[Q] Allshare cast question.. - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy Note II

I had to go back to stock with injected root to use my allshare dongle. I loathe stock rom with every fiber of my being.
Does anyone know or has anyone tried flashing custom recovery and custom rom and kernel then flash back to stock recovery and allshare still works? Or perhaps a work around other than triangle away. Which I don't enjoy rebooting my phone every time I want to connect.
I use the dongle in my car with the pioneer appradio2 so rebooting the phone everything I connect to my stereo gets old fast.
Sorry if it seems like I'm nitpicking. I had triangle away soft brick on me once before and had to Odin flash to fix.

No, you have to be completely stock for it to work. This is a struggle for many of us and it goes back many months.
None of the devs took the time or interest to take the app apart and remove the part that checks the phone.
Sorry to give you the bad news.

While I am in no way a dev, I did take some time to take apart the handful of apks and jars that are most obviously related to allshare - but I was unable to find out where exactly the check occurs. I even went through and hacked up SysScope.apk a little in an attempt to emulate an xposed sysscopeblaster mod that I had heard helps, but again to no avail. And by "no avail" I mean "the person that tested it said it didn't work" - as I have no allshare things to really test stuff. I contacted some other actual-dev folks that got things working on other carriers, and while reports indicate that replicating their methods worked with the 4.1.1 base for whatever reason 4.1.2 seems to behave differently, making such a replication no longer effective. This quickly began to land far outside any pseudo-skillset I might possess unfortunately. Hmm... does anyone happen to have the the flashable zip that was used to OTA update from 4.1.1 UVALL4 to 4.1.2 UVBMB4? Or was an OTA not possible (i.e. had to do it via Kies/Odin/etc.)? I just did the Odin approach using stuff from sammobile myself... it's a long shot but there could be a clue in there perhaps.
Anyhoo - long story short my personal attempt at figuring this out has revealed an absence of some needed skill or awareness of where such checks actually occur. Just thought I would chime in to show that it's not necessarily an issue of no one looking into it - just maybe not the right people

Ah. Well that blows. Thanks for the info though. Strange how Samsung is usually one of the manufacturers that condones aftermarket and custom work but would pull a stunt like this with allshare and tethering.
Been eyeballing roms and triangle away. But if everything has to be completely stock to work I'm just a dog barking up am empty tree.

[Q] AT&T galaxy s3 can't check for OTA updates?

Literally every time i check for software updates i get
"Communication failed"
The server is currently unavailable.
Your device will automatically check for an update within the next 48 hours.
Then if i check again it says device is up to date, you can check for updates again in XXhours. If i go into application manager -> AT&T Software Update and clear data, i can check for updates again but i get the same communication failed. I also tried clearing data and rebooting phone, and it still wont check.
And i can't get Samsung Kies running on my windows 7 pc for some reason, so i can't get updates from there either.
Is anyone else on AT&T experiencing these problems? Any fix for this? I really want that update that adds brightness control to the notification menu.

I did not update, but hearing that update would disable local search, add new modem. Nothing about Brightness control
There is no brightness control on ATT update. I was having the same problem you were and exchanged the phone. There is no fix as far as I know for the error you are getting. It is a common issue. Search the annoyances (bugs) thread.
I don't know if the OTA update resolves your issue because they day after I exchanged mine the update came out.

I also haven't been able to get the OTA update. I assumed it was because I rooted and the device is listed as 'modified'. Is the update worth it?
It is in my opinion, and my usage habbits, for the WiFi stability increase that is gained.
Universal search is stripped (searches conducted on phone do not include on device results, ie contacts).
In other words, if you use the Google search by long pressing your menu button the results from your search will only be pulled from the internet.
I rarely use the search built in, so it hardly mattered to me.
Check out the developer forum for ways around the universal strip if you are rooted and want to update.

