[Q] Charging problem - AT&T, Rogers, Bell, Telus Samsung Galaxy S III

Hello people,
I got a GT-i9300 for about 7 months now and since yesterday i got problems charging it.
2 days ago i went to sleep and as always putted it on charge and i saw the charging notification. When i woke up ~8h later the phone was not charged at all and while connected it was not charging.
I tried reconnecting it a couple of times but nothing. I tried connecting it to a pc but nothing. Then i used the charger that came with S4 and after a couple of seconds it started charging, few minutes later it just stopped again. Reconnected it and it was charging, made it to 100% normally.
Today i tried connecting it again but now it won't charge, likewise i won't connect to pc the moment i connect it but after ~5m at least and it's only charging, the pc won't see the phone anywhere.
Also tried another S3 charger but nothing.
I only have official samsung chargers. 2 x s3 and a s4 one. None works on it at the moment while they work normally on my s4.
I tried it turning it off and removing battery but nothing, did a full wipe but still nothing.
The usb itself looks alright plus yesterday when i was charging it i moved the wire around a bit to check if it was the connection but it was not.
I was looking around the web but found nothing and the similar threads here ain't the same as my case.
Also the phone is on official firmware and not rooted.
Does anyone know anything about it ? I will most likely take it to service tomorrow but since i need the phone i would prefer not to have a ~5 days delay from them.

I have the same problem and the only thing that will charge it is a higher voltage playbook charger. I'm not too sure what the problem is but if you do get it serviced could you please post the cause of this issue?

Sadly i don't have a higher voltage charger plus i don't think it's a good idea to use that, at least not all the time.
Will take it for service tomorrow unless i solve it somehow. Will report back with what they will tell me.

I had previously flashed official 4.2 on my s3 but i reverted to the carrier official version, about 2 months ago. Any chance i will have problems with warranty with the flash count being 3 ?
I read that you normally don't have a problem but i want to know if someone had first hand experience with that.

This can very well be a problem. Your best option is to root and reset flash counter with triangle away. After reset, re install original firmware with Odin. If they do warranty fix it, it will be by replacing the motherboard, so if there is anything you need off of it, be sure to back it up on a computer. Also, flashing original with Odin can wipe the device so back up before then. If they look and see a custom flash counter of 3, your warranty will be void.

Alright, took it to service yesterday ( official samsung service ) and got it today. They changed the usb port and all is good, warranty had it covered.
I didn't reset counter before giving it but they either didn't check the counter or checked it and it was not an issue.

[Q] Desire doesn't charge and won't boot up

Hey guys,
Last week I was at the bar taking a picture from some nice girls, unfortanly my Desire slipped from my hand an fell pretty hard on the floor. It was off an didn't boot. After a night without the battery, the next day it booted and worked for an week, no problems at all. Yesterday my phone shutted off again and now I can't boot it at all again, left it the whole night at the charger, but that didn't seem to help, ive searched the forums but nothing helped. The strange thing is, that it worked for an week and now it doesn't anymore. Does someone knows a proper solution for this, my phone is rooted and RCMixHD 2.0 is running on it. help?
Ok, I found out that I still have warranty at my provider! But, do they start whining if they found out my phone has an custom rom?

Hi.
I think that more than for sure there will be problems if they are able to find that you have ROOT-ed your phone since this breaks the warranty. Anyway try leaving it without battery in for a day and see if this can make the phone boot up. You could also try another battery, if you have a friend with the same phone or you are able to go to a store and ask to try out a battery to see if that is the problem.
If that is your problem you can, I think go to warranty and say that your problem is the battery.
It would be recommended that you run a RUU if you are to go to warranty. If they find out you messed with the phone I think your warranty will be gone forever.
If the battery is not the problem, then I think you can't do anything, since your phone doesn't even boot up, but go to warranty and pray that they wont examine too deep and see the root.
Still I have one curiosity: the led is still showing that you are charging the phone (the orange, green led)?

