Paypal Here or Square on the KFHD - 8.9" Kindle Fire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I'm evaluating the possibility of using a rooted Kindle Fire HD 8.9 as a giving kiosk for my charity. Neither company lists the Kindle Fire as a supported device.
I do not have access to a rooted fire to test and am interested to know if anyone can say for sure if one of these card swipes will work. My first pick is Paypal, as I already have paypal as a source for our website and would value expanding that one service rather than piece mailing a second service into the financial flow.

I'm not going to be home until some time tomorrow, but I could check Square, as I have one sitting around.
If the app is on the Amazon store, I don't see why not. To my knowledge, it should be compatible with any device that uses a 3.5mm jack and has access to the app. Even it it isn't on the store, I'm sure it could still be installed.
I'll check it tomorrow for you. Mine isn't rooted as of yet, as I just got it quite recently. Don't have access to the PayPal one or any other alternatives, though I think they work similarly, and if square works, PayPal should work.
Best of luck with PayPal working.

could not find PayPal Here in Amazon appstore
got the apk from my phone, and installed the latest version of PayPal Here on my rooted Kindle Fire HD 8.9
the app is unable to detect my card reader..

[Q] Unregisterable kindle fires on ebay?

Hi guys!
I don't know if I should post it here but if it's in the wrong section i'd request the mods to move it to the appropriate section. I'm recently getting into the tablet market as I'll be needing it for college soon (I'd rather spend more on the laptop than the tablet), I'm considering the original kindle fire since well its cheap and has lots of custom roms to go with it (plus I don't need extra features such as the front camera and store most of my stuff on the cloud anyways).
So I was looking on ebay some of the kindles are being sold for around $110-120 being unregisterable, what does that mean? and will I be able to flash a custom rom on it and use google play? Is it worth it to buy that?
Thank you!
It means they are blacklisted by amazon according to serial number so you will have no access to the Amazon market. Which really means nothing if you're going to just flash a rom on it. Then you can use the Google Android Market instead. IMO its a little high for a blacklisted device that's what I think you should pay for a fully functional 1st gen. device heck a second gen basic kindle is 159.00 70-80$ would be much better considering its dysfunction.

[Q] Modding US Kindle Fire in UK?

Hello there. Long time lurker trying to make head or tail of what I can do with my US-purchased Kindle Fire. I've read a bunch of the guides, but all I can find is stuff about unbricking a KF. Mine works fine, if a little slow. I just need to change the OS on it.
It's a launch day item purchased from Best Buy in Chicago by a friend who lives there, and I've been running it since then here in the UK. I can get certain UK Amazon store things, but nothing that exciting. I've been using random app stores that don't appear to have been updated for months now, and I can't get videos to work on it at all.
As I've treated myself to an iPad 4 for Christmas, I've got no qualms about fiddling with the Kindle Fire now. It's slow, doesn't respond to touch inputs very well and crashes almost every time I use the keyboard now. Also did I mention it's slow?
tl;dr: Is it possible to load a "standard" UK image of the Kindle Fire software on my device so it will work with the UK Amazon app store?
Or: What other OS image would you recommend I load to improve the performance of the device? I don't really mind about not being able to get my Amazon content as I've only got books on there, and my Kindle 3G is still going strong.
Also, do I need to buy one of these "factory" cables do be able to do this? Or any other hardware?
Many thanks for your help.
Still can't find if it's possible to load a "standard" UK image for a Kindle Fire onto my device. Any help greatly appreciated.
Anyone know of a standard KF rom that exists to load?
Tried a few of the ROMs on here, but it still wants me to have a US billing address for the store.
Should I just try a "stock" ROM? Does this one work ok? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041694
what system version is installed now?
This one: http://www.modaco.com/topic/350682-14-jun-gr9-631-modaco-custom-rom-for-the-kindle-fire/
I thought that'd be the best as the OP is from the UK, but it appears to still want me to have a US account. Is there a UID that's tied to something at the Amazon end that I will never be able to change, perhaps?
Trying that stock JB ROM now, but I'd prefer a proper Amazon Kindle build, if possible.
I'm guessing that the kindle Fire 1, was official USA only and locked to the USA Amazon.

