Attention defy users(water resistant thing)

I want to attention all the defy users about the water damage that can be done at our phone
I tested it today at a pool i even keeped the finger over the eapiece filme like 30 secons under water not even 1 meter deep and suprise when i tryed to call the person heard me but i heard just beep beep puk puk )
Anyway i was lucky enough to roll over it a dry towel and after a hour it was working normaly )
I think words are in vain i was scared as hell ) now i know that our defyes arent made to be used near watter
In one sentence DO NOT TRY THE WATTERPROFFNES OF THE DEFY YOU MIGHT BE DISSAPOINTED

I don't really wanna try to throw my Defy into any kind of liquid.
I know it's said to be waterproof, but seriously that little speaker doesn't look very robust to me... I know there are a lot of videos on youtube that show the defy in swimmingpools and stuff, but I'm not sure if that's so good for the device in the long run.
I just don't wanna ruin my 280 bucks device just for fun.

I forget where I read this but apparently, after using the Defy underwater or in water, you need to dry it out for at least 1 and 1/2 hours before using it normally.
I believe this is to ensure that the earpiece doesn't malfunction as it is the only part that isn't covered by anything water-proof, and for obvious reasons...

According to a review I recently read on Engadget, the battery door has a latch that one can sometimes lock improperly, thereby leaving a gap through which water can get in.

i wanna try it also.. but my concern is the mini usb port where we occasionally charge the phone, mine is i think loosen... is it mine only?
btw, it is water-resistant not waterproof..

The Defy is IP67 certified.
That means:
(1) No ingress of dust; complete protection against contact.
(2) Ingress of water in harmful quantity shall not be possible when the enclosure is immersed in water under defined conditions of pressure and time (Test duration: 30 minutes, Immersion at depth of 1m).
So it is waterproof for 30 minutes to a depth of 1m / 3ft.
Also, since the 30 minute, 1 meter specification is based on pressure, then the phone can be taken deeper for shorter durations. For example, it can most likely withstand a depth of 10 feet for 5 minutes.

I dip my defy in a glass of water every night when i go to sleep near to my bed.
In the mornig, when i wake up, i pull out the phone and i works perfectly.
Very water resistant!

well i check my lock every time i dont use it underwater anyway i wanted justnto test it and the test scared the crap out of me ) i think that this shoud be a sticky for all new defy users

same here but i already did some water test . If water gets in then usb port or 3.5 mm will be dead/ shorted but i think that the phone will work just fine (same as motherboards in PCs).

My friends always ask me to put in water, but I say to search video on youtube !

MY previous Defy's battery cover latch moved very easily which resulted in my accidentally swiping it while underwater and the cover fell off!! It died and my new one has a better latch, so beware!

I couldn't resist and tried soon after purchase. Apparently no demage was done.
I no longer put defy under water now with excitement gone, but still wash it with soap and tap water from time to time.

First time i tried to put it under water, the phone suddenly rebooted...guess i'm not gonna try again...

Wet defy (how obvious)

Yo guys!
I just was on vacation and my defy fell in the swimming pool.
So i got it out and it still worked only a red led appeared. After 10 minutes the screen turned off. So i put my defy in rise but it isn't working. Now when I am back I opened my defy and put it in a dry place but when I put the battery back the screen wont start up and I am getting a red light. Still I am 100% sure the motherboard works fine because it starts up and I see the 2nd init bootloader led flashing from blue to green. So does anybody know what I should clean or look at. Otherwise i will flash a stock froyo rom and do a cash wipe/factory reset and sent it to Motorola.

OK i got some things straight. I opened my defy and found some things.

The screen is working!! but the back-light isn't so i cant see **** but its boots up and if i look closely MIUI started up fine. So i guess i should buy a new screen or fix it somehow. The red light is a bug I guess of the battery. I looked a lot on the Internet for the red light and found that a lot of phones show a red led when the battery is broken or something so I will test it at a shop. I guess i cant use my warranty because my case looks awful so i will fix it my self.

maybe check if your battery is not completely discharged accidentaly.
I have also heard that the drying process should last a day or more.

Yea I know but I will wait an other day. Maybe there are just some shortcuts why the screen isn't starting up because it doesn't look damaged at all.

It look like the device is partially damaged when it decided to jump into the pool..
You should had immediately pull out the battery and check throughout of water getting in the device, and let it dry first before your attempting to reboot it.

Funny thing is I did. It was dry but after some minutes vapor appeared between the screen and the screen case. then the same vapor appeared by the camera and ... screen turns off.

Officially (according to IP67) the defy is water resistant up to 1 meteres do not know how deep the pool was? If you do not have warranty anymore you could open it up and let it dry in seperate parts. But if there is vapour under the screen and camera lens i'm affraid more damage is done....

