after looking at the next gen specs, are any current wp7 owners going to upgrade to next gen? or wait a bit longer till we get some real phones?
I upgraded because I wanted the improved camera and bigger screen on the Titan, but I could understand people being happy with their mango~fied first gen devices
....I am not going to upgrade my device, at least not for immediately. My contract is still running for another 10 month. I am very happy with my HTC Mozart, I got my 2 updates and will certainly get at least one more (Tango) or even Apollo. The device works smooth and stable like on the first day. It's faster then most of the latest 2core Android devices. It's the first time I am not nervously checking the market for new devices while being half way through my contract. So here I am, sitting back very relaxed and I will wait and see what new WP7 devices will be available next year at this same time....
not giving ATT the pleasure! I love the Samsung Focus it has been dev unlocked since the beginning , but buying a new means added expense to the contract and the specs of the new phones dont change enough to warrant the new purchase!
I need to be WOW'ed and as of now I am not WOW'ed with the current offerings of 2nd gen WP7 devices.
If this all we are getting, I'll stick with my first gen device (Trophy) for a little longer...

Going to switch to android galaxy nexus until windows 8 apollo comes out.
Not impressed with the quality of apps on windows phone. But highly impressed with the OS itself. So will wait for microsoft to attract more support.
I expect my Samsung Focus to last 2 more years. It's smooth and does pretty everything I want. I learned from moving from 3mp to 5mp cell phone camera is the number is irrelevant. Most cellphones just have ****ty cameras, rather just buy a real camera.
As much as I like the metro UI and the performance of the current devices I can't really see WP7 being overly desirable in comparison to other platforms. The marketplace is locked down, with a very limited number of applications. If given the choice of upgrading to a gen 2 device I would switch to Android hands down.
All feelings aside, I'm glad to see the Chevron project making progress. Microsoft needs to loosen up they're grip on the marketplace submission criteria.

You are out of touch too my friend, there are many people I know who do not care about apps, be they iphone users, andoid users, BB users or WP users. There is a huge demographic out there who have smartphones simply because they think they are the cool thing to have, they may use email, they may use BBM, they may use Siri but they rarely is ever use apps. Of course there is another HUGE demographic that DO use apps (myself included), who do care about the size of their relevant app store. I even know one old guy who bought himself a Desire HD because he "liked the look of it" and only uses it for calls and texts. I set him a Gmail account up for the phone but he never even uses that, then there is my aunt who has an iphone 3G and never switches the blasted thing on because she is "saving the battery" in case she needs to make an emergency call, or there is the girl who works for me who only uses her Blackberry for BBM and taking pictures and thats it - trust me, at least 50% of the people I know who own smartphones could get by with a feature phone for all the use they get out of them, but they go into the phone retailers and have expensive smartphones shoved down their throats by pushy sales staff - tragic!!
Anecdotal "evidence" is meaningless. Don't cite "I know many people who.." as proof of anything. Statistics have proven that for iPhones, the average user (as of last January) has 88 apps downloaded and installed on their phone (in addition to the 20 apps that are pre-installed). Certainly, that means that some people have fewer than that number, but it also means that some people have far more.
Exactly. On my iTouch I have over 30 useful third party apps not counting games. On android I have even more (had that device longer). On WP7 I have less than 10 because there simply isn't much worthwhile to get from there. I'm not counting stock and own apps that would be baked into the ROM on other platforms anyways.

As I posted elsewhere I've been eligible for upgrade for 3 months but I wanted 32GB or nothing. My choices were:
- Upgrade and live with 16GB (could probably get a Lumia 800 for free)
- Upgrade to android/iOS
- Do not upgrade and get a PMP to use alongside my 1st gen phone
It will be annoying to carry two devices but I opted for a Zune HD. The good thing is that I can now cancel my contract and wait until there's a proper phone to upgrade to as the new batch is worthless. With Pay As You Go I won't be tied to any carrier and will even be able to jump ship if the 3rd gen isn't better.

I expect things to radically improve in the next year. MS just hired a Samsung VP to run WP. You know what you get when you put a Korean in control of a smartphone division? Fantastic toys! Think about it like it's Samsung having all that MS dough to come up with amazing products.