Thanx for your reply, I tried another battery but that didn't help . The led doesnt show up if I put an charger in it (tried with different chargers/cables the phone isnt doing anything. The last time it stopped working I didn't use the phone for about 8 hours, and after that I booted and worked fine for an week. So hopefully he wil work again this evening so I can make him stock again for warranty.

Hi.
As it sounds, it could be a motherboard problem, or the usb connection on the phone, or anything else, but since it isn't working with any battery then it is surely from the motherboard.
Hope it starts one more time so you can bring it to stock.
Even if this fails, there's nothing else to try but getting it to warranty and cross fingers.
Good luck.

USB charging sometimes fails

good day all,
out of the blue my GNEX decided not to charge when plugged in... did the usual routine - try different cables, plugs, reboots, etc....
it seemed to charge when off for a few seconds and stop.
finally did the highly technical battery pull and voila - now charging on and off no problem
it has happened a few times, I noticed it only happened when battery is below 30% -
running: BlackICE AOKP based rom matched with Franco goodness
sending it for warranty = 3+ weeks of no phone. The lenders that my carrier gives out are ancient flip phones, totally unacceptable.
I am hoping it is software related.
any suggestions? tools to help me diagnose? I want to exhaust my options before going to the warranty route.
thanks

You've tried flashing stock to see if its still going on? I'm no expert, but if its still happening on stock, I'd consider sending it off.

I would send it back ASAP. I had the same issue with mine. It was not a software issue in my case but a hardware issue. When I spoke with Verizon they said it was a pretty common problem... I got a new one within 3 days, Unlocked the bootloader and such, and restored one of my backups and I was back up and running like nothing happened!
thanks for the reply guys.
I did all the regular steps of going back to stock, re-locked bootloader etc...
Now it is gone for warranty service. Fido in Canada sends them out for warranty and I will likely be waiting more then 3 weeks
really sucks - and the phone they give you is an ancient device of a flip phone, and the only one they had to offer me was filthy
so I went and bought a Samsung Gio to use in the meantime!

Finicky charging started happening to my world phone two weeks ago. If it was connected to my computer via usb I could tap the phone and it would disconnect. Tap the phone again and it would reconnect. Very touchy.
Sent it back to the UK this week. I picked up a Nexus on Google Play about two weeks ago as the replacement. Spendy, but works. I decided I should have a backup phone handy, anyway...

[Q] My Note 2 has died. Help?

My Note 2 has just died It was getting surprisingly laggy at odd moments in the past week, but I didn't think anything was wrong. I was updating a lot of applications one after another tonight (music was playing but it was jumpy, i think because apps were updating so i stopped music) and people were messaging me on the facebook app so I could see the notification light flash green. I was busy on my laptop, so I ignored the phone about 10 mins.
The green light kept flashing, but the screen wouldn't turn on when i pressed home or power key. so i took the battery out from the back and reinserted it. It wouldn't switch on at all, no SGS Note 2, no Samsung logo. nothing at all except a little red light flashing where the infrared light is everytime i tried to turn it on.
I tried connecting it to my computer. nothing happened. recovery mode bootup also failed. I tried charging the phone, even though the battery wasn't empty, still wouldn't switch on during charger plugged in or pulled out. Took out SD/Sim, no effect. A new battery didn't help. The phone doesn't charge either, the charger makes a funny electrical whining noise and the infrared red light flashes every so often.
It's basically dead. What can I do? The phone is also rooted, I can't remember how (think it's original chainfire root? i got my phone last oct). Will Samsung be able to switch on my phone and discover it's rooted? Also I read somewhere that legally speaking if rooting didn't cause the failure, you're still covered by EU law?
I am in the UK, bought Note 2 off a 3rd party reseller (Buymobilephones) who provided a handset, and T-Mobile for the contract.
Thanks

How long ago did you buy the phone?
If you were rooted, were you on stock rom?
If yes, than which build were you on, do you remember?
I have heard of phones dying from sds, were you on an older rom. If that is the case, and if you have hard bricked your phone, AND if you are under warranty you need not fear...the guys at samsung wouldn't be able to open your phone either to check whether its rooted or not, you are covered. Your phone would require a motherboard rwplacement 8n that case. I hope you had backups.