Well i reseated the SIM card, and removed the little blue tape from the sd slot and the SIM slot, rebooted and still not working.
I wanted to avoid rooting, since the stock software runs so smoothly and i liked being on the latest at&t software. I guess since i can't get OTA updates now theres no reason not to root.
Will this issue be fixed eventually? Or would i be better off exchanging phones while i can?
I'd exchange it. If you have faulty hardware then rooting won't do anything for you.
Peace of mind, if anything, that if you decide to root your phone is functioning as it should from the start.
Others will argue it's software issues.
But, whatever the cause, none of us paid to have a 90% functioning phone from the factory. Go get what you paid for is my take on it.
Good luck.

Well speaking as a software engineer, i'm almost certain its a software issue, most likely with at&t's software update app, or on their servers. Mabey reinstalling the at&t software update application will help?
It sounds reasonable to me. Maybe try the method for No trip flash counter in devoplment? You would be upgrading to the newest firmware and have root and not trip the flash counter. You would still be able to check for ota updates (although should just return the status of your software is up to date since it is a totally stock ROM just with root injected). I imagine that would reinstall the software update service. Although with your knowledge you are way over my head. And whether or not when updating ROMs if that application is reinstalled is something I can't answer.
Maybe just try this first:
Settings> Application Manager> All> AT&T Software Update> Clear Data> Confirm
Power off Phone
Remove battery for at least thirty seconds.
Reinstall battery and power on device.
Try again after device boots up.

I've been having this same problem
I was thinking that its because of AT&T's controlled release of the OTA.
Its been so long since the release, that I can't imagine that's still true. I also agree that its probably a software thing. I have a number of the bloat apps disabled and also wonder if one or more of those would interfere with such a thing.
I'd love to hear about a resolution.

That's an interesting theory, I've disabled some boatware too. Have you tried enabling them? I'm going to try that now.

So, if it's a software issue why is it two identical devices running the same software from the factory yield different results? I.e. my first device would do exactly as your original post outlines, then my replacement device had no issue checking for updates (same stock software, same device form factor).
If you search there are a lot of examples of complaints of this exact issue.
I am also very interested in this because even though there are many complaints out there, the only answers seem to be;
1) who cares this is xda and we update through Odin/cwm etc...
2) replace it.
Good luck, I hope you guys find an answer.

I haven't tried enabling everything. I've tried enabling 'Samsung Push' which seemed like the likely starting point. I've been trying to do some debug on some battery drain things, so I've been hesitant to change too much at once. Also, I can basically only check every 24 hours so its slow going.
As far as the hardware issue, it just doesn't make too much sense that a hardware issue would be causing a problem because the software update would presumably be using the same hardware as the rest of the working smartphone functions. I think the explanation to one device updating and one not is more likely a server device id filtering or a user changing more than 'just the new hardware'.
Its neither here nor there though. Everyone will have there hair brained theories. Why don't we start asking what features will be on the next iphone. Seriously though, apple has to add a removable battery right? (I'm just kidding, please don't spam a million responses about how that will or will not ever happen.)

You can bypass the wait time between checks by going into application managment -> at&t software update and clearing data. Then you can try to update again.

I've had similar issues checking for updates. i gave up and pulled the first update with the USALG1 rom posted in the development forum sticky. I too have several apps disabled (actually moved out of the system/app dir) and was wondering if that possibly caused issues. I never did try updating through kies though.
My kies wont even run on my windows 7 64 bit. There seems to be alot of people having problems with kies on win7 64 bit, nothing from samsung either. So theres really no way for me to get updates
This is How I Got My Phone to Update
I should add that this was my 2nd galaxy s3 to not update. I did a factory reset hoping it would fix the issue. It didn't. I called att customer care for help b/c I was thinking maybe they just set up my account incorrectly when I first got the phone. Nothing else really makes sense. They said they couldn't help and take it to the store. I took it to an att store, and they said they don't actually do any software troubleshooting, so they just exchanged it for a new one. I tried doing the update there, it failed, so I took it home, and I force closed all the update apps, cleared all their data, and it worked as soon as I hit update. If force closing and clearing the data from the att and samsung update apps doesn't help, There may be nothing else you can do except take it in to an att shop.