Leaving an OS over 10% of apps is pointless. WMPU did an article that claim that 90% of the most wanted apps from other platforms are now on WP. Just because a certain app isn't available it is not the fault of MS but more the fault of the developer of the app and should not be cause to leave.

If you want stats, here are some stats,
According to Neilsen, the average smartphone user has 22 apps (37 on iphone)
According to Localytics 1 in 4 downloaded apps are used once then discarded
Again according to Neilsen, the most used apps are Facebook, Google Maps and the Weather Channel (all available on WP7).
According to COMScore (Feb 2011), Users prefer to use mobile web over apps, 34.4% used apps in the USA versus 28% in Europe versus 53% Japan. I am not saying that apps are not important, they clearly are very important, but they are not the be all and end all.
This is a genuine question - how many games does the average smartphone user have? And how many of the top played games are on WP?

I have no idea how many games the average smartphone user has, I have one game, as for top games, the top on the iPAD (I have no iPhone) are bike baron, trivial pursuit, angry birds, sonic and sea All stars racing and aquaria, perhaps someone else can furnish the top games on android.

I use both and eash OS has it's strengths and weaknesses. I actually prefer WP to Android except for my dirty little shame: Every Nexus I get turns into a portable torrent box. And since I don't have a computer this is my all in one. And they did a fantastic job with Android Chrome, I must admit.
But this pissing contest **** has got to stop.
Why can't people except that in some areas on different OS's will always be better. Some hardware specs will always be better. That's life. Personally? I root for a three horse race. Each OS, Android, iOS, and WP all pushing and pulling to stay ahead.
The end result? The consumer wins.

I think Microsoft really dropped the ball. They were one of the few in the mobile smartphone game with their windows mobile platform. It was a true multitasking device that was capable of doing almost anything.
Then the iPhone came out and basically did less then WM phones just made things prettier. Know instead of Microsoft stepping up their game with their age looking UI they just hung back for a while.
Then came Android, which almost feels like it would have been the natural succession for Microsoft except they just waited. So all of us WM phone users started to jump over to Android. Now we are so happy there, why would we want to even try a Windows phone.

Yep. At any given time I tend to have three or so and swap back and forth. Right now? Main EDC is a stock GN with a back up 4s. The 900 is my next and I'm considering a SGS3. If the SGS3 has TW puked onto it, that's out. I sell the 4s and move into the 5. If I find a Titan 2 cheap I may grab one to play with it. (Forgot to mention I'm still looking for a Finny.)
I love Mobiles.
I had an interesting 'battle' with a windows rep today. I beat her hands down loading a webpage. She wasn't very happy.
But she did beat me updating a Facebook status.

Went through the article where they compared the new windows phone flagship to our phone's twin brother.
What's everyone's thoughts on WP?
I've always gotten Nokia phones, solid and reliable (Still have my E63, my reliable backup! Smartphone with 5 days battery ). But once symbian died and iOS+Android began dominating I switched to android. I wish Nokia had joined the Android train but they didn't...but I've played with and seen all the stuff about WP, and I think it could be a promising competitor if Nokia and Microsoft play their cards right.
But for now...the t989 and Skyrocket win in my book in terms of performance, utility, and apps. But having used FB and Twitter integration, and seeing how snappy it is with even a single core, and most importantly MS Office...I would have to say in those aspects WP definitely has a leg up on Android and iOS...
It will be interesting to see if in 2 years when my contract expires and it's time for an upgrade weather WP will have matured enough for me to defect...and if Nokia still builds rock-solid phones like it used to...it may not be an argument of if, but if I can even wait for my contract to expire .
Thoughts please, no flames!