No, it was released in the UK, just a few months behind the US.
Trying that JB one now, but it's just sticking on "updating partition details" for ages. Broken? I've left it for about 15 mins doing that.

Where is that list? My mother bought one when they came out in the UK, and it looks exactly the same as mine.
TWRP v2.6.3.1
Thanks.
Kindle Fire 1 RELEASE DATE: NOV 15, 2011
Kindle Fire 2 RELEASE DATE: SEP 14, 2012
On the outside the 1 and 2 look identical, slightly different hardware and software.
Easiest way to check is software versions, and software is not compatible.
TWRP v2.6.3.1 is not compatible with Jellybean(CM10) or lower
Have a custom recovery installed, such as TWRP 2.2.x.x+ or Cannibal Open Touch:

the last one that is labeled Kindle Fire is the 2.
that is not proof of anything but on usa site http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=201263780 both the 1 and 2 are listed
You could try changing the build.prop from us to uk.
not sure if that would fix it or not but may.
You will need a file manager with root access I like Root Browser app and it's free in play store
open root browser>navigate to /system/build.prop>edit>select a text editor>
change line 26 ro.product.locale.region=US to ro.product.locale.region=UK
save>reboot
Thanks. In the end I left the "plain" JB Rom loading overnight, came back in the morning and rebooted the device, and it's loaded up.
I guess if I can't get a proper Kindle ROM, then this is the best thing for it. Unless there's a newer ROM it will run? Guessing not, as it's fairly old hardware.
Still, I'm pretty happy with this, hopefully will get the Play Store running on it this evening and be able to download some games for my kid.
Don't know if this will help but just found it.
localizing your KF
Thanks very much - looks like a good way of changing the language, but still no app store - which is the main problem I had before.
I'm still using it on the stock ROM now, and have all the apps I need, so very happy with it. Even if it is glacially slow compared to the wife's iPad!

How to avoid being an amazon Prime Membership on fire TV?

Hi,
Although I have set Amazon Instant Video PIN and parental control for my fire TV, when my son clicked the movie on the top of fire TV's home, It asked him to "sign up for prime", then I was charged 99$ on my credit card. In fact, I have ordered the Netflix and Huluplus. I don't want to be an amazon Prime Membership now.
So how to avoid being an amazon Prime Membership on my fire TVs?
I mean It's easy to cancel the prime membership on amazon website. I am afraid my son would click the prime movie, then "sign up the prime" again. Do you have a naughty boy? how do you avoid to be an Amazon prime membership again and again.
thanks

Amazon should waive it. Like the above poster said, contact them.
I never set parental controls but if you go to a pc and login to Amazon you can set a pin. Right now you have one click payment set. Same thing happened to me and my son ordered prime. It's way too easy to spend money with this box. I'm surprised it's not set up to order physical goods on the Amazon site.

Did you miss my post? Go to your computer, login to amazon, find the "one click payment" option and disable it. You'll set a pin. Unless your son guesses correctly, you won't be subscribed to prime and no movie or TV purchases will occur without your consent.
Might be another way but that's how I did it.

Hi, Klit75
Thanks, you save my life.
last night I asked the Amazon support, they don't know this trick, Maybe they don't want to tell me at all.
I have set up the 1 click as your instruction, can you confirm the result, is it successful? the result refers to the attach picture.
By the way, I have also set up the Pin and parental control
thanks again.
Wow! You just discovered something there! Naturally I assumed disabling one click might payment would fix the issue with kids ordering stuff but apparently it doesn't apply to digital goods. That is messed up! I'm out now but I'm gonna look into it more and maybe look at the parental settings on the aftv. I'll say this, if I can't stop one click payments I'll just pull the funding source. It'll be a hassle if I ever want to buy something but honestly I think this is kind of shady business practices. They're counting on impulse buys. Got nothing to do with the customer',s convenience. Though I have no doubt that'll be the response. Thanks and sorry. I had no idea.

just to make sure, for those with prime, google "amazon pin" and find where you enable a pin for amazon prime purchases. then from you fire tv or fire tv stick go to parental controls and enable it. use the same pin and disable video and app purchases. For those who have not purchased prime it may be just setting up parental controls from the firetv only but I may be wrong.
Another trick I use is to register a nearly-depleted gift card as my primary Amazon card (has less than $3 remaining on it). If someone tries to purchase something, more than likely the card will have insufficient funds and the purchase attempt will get rejected (and I'll get notified).