When you got it to work, exactly what apps did you force close and clear data? Just AT&T software update? Any others?
Sent from my SAMSUNG-SGH-I747 using xda app-developers app
I force closed the At&T Software Update app and I think the Samsung Push Service. It is really the AT&T software update app that finally started downloading immediately after trying it again.
So I finally attempted the Keis connection and it worked immediately. I don't know what other problems people are having, but when I installed it on my Win7 x64 machine I had the S3 connected. After I ran the software for the first time it mentioned an update and proceeded to update it. Keep fighting the good fight jefferson9.

Can't update my phone in any way

Hey guys, I'm new here, so this thread is probably on here somewhere, but oh well. I can't update my S3 OTA or through Kies. I know there is an update, as my friend got it fine on his yesterday (it's the one with the brightness slider in notification center). On OTA, it says communication failed every single time, then says up to date. I have tried clearing data and all that as well. And in Kies, it also says I have the latest firmware, even though I know I don't. Any ideas? I really don't want this happening when Jelly Bean comes out. Oh yeah, I'm not rooted or anything by the way, I'm still on stock for now.
I have the same exact issue. I think it has something to do with ATT and the phone not being set up right in their system. Did you by chance have an iPhone before your S3 and use the same Sim card?
Mine wouldn't find the ota on the phone. I searched around here and found a thread someone had started that has instructions on how to download the flashable zip and install it via CWM. Worked like a champ. If you are rooted this is the way you'll want to go

Hey do you mind giving me instructions on how to do that? And is there a safe way to root my phone on a Mac? And last of all, can I still get updates such as Jelly Bean on a rooted GS3 without losing root without messing anything up? Sorry I'm coming from iPhones and jailbreaking so I'm not familiar with all this.

I've always recommended returning whatever device you have back to 100% stock (as it was out of the box) before taking any official updates. I've heard ppl say they can take them just fine while still rooted - but they lose root. Sometimes you can simply re-root, sometimes you have to wait for a new exploit to be discovered before you can root again. In light of this, I always wait a week (sometimes less) after a new OTA (Over The Air) update is released, just to be sure I can regain root immediately. Welcome to the wonderful world of Android OS!!!
[edit] to answer your post about not being able to take the last OTA update. Have you tried a factory reset? Through Android Recovery? You will lose personal settings and contacts if you dont back them up. But, it may solve your update issue. Another thing I know, that a lot of ppl do is - as soon as you buy a new device, such as the awesome Galaxy S III, is to immediately do the factory reset. (Who knows how many employees have goofed around with the new toys they just got in stock)
I had the same problem with not being able to get the OTA update on my S3. Turns out it was a bad sim. As soon as I got a new sim from AT&T everything worked fine. Wish I would have done that first cause I spent hours on the phone with AT&T and Samsung trying to fix the problem. Good luck. Hope that works for you.

Same issue here. Just spent a couple hours this Saturday at an AT&T store - end result is that they are swapping it out under the manufacture 1 year warranty.
Sim replacement did not fix it for me.
Tech support over the the stores land line says that the option to push OTA to phone is greyed out and not selectable with my account.
They are sending me a new phone so we'll see.

I'm not sure what else to suggest except trying a new sim card like someone else suggested... beyond that, a replacement device. Sorry man, wish I could be more useful...
[edit] The only other thing I can think to try would be to completely remove all your current USB Drivers for Samsung from your PC and reboot the PC, then re-install the USB Drivers, and try Kies again. If it still doesn't work, try a different PC.
Well I'm going to try a different computer, and if that doesn't work, I'm going to an AT&T store. Thanks for all the help guys.

[Q] Fried my GPS, not working at all on any roms.

