Hello. I had a question regarding how I could get the EVO. I wanted to get on a friends account so it would be cheaper for the both of us. Could I do this while still getting the 200$ pricing ? Thanks!
If one of you is off contract you could move to a family share line and get the discounton the device.
You would get the 200 price if you are adding a new line to your friends account. (Either as a second individual line, or by converting both on to one family plan.)
I am off contract. Currently with Verizon and my mother is taking over my number. So it's easy as that eh ? I will look into that, thank you.
Next question: The person I am going to be getting on a plan with lives in Austin, I live in Houston. How would we go about getting a plan together ? Do we both need to physically be at a store to set it up ?

Or... You could always have your friend call customer service or go into a local store and have him notate that he authorizes you as a user to make changes to the account. Make sure he gives your full name and requests that a manager set it as a priority note. Once he does that make sure that YOU have either the pin number or the answer to the security question and you are set to do whatever you need to do in your own local store or via telesales.
You might want to keep your phone number and port it to Sprint. Sprint has a $100 porting credit that you can get, and it'll cut the price of the phone in half. You can then call up Verizon and have them give you a new number when it's all said and done.
It's worth $100. I'm doing the same for AT&T.
I would do that except my old phone was stolen ( Touch Pro 2 ) and I am still on contract with no intent of canceling my plan yet. I had looked into that but I'd need a lot of money to cancel my Verizon plan. Too poor to do it right now.

Have you seen this in writing? Friend wants to port to Sprint, and I heard rumors about this but can't find the details anywhere.
Also, porting your number over from Verizon, terminates the verizon contract immediately. Then you get your ETF bill.

I'm currently on the no longer available SERO plan from sprint. So i'm very reluctant to do anything that changes my plan considering how much i am saving each month.
Right now i have a touch pro2. I'm wondering if i buy an EVO somewhere (other then sprint) and activate it, will sprint know i am using an EVO? I'm not going to pay the extra $10/month considering that extra $10 doesn't get me anything extra that i wouldn't get with any other android phone.
I wasn't sure if the phone itself reports to sprint what phone it is. or if it does, if there's someway to have it report itself as something else.
I believe when they run the esn to activate it, it tells them what type of phone it is. If this is the case, you will have to pay the $10/month.

I believe that if you try to activate an EVO on a SERO plan it will not only charge you the $10/mo premium data fee but it will also require you to change to an Everything * plan. They know what type of phone it is based on the ESN you put in to activate it.

Yes Sprint knows what phone you have because you have a serial number that is registered with sprint. This serial number is what the network uses to allow you to make calls billing etc. Being sprint uses a serial number they know what your phone is not like a sim where you can just switch to another phone. I'd consider paying the everything plan. But the $10 fee really pisses me off since they are basically just making up an excuse to ask for an extra $10 and not giving me anything for the $10 that i wouldn't get with any other android or winmo phone.
How does the ESN # tell them what phone i have? Do they have a database with all the ESN numbers in it? or is the number formatted in a certain way that it containts the model number?
I don't suppose there's any way for me to spoof the esn and have it appear to be the same as my current phone?

HTC could very well give sprint and all of the carriers for which they develope exclusive phones the unique ESN numbers. That's how they would match the ESN to whatever phone you activate.
If anyone finds a way to spoof the ESN, you'd be cutting deeper into the pockets of sprint. They don't care too much that we modders get free tethering because the average person wouldn't go through all of the trouble rooting the phone, not to mention that they know, that we know, we're already paying for the data. It's kinda like Sprint saying, "Ok, you are paying for it anyway, so, if you can do it, go aheadn and root your phone."
Once you start spoofing ESN numbers on a mass scale, and circumventing that $10 surcharge, you can guarantee all of this rooting will be put to an end.

The ESN is only on that one phone, and sprint has a database with all sprint activated ESNs. I have heard, sprint will not activate a phone not in their database. As for the ESN "cloning" in can be done, but i believe its not legal.

