[Q] I dun goofed... (brick) - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

So yeah. After all these years of rooting and flashing I finally made a grave mistake. Flashed the international PA rom instead of the sprint one thinking I was in the sprint forums. I cant turn my phone on. Red LED comes up when its plugged into charger with no battery. I've done lots of research and have pretty much come to the conclusion that I'm screwed. Any last words of hope? I've tried ODIN already but it wont detect my phone... I feel like such an idiot.

I would prefer just taking it to sprint if you have total equipment protection the replacement is free if you don't you pay $35 fee and you get a replacement phone the next day and don't have to wait 3-5 days for your phone to get fixed

Ya well, I felt stupid when I dropped my phone and broke the glass and had to pay $150 for a replacement from Assurion a few weeks back. A JTAG is less then half that price I believe.

My local Sprint told me that when I get their insurance I can do anything to my phone and return it. They said that includes bricks and water damage. Lol. But some locations may be different :/

Yes you are correct, you pay the deductible return the phone and get a refurbished phone.

It all really depends on who you deal with. My local also let's me bring in busted phones and other electronics and I get credits on my account. Now I don't have the TEP but if I did hard brick my phone than my next step would be Craigslist. People abusing the system does aggravate me BUT when Sprint managers say ANYTHING is covered than I guess its OK to take it in to them. My local also replaces with brand new units, no refurbs till you hit 3 exchanges (which no one should in their right mind). Sorry for the long post but that's my two cents. OP, try a JTAG and if that don't work than tell your local Sprint what happened, don't try to hide it, most of them will work with you. .

TEP covers anything, that's for sure, even if your phone gets stolen. But you should always have to pay the deductible ($150 for our phones) in order to get a new (read: refurbished) phone. I don't know why your Sprint store is saying (and doing) otherwise, but I know that the TEP is through Asurion (I've dealt with them before on my old EVO) and the deductible sucks, but it's there for a reason. I'd wager a guess and say that someone at your local Sprint store is doing something shady with those bricked phones. Probably claiming 15-day returns. Don't know exactly why they'd do that, but there it is...
What others have recommended in the past (even within the last two days), is straight-up fraud: going to Samsung directly and claiming ignorance "my phone wouldn't turn on this morning." Myself (and others) have called this for what it is: defrauding Samsung.
You were told by your Sprint Store that this is ok, so I don't have any qualms with you over that, but I know that the course of action you've described is not sanctioned by Sprint Corporate or by Asurion or Samsung.
Just wanted to give you a reason so many people are crying out "Fraud!"

Its not fraud I've actually asked sprint representatives and they told me as long as we were honest up front it won't matter if its bricked due to rooting as long as we pay the fee to replace it should be ok. Fraud comes in when you lie to them and get a free replacement phone out of them and a deductible that big is for physical damage like a broken screen or something not for a bricked phone.

Oh no please no more discussions on the ideology of what's right and what's wrong. Personally I go with JTAG, repair my brand new device. Not get a refurbished one that you really have no idea what happened to it.

All I was doing was rellaying one message (from Sprint) to you guys. I've never filed a claim and probably never will. Hard bricks are almost always user error based soley on not reading or paying attention. I feel that with user error you should bite the bullet and figure another way vs taking it in to Sprint. I don't have a cooperate store near me, they're all Absolute Wireless so that could have something to do with it. But again, I DO NOT condone fraud nor do I condone the TEP exchange for hard bricks. I especially don't condone filing a warranty exchange by calling Samsung. Again, just telling you what they told me.

Anybody else here STILL think its a ripoff paying a little more outright at BEST BUY for a brand new phone with their $10/mo protection plans with no questions asked, NO deductible, Unlimited replacements (within 2 week periods)???
Sprint can stick it.
Best buy protection is the best service I have ever had. Always got a replacement, for water damage, smashed screen, stolen, bricked, they even offer loaner phones until your replacement comes in.
This is the reason I never have an intrusive screen protector on, or sport a bulky ugly case that can never slide out of your pocket just right.
It doesn't cover stolen or lost but I have to agree it is one of the better ones, I have it myself. I paid for it for 2 years up front

I have worked for a Sprint Retailer for over a year now and still this the TEP is a bit off.
If your prone to normal wear and tear and cracked screens Best Buy's is much better. If your prone to losing it constantly, (no more than 3 times in 12 months however) then TEP works.
It's just another way to make a few bucks. What's horrible is without the TEP insurance, if a speaker blows or something your looking at $35 for repair
My only question is...will this count as a material change in T&C for our phone? I'm looking for an easy upgrade and have been waiting for Sprint to change the contract (they always do).

Hmmm.. Would be a easy way to upgrade to the gs3

It won't count as the T&C hole applies to your wireless contract.
TEP is an add on so doesn't apply towards that.
(Already checked)
No questions asked doesn't exist at best buy. I bought a transformer prime from them. The prime has had a number of confirmed quality control issues and I had to exchange it twice until I got one that works. After the second exchange, they told me I wouldn't be able to return or exchange anything from them for 90 days, even if defective. I told them to keep the prime, got my money back, and haven't stepped foot in their stores since. I used to spend thousands of dollars a year there. No wonder they are going out of business.

Not true. They don't charge for warranty. If you want expedited warranty service, you have to pay the $35, otherwise it takes 1-2 weeks to get replaced. If you play your cards right, you can get the $35 fee waived.

False? Since when! Retail stores don't give you options to get a free replacement in 1-2 weeks. It's just $35, even if device is on backorder.

Not false, sprint does not charge for warranty replacements. It would be illegal to do so. They provide a service for $35. If you object to the $35, they handle the warranty through the manufacturer which takes more time. However, if you threaten to cancel, they almost always waive the fee. This is probably just a case of you being an uninformed lower level employee.

