want to swap roms around.
Let me know if I'm not being clear.
hurrah
so perhaps labeling your images and things correctly is a good idea. I believe I just loaded stock el26 and bricked my phone.
Yay for me. I think I'll leave now before the trolls come out.
Sigh...
If you can enter download mode. Flash the direct boot el26 kernel
Wipe everything
Flash rom
Flash gapps
Profit

What he said. You will end up with the yellow triangle... to remove it,you may want to direct CWM flash then go to cm9. Use that triangle remove apk. Then mobile odin flash direct CWM then CM10 though. If you care to remove the triangle.....

oh, it wasn't just me.
I did some reading, apparently sometimes you need 2 or 3 power cycles.
After 3 power cycles, I'd actually done exactly what you stated above, and I'm now powered by google now.
If I understand correctly, I flashed a kernel that's incompatible with my ROM & recovery, and effectively disabled my phone, sans download mode. Flashing the ready boot el29 gives me the safe recovery for the later rom.
Cheers rover.
Cheers all of xda. With the patience and hard work of this team, forums, and helpful folk like rover and calisro and all of the developers (too many to name), you guys do what Sprint promised and couldn't deliver for 8 months. Finally, a happy customer, and yet what gets me here voids warranties.
Now, to scour how to fix the evil yellow triangle after el26.
Just get to CM9. Then use the triangle removal app in market. Then direct boot CWM and wipe and go to CM10. WINwithout triangle.

Awesome.
Question: I've read a lot on modems and PRL and all of that. The JB build I'm using has a 'Check for sprint updates' that wanted to update my profile; is that hte update people were talking about to not do as it caused bugs?
Question 2: ff18/ff30? Not sure on any of this -- there was an update yesterday or hte day before to help battery life. If I'm going to be back on ICS, can I apply this?

Why is it that when I try to download large files over my phone like roms they always always fail. I have no problem following something small that's maybe 4 mb but whenever I go to download a rom they always fail. No matter what browser I use. Any ideas guys??

Stock Browsers Do not support certain file types. You can always use Opera Mini Browser to download files. Search it on google play. Although it is recommended that you use a computer when downloaded a large amount of data to prevent corruption in data packets. By the way are you currently rooted.? PM Me details.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO.... no one recommends Rom Manager around here especially if you read threads. We at xda like to do things on our own.. Please my friend and anyone in the view of these letters I have typed, leave Rom Manager alone and learn how to do things manually... It could save your phone one day..
My friend Kelsey Jones who needs files downloaded just download Download All from the market and all your problems will be solved...
I personallu do not use rom manager anymore. But for the Newbies its easier because flashing via recovery isn't needed. And al roms are compatible. If yu look at the above post I also recommended using opera browser or using a computer. I'm not telling that she should use rom manager. I'm simply throwing utilities out there FOR HER possible convience. I am a rom dev. And I know that it is super easy to brick your phone a incompatible rom therefore it could be MTD Typed and your on BML Etc. But great suggestion using Download All. It is also a great utility.

+1 for download all files, I have used it since the Hero with very few corrupted or incomplete downloads.
-1 for ROM manager. It is bad news for this device. The recovery partition being combined with the kernel makes it incompatible. Maybe for the device you are on (or coming from Androperz), but it shouldn't even be considered for our device.

I get failed downloads when either my wifi or mobile data gets interrupted. Even for a few seconds.
I flashed this rom and kept my EL29 kernel. Does that mean in order to get this Rom and get my CWM recovery back I have to reset my phone to stock and start all over again with the EL26? Also, is the swype keyboard in the rapps, and how do i get the face unlock to work?
When you flashed Frankenstein rom, your kernel changed to the FE21 kernel included with the rom so not sure what you mean by you kept el29 kernel since that's not compatible with ICS. The reason you have stock android recovery now is because of all the bricking issues performing certain functions in custom ICS recovery so devs are leaving out custom recovery from their roms. So yes, when you want to change roms, backup, etc., you must go back to the el26 cwm kernel first and flash, backup, etc. from there. Not sure about your last two questions since I'm not using that rom. Let me know if you need anything else.