I've put some major thought into this, so I hope you truly consider my response. I've actually had the opportunity to hold and play with the Lumia 900 unlike mr. Windows phone sucks comment above me.
If you're going to go AT&T no matter what, you can ignore my first con.
Cons for the Lumia 900
1. AT&T!!!
2. As far as I know - Nokia drive is not included. (Not really sure - just from seeing review unit videos on other sites)
3. Zero google support on WP7. This is a huge downer for me - especially since I rely on Google voice for everything, but this also includes maps, google+, docs, etc. Although gmail and google calendar sync fine and there are third party alternatives to some.
4. I own a mac and wp7 phones tend to not play very nice sometimes - even with wp7 connector.
5. It's pretty heavy compared to my t989.
6. WP7 notifications bug me. So does the status bar.
7. Lack of apps (you already know this it seems)
8. Windows phone gets boring after about a month. The smooth animations and transitions only hold your attention for so long. I started with Android, switched to windows, went back to android, back to windows, back to Android to stay unless windows does something amazing.
9. Locked down. Including not being able to send files to a friend (besides pictures)
Pros
1. Sick looking phone. Sleek and gorgeous. Beautiful design.
2. $99
3. WP7.5 is a darn nice phone OS - sleek and smooth. Beautiful animations. Quick links to common tasks. They did a lot of good in this release - but it still has it's quirks.
4. Carl Zeiss 8MP cam. Should make for some beautiful shots.
5. Screen is gorgeous. Bright, vivid, clearblack. Best screen I've ever seen on a WP7 phone and a great size too.
6. Odd, but convenient power button placement
7. The Lumia 900 is what Windows phone should have started with. At the price point and the great hardware, this is a contender phone.
Take it for what it's worth. Had my hands on one about a week ago.

Lol I have said Lumina forever...guess its just my car-centric mind wanting it to be Lumina....whoops.
I'm not saying I would get a WP right now...maybe if the platform gets popular and matures, gets some better features and apps and gets all the kings worked out...I'm hoping it happens.

I just bought a Dell Venue Pro since I been dying to try WP7 and my experiences is that the OS is REALLY GOOD! I haven't gotten a Single crash or Lag or the need to hack for overclocking or getting rid of a crappy skin everything is freaking smooth. I still miss alot of things of my GSII thats taking a break until official ICS update. Windows Phone overall is 80% there but those 20% leave you on a empty stomach wanting for more.

Though Windows Phone OS is very nice and smooth, the utter lack of apps and even greater lack of customization will wear on you quickly. If you're on XDA that tells me that having options matters to you, and with Windows Phone, there are very little options.

Well thats the point, of course right now the skyrocket/989 and many other phones are obviously better...but I'm thinking in a couple of years WP might be a viable player if they play their cards right and the OS matures to support cutting edge hardware and has app development.

Specs can be better but we all know higher specs don't mean anything in the android world. Lets not even mention lack of support! I can bet money that Nokia will keep updating the Nokia 900 for year or Two while AT&T,Samsung and Google might not even support the skyrocket for more than a year. Don't get me wrong I love having high ends specs, but is like a prostitute that tells you she loves you and in two months she stole your money and left you out in the streets that how I feel about android and all this carriers.

This phone might be the exception, rather than the rule, since this is the THE PHONE that Nokia plans on cracking the U.S. market with, so it's probably higher on their priority list. But in my experience, do not expect magical support from Nokia. I just recently (as of February) defected from a Nokia N8 to Android and for the year I owned it, this was their software release schedule:
1) Announce software update
2) Wait 3 months
3) Announce release date
4) Push release date back 3 months
5) Start shipping YOUR EXACT PHONE MODEL with the software update out of the box
6) Wait 1 month
7) Start rolling out software update to customers who already bought the phone in Turkey(insert other relatively small European country here)
8) Wait 3 months
9) Push software update to U.S.
Now I've learned that Samsung isn't much better, I'm just saying that the grass is always greener on the other side. The other OS always seems to get their updates faster
**Side note: all Lumias definitely come with Nokia Maps. Which I miss, since Navigation has routed me through some weird routes before and I've rarely had a bad experience with Nokia Maps.

My 7 year old sister could formulate a more thought out comment.
How can an OS suck? I know so many people that have them and really like the simplicity and easy use of windows phones. Don't be a fanboy.

