Samsung Software NO Android? - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Source: http://m.intomobile.com/2012/06/18/samsungs-new-ceo-talks-develping-its-own-mobile-software/
Samsung developing its own Sortware and leaving Android success behind? Although I doubt it and this article is probably about TW refresh but the idea of Samsung software will personally keep me away. To me Samsung is a sexy hardware but it's own implementation of TW etc drives me nuts. Say Samsung does abandon Android, I personally will say Goodbye, how about you? Imagine sexy software but no Android... Will you stick with Samsung?
Samsung must be mistaken to have me follow their TW or anything even better.

They've tried this multiple times most recently with Bada...for Samsung Android is just a way to gain money while behind scenes they create a better one or thats what they think

From what I read about the interview the high end phones will still be android and they were improving on tw read the engadget article about this and then click the source

I agree, Samsung makes one sexy piece of hardware. However, I too will part ways if they decide to leave Android for their own OS.

All except moto...I don't find their phones attractive

A lot of manufacturers seem to have "Apple Envy". They see what Apple did with the iPhone and think they can re-produce it. It takes someone really good at stealing stuff and reselling it as your own to be Apple. I don't think many other companies could do it.
Or, you could go the Microsoft route and just license the hell out of everything.

Samsung is a beast.....everything in my house is Samsung ... If they wanna leave Android and do their own thing...I say go for it, they been setting back watching how Android been doin things and taking things over..now its time for Samsung to bring out the guns and strike...They have been planning this for a while...it was just a matter of time

I'm not a fan of TW either but its easy to get rid of...some UI out that isn't that easy and will still run in the background if you like it or not.....Samsung pushes the button of technology.....smart TV (hello Samsung), blue led fridge, the do everything washer/dryer....lol...I know the need to work on the software portion....but I not gonna drop them cuz they wanna do it all themselves...I'm sure you can root it and someone will figure out to put the market back on and stuff just like they did with the Kindle Fire...let em try, you never know they could surprise you

if they do i hope they will still make android phones. i personally like the match with samsung and android. makes me even more of a fan boy i suppose, but i guess im just a android guy, i just think samsung is the only competitor big enough for apple. plus i love the fact that when i pull out my samsung phone around apple people they start bashing me, then i let them know a little info, they shut up real quick. but i hope they dont move all phones over to whatever theyre gonna call this os.

If it will be better than Android, why not?

Look at what's happened in the past 6 months alone:
1) Google closed on Motorola Mobility (right here in my backyard) - meaning Motorola is out of the mobile biz if I understand correctly. To do it Google had to promise to keep Android open for 5 more years... and I doubt it will be much longer than that for newer versions.
2) Microsoft is launching their own tablet - a big shift in things because they're adopting the idea that controlling the hw and sw sides will end up with a better product - and in general is right (so long as the dev support is there)
So if this is the model being taken - give a generic version (at a fee) for manufacturers who want it but keep the best completely in house - then Samsung has 5 years to really work on that before they'd have to even think about departing from Android on any devices. My guess is this would be on low end devices first to potentially avoid licensing fees for Android in the future - but time will tell.
But hey, this is all speculation and a lot changes every year - I'll just wait and see for now.

i hope android never goes close and restricted

Whole new OS?
Of course we'd all ditch it.
If it's not open-source.
Unless they can unveil it with some sort of 'cant-live-without' features package.

I don't see another OS getting huge developer support.
I'm sure the Galaxy name will help them sell but once consumers learn it doesn't have all the same apps it will flop.

If Samsung doesn't care about customers, how can it hope to keep them? | The Verge
The Galaxy S is only a year old and already abandoned. I am going with the fruit phone next time, at least I know apple will update my phone for years after the sale. And real updates, not bug fixes.

