Hello there. Long time lurker trying to make head or tail of what I can do with my US-purchased Kindle Fire. I've read a bunch of the guides, but all I can find is stuff about unbricking a KF. Mine works fine, if a little slow. I just need to change the OS on it.
It's a launch day item purchased from Best Buy in Chicago by a friend who lives there, and I've been running it since then here in the UK. I can get certain UK Amazon store things, but nothing that exciting. I've been using random app stores that don't appear to have been updated for months now, and I can't get videos to work on it at all.
As I've treated myself to an iPad 4 for Christmas, I've got no qualms about fiddling with the Kindle Fire now. It's slow, doesn't respond to touch inputs very well and crashes almost every time I use the keyboard now. Also did I mention it's slow?
tl;dr: Is it possible to load a "standard" UK image of the Kindle Fire software on my device so it will work with the UK Amazon app store?
Or: What other OS image would you recommend I load to improve the performance of the device? I don't really mind about not being able to get my Amazon content as I've only got books on there, and my Kindle 3G is still going strong.
Also, do I need to buy one of these "factory" cables do be able to do this? Or any other hardware?
Many thanks for your help.
Still can't find if it's possible to load a "standard" UK image for a Kindle Fire onto my device. Any help greatly appreciated.
Anyone know of a standard KF rom that exists to load?
Tried a few of the ROMs on here, but it still wants me to have a US billing address for the store.
Should I just try a "stock" ROM? Does this one work ok? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2041694
what system version is installed now?
This one: http://www.modaco.com/topic/350682-14-jun-gr9-631-modaco-custom-rom-for-the-kindle-fire/
I thought that'd be the best as the OP is from the UK, but it appears to still want me to have a US account. Is there a UID that's tied to something at the Amazon end that I will never be able to change, perhaps?
Trying that stock JB ROM now, but I'd prefer a proper Amazon Kindle build, if possible.
I'm guessing that the kindle Fire 1, was official USA only and locked to the USA Amazon.

No, it was released in the UK, just a few months behind the US.
Trying that JB one now, but it's just sticking on "updating partition details" for ages. Broken? I've left it for about 15 mins doing that.

Where is that list? My mother bought one when they came out in the UK, and it looks exactly the same as mine.
TWRP v2.6.3.1
Thanks.
Kindle Fire 1 RELEASE DATE: NOV 15, 2011
Kindle Fire 2 RELEASE DATE: SEP 14, 2012
On the outside the 1 and 2 look identical, slightly different hardware and software.
Easiest way to check is software versions, and software is not compatible.
TWRP v2.6.3.1 is not compatible with Jellybean(CM10) or lower
Have a custom recovery installed, such as TWRP 2.2.x.x+ or Cannibal Open Touch:

the last one that is labeled Kindle Fire is the 2.
that is not proof of anything but on usa site http://www.amazon.com/gp/help/customer/display.html/?nodeId=201263780 both the 1 and 2 are listed
You could try changing the build.prop from us to uk.
not sure if that would fix it or not but may.
You will need a file manager with root access I like Root Browser app and it's free in play store
open root browser>navigate to /system/build.prop>edit>select a text editor>
change line 26 ro.product.locale.region=US to ro.product.locale.region=UK
save>reboot
Thanks. In the end I left the "plain" JB Rom loading overnight, came back in the morning and rebooted the device, and it's loaded up.
I guess if I can't get a proper Kindle ROM, then this is the best thing for it. Unless there's a newer ROM it will run? Guessing not, as it's fairly old hardware.
Still, I'm pretty happy with this, hopefully will get the Play Store running on it this evening and be able to download some games for my kid.
Don't know if this will help but just found it.
localizing your KF
Thanks very much - looks like a good way of changing the language, but still no app store - which is the main problem I had before.
I'm still using it on the stock ROM now, and have all the apps I need, so very happy with it. Even if it is glacially slow compared to the wife's iPad!