I bought it at end of last october, 1st gen/batch of Note 2s to hit the UK (IMEI starts with 354.....
I was rooted. The first auto-root Chainfire method via Odin.
Stock samsung rom. Very earliest versions of software.
I basically bought the phone last year when it first came out, rooted it as soon as possible and then did nothing else except enjoying my phone and install new apps. Whatever people were rooting/flashing/roms/kernels etc at the end of last october when the note 2 first came out in the uk is what I would have been on. Never updated since.
I might sound a bit stupid, but does a motherboard change means you lose everything in internal storage? ie photos, texts, contacts etc. I have no backups of anything. my fault I know. And Samsung wont' detect root after motherboard has been changed?
When you say "hardbricked", do you just mean it wont' physically and electrically turn on? Because i didn't interrupt rooting/flashing etc.
I googled SDS for the Note 2. Seems there is an issue I can't think how else my phone would just die.

I think we know the cause now, its sds. Only roms and kernels which have been developed after January 2013 are free of this problem. As you had rooted very early you would not have recieved stock updates from samsung. And as you had not flashed anything new, the rom/kernel you used had the sds problem. Had you recieved stock updates or had you flashed any latest rom your device would most probably be working.
Now the good news is, as I said, samsung has no way of learning whether your phone was rooted or not. A soft brick is when your phone is in a bootloop. A hardbrick means it wont't turn on, won't do anything at all. Your phone is hardbricked in a way. So a samsung engineer would be as powerless to turn your phone on in this condition as you are. And thus, you would be under warranty.
The bad news is, yes, all the data on your internal storage is gone. The phone you would be provided would be a new factory reset model altogether. That is of course, if the problem is sds, as it seems right now. Even if the problem is different, something smaller, a factory reset is what you will get in all probability, so no chance of saving the data.
I am really sorry for your data, and I know it doesn't help when I play Captain Hindsight, but you should have made a titanium and nandroid backup at the very least. Do that for your next phone regularly. It is the most useful aspect of rooting your phone if you ask me.
Of course, I could be wrong here. The problem could be something smaller. I suggest you throw this problem @dr.ketan on this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1896696
He knows a lot more than I do and can confirm this.
Also, do press thanks if I helped

[Q] Major problem with my stock ATT E980

Okay, I originally got this phone as an upgrade over my HTC Inspire in July. It worked great, minus a few random reboots every once in a while (if I left it in my pocket for a long time or if it was really hot in my car it would do this, but that was it). Then, about a month or two ago, I rooted it and installed a custom ROM. I noticed that a bunch of my files were missing from my internal SD card, but I wasn't too worried about it. Then my phone started acting really weird and got stuck in a bootloop. I was able to boot into recovery, but I ended up using the LG Flash Tool and went back to bone stock. Still had the issue, except I noticed that my signal would drop, and then it'd get stuck in the bootloop. So, I contacted AT&T warranty and they sent me a replacement. Now the same thing is happening to this one. It gets warm, loses cell signal, then reboots, sometimes a bootloop. This phone hasn't been rooted at all, it's been left stock. So I contacted AT&T and the guy in warranty said he thinks it's the battery, but he didn't have any in stock so he couldn't send a replacement. So I was thinking it was the battery and called LG after it seemed to get worse. They told me that they could replace the battery free of charge if I send in the one I'm using first. Since this is my only way of communication, I contacted AT&T again, and they're sending me another replacement. (Said if this one screw up too, they'll give me a different phone all together). The guy had me download some AT&T remote support app and he looked at the battery health and said it's reading fine, and that because it's reading fine, he didn't think it was the battery. :|
Here's the weird thing, about two weeks ago, it went into a bootloop. I took out the battery for a minute an tried to put it back in. Nothing. I plugged the charger into it and it basically told me that it didn't have enough juice to power on. (battery was at ~40%). So I took the battery back out and tried again. This time it came on.
Then last friday, I was jammin out to music while I was working, it would reboot when I unlocked the phone. (battery was in upper 90%'s). I plugged the charger in while it did this and everything came up as it should. But after taking it off the charger and trying to do more work, it happened again and again.
Like I said, this phone is straight from AT&T and has not had anything flashed onto it by me, hell I never even disabled all the AT&T bloat this time. I've tried a hard reset, and it didn't help. Does anybody know what would be the cause of my problems? I really like this phone and really hope I can get this figured out.
EDIT: Forgot to mention, the phone still has its IMEI number and it has the value pack update.
Got the second replacement in the mail today. It hasn't screwed up yet, but only time will tell.