Go get your iphone then.
If you have the mindset that allows one piece of sensationalist journalism to sway you that much, then that's probably just the phone for you.
You see, the thing is:
The author of the article in the OP is doing it wrong:
He completely glosses over the idea that Samsung actually has this right, for the average user:
The Galaxy S DOESN'T have the RAM or the resources to properly run ICS.
Why in the world would Samsung want to push an update to a device that it's just going to run poorly on? (ESPECIALLY to a device with that many millions of users).
Actually, I'm a little disappointed in The Verge for allowing such an awfully-written article to be posted, as far as the one-sidedness of it goes. They've become one of my favorite places on the web to go to for my tech news, but it's definitely NOT because of articles like this.

They might have the same specs, but the Galaxy S comes with TouchWiz. The Nexus S doesn't. Difference explained?
Don't be surprised that the developer version of a phone gets the updates and the mass-sold consumer version with branding and skins does not, however inconvenient.
Apart from that, they have supported it for about 19 months now through 3 major releases, instead of their promise of 18 months and a minimum of 1 major release.
So he bought the phone with Eclair, it got an upgrade to Froyo and another upgrade to Gingerbread and he's *****ing that he wont get ICS?! The Galaxy S has already had TWO major OS updates, do people really expect these things to get every major update as long as they own the device? The sense of entitlement that some people seem to have is absolutely rediculous.

Fanboyism?
WTF.
Look at the facts, and maybe you'll understand...
(I'll take this slowly, but try to keep up.)
I know that the Galaxy S and the Nexus S have the same specs:
That's common knowledge.
But:
The Nexus S doesn't have to run Touchwiz, hence the update.
The Galaxy S would HAVE to run Touchwiz, so it would have to also be included in any update, because THAT'S WHAT 10+ MILLION AVERAGE USERS WOULD EXPECT TO SEE, THE SAME UI THEY HAD THE DAY BEFORE. (sorry for the Allcaps, but it's just frustrating to me that someone doesn't understand this.)
Touchwiz, in an update with ICS, would BARELY fit:
It might run, but users would quickly get low storage space messages, and memory-issue crashes.

How, by giving you updates that your phone can handle?
You applaud them for that, yet you think it's a bad thing when a company (Samsung) wouldn't send an update to a device that COULDN'T properly handle one?
Apple's way around the issue is to rarely update their hardware, so that it can handle any update they throw at it for 2+ years.
Samsung (and the major Android manufacturers in general) deals with it by continuously pushing the envelope by releasing cutting-edge hardware, and then updating software to the devices that can handle it.
Which would you rather have? 2 year old hardware, and last year's updates, or tomorrow's hardware and tomorrow's updates?

Whatever tips your balance off course, for many it would be because of other things but at least this is honest reasoning.
Shouting that Samsung lied to costumers and mistreats them is just stupid and shows no understanding of market mechanisms, but displays tunnelvision instead.
I understand it sucks, having had an Omnia2 before my Galaxy S2, but it was known beforehand that the updatecycle would stop somewhere at the end of 2011, as it is to end at Q3/Q4-2012 for the Galaxy S2. By that time the same discussion will start, this time about the Galaxy Nexus, with the same stupid arguments, petitions and tears.

This is the crux of the whole thing:
I would never, in my worst "phone-geek" nightmare, dream of owning the same device for 3 years, I don't care which phone it was.
That's an eternity in terms of technological advances, and if that's what you're looking for: a phone that'll still be updated (software-wise) for 3 years, then an iphone is EXACTLY what you need.
I'd rather have a hole in my head than to be stuck with ANY phone for that long.

If Samsung didn't honestly care for it's customers people would have never gotten an update at all.
It's entertaining that you're white knighting yourself with the supposed honor of refusing to buy Sansung devices because of them no longer supporting year-old hardware.
Things move fast, the employees that make the updates at Samsung don't have any obligation to continue to work on old hardware.
The Evo Shift isn't getting ICS and it released after the Galaxy S line. Is HTC suddenly not carrying for its customers?
Why, exactly do you care?
Your device WILL get ICS and the chances are you are rooted and even if it didn't [get ICS] some developer(s) is/are working on it.
Hell, I'm sure that rooted Galaxy S users will get it.
Enjoy getting gimped updates with features cut out once your apple device is no longer the top-of-their-line.
There is absolutely no reason for people with a device that old to expect ICS via their manufacturer.
You're basically saying that Samsung should update phones that it shouldn't really be on to it, providing a lackluster User experience.
The users would get all sorts of issues with it and no amount of features would change the fact that some of the issues would push that customer away from that manufacturer.