Hi,
I recently bought a Kindle Fire HD X43Z60 from the electrical retailer I work at for an absolute bargain price BUT I forgot about the demo mode on it. Now in many of our other tablets at work it's fairly simple to uninstall demo modes but seemingly not the KFHD, and after reading MANY forums and threads and watching LOTS of youtube videos I cannot find a straightforward and also up-to-date way to basically re-install the OS.
I am using Mac OS X Mavericks to do this but can get access to a windows 7 PC if necessary. I've also seen some debate about the success rates of the fastboot cables.
I really want to get this working so I can gift it to someone else especially as it was such a bargain.
Many thanks in advance!

You simply need a fastboot cable. There's an adapter that is even nicer you can just plug in-between a normal cable and the kindle that does the same thing here: http://shop.teamblackhat.info/Factory-Adapters-motadapt.htm
Now here's where i have to ask, is this the 2013 or 2012 kindle hd? You can tell based on if it has a camera. If it does its a 2012, if it doesn't, its a 2013. The 2012 can be restored to a normal os via kindle fire first aid, whereas we just worked out a way to restore a kindle fire hd 2013 so the script just came out i think.

Hi, it has a camera on the front but none on the back so it must be the 2012 model so i just need the adapter then? whats the process once i have the adapter?
thanks for your help
Yes you just need an adapter, once you have that it will kick it into fastboot mode. You may need the drivers in my signature once it is in fastboot mode. Once you have the drivers installed use kindle fire first aid to restore the kindle. Once it does that you should have a fully working os and the ability to flash 2nd bootloader +twrp and another os like cm so you can have a complete android tablet.

hello
did you manage to fix this? i have the same problem having bought a ' 13 ex-demo unit from john lewis earlier this year (without being informed, despite a lengthy conversation with an amazon rep (!) about the pros and cons of fire hd vs paperwhite, that it was going to be like this). i got a fastboot cable made up but it doesn't enable the fastboot. i am interested that you comment that there have been reports of the cables not working. thanks

What does demo mode not allow you to do?
Can you not copy the update to the KF as per the factory reset options on Amazon's support site?

Hi, I want to first thank every body working on this to give us the best experience possible with our aftv boxes.
I know root is currently unavailable for newer aftv versions. So, I was wondering if there is someone currently working on getting that sorted out and if is making any good progress. I wish he/she/they are progressing.
If so, which version is the one is currently being worked on?
PS. Admins, move this to the appropriate forum if needed.
I am also interested by this whole thing, as I got my AFTV from Amazon Germany this week and think that many others will get it from the same batch (unrootable latest version) mine is turned off as I have no way to block the update addresses... It's horror to have a new toy and not be able to play with it...
Of course, I would be willing to test everything you throw at me to get root working
Was thinking of picking up a second Fire TV (my first one is rooted with Xposed and XBMC launcher). I see from your post that new versions from Amazon can't be rooted yet. Anybody know if the ones in Staples are on versions that can't be rooted?

I got mine at staples about two weeks ago. It was the last they one they had at the time, but I was able to root it, no worries.
Yup, I picked one up on Wednesday and was able to root it without issue. They still had a bunch there. Thanks.
What are the chances of getting an Android TV ROM put on the FireTV? Is the partial bootloader unlock that's out there enough to do this?
I'm curious what would happen if the Android TV Launcher was sideloaded on the FireTV? I doubt it would be that easy, but I know it's been possible to get Google Play Store working and linked to your account and the ability to show all apps.
Maybe someone with a little more knowledge can expand on this and what else would have to be packaged together for the TV Launcher to work properly.

My guess is it won't work because it requires lollipop stuff. I am currently working on a lollipop build. I have some time off work so maybe I'll be able to make some progress on it.

I highly doubt that. The kernel that Amazon is using does not have a kitkat branch. Plus they really have no reason to do that.

I'd love to know how successful we expect this to be? Not trying to push or anything, of course, but I'm very curious if we have audio and video acceleration working yet? Having seen this I think I'll pick up another Fire TV, but not sure where best to buy, to have best chance of rooting it? Staples or Amazon?
I've currently got an Amazon Fire TV with your kernel boot menu installed, and would be happy to play about with some CM12 builds if it is helpful to have another users perspective. If the network does not work I have an Android compatible USB ethernet adaptor, and also wifi adaptor.
Thanks!!