I just figured it out right before reading this post.
@blackantt , we were half way there. Set a pin on Amazon account THEN GO to parental controls on aftv. It's self explanatory from there and should ask for the pin you created.

They haven't yet. I've been doing this ever since fireTV came out. Why should they disable my account? I have a valid card on file with them (even if its value is <$4)
Something I haven't tried is using a credit card test code as a default payment method. Developers use these dummy account codes that are accepted as valid input.
Since I can't post a link <sigh>, try searching for "credit card test code".

Fire TV or Something else...

So I already have one FireTV that I bought pretty shortly after it came out. Because of that I was able to prevent it from updating and also was able to root it and unlock it. I've been very happy with this device but I'm looking to acquire a second device and that's my problem. With the state of the FireTV now it seems that it is unrootable and potentially brickable with the way Amazon is treating it. Also, I'm concerned that the future may hold a device that can't have apps sideloaded as well. My primary use for the device is Kodi/XBMC, Netflix, and Plex, though I do have prime and occasionally use prime instant video as well and I pretty much prioritize my use in that order. I suspect if I went with something such as an Amlogic M8 or some other android box that I'd have to give up the Amazon services.
So I guess my question is, how does the FireTV hardware compare to the others? Is it a lot better than something like the M8 box? I'm not really a dev, though I'm extremely comfortable with android flashing and such as well as linux, so I'm also wondering are the devs optimistic that they'll be able to hack around Amazon's attempts to block us? Or is it looking more like a lost cause? I noticed work being done on a CM12 port but if I buy a brand new fire tv that can't be rooted then it would seem I'll be limited in what I can do or flash with it.
I'm looking for opinions or feedback so all thoughts and suggestions are welcomed. Thank you!
Of all the android devices, I'd say the FireTV is still the best bang for the buck. The next step up would be a Chromebox running OpenElec, but I haven't attempted it myself.
I like my fire tv, but basically use Kodi to watch everything . so all of the features of the actual amazon rom go unused.. Save yourself the money and get a CS918 , box for ~$50 off ebay.. its easily rootable, works on any type TV, has wifi, bluetooth and ethernet.. also has 2 usb ports and an sd micro slot.
The advantage of Fire TV is the remote which is very nice in touch and has enough buttons for Kodi. I don't know how are the remotes on other similar devices but Nexus Player remote is very bad (hard plastic, very bad in touch and so few buttons).

Would that box at least do Netflix? It looks like that box is about 2 years old or so now too.
Does anybody know if you can install the Amazon appstore and then instant video on these other boxes?

Im all for trying new boxes, but seems right now fire tv is the one to stick with. I say right now because there are new ones coming this year. Imo its not the time to buy.
This new update really improved aftv. I wouldnt worry about them taking away sideloading or kodi.
Yes. Im sure you can sideload prime on the Android tv box but not certain itll be great because those apps are made for tablets. If youre hooked on prime, i dont know of a better option than aftv right now.

I do like the fire TV remote, but there are better remotes you can buy for $15-20.. you can have a full remote on one side and full keyboard on the other, with air mouse capabilities.. its still cheaper to get a cs918 and a decent remote.. and still be able to root. have apps such as STB emulator work properly (without external players). play many games with the air mouse or by configuring buttons on the keyboard.

Netflix on those china boxes will be stuck at 480p resolution. You will never get HD with any of those china boxes.