I was flashing between CyanogenMod 10 nightlies and DrewGaren's Jelly Bean roms, wiping data every single time and always doing a clean flash when I noticed on CyanogenMod 10/05 nightly that the GPS wasn't catching any satellites at all. It doesn't seem like it's even trying because the GPS dot doesn't even come up in the notification bar. I tried using GPS Test and it just says 0. Same thing with any other GPS application.
I tried flashing to other roms to see if it changed anything and still no luck. Finally, I flashed all the way back to AT&T stock in ODIN and still no luck!! I'm thinking of just taking it to the AT&T store and see if they can do anything about it, I don't know the warranty situation since I bought it off of Craigslist. Anybody have any ideas?
Please don't go to ATT. We can't really help you since you bought it from a. craigslist and b. all we could do is get you to call warranty department in which case they may charge you since it was not purchased at the att store.
Do you know if the GPS ever worked??
Please go to dialer and type *#0*#. In that menu go to sensor test and make sure everything is working properly.
Go to http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1767929 for a full list of tests you can do to make sure the phone is actually hardware damaged.

Got it working
Hey, thanks for the help guys. I actually got it working. Flashed stock rom with ODIN and did a factory reset and it just started working out of no where. This was after 0 GPS signal on many different roms for over 24 hours.
No idea what caused it to stop working in the first place maybe some kind of conflict with the Drew Garen Sprint based Jelly Bean rom or maybe something in Cyanogen Mod 10/05 nightly. Perhaps the phone got tired of me flashing so many roms and just needed to rest overnight lol.
If anybody else has an issue with their GPS not catching signal at all flash all the way back to stock and factory reset and hopefully it'll sort the issue out.
Wow, everything you described in your OP is happening to me. I believe this happened to me after flashing DrewGaren's ROM too (4 point something). I tried it out then went back to Wanamlite, my DD, and experienced all that you said. After Wanam I flashed 2 or 3 other ROMs and got the same response... no GPS.
Just in the process of Odin flashing a stock image to see what happens.
Edit: Back to stock, then factory reset. Tried accessing the GPS service menu but that didn't work. Final result is that GPS is not working at all and here is no indication in the status bar. Looks like I'll be off to the Samsung store for service...
I think the Drew Garen Milestone 4.5 has something to do with this. It's based on the Sprint leak and maybe that made our GPS wonky.
Just to let you know, the stock firmware I used was this one.
http://samsung-updates.com/get/648/Samsung_Firmware_SGH-I747_ATT_I747UCALG1_Android_4_0_4.html
Hopefully you can get it sorted out. Just wondering, how do you access the GPS service menu? Cause the code I know doesn't work on AT&T Galaxy S 3 at all so I want to see if the code you tried works on mine. Good luck getting your phone working.
Another reason why you shouldn't use DG roms? Lol
I'm running insomnia leaks with no gps issues. Glad to see the OP got his working again.

Thanks for the firmware link but I am in Canada with Telus.
As for the GPS Service Menu, I saw some dialer codes for accessing it but they don't seem to work for our model.
It's weird how GPS doesn't show up anywhere on the phone now. Not the status bar or in battery usage stats. I am beginning to wonder if this is a hardware issue more than anything.
I know, it's like the GPS totally disappears from the phone, I thought it has a hardware issue too! I was actually on the phone with Samsung customer support and ended up fixing it while I was on hold.
On my first try I got no results too but when I downloaded the one from samsung-updates, flash via ODIN, and then factory reset the phone from settings that's when I finally got my GPS to work. They have the Telus software up there too if you want to give it a whirl. http://samsung-updates.com/get/2566/Samsung_Firmware_SGH-I747M_TLS_I747MVLALH1_Android_4_0_4.html
But at this point your only recourse might be to get done through Samsung customer support. Let us know what happens.