He will probably still be making them. It just happens that the latest FW update isn't much of an update Features wise. So no rush for an update. Plus Amazon is getting trickier with the FW too. So patience is a virtue..

As for CM12, it is very far from something flashable. All I have right now is the boot animation and the "updating packages" dialog. Currently my main problem is that none of the required services are starting, so I have to start them manually. Even doing that, I think I'm not starting everything that is required because as it starts loading up things, it dies because storage isn't set up properly, and bypassing that it kinda just hangs starting some android services. I'll have to enable some debug in init tomorrow to see what's going on with that.
As for prerooted, I'll still be making those. To be honest, CM12 is just a fun experiment for me. I probably won't be using it much because I watch a lot of Amazon Prime, and Android TV currently doesn't support it. I didn't really hear anyone saying anything earth shattering is contained in the newest update, and I really need to spend some extra time on it to figure out what's wrong with SuperSU, so that's why I haven't released a new one yet.

So I've gotten A LOT farther than I expected. I thought the kernel would have been a much bigger issue than it turned out to be. Anyway, right now I can get to the stock launcher and it looks like SystemUI is doing a crazy crash loop, so eventually the thing just dies. I'm going to try to get the Android TV launcher worker though. Then deal with SystemUI.
EDIT: Well I got the Android TV launcher starting... not sure what's supposed to happen with it though...
Hi guys,
I have the 7" 5th gen kindle fire and rooted it with rootjunky's tools. Everything went smoothly. I have Android and Google Play on the device now.
I did this about two months ago though. So my question is,, isn't there any firmware updates or different firm wares to put on this?
I checked his site and it looks like the same files I used in December are the only ones still available.
So any suggestions on what I should do? I mean everything is working great,, I guess I'm just looking for something new... Maybe getting kinda bored? I don't know.
Thanks for any and all help

Fire Index: Which Amazon (Kindle) Fire Do I have?
Sent from my KFFOWI using XDA Labs
I just received a brand new Stick a couple days ago and successfully installed Kodi and a VPN. But, I am now interested in messing around with some custom ROMs and at the very least block further Amazon updates. I can't find any solid yes or no answers as to whether this is possible. Could someone point me in the right direction? I am fairly familiar with rooting Android phones and using recovery and custom roms. Fire is new to me.
Thanks!
Edit: I now realize that I probably should have just bought a Gen 1 Stick, but I didn't know that Amazon was actively fighting off modders. I have faith that the Android community will come up with a solution.. if they haven't already.

It seems that there isn't one person who works on finding a root for the fire tv. Is it that they wait for a vulnerability to be found in the Android OS itself before a root is available? I'm just wondering this because of the type of ways people have rooted them in the past. Anyone know?
Looks like my hope lies with zeroepoch and rbox.

There is a prerooted 5.2.4.1 rom available.
Is there no way to install a xustom recovery and load that? Lile with many devices (im looking at you samsung) you have to install twrp and then boot straight to rexovery and flash a rom or your supersu.
Is that not possible with this? I am or else someone would have said it but I have to ask.
Edit. Excuse me.
How do you plan on doubling your money? Selling fully loaded boxes and sticks is illegal and Kodi is pretty much dead.
Illigal? You a lawyer? Is that legal advise? I think its perfectly legal. They literally have dozens of sellers on amazon, ebay, etc. (Not trying to come off smartass, I just dont want any trouble)
And even besides all that, everything I own that has a root folder has access to it. I have a touch of ocd maybe, but I just really want to be able to use a device I paid for to its fullest extent. Since they advertise the specs to their fullest when deciding on a sale price.

I'm just saying be very careful. I've had the FBI at my door and it's not fun. I believe Amazon and eBay are taking down "fully loaded" boxes. I thought your post mentioned selling them. I'm not trying to be an ass just be careful.

Yeah. I had forgotten my manners for a moment. The internet is huge, ya know sometimes I forget which spot I am. I am simply trying to enable all the features of this thing. I use it to replace cable, a few (less than $10 usually) monthly subscriptions to alternate channels can save a ton of money over conventional cable. This is all I was saying.
Is there no way to get into fastboot by using possibly a factory cable? I have one of those that I used for my kindle fires.