FWIW,
As memory serves, Sprint uses both an ESN, and the MAC address to track their customers. It is possible to find, and modify an ESN, and to "spoof" a MAC.
However, other than mention that there are articles in the forums on the ESN (and likely on the MAC). I'll refrain from providing a detailed how-to on the subject - I hope you understand, nothing personal.

I understand what you are saying. but it doesn't change my opinion. I wont pay $10 extra month just because they want it. That $10 doesn't give me anything extra I wouldn't get with any other smart phone. When i asked sprint about it, they told me it was for the enhanced data experience or some crap like that - basically telling me it was due to the larger screen or faster proc - both of which i've already paid for when i buy the phone. And even if they want to argue i MIGHT use more data, so what? I'm already pay for 'unlimited' data. They can charge me $10 when i over the 'unlimited' limit.
They already rip us off with the fees they charge for text messages, so i dont have any sympathy for the cell phone companies. I'm not trying to get something for free. I'm willing to keep paying my monthly bill. I'm just not willing to pay a made up fee that doesn't give me any additional service just because i want a phone, that i'll be paying for, with a bigger screen/fast cpu.

I completely agree with you, man. I was actually thinking about the dumb-ass explanation that Sprint gave me when I asked them why I'd be charged an extra $10 a month. I remember saying something to the salesgirl like, "You know that's all bull****, right."

Just talked my sister that sells phones, she said yes the esn tells sprint the model number...so your only option would be to "clone" the esn of your old phone.
Every single ESN is in sprints database from the beginning of time, notkidding, try and activate a 15 year old phone (ive done it) pulls up model of phone and not only that but history of phone accounts its been on, service thats been performed on the phone previously, if its been reported, lost, stolen, flagged as liquid damage.
Absolutely everything is there and will pull up in accordance to the ESN related t the device.
The absolute only way to do it would be to clone the ESN onto an EVO of a different model and activate it over the phone (in which case some services on your phone may not work properly) but should as long as you select an appropriate device to clone.
Now on to how to clone an ESN...... NO IDEA!! lol sorry, I've never seen it done or come across a situation where it was done, I have however heard of it being done, but its not easy and your going to have to do it yourself, so if your not a programmer, you best take some schooling or give up on the idea (afik)
sprint is cheaper and you get more for your money than any other provider per value and the only major carrier cheaper afik is T-mobile or small company's, time to get over it boys and girls, its 10$ it goes to a good cause, you eat up a crapload of bandwidth and it costs alot of money to expand the network (you want good service right?) if not just goto ATT
oh and it always gives you additional service, it just depends if your in 4g coverage or not, if you go there its available to you, !! I do agree that they should have an option to disable 4G and then you dont have to pay for it.

You're question has been answered. Yes it is bs that I pay an extra 10 for nothing. That 10 is a 4g charge by the way. Don't know why no one mentioned that. But I don't even get 4g in my town. None the less, Sprint still has the cheapest plans for what you get. Trust me I have checked. With my unlimited everything 450 minutes and 4g I can get out the door at 80. Compare that to atts 100. But as was said, cloaning an esn would not be legal and I'm not sure that road of discusssion should be taken. Its a buzz kill that you'd have to upgrade your plan. But you have the choice.

i agree that $10 is $10... what r u honestly gonna do with that extra $10 a month... It wont go very far elsewhere... If ur that worried about money maybe u should switch to Metro or prepaid. Why not use that $10 to enhance ur mobile phone experience? As long as u know the ramifications of cloning esns and that it's a serious FEDERAL crime nd not some silly civil misdemeanor and that there is not a one click method to do it like rooting a phone then have at it but also beware that some services may not work. And yes compare ATT and or Verizon and see how much better of a deal ur getting with sprint even with the $10 4g surcharge... if u don't want to pay it then switch to TMo and buy the nexus one... it's just as good as the EVO without the 4g surcharge...
im not 100% certain how illegal it is to clone an ESN, so long as the the ESN you are cloning is your own.
but im certain its something thats not worth your time either way.
BTW there is as of October 1 a new plan called SERO Premium which will work with the newer phones such as Android phones and Palm Pre. The rate plan is $40 so the EVO would be $50 including the extra fee. Not quite the $30 you're currently paying, but it is cheaper than EPRP and includes Any Mobile, Anytime.
Don't go that route. Definitely illegal, even if its your own esn. As per the fcc;

