[Q] 1st gen kindle fire return - Kindle Fire Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Ok so I have the 1st gen kindle fire and it seems to have a charger port problem of some kind so amazon is going to replace it (a month out of warrenty)
but the problem is its rooted with the play store and several other apps no custom rom or anything . I need to know if i need to unroot before i send it back and if so how ...
It wont take a charge and will only turn on when plugged in and even then it only stays on for maybe a minute then turns off so how can I unroot or should i just say the heck with it and send it back rooted??? will I be charged ?
anybody have any past experience with a similar situation????

I don't know from experience but my suggestion would be don't send it back to Amazon rooted because the act of rooting usually voids any warrenty. It's possible they wouldn't replace it because it is rooted.

they made an exception to the warrenty being out by a couple months and they know its a hardware issue. can't factory reset because the battery wont take a charge. battery wont take a charge there fore i cant plug into a computer to unroot either
this sucks

My Usb died this week and now I'm sending it back. I never mentioned it was rooted but they're still sending me a replacement anyway.

I had the same USB port problem. They sent a replacement. A week later I returned the broken rooted unit. I never heard anything further from Amazon.
Good luck,
The Don

Nice. I'm sure part of their standard procedure is a clean wipe and flash of the factory image.

Also rooted and claimed warrenty

I had the same problem with mine and I just let the battery drop so it wouldn't turn on anymore. Now amazon would have to put a new port on in order to get it working.

[Q] My Desire HD won't boot

Hi
So i got my Desire HD 2 days after they started selling here in sweden and i've never had any problems with it what so ever, until today.
So when i got to school today my Desire HD wouldn't boot up, it worked this morning when i sent a text to my friend. I figured i hadnt plugged it in correctly when i was going to charge it last night but that wasn't the case. I tried to remove and reinsert the battery but that wouldn't work, i also tried to remove the memory card, wouldn't work either.
I can't boot it at all, i can't even boot it to recovery mode.
I really am in big trouble, if anyone knows what is causing this or has experienced this please respond...

If it is completely dead then Id try another battery....yeah easier said than done I know...none of your mates got one??
Is it under warranty??
Have you installed a custom rom?
Does it boot when plugged into the mains?
It may just be the circuit board or connectors to the battery??
To be honest...it could be bloody anything..

Nope no one i know have one :/
It's unrooted so no custom roms in it.
It does NOT boot when plugged into the mains either
I think it's under warranty since i bought it not that long ago, but i didn't buy extended warranty though so i dunno
does a light come on when you plug it into the wall to charge?
Have you looked at the connectors on the SIM card & battery covers? Mine look like they are simply painted on. Yours maybe worn....
Nope theres no light...
I don't really know what you mean by painted on because i looked at mine and they stick out a bit, if i'm looking at the right piece.
It's a bit useless to begin discussing about this. YOu have done nothing to void your warrenty. It should boot and it doens't. That means you should return it. This isn't you problem, so to say.
I had the same issues, unattented reboots, then DHD randomly turning off. And last Saturday, impossible to start it again. At this point, I had rooted it, S-OFFed it and installed ClockWork Recovery and a custom ROMS as well.
Anyway, I sent it for maintenance yesterday and expect to have my DHD repaired within the next two weeks...

Can I still return this?

I just got my E4GT a couple weeks ago...all of a sudden, it started going to hell. The touchscreen stopped working pretty much completely, it won't charge and won't acknowledge the USB cable at all, so I can't connect to Odin or flash a stock firmware, or use a usb jig. The screen flashes transparent red/blue, i cant use the touchscreen while charging...
It's a hardware issue, I know but can I still take it in? What are the chances they'll say I can't return it because I rooted it? All of the employees at my sprint store seem pretty clueless...is it worth a try just to see if they can fix/replace it?
I really don't want to pay 100 bucks for a new phone just because I rooted it -__-
Also, my parents are REALLY, REALLY pissed.
Thanks, for the love of god, help me.
I have to go on a trip in 3 days and I NEED my phone.