I get what your saying, Nokia doesn't have the best update reputation with Symbian as a owner of tons of symbian Nokia devices. But lately I can say that nokia has clean up their act especially with windows phone. The skyrocket might be the better spec phone but going down the memory lane Google and Samsung have failed to please their consumers that own a Nexus S/4g,Behold 2,The Original Galaxy S owners the list goes on. The choice goes down to you want a 2011/2012 high end phone or do you want 2 years of updates and support?

Its a discussion...on weather the platform can mature into something competitive. Nobody doubts that our phones are better in many many ways.
Long ago (well...more like 4 or 5 years ago) Symbian and Blackberry were the big dogs, people said the iPhone was just a rich person's phone that would die out because it was so expensive. And Android was a nerd's phone...
Look at where we are now...times change.

LOL Rival? I think you taking this a little too serious. Both devices are Smartphones they both are being sold in stores so I think is safe to compare the two devices. Consumers always compare cars,clothes,computers thats just the way it is.
Windows is great OS for me. For both PC and Phone. I used to own hd2 and quiet impressed with windows 6.5. Being honest i have never use 7+ of windows . I really want to try this phone.

WP7 looks nice. And might appeal to windows users. But from my experience the development for it is horrible. I attend many Microsoft conferences and they're always begging for developers and giving away phones. And when asked if future updates will contain USB support or modem and wifi. Information. They ask "why would anyone.need that?" The average user doesn't care if he's using Linux based software or windows. But what the average user does know is "my friend bought a windows phone,it sucks. It was always freezing and a lack of apps " I actually heard this in a discussion o was having with a girlfriend who was considering a windows phone. I thought the Nokia was an awesome phone and don't believe the freezing part. But if you're looking toward the future... move away from Microsoft. Windows is the OS of the past and they know it

Samsung developing its own Sortware and leaving Android success behind? Although I doubt it and this article is probably about TW refresh but the idea of Samsung software will personally keep me away. To me Samsung is a sexy hardware but it's own implementation of TW etc drives me nuts. Say Samsung does abandon Android, I personally will say Goodbye, how about you? Imagine sexy software but no Android... Will you stick with Samsung?
Samsung must be mistaken to have me follow their TW or anything even better.
They've tried this multiple times most recently with Bada...for Samsung Android is just a way to gain money while behind scenes they create a better one or thats what they think

A lot of manufacturers seem to have "Apple Envy". They see what Apple did with the iPhone and think they can re-produce it. It takes someone really good at stealing stuff and reselling it as your own to be Apple. I don't think many other companies could do it.
Or, you could go the Microsoft route and just license the hell out of everything.
Samsung is a beast.....everything in my house is Samsung ... If they wanna leave Android and do their own thing...I say go for it, they been setting back watching how Android been doin things and taking things over..now its time for Samsung to bring out the guns and strike...They have been planning this for a while...it was just a matter of time

My personal experience with Samsung = LoS, ICS almost 1 year later and still no go. TW, well I'm sure someone loves it, just not me.
Say Samsung does go off route, I think Sharp will come out striking lol. And the app market, lets start the count from 1+ lol

I'm not a fan of TW either but its easy to get rid of...some UI out that isn't that easy and will still run in the background if you like it or not.....Samsung pushes the button of technology.....smart TV (hello Samsung), blue led fridge, the do everything washer/dryer....lol...I know the need to work on the software portion....but I not gonna drop them cuz they wanna do it all themselves...I'm sure you can root it and someone will figure out to put the market back on and stuff just like they did with the Kindle Fire...let em try, you never know they could surprise you

if they do i hope they will still make android phones. i personally like the match with samsung and android. makes me even more of a fan boy i suppose, but i guess im just a android guy, i just think samsung is the only competitor big enough for apple. plus i love the fact that when i pull out my samsung phone around apple people they start bashing me, then i let them know a little info, they shut up real quick. but i hope they dont move all phones over to whatever theyre gonna call this os.
If it will be better than Android, why not?