A cloned cellular telephone is one that has been reprogrammed to transmit the electronic serial number (ESN) and telephone number (MIN) belonging to another (legitimate) cellular telephone. Unscrupulous persons obtain valid ESN/MIN combinations by illegally monitoring the transmissions from the cellular telephones of legitimate subscribers. Each cellular telephone is supposed to have a unique factory-set ESN. After cloning, however, because both cellular telephones have the same ESN/MIN combination, cellular systems cannot distinguish the cloned cellular telephone from the legitimate one.
The Commission considers any knowing use of cellular telephone with an altered ESN to be a violation of the Communications Act (Section 301) and alteration of the ESN in a cellular telephone to be assisting in such violation. The Wireless Telephone Protection Act (Public Law 105-172) was signed into law on April 24, 1998, expanding the prior law to criminalize the use, possession, manufacture or sale of cloning hardware or software. The cellular equipment manufacturing industry has deployed authentication systems that have proven to be a very effective countermeasure to cloning. Authentication supplements the use of the ESN and MIN with a changing encrypted code that can not be obtained by off-the-air monitoring.
And the $10 fee has nothing to do with 4g - its a front facing camera fee. Every new Sprint phone with a front facing camera will have that fee.

Here's an idea. If you do not like paying the cost of the service, do not get the cell phone that requires that. Get something else. That's the luxury you get for having such a great phone.
Also, this should be locked. Anyone that wants to do an illegal activity should just be smacked. The cloning, or manipulation of an esn is a federal offense. 10$ a month/different cell phone > 5 years in jail.
My brother recently ported his Sprint# to google voice and is now with a different carrier. Now he wants to jump on my Sprint family plan. Can I simply start a new line and request to port his GV#(former sprint#)? Does his GV# have to belong to me in order to reinstate service?

He can make his google voice number ring any other number, so he can just get a new one, and no one really needs to know the difference. (Unless I'm missing a key point)
Here's the deal. He wanted to keep his original sprint#, so he ported it to google and canceled his service with ETF waived due to the recent changes. The whole point was to get the S2 for the subsidized price. Something about he has to wait 90 days before he can return to sprint as a new customer to get the discounted phone.
Sooooo, if I were to open a new line on my family plan, I qualify for a new line discount. By porting his number on my new line which he is planning on using, shouldn't that get him a new subsidized phone(S2) with his original sprint number? Not to mention a cheaper monthly bill for everyone.

I use TMobile prepaid and just would like to cancel contract and keep using GS4 on my existing prepaid. I've paid full price for the GS4. So when I receive it I can just cancel my contract and this will not affect any additional fees and/or blacklisting IMEI etc. ?

Go talk to a rep in-store. If you signed up for another plan, while also paying full price for the GS4, you have no contract. You can cancel that plan at any time, you own the device.

Right I just mentioned that for now GS4 is unavailable for prepaid users so I had to subscribe for a contract to order it.