Most employees wont know it's been rooted. Especially if they can't get into it like you're saying. If you can get into it, go into settings>Privacy>Factory Reset. This will erase mostly everything on the phone.
You should tell them it just stopped working and ask for an exchange. To me, it sounds like a hardware problem though.
Well...what I'm worried about is that they'll put a different battery in, see that it still turns on, see the custom boot screen/yellow triangle of doom, and tell me to get the **** out. >____<
Should I flash a broken ZIP onto it just to be sure? I have a half-downloaded starburst ROM on my sd card.
If it matters by the wy, I'm running calkulin's rom 1.5, but this started happening on starburst 1.9.8r. I flashed calkulin's to see if it fixed the problem, but nope. :/
Is there a stock ROM I could flash through CWM and not Odin?

Sprint Repair M&P states that rooted devices are to be triaged by normal process. Part of that triage process is to unroot the device if the problem is suspected to be caused by root.
Worst comes to worst, they unroot the device and you get an exchange.
I also got the red transparent screen once a few days ago. I am experiencing weird other problems now

Have you tried using different usb cables? Just throwing it out there you would be surprised what a bad cable can do. Same with the power block you plug in the wall
They won't care about root. Just play dumb if they call you out on it (in other words say you didn't know root is bad - but only if they ask). As far as battery, put the oem battery back in, never use a non oem battery no matter what anyone tells you, I am an engineer who designs these things for a living, correct power supplies are crucial. Finally, they will probably ship you a refurb if you are out of your return period, not in time for your trip. It is just the way it is.

You can use something like dropbox to transfer some more stockish looking ROM on your phone, but i'm not too sure how to lock it without USB cable. I'm too lazy now to reboot my phone into bootloader, but wasn't there an option to re-lock it?
Anyway, if this will happen to my GN i'll just pay €30 for USB port replacement. I had same issue on SGS2.

well... to be honest, i think thats a lot of money that can be spent on a phone thats pretty new. With that being said, it is cheap compared to what i would be paying if i had to pay full retail price.
------
To update this thread, I got my phone and charger replaced free from verizon. Basically, i had a bunch of different roms downloaded and tried to install some good ics looking roms. They didnt really work as well as i wanted so it was an easy solution to "brick" (and brick is used very very very loosely) my phone.
1. Wipe data/ cache / dalvik
2. Install zip from sd.
3. Pick out a different rom and let it install ---- BUT WAIT
4. Pull battery in the middle of installation.
I had to do it a couple of times, but eventually i got it to the point where the only thing that would show up was the google logo.
My thought was that they would just reflash to stock in the store, but the rep didnt really know what he was doing. He probably figured i tried to root (he asked if i tried to root... duh, NO!), and probably spent most of the time trying to get it to come on and didnt bother putting on their falshing machine thing.
Anyways, Since it was still a phone under warranty and they had no evidence of it being unlocked or rooted, they replaced my phone as well as my charger for free.
------
Im just hoping they dont secretly put a note under my account that i might root my phone.

nexus not charging

i know it is already posted but my issue is different. Some can charge their phone when it is off but mine cant charge even if its off.
When its off and i plug the charger the lightning logo appears, it indicates that its charging but when i turn it on the percentage of the battery remained the same. it didnt charge at all. Also my pc does not recognize my phone whether if its off or on.
i tried with no luck changing rom, kernel, used different cables and chargers (i even used one from LG).
i want to take it back to samsung but my bootloader is unlocked, im using costume rom, and rooted. They will not accept or repair it
EDIT: i want to install the stock rom and relock bootloader but how? since my pc doesnt connect to my phone

Use a cocktail stick and try push the chipinside your phone slot upwards a little (if the phone were laid faceup on a table). Be delicate as you dont want to force it, but a little nudge up and your problems should aaaaall be resolved.
ive already done that no luck.
bump!
if i can restore my phone to stock recovery, stock rom, stock kernel, remove root will they accept it(warranty)? or do they have something to know that i modified my phone?
EDIT: because im planning to return in back to samsung

Is it a play store model or international? If it is international and you are located in the USA, Samsung will not do it. You can replace the usb port yourself..
mine too
Mine did the exact same thing. Good luck sending it in and having them actually fix it. I'm beginning to think their tech guys are really just a room full of chimps randomly putting stuff together.
I told them exactly what the problem was (because I looked it up before sending it in and my problem was the exact same as everyone else's) and they ignored me and just switched out the battery. That didn't work, so I sent it back again. Then, they updated the software. Since it's a hardware issue, obviously that did nothing. Now, they have repaired the PBA. I don't know what a PBA is or what it has to do with my USB port, but I'm betting the issue still will not be fixed and I'll have to send it back, yet again. After all this mess, I think I'm done with Samsung entirely.

i have sent it already. fortunately i was able to return to stock without USB. Hope they cant detect that ive done a mess on my phone.
probably the repair shop where you took your phone are just too lazy to repair. I hope they wont do the mess they did to you but i think it depends on tech guys if they are lazy enough to repair.