Wow hope this works for you. I just got 3 Optimus G Pro's on 12/30/13 and all 3 of them to date have not had any issues. 2 black and 1 white. 2 which are running stock. 1 stock which has had a bunch of the bloatware yanked (that we could get off of it). 1 stock which has had nothing pulled, everything left the way it is. And the 3rd one (which is the one I use) which I rooted to CyanFox 4.4.2 and later to CM11 4.4.2 Nightly and haven't had any issues like the ones you've explained.
Good luck though hopefully your issue is gone. Seems like a nice reliable phone (minus LG not wanting to support it furthermore ).

I really hope my issues with this phone are done too, I really love this phone. If I don't have any issues, it's going to get rooted and updated to KitKat. Otherwise, I'll try to get AT&T to give me a MotoX or a HTC One.

Yeah I like this phone with KitKat. Looks like a larger Nexus 5
Only problems i'm having with CM11:
1. ATT Visual Voicemail will install but upon playing voicemails program will freeze and crash
2. Tried Google Voice however you can only hear the voicemails through speakerphone, headsets, or bluetooth. Voicemails will no play through earpiece.
3. CM11 doesn't have Screen Recorder yet (Which CyanFox did although CM11 is still fairly fresh).
4. I would like to have the LG Camera app back! Dual video recording and some of those other features are gone with the android stock Camera app. Need to look into porting that back over to KitKat (if I can).
That's bout it though...

Haha yeah, this phone is beautiful with stock Android, I just end up missing certain touches that LG puts in their overlay.
BTW, this phone is doing the same thing as before. I strongly believe it's the battery b/c when it went into a bootloop, I took out the battery it was warm, so I put it in front of the AC for a minute to cool it down and it's been working fine since. So, I'm going to call AT&T and see if they will send me a battery, and if they can't, I'm going to have to send this one in to LG and be without a phone for a week...:'(
UPDATE: AT&T told me "since we have tried everything else-hard resets, replacement phones- and nothing worked, we will send you a battery since it's the only thing that has stayed persistent through this ordeal. We just got some in stock and are sending one your way. If the problem continues to persist, we will replace the phone again." IT'S ABOUT TIME!!!
Just curious, but what if I continue having this issue after I get my new battery? Should I try a similar mah zero lemon battery or just have att give me a different phone altogether?

i think there is an issue with the battery and whatever cable you use to charge the phone.I had to Lge980 when I used a thin cable I have in my room sometimes it did not charged at all and or shut down itself even when the battery had half charge ,sometimes it showed full charged but if I plugged the phone to a thicker cable connected using the oem charger or a usb 3.0 port at my laptop it showed the real charge level at 1/4 charge.I myself could't do anything since I got the phone second hand but as long as I used thick cable connected to a oem charger usb 3.0 or eben 2.0 I had no had any issues.
how'd it go?

If you want to stay on stock i recommend going to jellybean TOT 10k and rooting and installing a custom recovery back up the rom, and flash hkfriends kernel, and see what happens if you raise or lower your phones voltage, that might be the problem with it rebooting.
THE NEW BATTERY SOLVED THE ISSUE, BUT ONLY FOR A SHORT TIME. I upgraded to an HTC One M8 since, and haven't had hardly any problems with it, aside from the death star's BS

Thanks for the response. I talked to the techs at an AT&T direct service center and they told me it's a common problem with the Optimus Pro. I'm on my third one in 8 months now and this one started randomly powering off within 15 minutes of when I took it out of the box three days ago.