Yeah I looked on the T-Mobile site...no Galaxy S4 for prepaid phones. You have to give them your State ID and SSN to subscribe to a "no contract plan" where you pay the full price of the phone+$70/month. Which is complete bullcrap, because prepaid is the exact same thing, minus being forced to give T-Mobile your State ID/SSN for no reason at all. It's not just T-Mobile either, it's the same way with Sprint. Carriers want as much of your information as they can get; it's not enough you pay for service and the phone anymore.
My issue was much more interesting that anyone here experienced I believe.
When I ordered to my SSN and ID they haven't approve me and I was very wondering why cause I have a great credit score.
Then I contacted credit bureau and find out that my credit score fall <<400 that is unbelievable. Further speech and I realized that I've become a victim of identity theft. Now they confirmed this and recalculated my credit score as it should be. But to save time I had to order GS4 with my girfriend's papers.

The only one thing I have to do is cancel the contract once I receive it tomorrow.
So as I bought phone outright should I call somewhere to cancel it or I can just utilize sim card that I receive?
I'm also a prepaid customer, ended up buying the phone full price. Just hate the fact that even if you're paying the ful price you still have to sign up for service. I hope the only thing we have to do is give them a call and cancel the new line.

I did the same thing. I've been a prepaid customer for a year or so, and I opened a post-paid plan account so I could get the GS4. I also paid for the phone in full. I received it today and I already put my prepaid plan sim card on it. I need to cancel the post-paid plan but I'm not sure if I should do it now or wait. The sim card that came with the phone is still untouched inside the box.

If you paid full price for the phone it's only $50/mo. The other option is to pay $149 up front for the phone, then it's $70/mo.

It's only $50 if you unlimited talk/text+500MB data pool. If you want prepaid with unlimited data it's $70.

Ok I was thinking that it included 2.5 gb data, but that's an extra $10. So it's $60 if you want 2.5 gb or $70 if you want unlimited.

I ordered mine yesterday night am planning to cancel service and use the phone also out of the country. Reading carefully through threads, but cannot find an answer: is the t-mobile S4 sim-locked? If yes and I paid the full price, can I get an unlocking code from t-mobile? Thanks

I dont think it is SIM unlocked.
I havent read yet on any forums if anyone has been able to have it unlocked yet by t-mobile.

Same thing with me. I am trying to decide when to cancel the new line. SIM card is untouched in the box.

I think my experience might rival yours in "interesting"...
I also want to use the S4 on the $30 prepaid plan, and therefore intended to go the route of buying the phone with a $50 line and then cancel it.
I tried to buy online, but it told me I needed to contact a sales rep to complete the order. After starting an online chat with a sales rep, it turned out they required me to pay an additional $400 deposit. (I am pretty sure I never had an incidence with my credit rating so I am not sure why) As I intended to move over to pre-paid, I asked about the policy of how to get back the deposit if I cancel the line before the 1 year is up after which you automatically get back the deposit. After that she started to accuse me of committing fraud! and that t-mobile is not in the business of selling phones. I then asked her how asking about cancellation would violate their new un-carrier marketing and she asked me "where I came up with such a thing as un-carrier". She then simply canceled my order and hung up on me.
I don't think I have ever been accused of committing fraud before for wanting to pay a store over $1000 to buy their product!
I then tried to order again to get a more knowledgeable and competent representative. Unfortunately this time my bank decided t-mobile was "committing fraud" because they thought a $1000 was an unreasonably large amount for a internet transaction.
After the bank unblocked my credit card, because I told them I really do want to spend that much on a phone, I tried it again. Unfortunately on the third time the "account verification department " declined my request without an explanation of why they wouldn't take my $1000.
So I spent about 3 hours on the phone with t-mobile on Monday and I still don't have a S4 I don't think I have ever had a company as adamant to not taking my money as t-mobile. Now I'll have to wait till the 15th before I can try and buy it in a store
Does anyone know what might have gone wrong, or how to convince t-mobile to sell me a phone?

That's horrible. The reps are obviously just confused with the whole new setup. Every rep I talk to gives me a different story on how/when my classic plan will convert over to the new value plan.

Reps are stupid. I would try and see if you can get it price matched at best buy and buy it there. They should since it will be off contract and you're paying full price. I just don't think they have it in stock yet.