Not to sure what you mean by that. If you're saying what I think you're saying, yes you must use el26 cwm kernel whenever flashing anything ICS related or backing up or restoring. Using anything else and you risk bricking your phone.

Slick_rick is correct, as far as Swype i just sign up for the Swype beta from you phone browser to get a download for it, that way i always have it to restore with titanium so i can get Swype on any rom. There's also some Swype keyboards floating around in the app section but i haven't tried them. They should work though.

Wow... I needed this thread. I just recently went through what I thought were all the instructions to flash this rom. I had previously used the PD Odin executable routine to upgrade from Gingerbread to ICS. I saw the reviews on this rom and really liked what I saw. I used Odin 1.85 to set up CWM-El26 so I could flash this ROM. I got everything working ( I do get that yellow triangle on reboots) but I did notice the CWMod Recovery does not stay on the phone. It reverts back to the basic ICS Recovery (where I GUESS you cannot flash zip files). Now all this said... After flashing this ROM, I am still on FE16. Is there something else I am missing.
I got into rooting when I had my Dinosaur Moment, and now I have that itch again. Thanks again for all your help!

Swype is in the removed apps. You have to Unknown Sources checked under device administration. You can mount your phone, add the swype.apk file to the phone, and install it using the astro file manager. I still go back and forth between swype and the stock ICS keyboard. Word prediction seems to work better in the stock.

Oh well your cwm recovery disappeared because it wasnt packed into the kernel that came with the rom you flashed. And you can get rid of the yellow triangle using a USB jig or an app called triangle away. Just Google search something like "triangle away apk+chainfire+xda" and you should be able to find it.

so i tried to redo this flash with the el26 kernel. but then my phone started acting crazy, telling me that the calendar storage stopped working. finally after putting frankenstein back on my phone, it stopped coming up. the only problem im experiencing now is that i cant download pics in my text messaging. but i can use my 3g, 4g, and wifi for everything else. Epic Touch Blog: Temporary Stock E4GT from emmc
Utility for CM9 Epic Touch
This is a temporary ROM that boots Samsung's Gingerbread EL29 firmware entirely from emmc without making any changes to the ROM currently installed on your phone. When you reboot, you return to recovery where you can re-flash the ROM to return to CM9. This temporary ROM is useful for several purposes.
Update Profile.
Update PRL.
Sprint Activation.
Dial codes and diagnostic mode.
This should be helpful to users of any AOSP-based ROM including CM9, AOKP, etc.

Its for AOSP roms. You currently can't update PRL/Profile, activate your device, or use dialer codes on them so this temporarily allows you to boot stock el29 off the SD card without changing your current rom. You can do what i said from there. Saves you time from doing backups, restoring, etc.

5. Because no automatic reboot occured, I selected "reboot system now" from CWM. Unfortunately this just brings me back into directboot CWM.

I wouldn't say its very common as there are tons of people flashing and we dont hear about half the forum crying about corrupting their imei, thats not to say that its a non issue though. As you can probably see from the numerous threads (main one in the att development). Its advisable to wait, but with any flash you know the risk you are taking.
I was actually holding off till yesterday, ended up just saying eff it and flashed, did the non trip rooting, flashed the latest cwm from the official cwm site. Flashed Aokp, no imei wipe (was scared ****less the whole time though ) Decided i didnt even like the AOKP rom and flashed my carriers stock rom again through odin, So far so good.
However in the future im waiting for a full solution to this imei problem before i root or flash again. :good:
Id say just read the threads, if you understand the risks and want to proceed go ahead. good luck

What's the Safe way to achieve root and cwm ? I have searched and read a lot but like hearing peoples opinions

i flashed my phone with the original at&t root method (which increased flash counter). since then, i've flashed the stock rom (UCALEM) to get non-modified status, reset the flash counter, and flashed the stock update rom (UCALG1) with no problems so far. i wasn't even aware of the imei issues until poking around the forums the other day. i suppose ignorance really is bliss.