Look at what's happened in the past 6 months alone:
1) Google closed on Motorola Mobility (right here in my backyard) - meaning Motorola is out of the mobile biz if I understand correctly. To do it Google had to promise to keep Android open for 5 more years... and I doubt it will be much longer than that for newer versions.
2) Microsoft is launching their own tablet - a big shift in things because they're adopting the idea that controlling the hw and sw sides will end up with a better product - and in general is right (so long as the dev support is there)
So if this is the model being taken - give a generic version (at a fee) for manufacturers who want it but keep the best completely in house - then Samsung has 5 years to really work on that before they'd have to even think about departing from Android on any devices. My guess is this would be on low end devices first to potentially avoid licensing fees for Android in the future - but time will tell.
But hey, this is all speculation and a lot changes every year - I'll just wait and see for now.

I don't see another OS getting huge developer support.
I'm sure the Galaxy name will help them sell but once consumers learn it doesn't have all the same apps it will flop.

So I didn't see it anywhere on here, but I read an article on my BlinkFeed the other day about Microsoft trying to get HTC to let users pick between android and WP8 or dual booting them on the One. What do you guys think? Not gonna happen? Really cool or really dumb?

Not going to happen on the one and its a stupid idea. 1) I can make my phone look like wp8 on android, cant do the opposite. 2) wp8 is inferior to android for many reasons, including theming limitations.

Well I still use a zune so I looked at windows phones for a bit, but my decision was made because, like you say, it's about as limited as the iJail

I like WP8, but would never use it everyday because of one thing... App ecosystem. Apple and Android have all the apps I use on a daily basis. WP isn't even close. So, until/if they can get that whole thing going, no thanks!
Also, yeah, as far as I know, the customization is non existent on WP. I'll stay with a jailbroken iPhone and my soon to be s-off'd One.

Uggggly. Why would anyone want to run W8... but that is just my opinion. It seems that Micro$oft has approached HTC about the possibility of running W8 on their Android phones. Lets hope that HTC, even in their cash strapped state, does not fall into the same temptation that Nokia did.

You won't get good comparisons about wp8 on here. They hate it as much as the iPhone. I ran the hd7 for about a year and really enjoyed it. It was nice to just use a phone without trying to change every design element just because I could. And zone with zone pass was a much nicer program to deal with than iTunes. You could drag media to your phone via your computer and it would transfer automatically when the phone was idle. I gave it up because it was late to the lte game. At this point I'm so far in with the Android ecosystem it would be tough to switch though the Nokia 1020 is sweet.

I started on WinMo 6.5 with the Dash, Dash 3G and Touch Pro 2 and was a fan. At the time, it was the only choice that included wireless sync (contacts, calendars without plugging in! whoa!) and tethering iirc.
I tried iOS briefly on iPod touches and hated it so got on the Android bandwagon early on. I like Android but it really only works for me if I am rooted and I can heavily customize the device and running something like CM or AOKP. Or at least heavily deSensed/deTouchWiz-ed. A year ago, I tried an HTC 8x and I was surprised that I preferred it to Android. Now, I am heading back to Android because the hardware is so much nicer on something like the HTC One. Heck, even the Samsung Galaxy S4 made me jealous (after I rooted it, lowered the DPI setting and had Xposed clean up the mess of a UI it ships with).
I would love it if my HTC One allowed me to run either Android or WP8 in a dual boot fashion. Knowing me, I'd switch back and forth, probably using WP8 while travelling because it seems to have better power management and Android when I need seemingly basic stuff that WP8 still doesn't support (high speed audio playback for example!!!). I doubt that it'll happen.
If HTC does make more WP devices it'll be because MS is making it a no-lose proposition (they can use the same basic devices and MS pays them a bunch to create variants and pays for the marketing of those variants) and without dual boot support which would just be too much of a nightmare to support officially.
Technically, I am sure it's feasible to do this, even with dual boot (just look at what the HD2 has been made to do -- a WinMo 6.5 device that runs Android, even 4.3, WP7/7.5 and with dual boot support) but it'd be bonkers to support unless they end up with a virtualized setup (probably with WP playing host to Android given MS's expertise with running hypervisors, see e.g. XBox One's virtualization features. Then again, why would MS build that?!).
I'd pay good money to get the flexibility to run either OS on something like the One. WP is a more refined, fluid experience than Android. But it just isn't as feature rich. I'd like the option of running either.