Yeah. My issue was the battery for sure. Make them replace the battery and it should temp solve the issue
From what I read on the first e980 i had these phone tend to have a hardware problem where the power button is creating the same issues as OP. Some refurbished e980s have the hardware problem solved.

[Q] LG G3 Turning Off Problem

I have randomly started experiencing a problem where my device would turn off randomly which has gradually gotten worse to the point where it's stuck in a boot loop sort thing and will shut off randomly during boot then restart.
The problem started by every now and then (sometimes not happening for a day at a time) the phone would turn off then turn back on again gradually getting worse. The problem started when I installed the latest update during the update the screen froze (no it was not interrupted in anyway and done officially through the phone) so after leaving it overnight and it not progressing I took the chance and removed the battery. it then turned on and finished the update without an issue. The phone has since as I explained got into a 'boot loop' sort scenario where it will work if the charger is plugged in but couldn't be a battery issue as doesn't turn off if I put it into download mode. Things I've tried: Doing a complete reset- Still no fix. and now today I entered download mode and re-installed the firmware which was successful but still no prevail?! What the hell could this be?! Thanks

Maybe it's a hardware issue
hi, where did you get the firmware? it could be corrupted. if I were you I would download again the firmware and reflash it.
after that I'll do a hard reset.

Well i guess im not alone as i have the same exact problem as you do! WHich version do you have? I have the White T-Mobile version and i bought it the same week it was on sale i felt that i got a phone that was part of a bad batch because of some problems ive had with it but i didnt buy insurance for it. i was on LG's OS and it started to get worse and worse so i restored it and went to a lollipop rom. its still happening but it only reboots once. however, as soon as i start using apps it reboots on me. i want to unroot it but at the same time i dont want to go through the trouble of rooting it again. Any ideas of what it could be?
My problem just randomly started happening and i noticed this started happening strangely after my phone completely died on me and didnt want to turn on so i connected it to the charger and it started charging but had a yellow warning triangle somewhere on the screen.

Hey, nice to hear someone has the same issue, I however hvent had the yellow warning triangle come up yet, as an update all of a sudden it keeps turning off as soon as it boots even on charge!!!??? It just keeps getting gradually worse?! However I have noticed the battery % it shows when turned off is 100% and very randomly it displays 70% then when the phone boots it will show 2% for the 2 seconds it stays on before it dies?!

Wait now it reboots on you even if its charging? I too started noticing that with my battery . if I turn it off and charge it it and lets say it says its at 75% well I turn it on and its like at 40%? I really don't want to buy another battery but I actually hope the battery is the culprit. There's a guy with a G3 in my school I'm going to see if he let's me try his battery out on my phone I'll keep you posted

Hey sorry for taking so damn long on replying i've been busy studying for some exams.
I've got good news for you though, i took my phone in to T-Mobile and showed them my problem. Without me putting much effort into persuading them, they shipped me a new phone, and no i didn't pay for insurance on T-Mobile, this was covered by LG's 1 year Manufacturers warranty!
Anyways, I received the device but did not receive a battery. So i tried my battery on the new one and what do you know? SAME PROBLEM!
So yea you should either try to unroot the phone and take it to the store but don't mention that you think its the battery, they'll send you a new phone! Then just buy a battery online or call them after a few days and say your problem is still occurring with the new phone and see if they send you a replacement battery, im a little skeptical on this second option as id rather keep this new phone haha

Hi, even i am having this problem, my phone is a D855 and in my country (Mozambique) i am not using a contract so its different than US, we have a LG store here but in the LG website our country is not stated. So only way is to go to a trusted Store that repairs phone here. My question is that, when its not connected in the charger it just keeps reboting (the notification LED doesnt even blink) infinite times. At first i thought it was a software but after going from Stock to Cloudy to CandyRom the problem was still there. Then after i plugged in a charger the phone would succesfully boot up and i could use it normally but had to stay connected on a charger. So what have you done to fix this? Did you replace the battery with a new one and then it stopped rebooting?? Please help me as i want to buy a new battery but first want to confirm if its the battery at fault....

