[Q] Having a problem with my "H" and "3G" - Desire HD Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Firstly i would like to apologize if this issue has been treated before but i think i read into the 12th page and nothing yet... i got an htc desire hd a week ago and as at when i got it it was still locked, i didnt see an H sign or a 3g sign and i used it for 4 days before rooting it, i also tried custom roms and flashed my radio, i tried factory reset too and i also made sure my apn settings were correct, i tried switching to airplane mode from the suggestions i got here and i even tried switching to 3G only but it only shows me the bars with an 'X' sign showing that there isnt any signal, while i can still get an H on another HTC very close to it. please if there is anything i didnt do can anyone suggest it to me...any suggestion would be appreciated...sorry if this post offends anyone...if i had known better i wouldn't have put it up.

Is this desire hd or inspire 4g? Both support 3g on different bandwidth? Where are u from? Check with your service provider about the network bandwidth on whic 3g runs.
Thanks doesn't hurt....

It's an inspire 4g...thanks. I checked with with 2 Sims and 2 different providers and still the same thing

I think u need to enable data first. Even u force the network to select 3g, it will not show up in the network bar with data disabled.
Setting > data usage > turn on mobile data. This method is for cm10.1 so use your own discretion on another type of roms.

Inspire 4G was sold in the USA and the international model was the Desire HD. Check if the frequency bands match for USA and the country where you're trying to use the phone. That should give a clue as to why 3g is not being picked up.

Nigeria is 2100 but I don't know that of the phone

And there is nothing I can do about it if the bandwidths differ
Sent from my HTC Inspire 4G using xda app-developers app

Nope.. The Inspire 4G works on below bandwidths
GSM : 850/900/1800/1900 MHz
HSDPA : 850/1900 MHz
While desire hd on 2100 MHz for 3g.
Thanks doesn't hurt....

I finally changed the phone but I don't know how to root this one...any help would be highly appreciated

reception problems

hi all
ive been having trouble with my desire for a while now. im getting very poor signal and not been able to send mms. i was with t mobile but didnt get anywhere with them so i left and signed up to vodafone who brag reaaly strong signal in my area. guess what.... worse then t mobile. i get 1-2 bars max and my 3g constantly drops off to nothing a lot. ive been to htc and vodaphone and still no real help. vodafone are sending me a new sim incase its a problem with mine. has anyone else got a poor signal in a good area? i tried the sim in a different phone and had the same bed reception so i thought it was vodafone but then tried my friends sim in my desire (orange). he had 4 bars in his but in my desire i only got 1-2 again. this would suggest a problem with both lol.
the strange thing about the 3g is everytime i switched it it droped down then off with in a few seconds but i used advanced task killer to kill all apps and my 3g came on straight away and didnt go again. could somthing be blocking it somehow maybe? my reception was still poor but atleast i could get some sort of internet.
im alos finding brown blotches on my battery cover. like the coating is rubbing off. again anyone else had this?
I get a rubbish signal, and have e-mailed HTC support to see about getting my phone replaced/repaired. I only get a 2g signal at work in central London, if I set the network to "WCDMA Only" it can't even detect the network, but when I put my SIM in my old phone (HTC HD) I get 5 bars of HSDPA and around 3mbps data so clearly the phone is the problem and not coverage.

I don't want to root it otherwise I'll end up wasting time flashing different ROMs every week. Besides, I don't see a new radio making a difference when it can't even detect the 3g network and the blackstone gets 5 bars H.
as above im not to keen on rooting too. not that i dont really want to more that i dont know enough to try it. ive read the walk throughs and it sounds easy ish but i dont want risk it. i did the who new rom thing with my hd2 and i was for every changing roms. what im trying to find out is where the problem lies, vodafone or the desire.

Same problem with my desire but only after the ota update last month i think it was. I am also not comfortable rooting yet.

No Service?