So sorry that Android's updates are taking much bigger steps than IOS' updates.
I believe the thing that the OP doesn't take into account is that even apple phones usually become to slow for the latest and greatest iOS version after 18 months to 2 years. In which case, you are back at square one if you had bought any number of android phones.
Regardless, 6 in one hand, half a dozen in the other.

Yea....can't groove with that GUI
I wouldn't switch over from Android and it would be hard to make the switch even if something better came out.
Mostly it's because of apps. I think Apps should go the way of blu-ray. If you buy the blu-ray, you get the DVD and the Digital Download as well.
Fact is I was one of the owners of the Palm Pre... I also own an iPod Touch.
There are certain apps that I paid for on my iPod, my Palm Pre, and now on my Android. I wouldn't switch platforms a this point just because of the sheer investment I have made in Apps for the Android.... It's a shame.
Same way I thought the Zune was great, but I already had such an investment with my Bose Sound Dock and all sorts of other iPod only connections and cables that I just stayed with Apple.
I can totally see this happening. This is the kind of crap I would expect them to do.
Please god give the nexus on sprint soon. This is Samsung at its best.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk
I happened to love the Palm Pre at the time. The hardware was horrible but the software was great.
I also have a big investment in apps now Andriod. If they go their own way with an OS hopefully they will make it able to accept Android apps. It would be a smart move.
Personally I think it is a little late in the smartphone game to bring in a new OS with no app library. App developers will be reluctant to make apps for a new OS.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
I think Samsung might use Tizen for some of their devices but as this OS is far from perfect I think Samsung won't switch Galaxy S3 to it. Instead they could test it on lower level devices and maybe if the system is ready they could pre-install it on next years Galaxy flagship device.
For me this sounds more like marketing campaign for Tizen or just stupid guess
Found more information about release date: http://samsunggalaxys3review.net/samsung-galaxy-s3-release-date/
If Samsung drops Android on Galaxy S3 then I would choose another phone that does have Android.
Basically Motorola or HTC would step up and produce a nice Android phone that others would go to. The whole reason why Samsung Galaxy S II did well was mainly because of good hardware, a version for every carrier, and Android.

I know it feels like that...but it's not. It's still early into the smartphone game....very very early. Compared to the 35 years of the "PC Game" a lot of things can happen between now and then....even though I don't they will you can't rule that possibility out, lol.
I think they are going to release it with android. Samsung is the #1 android manufacturer in the world and why would a company which only purpose is to make money change up their extremely successful formula. Why would they risk billions of dollars to introduce a new OS into the U.S.? If it ain't broke don't fix it.
If they think they can make a play to be their own ecosystem, why wouldn't they?
Sticking with android means being a commodity hardware player, selling phones at low margins while google gets 30% of app revenue from market.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
But don't you think they might try that out on less prominent phones first. Kind of test the waters and see if it will work. I just don't see them dumping a new operating system on their flagship phone. The one that put them on the map in the cell phone markets. It seems like jumping off a cliff and hoping you have wings.

Exactly, the worst that can happen is that their idea fails, they go back to the drawing board & either improve on it or fall back to what was previously working (Android), though I highly doubt they'll abandon Android all together.
Only time will tell. Honestly I'd like to see what it's all about. If the os is highly customizable, functional & not too restrictive, then good, it may turn out to be a winner.
Samsung did get offered incentives from the south Korean government to work on an in house os. I read an article from Engadget months ago explaining how the south Koreans feel with android they depend on the west too much. With androids guess manufacturers are trying to find ways to distinguish their products from the rest.
I personally feel it would be a mistake to move from the android ecosystem once android starts to really mature. But, once again from Engadget, I read an interview of a top exec from Samsung saying that the tizen chose is not definite.

