When we were on a trip I borrowed my friend's HTC One X charger to charge my CG and it had a faster charging time. After having a talk i realized that the One X charger has 1A output current while the original CG charger only has 0.7A. I Googled and found that some guys said the larger the input current, the faster your charging time is. So if I keep using a 1A charger for my CG, will it damage my battery ?
I'm using Android 4.2.2 on Roobox ROM

I'm using the chargers with higher current all the time - had no issues with it. The phone charger, the laptop charger - no issues at all.
Your device should not be able to draw more current than it could handle. However, the charger won't get overheated and the charge may go faster.

Hi All,
Was wondering if anyone knows the maximum current the SGS2 can draw for charging purposes. I had a look at the wall charger provided with it, and it's 0.7a; it takes forever (my opinion) to charge compared to my last phone. Just wondering if it is worth my while investing in a more powerful charger.

Also, at the start of the SGS2 charging cycle, my wall-plug power meter reads 5.1 W.
5.1 is what the adapter is pulling. All of that isn't getting to the phone. Funny thing for my is the phone charges faster off my blackberry 0.75a charger then it does off my Galaxy I 1a charger.

Someone in another thread mentioned seeing something in the source code about the phone drawing at most 650 mA (instead of a more typical 1000 mA) during charging. If that's the case, a more powerful charger by itself won't help; you'd also need a custom ROM that doesn't limit the charge current.
Does anyone know why Samsung would limit the charge current?

Speculation is that its a heat related problem. Don't want to pull a Sony and have the batteries explode on people... (but again, that's speculation)

I also heard that a smaller charging current extends the Li-ion battery's lifetime, even though I'd prefer quicker charging as the battery can be replaced with ease.
I second that. I tried it today with a 1A car charger (USB cig. plug) can't say it made a difference on speed of charge compared to wall one.
Just received my SGSII and the charging is extremely slow. 3+ hours = about 500 mAh, on a 1A wall charger. Never had such a slow charging smartphone before
To change i9100 charging current you have to short r529 or r531
Current limit will change to 1000mA
You can use 2A charger and phone will charge only with 650mA current
But after this short one of those resistors current limit will change to 1A
I use it on my phone and all is fine. Current after change is measured.

I have the suspicion, that my noname charger is not recognized properly and it only charges with USB current (450mA).

1000mA is more likely the maximum current that the phone is expected to drain from the battery.
It is not the battery charging current, which is presumably equal to the mentioned 650mA, since the 1650mAh battery charges in about 4 hours.
If the charging current was actually 1000mA, then the 1650mA battery it would charge in 2 hours or so, but as we all know, it is not so, even with a 2A charger.

The charging time depends on the Charger and Rom i use, i havent figured out for what reason.
Sometimes the SGS2 is charged in approx. 1 hour and with other Roms the charging time may take up to 3h.

Definately 650ma, IF the phone detects an High current USB port, otherwise it falls back to lousy 400ma.
You can trick into 650ma always: take a usb cable, cut from the PC plug side the TX/RX cables, on the other side short them on PHONE plug side these two cables.
Phone will now always go into "AC charging mode". Don't worry (too much) for your USB ports, they can all well 1000ma, and the one that cannot will report "high current detected, port disable".

In the meantime I got inspired by some threads in which people claimed that 2A (amp) charger will make it faster to charge up my note then original 1A charger. I bought original Samsung 2A charger for Samsung galaxy tab and tried that out and I must say that during the first week or two the charging time decreased from around 2.5 - 3 hours into something around 1h 40-50 min.
Later on everything returned to standard 3 hours though, charging with 2A charger is almost identical to 1A charger so from my experience there is no added value with this approach (unless ICS will make a change, or some custom rom).
For anyone interested I enclosed picture where in the top row you may see charging with 1A charger after 1h50min, 2h40min (both just random pics), then when this app (https://market.android.com/details?id=net.whph.android.battery) said it is 100% and the last picture is when galaxy note (Android) system said it is 100% (green battery icon). In the bottom row there is the same scenario with 2A charger. I am on the stock rom 2.6.35.7-N7000XXKKA.
Im not sure but I think you need a kernel that allows more than 1A charging for the 2A charger to work.

I guess so, what makes me slightly uncertain is that initially, charging time was around 2 hours ...
This is an interesting thread. I'd like to get more information about 2A chargers and whether they really make a difference.
Also I heard that when plugged to a TV (using the MHL cable) the phone may actually consume the battery more, even when plugged to the charger simultaneously. therefore if 2A chargers charge faster, it may also solve this problem.

I actually have both, micro USB to USB and micro USB to MHL cables. Wasn't able to test them for a longer time as they sometimes work and sometimes don't, especially mhl cable shows videos for like 30 seconds and then there is a lost signal message on my TV, then it wakes up, then it is gone again ... I could fiddle wit it, but will rather wait for ICS upgrade and then will return to it again.