I just did s-off and got root with the revolution.
I installed latest Virtuous Unity but now my phone does not see my network. I tried different sim cards. I installed another version (2.35) of Virtuous Unity and here is the same problem. I had to restore the default verizone android OS and there is no network problem: the phone sees the network and sim card. Please help me.
Sorry for my english.
Are you in America on cdma? If not some of the roms don't support gsm for the world phone feature, I don't know if your particular Rom does or not because I haven't used it but that may be the problem.

My wife's incredible, is rooted and has CM7 and I have a new inc 2 unfortunetly with HBOOT 98 but whats annoying is i live downtown in my city... whats annoying is I've 1 bar sometimes NO bars (still 3G just no bars) of service with verizon, I'm going to try and call them tomorrow and figure why my wife and I have lost what used to be great service to.. we're getting random dropped calls. If its a ploy to get people on a 4G network thats fine ill sit on the phone and talk to who ever i need to, to send me a 4G equivilent phone because I'm paying for service that I'm just not getting

I'm from Russia
I know some guys from russian community who used VU and say that fw support gsm. I don't know what I do wrong. Maybe it because I have incorrect s-off and root? (Revolutionary clockwork 4 + superuser.apk)

[Q] I have tried everything.. 3G is still messed up!

Guys this is my last attempt at trying to find the problem with my DHD before sending it to the repair shop—and by repair shop I don't mean an official HTC Reseller which is not available in my country!
Here's what I've been facing for the past month:
Without any warnings, my phone started making weird noises
(interferance sound, as if the signal is very poor) during every phone-call, and dropping the call 1 out of 3 times, when connected to the 3G network. ([Edit] Even when I get 4 bars of 3G reception)
If I set my phone to GSM only mode, the issue disappears.
Also during browsing (or any internet use) the signal keeps switching from 3G & H and by doing so the data connection is EXTREMELY slow(and sometimes non-working).
After trying multiple radios(with their ril's) and different ROMs.. and finally switching to a stock rom(and radio), as well as trying other sim-cards/different network, and still having the same issue over the 3G network; I'm starting to believe it is a hardware issue.
Before I send it to the repair shop (and risk getting back awkwardly put-back phone) I thought I'd try one last time here..
Any advise is greatly appreciated..
Looks like a hardware problem. Does everything work fine with wifi?
Sent from my HTC Desire HD using xda premium
Nothing wrong with your DHD. It's your provider. The area wherevyou live is probably not well covered with 3G since you said you have no issues switching to GSM. If you don't have any WiFi issues then it's not a privlem with the phone or the ROM. It's bad 3G coverage regardless of the provider
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA App
Everything works perfectly--including WIFI--except 3G.
I really hope it isn't a hardware thing, but now I'm 90% sure it is!
I took the phone to the only official reseller of HTC phones in Lebanon.
They told me they'd rather not open the phone up since they've had bad experiences doing so before.
They said issues with the touchscreen usually surface after reassembly.
After googling it seems the gsm antenna is in the sim cover; septate from the 3G one (which i couldn't find any pictures of where it is in the phone)

1. Don't panic.
2. As I explained before, I'm 99% sure it has nothing to do with hardware. Do you know someone with the same or similar issue?

I've tried different locations :/
As i said before, also prior to all that, it was working fine..
I tried my Sim card on a different phone and it works just fine.
I tried a different SIM (same and different providers) the problem persisted.
Still, i really hope u're right!

3g sim vs 4g sim

I have searched the internet and the forums and I can not get a clear difference between the 4g sim that comes with the phone and the 3g one that came with my g1. Could this be why my network speeds are so low? .5-2mbps
there is no such thing. There is only a simcard that is wifi calling enabled and one that is not.