I did it...
Today i took my defy for a little swim, took it under no more than 10 inches of water, pool, while recording a video to see how it goes, when i got it out after 40 secs, the pone kept recording but when i touch to stop recording the phone started vibrating like if i was pressing any of buttons (home, menu, back and search) and then froze i got scared so i pulled the battery and check for water, but i saw that the lens got moisture so i quickly took it to a bowl with uncook rice and left it there for 3 hours. i then checked it and all the moisture was gone.
When i turned it on it booted like if it didn't had any OS so i left it alone and a while later it loaded fine, but then i noticed the moisture was back on the lens cover, took it back to a new bowl with rice, and it has been there for another 3 hours now but the moisture is showing in te screen also.
What do you guys recomend me to do?
Does the waranty should cover any damage?
P.S: sorry for such a long "Answer" to the thread, but i'm worried and didn't want to spam by opening a new one.

1. i remove the battery
2. letting it open
3. put it in my desktop where the hot air is coming out
4. i waited for about an hour

Take note. if your defy is already old, dont deep it in water

mine allso got wet, and seems that now work's fine but it has no backlight to the lcd and to the soft keys. anybody solved this problem? thx!

Don't thing Rice is going to do more then a paper towel... It doesn't suck any liquid out of gaps or anything. You can try the little ball's that come with clothing. They suck the water out the air so that the water in the phone can vaporize in the air.
But the one's that come with the things you buy will most likely already be saturated.
The best way is to use rubbing alcohol (as high percentage as possible). The alcohol displaces the water but does vaporizes is normal conditions. So you can just submerge your phone in alcohol (with no battery, sim and sd-card ofc. and best only the logic board) and let it dry for some time. This before you try to put it on. This also cleans out most of the salt and sand as this damages you board over time.

Sweat Damage

Hi,
I know there is a lot of information on the Internet about Water Damage, but i can't seem to find out what's going with my device.
Here's what happened: i went for a run with my phone stuck to my arm by a rubber band. When i got home i found that the sweat of my arm had damaged the phone: it didn't want to turn on and the water damage stickers are red. I dried the sweat of the back of the phone with a towel (it wasn't much) and i was able to turn it up for an hour or two and it seemed fined, only the battery indicator was crazy (exclamation mark). I wasn't able to charge my battery as well. The indicator led is crazy as well (when i try to charge my battery it blinks orange, green and so on).
The phone itself seems fine is the battery that cannot charge and seems damaged causing the phone to turn off frequently. What do you think? Should a buy a new battery or a new phone?
(sorry for my bad english)

1: don't run with the phone. Two: try with another battery, the battery seems broken.

If phone is still damp put it in a bowl of dry rice, it will remove any excess moisture.

That phone is not designed to be used that way, you should use an external casing that's not connected to your skin and as such less likely to be sweat damaged. (i.e.: belt clip of sort).
The suggestion to place into a jar of rice for a day or two is typically a good way to draw out any moisture, the main thing you DO NOT want to do is attempt to power it on or charge while humidity still exists inside the device.

I bought a new battery and the phone works just fine, only the old battery was damaged. Thanks for the help.

This is more of a question about sweat
I didn't want to make another thread about sweat damage, so i figured I might as well ask here. I have a problem where it seem that my touch screen collects moisture inside my pants pocket. One time at the mall i stood watching a football game for like an hour, when i took out my phone the screen was completely soaked like i gave it a good spray with a spray bottle. I think the problem is that the phone is warm so it causes me to sweat more? Funny thing is I feel warm but it doesn't seem like i was sweating, yet screen still collect alot of moisture.
The phone is working fine, no sign of any water related damage and that incident been about 2 weeks ago. My real question is, anyone got any recommendation as to how to carry my phone to prevent any further water exposure?

[Q] One X screen problem

So yesterday me and my friends went near a lake and had a little bit of alcohol,so i fell into the water with the phone in my pocket turned of.
But later when the phone dried,i turned it on and it was all working but the screen brightnes is not adjustable,now can anibody advise me what to do

First of all that's funny! Silly things happen when we are drunk.
I suggest you fully dry your phone out put it in a sack of rice for a few days then see what happens.

It's highly unlikely you managed to get it completely dry in 1 day.

Stick it in a bag of rice for 24 hours and hope for the best.

You could try a factory reset, but strange things happen from water damage.
My old Sony Ericsson worked fine, except for the fact (after I dropped it in a pan of gravy) that the gsm aerial only had a weak signal. Everything else was normal..
Could try silica gel, but there could be corrosion (you can't always even see the corrosion) from minerals/deposits in the water, which is causing a short circuit somewhere, causing the problem.
Unfortunately any water damage automatically (to the repair centers at least) means it's BER (beyond economical repair) so if you can't fix it from it drying out (ideally give it at least 3 days or even more in the rice or silica gel) the only option really is to buy a new one, or claim on insurance if you have cover.