Looks like you won't be able to do it before 15 except asking your relative/friend to do it for you, as I've done it.
Their credit dept haven't approve me since I had credit alert on my credit history due to identity fraud.
Your situation, did they tell you why you should pay 400 deposit?
Have u ever had their postpaid account before? Cause if you've never cancelled their contracts before and had no issues with credit score then I'd suggest to contact credit score bureau and figure out from there why you've been declined.

I am so stressful now. What other option do I have with other carrier at all? Don't tell me to use as a wifi fone please.
Here is my IMEI. I dont understand that I already check that IMEI first hand, it shows clean, but somehow I still got scam.

Not saying I am not trusting you. But I just read on the forum that if carrier got report for stolen, other GSM will do the same. If I am wrong, I will be so happy.
If so, do I need to unlock or do anything or it will work right away with tmoble.

maybe the reason it isn't working is because you bought a t-mobile htc one and tried to use on at&t?

Phones do NOT get blacklisted if the ETF is not paid.
The GSMA does NOT allow any company to report a device as lost or stolen because of contractual disputes, or failure to pay the ETF.
And, no matter where you buy a used phone, any AT&T and T-Mobile device can be reported lost or stolen by anyone who has activated it, after the sale and the new owner has possession.
It doesn't matter if you got it off Swappa, eBay, Craigslist, or Gazelle, if the individual who is selling it, or the individual who previously had it active on their account wants to, they can report it was stolen 30-45-60 days after selling it and in the end, you're still screwed.

Actually, I meant black listed on that particular carrier.
Actually, it's difficult to blacklist a phone that is active on an account.
With Swappa, there is a transaction history. They also require registration and you need some kinds of account and a shipping address.
Craigslist leaves you absolutely no protection.
eBay gives buyer protection and dispute resolution. I've gotten a blacklisted phone via eBay. Went through dispute resolution and had my cash back in a few days.
There are always ways people will try to scam and you can mitigate that by being careful.
If it's a Craigslist purchase, meet at the store and activate it in the store. Someone not willing to meet you at the tMobile, AT&T or Verizon store for activation is probably a crook. I'm just saying.

yea man I hate/love Craigslist, I always have ppl offer to meet at their homes, and I'm like NO WAY, public play only, and if I am buying/selling phone I only meet at VZW s well.
it was funny the latest CL I sold sunglasses the guy asked to meet at his house, it was some 15 y/o with his parents lol.
never know what you're going to get, and he is one of the ones offered to have me come to his house. I would never give some random CL guy my address.

Also, even with transaction history and sales documentation on sites like Swappa, the seller can still claim the device was stolen and have it blacklisted.
Now, the carrier can locally block the device from being used for a contractual or billing dispute, but that isn't blacklisted and can be used on a different carrier (not an MVNO from the blocked carrier).

I'm sure you can file a claim for Craigslist, but you must use PayPal.
Craigslist is fine, but get a photo of the guys ID and a Bill Of Sale. But, I would go into the VZW or whatever store and activate on the spot as part of the transaction. That prevents the fraud.
The seller on Swappa, can claim theft, but you have a trail and the person's name and address and if you do it via PayPal, I always do, you get the protection.
I really feel bad for the OP.
I guess the moral of the story is, you can get ripped off anywhere and to mitigate that risk one must be very careful. Use transaction avenues that have the ability to get your money back should something go sideways.
Fortunately in the 15 or so phone transactions I've had; I've only had one issue and the seller made it right.
You must remember, when it comes to T-Mobile or AT&T devices, it doesn't matter where you are or if you activate it at the store or not.
What I'm saying is, right now, when it comes to T-Mobile or AT&T, anyone who has had the phone active on their account within a reasonable amount of time (not sure how many days prior to reporting) can report the device as lost or stolen, and as I said above, even if you meet at the wireless store to do the transaction.
That's just how screwed up the GSM market is right now.