i should add.. i used the stock root injected roms (after the initial flash) from here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1739426
So ish there a chance even if we follow AT&T stuff directly? I've never heard of this happening I've had and flashed a lot of phones and never heard of such a thing should we worry or what I wanna flash but don't won't a brick

i think there's always the chance... but you can reduce that chance significantly if you read up and follow the directions.
I know this is a noob question to ask and has probably been asked but the way I have flashed every single rom was like this:
-Flash back to Stock Rooted EL29
-Flash EL26 kernel
-Flash rom..
So I want to flash Touched by a SGS4 1.5 gb27 but I am currently running stock rooted GB27, Is it called dirty flashing if I flash directly from my current setup, by flashing EL26 kernel then flashing this rom? Or Do I have to go back to el29 and repeat the process?
Thanks.. ...
Your step one flashing el29 is not necessary. Dirty flashing is flashing el26 then flashing a different rom or update and only wiping dalvik and cache. Generally if you are moving between different roms it is best to wipe system and data. Being that there could be alot of headache.

Patrao is right. You do not need to flash back to GB stock before flashing from JB to JB. Since you are already running gb27, your partitioning is good to go. Dirty flash simply replaces your current Rom with the new one. Wall paper, contacts, downloaded apps, all stay. Full wipe(clean flash) involves wiping data, which wipes everything I just listed above, including all of your settings, contacts texts, etc. Try dirty flash first. Since you are on jb, you have nothing to lose. Just reboot to recovery, do a backup, wipe cache and dalvik only, then flash new ROM. If you have issues, just reboot back to recovery and flash it clean. But I always flash dirty, jb to jb, and haven't had any issues. Good luck

So I was running GB27 and i guess i took your advice, and i went into recovery, delete data, flashed jbwipex2 and then flashed my room and got a bootloop... well not really bootloop it was kind of like a stuck at splash screen then it turned off and repeated..

Did you check the md5 to make sure it was a good download? Sounds like a bad flash. Download rom again and try flashing again

What recovery did you clean flash from?
With TBSGS4 or most if not all ROMs flash EL26+CWM or EL29 Direct boot kernel and do your full wipe and flash from one of those recoveries.
That's what I have up in the OP under install directions. Trust me I bootlooped a few times flashing from agat's recovery.

With what? About flashing from EL26 or EL29. That's for clean flashing. I'm going to be making update zips for each new version as well as a full ROM so no more dirty ROM flashes.
Under my install directions it has clean flash from EL26 (preferably) or EL29 DB kernel. Also in post #4 has that in the "How to flash a custom ROM." Section.

Problem's been solved.
my friend , I am suffering the similarity as you were . Could you give me some advice? here is my situation:
I want to taste the White Out Rom V.4 or the Re-Calked in Jellybean ROM V1.1.
At first ,I was in Jellyverse 3.0 GB27 , so I flash EL26 kernel , flash JB.Format_All_X2 ,and flash rom ,but it repeated the first screen ,restart and restart.
Then I flash it back to EL29,repeat the process just said, still my S2 repeated again and again at the first screen.
all the best !!gratitude and gratitude!

Did you wrote wipe everything exactly according to the install instructions? Sounds like not. Also, re-download the ROM, sounds like you may have a bad dl as well.

good friend ,I flash a JB.Format_All_X2 after flshing a EL 26 kernel , so the area of data ,system ,cache, preload are all formatted twice. So I think I've done as the introduction. Do you mean there is something else I haven't wipe????????
On the other hand , the situation I said occurs frequently. Does a bad download occurs frequently ??
need your further advice. Gratitude!!!!

Easiest way to see if you have a good download almost every time is download the ROM to your PC check the MD5 then transfer to your phone
And check the MD5 again. You would be surprise how many times I've gotten a bad d/l when downloading to my phone.

Thanks quite quite a lot...... I red/l and check MD5. Then I use a clean flash from ICS to GB27 , a great success, Ha . I also tried a dirty flash from GB27 to GB27 , no failure occurs. I enjoy it .
Besides , thanks for your contribution to all of us , your roms are beautiful.