I am using the iPhone charger. It is a 2A and so far I see an improvement in the battery life. With the original charger (and BB one) the battery reading was 2100mAh . Now is 2600mAh. I don't know why or how.
Also I see a sightly improvement in how the battery lasts for normal use. I get around 18hours

What we need is someone with 2 notes with dead batteries and plug the original charger 1a on one and a 2a charger on the other and see which one gets fully charged first! Maybe its me but I can definitely see a difference between the original and the one I'm using (playbook charger 1.8a)

I did it, and while not with 2 notes side by side, you can have a look at the pictures at the 1st post, the time and charging rate shows its pretty same on the stock rom whether you use 1A or 2A charger. (Although it was very different first one or two weeks, after that battery get used to 2A charger and charging is as slow as with 1A ...)

How did you measure the current in mAh or what app did you use? Thanks.
My bad. I am using the iPad chargers. not iPhone . Those are 2A. To verify I am using battery pro monitor.

SGN stock batt with ipad charger?
Hi, I see some of you are using 2A/ipad charger to charge you SGN. My question is, will there be any side effects on that could harm the stock batt in short or long run?
FYI, atm, I have an ipad charger for home and car and i intend to just use the same charger to charge all devices including my SGN. Im not looking for a fast charging option, but just a hassle free and conveniences.

No harm as long as the volatage output from your charger is 5v. This is what pushes the current to ur device. Higher it goes more it pushes.
However the current that the charger provides decides how fast it can charge. This will also depend on the device. If the device is manufactured to charge at 1 amp and u use a 2 amp charger then it will only use 1amp. If however u use a 750mah charger it can only use 750mah and charge slowly.

Hi everyone i purchased new One X.
My brother has an LG P500.
They both have the same micro usb pin chargers.
Can i Use them interchangeably?
The P500 has output rating 5 V and .7 amps
while the One X has 5 V and 1 amps.
Its just that this would help me keep one charger safe in case when other one dies.
Obviously i wont use if there is some technical incompatibility b/w the ratings

You can use it for charging yes.. It will charge slower though.
You could get some messages saying there is not enough current on the charger to keep the phone powered and charging at the same time.
This could happen when doing energy-intensive tasks with multi-core utilization.
Just for recharging, it shouldn't be a problem.
HTC say to use only their official chargers but generally you're fine to use any USB charger that follows the Battery Charging Specification and has the same voltage and is similar or better in current capacity. The statement to only use HTC chargers it just to cover HTC if you do decide to plug it into an off spec charger which damages the phone.
I use HP Touchpad chargers ([email protected]) as they're just generic USB chargers and I've got several spares. The phone is perfectly happy charging from it.

All manufacturers say that. But i always use whatever charger i have (nokia, sams ng etc). I just avoid using cheap chargers
Is it safe to use a 2.1a 5v usb charger with the hox?
Will it speed the charging? (Stock charger takes 4 hours to charge!!)

It's safe, but it won't speed it up.
so 4 hours charge is normal? (With the stock charger)
I dunno, never timed it, but charging a LiPoly battery faster than that can shorten its life, and since its not removable, that would be a pain.

One additional thing. Learned that the hard way.
Bought a HTC car charger. HTC supplied cable to that HTC car charger. Original HTC car charger on this charger sucked... despite showing AC charging
So look first when you charge if it says USB charging or AC. And then check how long it does to charger. Change the cable to the original one supplied with the phone if it's more as on that original stock charger

Well charging doesn't have 100% efficiency so a 1a charger won't charge at 1a, so a higher charger means you should get to the 1a limit but it's not going to reduce charging times enough to notice.

A charger rated at output of 1A should be capable of outputting at 1A. Of course, it will draw a little more power from the input than it provides to the output.
When charging, during the first phase (constant current) the maximum current draw is typically around 1A, for up to about an hour, then it drops off quite quickly when it moves to the second phase of constant voltage.
i am thinking about if my E975 is limited when it comes to how many amps it can charge with bcs i recently brought a 2A charger also tried it out on my Google Nexus 7 2013 and i don't feel like it charges that much faster then my original LG charger with a 3meter flat OEM kable.
the charger i brought is said to charge with 2A while the original LG is only 1.2A shouldn't i be feeling a difference?

No, you shouldn't. You can plug it into a 10 Amp charger, but the phone will only draw the amount it needs. Remember, it's not the charger pushing the current to the phone, it's the phone pulling it from the charger. The charging current is determined by the phone - each Li-Ion or Li-Po battery has a controller curcuit. The important thing is for a charger to be able to provide what a device wants to draw - otherwise, it would charge slowly, or not at all. So, a charger should be rated for not less than X Amp. More amp rating won't hurt, but it won't increase the actual current...
oh this is very useful. I also had the same question.
mine came with a 750mA (.75A) charger. As I left my charger at home during the holidays, I had to make due with one that I bought from a nearby tech store. I was very happy with the charger that I bought as it charges my phone really fast. I found out that my new charger was also a 2A model.
so I guess, in my experience, I noticed a big improvement in charging speeds comparing the 750mA with the new 2A charger. But I guess coming from a 1.2A charger, it only makes little difference.