Apple is perfect position.

OK first off I'm not an apple fanboy or any fanboy for that matter I love tech and gadgets. Second it is a sad day for many people like me because I am tied to sprint for life probably mainly because of price and unlimited data. (That's not the sad part). So with that said I am tied to their phones and right now with the current phones and android it is a sad cluster f$%#. ICS is great just on its own but Sammy and HTC don't care. Updates come like whenever, maybe 8 months later to a year maybe never.
All future phones on sprint are a letdown at this point sg3, evo one, galaxy nexus is great but no lte. Android is just a hot mess I don't even know the point of pure Google of only 1 percent actually have it.
Apple is in perfect position because if the iPhone 5 is bigger and beautiful and powerful its a wrap. Once lte is up I can't find any reason to stay with Android or anything other. Google paved the way for apple to crush them because they have no standards. I have used android pretty intensely and its just all over the place. A bigger retina better battery iPhone will be a killer. And who knows what IOS 6 will be.
I know many of you will flame but if you can't understand at least one point then you are blind. I'm not bashing Android I love ics and wish I had it running perfect on my phone.

How bout we have at least one thread that doesn't resort to arguing and name calling? Arguing is going to happen, I understand that, but try doing it in an adult manner.
If not, I can shut this one down also.

I don't quite see how android is a mess? Just because Samsung has touchwiz and HTC has Sense? You do realize that both companies do provide updates to their phones right? Yes, I realize the move from Froyo -> Gingerbread -> ICS isn't fast...but that's copmarable to IOS 3 -> 4 -> 5 (which is also about once a year). The minor updates in betweens are generally fixes for things, and a lot have been purely to patch exploits by jailbreakers which further locks the phone down. Officially our phones have recieved 2 updates, and we're waiting on the official 3rd to move to ICS.
The new iPhone will be a hit...because it is an iPhone, simple as that. The bigger size will attract some more people, but seeing how the 4S was a lackluster upgrade and it was Apple's top selling phone, crushing any android phone's sale. This next one will do the same. Personally, and I'm guessing for many on XDA who enjoy modding the crap out of their phones, iPhones aren't really an option...especially the way it is now making jailbreak exploits even harder to come by.
Lets all have a drink

Damn, people are upset since the specs were released! Part that caught my eye is "no LTE." I thought the GNex was the first phone that had it?

Lol'd.
You don't see how android is a mess. First what is android to most people you will get a 100 different answers.
Ics has on screen buttons really not on Sammy and HTC phones.
How many versions of Android are there running now on phones.
Somebody makes a game or app works/tested on some phones not working for many but you can still buy it even though it doesn't work.
I could go on

Well because if speak any truth that's anti android we all know how that ends up. I guess some of you are happy about the eco one and sg3 I thought they were both a letdown

I think you're passing judgement on them before giving them a try. Their specs have been released, but you haven't held onto them yet. I don't think the next iPhone will be a mind blower either, it'll probably be similar to the specifications of the EVO LTE or SGSIII.
The SGS2 is definitely my kind of phone, the only thing I'll need is LTE when it comes to my area. We'll see how it goes.

my car uses gas but i can still buy diesel........people have pc's and buy games that they cant play on it because of hardware issues, just like phones, its YOUR responsibility to do a little research on if something can/will/properly run on your device.
I'm going to go ahead and shut this one down. Seems like a troll thread to me.
There is a place in the android general section that would better suit this discussion.