Side-loading is not going to be blocked. Amazon wants you to be able to do that so every FireTV is a potential dev/test box, and they have instructions on their site showing how to do it.
IMHO, FireTV is currently the best option for what the OP describes. If Amazon Instant Video (Amazon Prime support) makes it to GATV boxes, one of those may be better. The nvidia shield console looks really good, and even the Razer Forge TV looks like an improvement over the Nexus Player. Both of those are expected soon.
If Amazon Prime Streaming is important a original Amazon hardware is still better than a regular Android device with installed app from the store. The point is at least for the german market there are restrictions for movies with a high maturity rating. For e.g. in germany FSK18 movies (I think can be compared to a "NC-17 (Adults Only)" rating in the U.S.) won´t play with the Android app and are blocked since PIN handling is not supported. On Fire TV tablets it is also possible to download many movies for offline use for 48h and this is not possible with the regular Android app.
Concerning the remote the aTV does use a Bluetooth RC and not an Infrared RC so it is possible to hide the aTV for e.g. behind the TV and it is still usable. This is difficult with an IR remote if there is not an external IR eye with a connection cable extension.
Does anybody know if people are having good luck buying a unit off the shelf at like Best Buy or Staples and getting an older firmware? I was thinking I might get lucky buying one off a shelf that has (hopefully) been there a while and I could block updates to it and get it rooted.
Have a look on the serial. It may hint if a device can be rooted:

aren't most android box's NOTORIOUSLY having over-heating issues.. the reason I went with "firetv" was that reputation.. is this one of e'm that's fine?
sure for people that overclock them... my CS918 feels as warm as my fire tv to the touch... I am sure, however that with a more inferior device, there is a higher chance to get a lemon, but you return it in that case..
My point is, if all your doing is buying a fire TV to sideload apps and do things it was never meant to do... why not just buy a device that is easily rootable, and easier to work with., for half the cost.
Most of those cheap Android boxes are based on Rockchip chipsets (similiar to those used in many low cost tablets) which are not really competitive. Of course they are less restricted than the aTV but it is still not good a replacement when you are using Prime streaming or apps which need more power or memory. For me the price was also not an argument since I bought my aTV for 49€. Those Rockchip boxes do cost more from around 59€ to 79€ with a hardware which is poor compared to the aTV. Most of them are sold for e.g. only as 1GB variant which is half of the memory of the aTV and are missing Bluetooth.
So it depends IMHO on the intended use of such a STB and also with the restricted FireOS environment the aTV is a really good Android STB.
I beg to differ, inexpensive doesnt mean not as good.
My CS918 works perfectly with Kodi. Its chipset has much more community support, STB emulator works perfectly with it without the need for an external player.. Addon devices such as air remotes work better as it uses default mapping, where the fire tv does not..
To each there own.. if your using amazon services heavily, of course the fire tv is better. but if they are secondary to Kodi, just buy the cheaper box, that has more support, and install the amazon plugin for kodi...
I have mine set to use Kodi as the launcher, added Genesis plugin (set on auto) and set up libraries correctly, added stalker plugin for live tv.. added icon to STB emulator as an alternative, and added an icon to bring up the app list... i never have a reason to leave kodi.. all the media i could ever need and still run any android app, much more smoothly than on a unrootable fire tv...

send them a question. I sure hope its new as mentioned. why would someone sell at retail after tampering. ? lets see what I get. Mine has not yet shipped out.
when you hear back. let us all know.
My $.02
I have a lot of different devices. FTV's, Rokus, Android minipc's, chromecast.. etc.. In my opinion - the FTV's are easily the best value. The hardware is very very snappy, and I think they did a pretty good job in design. I am even a little impressed with the capabilities of the scaled-down FTV Stick.
I have a plex server, and between the plex app on FTV, Netflix, and Amazon Prime, my bases are essentially covered by the stock platform. I do have kodi which I use a lot personally.. I dont make use of all the available streaming tv channels etc in kodi, but Its fun to "tinker". The beautiful thing is, you can do both.. The stock platform is perfect for others in my household who arent into all the gadgetry, but just want to get to their programs and have them play, and I can run Kodi and do my own thing.
There are a few things that I think could be improved. - The remote is small, and all black, which is sleek, but it makes it a little more difficult to locate and manipulate in the dark. The layout isnt as intuitive to the touch as say the Rokus. It also has no loop to attach a lanyard. I would attach a small strap to the remote if I could to help me keep track of it. That thing seems very easy to lose These are small nits.. but if your complaints about a device are on this tiny scale, you must be pretty happy with the device overall.