THx for the answer,but unfortunately this phone dosent have a warranty,i think im just gonna buy the screen and then im gonna send it to my nearest reapir center,and yes i can see dried up water under the screen.

i know the feeling! my dhd got wet yesterday in the rain argh! even the battery indicator shows no water damage (to that at least) yet the screen is buggered lol. looks like its been smashed in a way. got it in a tub of rice currently.. hoping it might dry out.
glad it wasnt my hox it happened to anyway

[Q] Splash, Phone in toilet

So my kid reached in my pocket and dropped my phone in the toilet. i pulled it out fast, it didn't completely submerge, it's in a bowl of rice atm, how long should I wait to turn it on to see if my $600 just got flushed down the crapper.

To be safe I'd say a day or two. I've never been that patient though. Get some 90% + alcohol dip the phone in it then put it in rice wait a few hours that's always worked for me

Last time I revived a fully submerged phone it was like three days. I also did the rice and phone bake in the oven. Wouldn't recommend that unless you figure the phone is toast to start with lol but here it is. Glass bowl, submerge phone in rice, bake on lowest setting of oven taking out often to let cool a little, bake time about an hour. Remove battery, sim, and SD card before baking. When done baking pour everything into zip lock bag for two days. You probably think I'm crazy but this worked on my daughters phone after she dove into a pool with it then tried to turn it on while it was still dripping water. This was on a desire z so not sure how our screen will react to that much heat.

I would opt for this method over baking, every oven is different and you run a risk of melting the soldier and causing irreversible damage if it gets too hot. The most important thing about electronic devices getting wet is removing the electrical current ASAP (if possible pull the battery!!!). Other than corrosion, the only problem with water any electronic device has is electrical shorts burning up the circuitry. Once electricity is removed from the equation, alcohol isn't anymore harmful than water, and in fact will evaporate (including the water) much quicker, which in turn reduces the chance of corrosion. That being said, although i am impatient as well i would still give a good day, 24 hours, in a nice rice bath. Just make sure there is no visible liquid before attempting to power on the device, personally i would pull the back cover off and unscrew the back side of the case exposing the main board just to get a better look but not everyone is going to be comfortable with that.

What i did that worked:
Get a ziplock back filled it with rice. Put your phone without Battery, sim, sd card, backplate in the bag with rice. Set the bag with contents on the top of your refrigerator where it is slightly warm, let it sit for 48 hours. Take it out after 48 hrs (it should have all the moisture out of the phone at this point) put the battery, sim, sd, etc back in and fire it up. Cross your fingers at this point

Best bet jar/ bowl of rice,, pull sim sd card put BOTH batt and phone into rice!!! batt has a chip in it, wait for at LEAST 3 days every day shift phone in the rice<<< moves dryer rice closer to phone, after 3 days pull phone out of the rice, THEN grab a can o air, spray air into phone, To see if any water still in phone,, if so 2 more days if not cross fingers put it togather and see if it works,, DO not put in OVEN plastic warps!

Well I'm at work now, it's been over 50 hrs I stuck it in rice, so it'll be like Christmas in October for me when I get home, or not.....

I managed go spill tea on mine, not sure if it leaked through the earphone or home button. Within 2 hours I had driving mode turn on/off randomly and the next day it did the same with usb and now it turns off randomly. To my knkwledge, the water damage indicators havent been tripped, should I take a gamble and take it back to rogers?

Speaker F***ed, headphone jack not working
so the main interface works great but, i'd rather throw it in the garbage now that it always says the headphones are plugged in, and the speaker is all static crackles an ****ty. so does anyone know where I can find and unroot guide for the Rogers GS3?

I cant be certain it fits, but looking at the connectors in the picture it appears to be compatible, and for 9 bucks i would try it personally before i did anything drastic. Not sure how much the shipping would run to Canada but its got to be less than an insurance deductible.

I keep a bag of about 150 or so Dessicant dryer bags in one of those vacuum seal jars, just in case. They are cheap and easy and work better then rice. I would say getting a bag of 200 of them cost me about $20.00 Keeping them in the vac sealed jar keeps them from sucking the moisture out of the air.

Well. I frigged around with pluggin headphones in and making the phone heat up. now it works, just like new, except I know it's been spoiled with poop water!

Make sure to mention that when you eventually sell your phone :laugh:.

So it stopped working again but I found an app that overrides the headphones sensor. It's called toggleheadset2. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.dwalkes.android.toggleheadset2 brilliant!