Google cutting out the Middleman (Wireless Carriers)

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB10001424052702304371504577406511931421118.html
A great read. Perhaps this is Google trying to take back the reigns of the Android OS and preventing wireless carriers from garnering enough power over the device and the way they intend to run the OS on such devices. What is fairly interesting at the moment is that Jelly Bean is already being talked about for a November release and our device has yet to receive ICS. With that said, I can see Google trying to put a stop to this pattern of diligent practice. It is fairly obvious that Google is sick and tired of seeing good devices wait for updates because carriers are too busy cooking up an OS that does fairly well without the bloat they put in it. That is their clear goal....to cut out the middle man and keep android os pure as it was intended to be in the first place....So to do that that they are now going to release the new versions of it's Android OS to different devices makers in a bid to lower the carriers power by encouraging device makers to sell their phones directly to consumers rather than through a carrier. I think this is great news because it prevents a device much like our beloved GS2 from being left behind and allows future devices to be on par and updated much quicker without the need of a carrier approval. Definitely the right way to go Google. This is a huge step forward. Good Job Google INC.
This is great news. Google should have done this a long time ago.
This should have started at 2.1!!!

You have to admit that even though it sucks it is better than it was a couple years ago.

This is what I've been saying they need to do for a long time. You can be damn sure if they release 10 devices from the cutting edge to budget phones, this "nexus series" will sell like hotcakes once people figure out these phones are so much better. Maybe then the manufacturers and carriers when they start losing money on phone sales (and 2yr lock-ins) will figure out they need to STOP ****ING TAKING A BLOAT DUMP ON ANDROID PHONES...
If they price it like the Galaxy Nexus they just started selling (which is only $150ish more than our phone, the current top-of-the-line on T-mo) and word gets out on how much you can save by not being chained up for two years to a data plan you may not neccisarily want...we might actually have something worth pitting against apple sales-wise.
I can't wait!

This is pretty minimal progress because they arent leaning on the manufacturers which is who they should lean on to either get less hardware fragmentation or get them to choose less closed sheet hardware.
I will hold on too this phone till Nov.then get the new nexus.

Yeah, but isn't it true that 'prue nexus' phone doesn't recognize the 1700 band, so you'd be rockin at 3g only?

Google will fail again as last time.

Samsung to move away from android.

This really sucks, I can't see myself owning anything but a Samsung phone.
Thoughts?

Bye samsung, hello android nokia. Lol
POWERED by FROSTY!
Till it is confirmed through Samsung themselves and not Bloomberg or this site or that site, I just can't believe it.
Samsung has always been about working with just about anything they could.
I know of Tizen, but thought that was for lower end phones until they felt confident moving ahead. So if true, then can't see it being as soon as this year.
Crazy if it does happen...hope they don't go the iOS way. If so, sucks!

Its not all bad guys... A new OS mean new things to learn and a new experience to be had. I believed that the reason for the move is to provide the user with a better experience via the hardware they provide. I for one am willing to give them the chance to prove what they can do on their own.

Sounds good but I found my new love. Used to be htc until they went to no removable battery or sdcard. Idk if the note 2 is like that but hey I'm sure every new os will look like one another lol
I'm fairly skeptical, the GS3 has been an outstanding success for Samsung, absolutely dominating Android phone sales. I have trouble believing they would abandon Android completely for their own proprietary smartphone OS. They have the benefit of seeing the demise of RIM and the snails pace growth of Windows Phone to show them that the market can't accommodate another OS.
Just like a year and a half ago they "were" gonna drop android and revamp BADA too much money making with android why leave it. .
Can't say that I believe it either.
Android has made their mobile division the success that it is today.

If this is true i quit life.
https://www.tizen.org/about
The article says they'd use "Tizen" instead, which sounds like it's more geared towards tv's and other "smart" devices, which would let them have a unified experience between people's tv's and phones. but with the lack of a fully fleshed out app marketplace, i think samsung would be retarded to go that route. seems like a far fetched suggestion to me. better to put android in your tv than your tv on your phone...
I really hope they don't, The S3 is my fifth smartphone, I started with the huawei ascend, optimus v, motorola triumph, then the S2 and S3. I cannot see myself going to htc, Motorola, or any other company. I was planning on rocking the Galaxy S25 in 20 years lol

Alright I wouldn't go as far as getting an iphone, but it would be hard to choose any other Android to replace the samsung lineup. Especially since a lot of phones are coming without ext sd and non removable battery.

but they make so much money of Android, they can test out their abandoned OS with the money they got. Still, If they leave Android and fail they come back, but not the consumer.