Hello buddy, sorry for taking so long to reply. Im usually not on XDA too much. Yes i solved my issue with a new battery. I tried my bad battery on 2 lg g3s and it rebooted both. I also unrooted my phone and flashed a completely stock update and was still having that issue.
I hope my response isnt too late for you!
No problem bro! Got a new battery and do far my phone doesnt reboot, but the only problem i am having is that my phone shutsdown at 30% battery and when trying to turn on it says it has 0%

Im having the same problem gotba new battery and no different so annoying
Best thing just happened. I had the G3 for a while and my first one had an issue and had to get a warranty replacement. Long story short... I got two more G3s from T-Mobile that were defective and most carries have a policy where if you get 3 warranty replacements you can chose a different phone. To wrap it up, you can ask for a phone of equal or lesser value when purchased from the carrier (I bought mine off eBay and they didn't even notice, I spoke to several reps and no one caught on.) So they can either send you a whole new phone, a new battery, or in my case: I received a new LG G4 since I had gone through three which pretty much anyone can do with a bad battery.
Guys. Im having this same exact problem on my LGG3!!!
Expired Battery or Faulty Power Button could be the culprit
This issue just started happening to my LG G3 over the last 2 weeks. I've had my LG G3 for exactly 15 months and all of a sudden it started cycling endlessly and if it did get to my locked screen and i tried to unlock it it would just restart again.
I found that when I plugged in the device to a wall charger or high power power brick, it would halt the reboots but otherwise it would get stuck in an endless cycle of partial reboots (when it did stop after plugging in, I would find all my apps still open and waiting for me, so they weren't real power cycles).
One of my coworkers has a newer LG G3, so we swapped batteries and immediately he had the cycling issue on his phone and with his battery in my phone the issue vanished.
On closer inspection, my battery was a few months past its expiration (FYI to anyone with a LG G3 - your battery will expire more or less exactly as its warranty protection does!), so went and bought a new battery and everything is fine now.
For those of you who have tried replacing the battery and find it still occurs, another coworker said his wife had a similar issue on a different device and it was resolved by having the power button replaced, so it is possible that this could be a factor also and you should have your phone sent in for inspection/repair.
Hope this is helpful for some of you.

I've had the same issue since February, when my phone was about 17 months old. It kept turning off saying SIM card not detected. I tried replacing the SIM card and washing that area with alcohol with no luck. Then I replaced the battery with a second one that came with the phone which I'd never used, but I noticed no difference. It also has no phone service for several hours without my knowledge. LG just told me to reset the phone, but it looks like that doesn't work from what I've read. T-Mobile said they'd give me a new phone but there are no G3s in stock and offered me a Samsung 3, which is three years old, so I am worried that it won't be able to handle the software updates. It's ridiculous that a phone that costs this much won't even last long enough for me to pay it off. My last phone was an Iphone, which I had for more than four years.
I had the exact same problem a few weeks ago, posted a detailed explanation of the problem and got 0 replies and a few hundred views (thanks guys!)
Easy answer:
Replace your battery
Thats what I did, and the problem is now gone. When you do get a new battery make sure you drain it completely first, then charge it for 4 hours without exceptions.
I tried factory resetting, installing a new firmware, going to stock and going to custom but nothing worked.
The girl in the shop where i bought the battery surprised me, i just asked her if they had one available and her immediate reply way "why, is your g3 stuck in a boot loop?", apparently EVERY SINGLE PERSON that bought a g3 battery from them had the exact same issue.
Now the problem is gone, and my phone actually lasts longer than before.

Hey, I am having the EXACT same issue. LG G3 was stuck in an endless loop, replaced the battery, now it works down to about 30% and shuts off. When I try to restart it says 0%. I even tried a third different battery, and still getting that 30% shutdown. Did you ever figure out what it was? I am wondering is it something to do with how the phone reads the battery charge i.e. does it think the battery is dead when it gets to 30%? It has e stumped!! Any advice would be most welcome. Thanks.
wtf, actually same with my LG G3,after when I bought a new battery. Shutsdown at 30% and it says has 0%.