Thanks, that is the exact firmware I flashed. Just in the process of downloading the I747MVLALE8 version. I know it's older but worth a shot.
I'll update the thread as I go along but am most likely going to the Samsung store in a week or two so there will be a delay in my response.
The disappearing gpshappened to me also. I flashed dg's m 4.5 and thats when I lost gps completely. I did all of the above mentioned in other threads and couldn't get it too come back. At&t replaced it for me. I would advise staying away from sprint leaks I guess.

Update:
Got in touch with Samsung. They forwarded me to the warranty repair company located in my neck of the woods (Vancouver, BC).
Company is called Service Absolut, located in Richmond around Westminster Hwy and No. 6 Road. There is another in Montreal for easterners.
Regular warranty service is 3 business days for $0 OR 3 hour express service for $30. This place isn't too far from my office so maybe I'll give the 3-day service a try..... on second thought I think the $30 might be worth it for same day service. :cyclops:
I ran into the same or similar loss of GPS on DG Milestone 4.5 and 5. I was able to regain GPS on a CWM restore back to Milestone 4.
Really think this is a ROM bug that can be fixed in SW. I'm surprised to hear that some have had much tougher luck than I have.
Anybody heard anything from Drew Garen? (I don't have enough posts to comment in the main thread, or I'd be there)

Yep, this is exactly what happened to me.
I flashed DG's M4.5 and my GPS quit working. Very weird.
I tried 3 other ROMS and no luck. I ended up returning the phone.

Final update:
Took the phone to the service center. Tech looked at the phone and tested but couldn't find anything wrong. He replaced the mainboard and all is now fine. GPS is working well.
Next thing is to check out my new CPU now... I hope it doesn't suck.

Thanks for the tip but I factory resetted the sh*t out of my phone, lol. Our phone (Canadian version) only has 2 official firmware releases for it and I Odin'd them both and performed factory reset on both, multiple times. Guess I missed that little tidbit earlier
I really hope this was just a one time occurrence.
So I ran into this same issue, although it was from flashing Smartguy's ROM and then going back to CM10. It does seem to be caused by using the Sprint leak. I was unable to recover my GPS with the above method of flashing to stock via Odin and doing the factory reset.
I decided to try going back to my Sprint leak via a Nandroid, this brought my GPS back. I then used my CM10 Nandroid again GPS was working perfectly, although I needed to use GPS test to get it working on CM10. Hope this helps others with this issue.

or when I use my Bluetooth device ( while making a regular call without the wifi calling) I can make a normal phone call with no problem. I think it's a software issue but I tried to format my phone and downloaded different roms and the issue still exist so can you please help me

I have a galaxy s4 which I'm facing a Regular phone call problem, when I try to make a phone call using the network I won't be able to hear the other party and the other party won't hear me as well, but when I use wifi calling, Viber, Vonage the same speaker and ear pierce works just fine
or when I use my Bluetooth device ( while making a regular call without the wifi calling) I can make a normal phone call with no problem. I think it's a software issue but I tried to format my phone and downloaded different roms and the issue still exist so can you please help me

You need to give WAY more details on what you've done to try and fix this to help us rule things out.
Have you done a full return to bone stock 4.2 Android using Odin?
What version of Android are you running? What other roms have you tried?

Ok this is what I've done so far, I rooted my and used WICKED 4.2 rom and DARTHSTALKER 4.2 rom, but the issue still exist. Then I used a backup that I have from another S4 and thought maybe that will help. but also nothing changed. Then I unrooted my phone and put it back to stock rom for 4.2, and sent it to Samsung ( I did make sure to remove the trace of it been rooted), Samsung refused to fix my phone because it has a small crack on the screen and want to charge me $200 for changing the LCD, so I refused and sent it back, so When they sent it back I updated the software to 4.3 hoping that it might fix it, but still no regular call can be done. I again rooted my phone and I'm on CyanogenMod 11
I'm gonna try to put WICKED V8, and see what might happen.
another think I want to ask. can it be that the modem file is corrupted and I need to redownload it into the phone using ODIN?, if you think that might be the problem where can I find the .tar file?
I guess I covered everything, if you have more questions let me know