Did you get it fixed?
This is kind of what my phone is doing too (here's the thread i've made)
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2059289
It will charge, but only to a certain point, regardless of rom, kernel, on or off, etc
over the past few days the maximum charge has gone down and down. Now it only charges to a max of 82%. I have 2 batteries and it does the same thing on each. My (hopeful) solution is that i bought an external wall battery charger and will charge batteries that way. I have the verizon model so if i wanted to do some sort of warranty work i'd probably have to go through them (not even sure if im still covered). I really dont want to deal with it. It boggles my mind why my phone is doing this though, charges fine but not to full. Oh well c'est la vie.

i wouldnt recommend that to people, for me it went from a phone with "phantom charging" (ie flashing on and off for charging) and issues charging to a short circuit on the usb connection, so that the phone switches off when a usb cable is plugged in. What is well worth trying first is simply giving the port a good clean, a little bit of alcohol and that same cocktail stick may well solve your issue. I've been left charging via a chopped up usb cable to the dock connectors.
i dont doubt that forcing the tab in the port may have worked for you, but it has failed badly for others (ie me), so just be careful suggesting it
I had a similar problem as my micro usb socket was damaged. Don't worry about sending it for repair, do it yourself. The circuit board with a new micro usb socket is available on ebay, I paid £5 for mine. Watch a tear-down video or 2 on youtube and you will be sorted.
The GNex is easy to take apart requiring just a small philips head screwdriver and a pry tool, i used a guitar pik, and these are also available on ebay for just a few ££'s.
Can do the whole job in 15 minutes.

[Q] Charging problem

Hello people,
I got a GT-i9300 for about 7 months now and since yesterday i got problems charging it.
2 days ago i went to sleep and as always putted it on charge and i saw the charging notification. When i woke up ~8h later the phone was not charged at all and while connected it was not charging.
I tried reconnecting it a couple of times but nothing. I tried connecting it to a pc but nothing. Then i used the charger that came with S4 and after a couple of seconds it started charging, few minutes later it just stopped again. Reconnected it and it was charging, made it to 100% normally.
Today i tried connecting it again but now it won't charge, likewise i won't connect to pc the moment i connect it but after ~5m at least and it's only charging, the pc won't see the phone anywhere.
Also tried another S3 charger but nothing.
I only have official samsung chargers. 2 x s3 and a s4 one. None works on it at the moment while they work normally on my s4.
I tried it turning it off and removing battery but nothing, did a full wipe but still nothing.
The usb itself looks alright plus yesterday when i was charging it i moved the wire around a bit to check if it was the connection but it was not.
I was looking around the web but found nothing and the similar threads here ain't the same as my case.
Also the phone is on official firmware and not rooted.
Does anyone know anything about it ? I will most likely take it to service tomorrow but since i need the phone i would prefer not to have a ~5 days delay from them.
I have the same problem and the only thing that will charge it is a higher voltage playbook charger. I'm not too sure what the problem is but if you do get it serviced could you please post the cause of this issue?

Sadly i don't have a higher voltage charger plus i don't think it's a good idea to use that, at least not all the time.
Will take it for service tomorrow unless i solve it somehow. Will report back with what they will tell me.
I had previously flashed official 4.2 on my s3 but i reverted to the carrier official version, about 2 months ago. Any chance i will have problems with warranty with the flash count being 3 ?
I read that you normally don't have a problem but i want to know if someone had first hand experience with that.

This can very well be a problem. Your best option is to root and reset flash counter with triangle away. After reset, re install original firmware with Odin. If they do warranty fix it, it will be by replacing the motherboard, so if there is anything you need off of it, be sure to back it up on a computer. Also, flashing original with Odin can wipe the device so back up before then. If they look and see a custom flash counter of 3, your warranty will be void.
Alright, took it to service yesterday ( official samsung service ) and got it today. They changed the usb port and all is good, warranty had it covered.
I didn't reset counter before giving it but they either didn't check the counter or checked it and it was not an issue.