Amazon Underground - not working on stock Amazon Fire Phone

'Amazon Underground' was just rolled out. Underground makes some paid apps available for free, and also makes some games with in app purchases completely free. All of the *underground* apps are unavailable on my Fire Phone, even if their regular versions work on my Fire Phone. There is also a separate Underground app that can be installed, but that app will not install on my Fire Phone. Has anyone else had similar experiences?
Underground not working on fire phone
Hi, I too did face the same issue however the same underground app is working fine on Samsung Galaxy S5. Bit weird that not working on Amazon's own phone. Called Mayday but that didn't help solve the issue. Anyone found a way to load Underground on fire phone, please share the trick. Thanks.
I think it will get rolled out as an update to the stock Amazon app. If you've disabled updates like me you won't get it.

Curiously Amazon is not offering the Free APP on their Amazon APP Store anymore!
But unfortunately you can not directly install this new "Underground" APP on the Fire Phone!!
So as Ratbags already has suggested, I really hope it will get rolled out as an update to the stock Amazon app directly...
Just FYI. Not installing on Kindle Fire HD7 as well. Amazon dumb.

Thanks Bingo Bronson for the information!
Please, could you or anyone here post the "Amazon Underground" APP version, that you said it works on stock FireOS and has been auto updated by the OS?...
Just to compare and see if it is the same version v5.8.0.200, First Release of "Amazon Underground" by Amazon Mobile LLC...
Do you or anyone, that has installed or has received the update, have or know if there is a direct download link, to get the "Amazon Underground" APP?
--------
Edit: I just receive the following reply from amazon, about the availability of the "Amazon Underground" APP for the Fire Phone:

Amazon Underground - Not working on Fire Phone
Haha, yeah - I wasn't too happy when I contacted Mayday & was told that the Fire Phone it turns out - isn't compatible with the Amazon Underground App. I'm one of the 5 people who actually owns the Fire phone, and was offered 5000 Amazon coins as compensation for not having a phone compatible... funny how an Amazon phone doesn't work with the Amazon Underground App store... burned - yet again for owning a Fire Phone... luckily I also own a Nexus 5 (though it's on its last leg) and am able to get the Underground app there... $50 in Amazon coins isn't too bad though... it kinda sucked though that I had to spend 40 minutes and be transferred 3 times...

I really do not understand how all the "Amazon Prime" users are now going to download, on their Fire Phones, the offers or Free APPs from the Amazon-APP-Store??
I really think that now we are stuck, because we can not install this new* "Amazon Underground" APP, and neither can we receive the usual daily Free APP!!!
What's going on?
Is the New "Amazon Undergroun" APP only compatible with all other brands cellphones and not with their own Amazon Fire Phone!?
Me: Is it true I can't get the new Amazon Underground app on my Fire Phone?
Sathish: Hello, my name is Sathish. I'm here to help you today.
Please allow me a minute or two, while I look into this for you.
Me: ok
Sathish: Thanks for waiting Distearth.
Fire phone does not support Amazon Underground at this time. I’m sorry for any inconvenience this may cause.
This is a very new app and in the first stage it is only released to android devices.
There is no need to worry this app will be available even on kindle and fire phone very soon.
As a one-time good will gesture, I’ve requested 5000 Amazon Coins to be applied to your Amazon account.
Me: That's Great! Thank you!
But it is coming to Fire Phone, yes?
Sathish: Yes, but it will take some time.
Now oyur coins balance is 5,086 coins
Me: You rock! I'll keep a lookout for the new app. Thanks again.
Sathish: You're welcome! Thank you for contacting Amazon, Have a good night.
Please click on the "END CHAT" button at the top right corner of this window to close the chat. Thanks

Amazon 'compensation' for Fire phone
Hi,
I'm not a developer but stumbled across this thread after having the same problem (not being able to install Amazon Underground on Fire phone)
Maybe I just got a poor customer service person but I called Amazon earlier, was told that
the phone is incompatible with Amazon Underground but (unlike others here) was told there are no plans to roll it out for Fire phone - I wish Amazon would get their story straight and have some consistency!
To add insult to injury I did not get offered any Amazon coins by way of compensation, was offered precisely nothing! After finding this thread I called them back and asked for 5000 coins which they have agreed to. Not sure there's anything I want to buy with them but it's the principal of course!