I honestly think this topic is debatable. I used to have an HD2 which I got back when it first came out which was what, ~3 years ago? Anywho, after I got my SGSII via mail I simply just swapped out the SIM cards thinking it would make no difference. The thing with the old sim is that it would constantly drop connection and the ping was ridiculously high. When the SIM card was placed back into the HD2, data worked perfectly fine as intended. I activated the new SIM after a few days and voila, data was properly working on the SGSII.
guess one way to make sure and take a trip to the tmobile store on my lunch break... I will report back if any difference occurs... any other test i should preform besides a speed test?
I've been using the same Sim from my mytouch 3g,, then 4g,, then sensation and now this beast i'm hitting 10-18mb down when my sensation and mytouch 4g only would hit 2-6mb down in exact same location

signal loss/dropped internet access on T-mobile UK when switching to orange.

So I phoned tmob up to request that I be opted out of their orange 2g fallback when there is no 3g signal as it was causing my phone to totally disconnect while it switched over. Very annoying as it could take a good few seconds to log back on, causing streams to be interrupted etc. not to mention calls dropping. Anyway they told me its not possible to opt out anymore, but to call HTC to see if there is a setting to allow blocking of orange. HTC said type *#*#4636#*#* in the dialer to enter test mode and switch the phone to wcdma only instead of preffered, to prevent the phone from using oranges 2g network. I'm just wondering if this is any different to selecting that option via the regular personalize menu as this option is there also. I did what HTC recommends and I haven't had the phone disconnecting at all since I called 2 days ago, although now I seem to be using orange 3g and hspa networks along with Tmobile. Maybe this helps people that have the same problem or have tried the regular settings to avoid using 2g in the UK. Any comments or similar experiences please share, sorry if thread is in the wrong section btw!

Quite a useful diagnostic menu. Don't know if that code was previously known

There shouldn't be anything different from you selecting WCDMA only via the regular mobile networks screen and that test page.
Where I live has really bad 3G reception for both Orange and TMobile so I have it set to GSM only when at home.

Most Androids have that key combination to bring up that menu. *#*#4636#*#* = *#*#TEST#*#*
I have exactly the same issue with my Xiaomi Mi-One. Always dropping signal when switching, really F***ing annoying. I can't get t-mob in my house, so it reverts to orange then I look at the phoen sometimes and signals gone, also happens randomly out my area. Sometimes have to restart phone, sometimes it fixes itself. So annoying. 2G in my house seems fine, but as soon as I leave and switch to 3g it loses signal, takes as an age to reconnect as well.
I know this is a thread for T-Mobile / Orange but I am having this issue on Three as well, wonder whether it effects all networks or just networks that use more than one carrier. Three has its own 3G network but it uses Orange 2G signal.
I am wondering whether it is the switch between these networks which is causing it to lose signal and not reconnect, just as you guys are experiencing on T-Mobile / Orange.
I have had several instances where my signal has an R next to it as if it is roaming, this would be when it is connected to Orange 2G network, I never had this problem on my Desire HD or Sensation.
Does anyone know of any issues on Vodafone or O2 regarding signal loss?

I had it at first too with my cut- simcard (with a special cutter). After that i thought that might have caused the problem, went to vodafone and they gave me a new real micro-simcard. After that I didn't have the problem anymore.
Might be a coincidence but maybe it helps

Thanks, I have already tried this with Three, still no better I'm afraid. Might try returning phone for a replacement and see if that helps. Not holding out much hope tho.
Simpler option:
Settings
Mobile Network
Network Operators - and select your original network. It won't roam then onto any other network.

Unfortunately as I'm on Three, they class both 3G and 2G as their network even tho they use Orange network for the 2G side of it. The phone doesn't see any difference in carrier whether is 3G or 2G. So in this case your suggestion won't work.
Thanks for idea though.

Just read your other thread, apologies.
Its a strange one.
Ill keep an eye on mine, although those in my local Three shop insist that the roam to Orange has been switched off UK wide now…

If you dial *#*#4636#*#* on your phone and select phone info you can select GSM only which is 2G, as Three don't have a 2G signal this must be Orange?
Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk HD
*#*#4636#*#* is a nice trick and solves my problem, but as soon as i restart the phone it reverts back to WCDMA preferred? How can i make it to stay on GSM?
I don't think you can keep it on GSM only. Always switches back for me as well.