That is wacky. Issues like this tend to do nothing but piss you off because they make no sense at all and all logic you'd apply to fix it is out the window.
Nothing about what you are saying makes any sense. I'm not saying you are decribing it wrong. I'm just saying it makes no sense. Expecially the part about Samsung not fixing the speaker due to a crack in the LCD. That is what is so agrevating abotu problems like this. So believe me I understand how frustrated you must be!!!!
I mean you know the speaker works because it plays other sound. You know the phone makes calls because it works with the bluetooth. So this SCREAMS "Software issue".
I'd Odin it back to complete 4.2 stock firmware. Do a search, there's a thread around here somewhere that has the .tar file. It's either in the general or q and a forum. That's the only thing I can think to try. That will overwrite the existing modem you have as well (though I don't think that's the issue)
If could be that you have gotten something messed up that flashing new ROM's just isn't overwriting. But if that's the case an Odin restore to stock WILL fix it. If Odin doesn't fix it, I'm completely stumped.

thank you for your reply I'm gonna try to return it to stock, and about the samsung part they said that their policy is to fix the phone as a whole not just one part of it or one problem. which I think is stupid way just to get money off me

[Q] Everything keeps refreshing!

I'm using the Verizon version, vk810 lte, and ever since the last OTA I've been having a pretty unique problem. Well at least from what I've been able to find. Maybe I'm phrasing things the wrong way but the best way I can think to describe my issue is that every now and then my entire system just refreshes, no shut down, no warning, no overall crash. It does not matter what app I'm using at the time or even just being in a system menu or home screen. When in a menu or home screen everything just sort of refreshes as if I just turned the tablet on, if in an app some times it will crash, some times it will just redraw, and other times it will just restart the app as if I just opened it. I have had an error msg pop up ocasionally that google play services has crashed, but not always. I have tried uninstalling apps, a full factory reset both from the menu and from recovery and it just keeps coming back even right from stock. Some times it does it right away and some times a few days apart. It can happen every few minutes or every few hours. The only real pattern I've noticed is that it will always do it twice within no more than 30 seconds or so. I've kept this device stock, no rooting and no roms. There isn't much support out there for the verizon version (and yeah I know why and that verizon is a pain no matter how you look at it) so I haven't tried anything to drastic. I'm not sure if flashing the stock rom will do anything and there isn't an image with the stock recovery out there that I could find so I'm reluctant to try it. Maybe next OTA update will fix this but that's some what of a piss off. I'm still under warranty but with the way Verizon does it now all I'll get is someone's refurb. I've also tried installing different versions of google play services but I run into all sorts of issues with that and I'm not even certain that's where the problem is. Can anyone think of what else I could do?

First, and I hope you don't take it the wrong way. Please next time make paragraphs every few sentences - it makes it much more readable. As it is, I just skimmed it to get the jist. No offense meant, and I know it sucks to have a malfunctioning device.
It's definitely not the latest (that I'm aware of) official stock ROM's problem. I've been using 23A, which as far as I know is the latest OTA, for a month or so, and I don't have any problem like that.
If I were you I would start back at the complete beginning. Use the one of these three threads for downgrading to the old build of 10B, I think it was, re-root using Stump, and re-upgrade using the KDZ of 23A I provide in one of the other of these three links:

If that doesn't fix it, I would suspect a hardware issue unrelated to the ROM. By the way, if you downgrade to 10B and it still has the same problem, then you know it's the device itself, and you can just go ahead and process it under warranty without upgrading the ROM.
Good luck and let us know what happens!

No offense taken, I haven't posted much and wasn't certain what info to give and what info to leave out, live and learn.
Thanks for the info, it'll be a while before I can try what you suggested as I'll be traveling for a bit and don't want to rush it. But thank you anyway .

I've ended up sitting on my tablet and now trying to warranty through verizon. Just no time to work on it. Thank you for the suggestions.