This is a really strange and weird situation!
To some Fire Phone users, Amazon has Said that the Underground APP is not supported and will not be available for the Fire Phone... And to others Fire-Phone users, Amazon has Said that we do not need to worry, because this app will be available on kindle and fire even phone very soon!
So now I really do not know what or who to believe!
I think Amazon should officially, make a statement about it to avoid this kind of confusion...
Sahil: Hello, my name is Sahil. I'm here to help you today.
Me: That's previous conversation on top. Last representative just disconnected from me without giving me any answers. That was very rude.
Sahil: Andrey, I'm really sorry for the hassle you've faced on your previous chat conversation.
Please do not worry, I'll surely help you with your concern regarding Amazon Underground.
I would like to inform you that Amazon Underground is currently available on 3rd and 4th generation Fire tablets on the latest software build, Android Phones and BlackBerry devices using the latest version of Amazon Underground app.
I'm sorry but currently, it is not available for on Fire Phone.
Me: When will it be available for Fire phone? And shouldn't fire phone be one of the first to get it?
Sahil: I would like to inform you that Amazon Underground is a recent addition to Amazon service catalog and the developers are already working on expanding it to more countries and devices.
I understand Fire Phone is an Amazon device and it should be available on it like its available on Kindles. I'm forwarding this as your feedback to the team concerned on priority so that they can look into this and make it available on Fire Phone as well.
For you, I'm forwarding a request from my end to add 5,000 free Amazon coins to your account and if you are eligible you'll get the coins in the next 3 business days.
Andrey, will that be fine with you?
Me: Yes thank you very much.
Sahil: You are welcome!
Please stay connected with me.
Me: ok
Sahil: Thank you so much for waiting.
Me: No problem
Sahil: I've successfully forwarded the request to add 5,000 coins to your account.
Is there anything else I can do for you today?
Me: That will be it for today. Thank you very much.
Sahil: You are most welcome and its been a pleasure assisting you.
Amazon Underground
Interesting to note that the update to the Fire HD7 last week turned the native store into the underground store by default, all "Actually Free" apps are listed on the Fire HD Store. When I spoke to customer service regarding this issue on my fire phone, they gave me a $5.00 credit to my account.
Well, see 5000 credits is 50 dollars if i'm not mistaking. I still did not receive it. Hopefully tomorrow.
Sent message to Amazon about the lack of any functional Underground for the Fire Phone, was told the comments would be forwarded and handed a $10.00 credit to the account. (Seems very random as to what they give, but hey, $10 extra brings the real cost of the phone now down to $21.00 for me. (I bought it at $159, got a credit back when it was lowered within 7 days of receiving the phone to bring it to $130, now another $10 off - subtract the Prime which was the biggest reason to buy the phone (for me), now down to $21 plus tax. Could just sell the dang thing on eBay for likely more than $21.
Here's my compensation experience:
Me: One last question... While chatting with you I browsed some forums and found that several other customers were offered 5000 coins as compensation. Are you able to extend the same to me?
Them: We are offering 500 Coins. I have added it already.
Exclusive for Fire Phone customers, we are adding 500 Coins.
I did that already and they are added

Thanks for the screenshot, but it only shows the app downloading, not installing. I was also able to download the app but it would not install.

In that case: use Titanium to backup and remove the old (old as in... you get it) "Shop Amazon" app (com.amazon.mShop.android.apk) and see if the install is successful this time.
Since, now we all Amazon Prime members, can not get anymore the Free APP, that Amazon was always offering daily, and the "Underground" APP can not be installed on the Fire Phones, I really think that as already has happened with the FireHD-7 Tablets, that Amazon has replaced the old Amazon APP Store for this new "Underground" APP, Amazon will soon have to release an "Underground" APP compatible with their own Fire Phone!!!
Although we have received very bad news about the possibility that Amazon may have discontinued the Fire-Phone, and has canceled last week all the engineers who designed it, I firmly believe that Amazon is a very responsible company with excellent customer support, and are going to continue the support, and will also update to the newest FireOS-5 (based on Lollipop) the Fire Phone Very Soon !!!
So although much confusion existed, I still believe that Amazon will correct the incompatibility of their "Underground" APP with the Fire Phones !!