Fuuuck. That. ****.
200 dollar deductible because I have a really nice phone?! Gtfo
I have always preferred best buy myself too. It seems that they are always willing to do what is right for the customer and I have never had any issues...
I read somewhere that someone had a bad experience. Don't let that experience ruin it for you... Could have been an employee with a hair up their ass that day and was taking it out on you... ALWAYS confirm things with another employee, customer, or even go to another store. I won't hesitate to drive to any of the three around here to confirm something or to grab something that wasn't in stock at the other store.... Worked for me so far! Otherwise, there's always the sprint store

I switched to best buy when I got my gsII.. I haven't had to use it but they just seemed way more pleasant to deal with than my local sprint store, and obviously like everyone else said the sprint plan is better if you're prone to losing/getting your phone stolen. Personally as long as best buy isn't going out of business and time soon I will buy my phone from and use best buy insurance. Just a personal preference.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using XDA
Save your money. Equipment protection is a rip off. The phones have a one year warranty. Keep an old phone that you can port to for a couple of weeks while you send it out to the mfg if you can't afford the $35 for repair service. But if you pay 15/mo for 2 years + $100.00 deductible, you end up paying $460.00. Sounds like a huge waste of money to me when you can buy a new phone outright that is an older model for like $200.
Best buy protection used to be even better. I used it to pull off 2 upgrades with no cost to me. They have since changed it.
Before i took my evo in with a spider web for a screen. They sent it off, and a month later they said they were just going to give me a new phone. I got a gift card for $649 and they let me change phones.
Now, they only do rapid exchange with a referb. I had bby btp on everyone until this phone, because i got it in Amazon on black Friday for $.01.
And best buy does NOT cover lost or stolen, only sprint does.

Just got my Galaxy S3 today. Received a dud unfortunately :( Couple problems inside.

Well today I got my Galaxy S3 at Walmart. It was cheaper than sprint, and I only payed 148 before taxes. Unfortunately it has a problem with the camera. The main camera has a huge sensor issue line going through all the pictures, mainly apparent in lower light. It does it with all camera apps. Phone is fresh out the box. I went back to walmart and unfortunately they did not have another S3 in stock. I have 14 days to swap it out and got a case started. The lady told me she has to wait until tomorrow to speak to the manager since she does not have authority to order a new one, but she assured me I will get a new one. I hope this goes without problems. Downside of getting it at walmart...
Here are some pictures of the screens:

You can see the line in all of these. Something is wrong with the image sensor. I really hope my replacement phone will not have any bugs like this.

Is it just showing hers wrong, or does her phone really have more memory, even though they are the same model pretty much. 16GB

Relax dude, Like said, that is my opinion..lol
I sensed no attitude or disrespect in his post that warranted him to "relax". Whatever. Anyways my advice to OP is to have the Wal Mart store manager find you another new phone at a nearby store OR Athey can have one shipped to your house. For the duration of your return policy you will need to deal with Wal Mart. After that time elapses and you still have not got your phone swapped out, you can go to any corporate Sprint store for repair/exchange as long as you have TEP (total equipment protection) on your line of service. If yoy don't, your next best option is to contact Samsung as was already suggested. I'm confident Wal Mart will make it right. Good luck.
Why can't you go to a different Walmart that has it in stock and Swap it there?
The agreement with walmart states that you must return it to the same store you received it from. I don't have TEP, but I called walmart to check yesterday and they have ordered 3 new phones for the shelves and they are saving one for me so I can get it swapped out. So far everything has been working very smooth with them.
Dang, you have a bar in your house?!!! :victory:
I'm glad I'm not the only one who got a defective GS3 >_<, I'm onto my second one actually.
My first GS3 I had to have exchanged as the charging port was bad on it, the second one (the one I'm on now,) the headphone jack went awry and I had to replace it.
I actually work for Sprint at a Service Center, so luckily if anything goes wrong on mine I can repair it.
Also on the plus side, the GS3 is EXTREMELY easy to work on! Most parts are interchangeable (except charging ports of course,) and besides the tons of screws on the back it's pretty easy to open up once the screws are out.
I do have to say having insurance on your phone is the smartest thing you can do, because without it outside of the 14 day return policy if you have a manufacturer's defect or something wrong you have to send it to Samsung or pay $35 at a repair center to get it replaced or fixed.
If you guys have any questions feel free to ask!

Definitely worth having insurance. I didn't even know, but even (with insurance) outside of the 14 days sprint will either fix or replace the device in store right there with a unit in stock. That's pretty cool.

But at $11/month, it would only take a little more than 3 months to get that back with no insurance, right? I went to the Sprint store once in the almost 2 years I had my Epic 4G, but paid $7-8 each month for it, which comes out to a lot more than $35.

Given a defective phone. Sprint will not fix problem.

So let me start out by saying this. When i purchased my phone in the top right corner their appeared to have been a air pocket in the glass. It even had a small bump feel when running your finger over it. Well took the phone back to best buy the next day and they wouldn't replace it. Took it to sprinr for the 14 day return, but they wanted me to pay a restocking fee and would not allow me to swap for another galaxy s3 best they offered was a evo lte. So i just decided i would have to keep this phone.
I put a otterbox defender on it, which thankfully covered this little screen imperfection so it wasnt seen. Well i have now had the phone for about 3 months and today i dropped it from the couch(about 18") to the floor that is carpeted. It hit on the corner which is well covered by the otterbox, yet when i picked it up.. the screen has a few big cracks in it running from that little air bubble that is still easy to tell has been there forever.
I took the phone to sprint and they want me to pay the 150 for insurance.. Despite their being record of me complaining about this air bubble the day AFTER i purchased the phone. They refuse to fix it, or replace my defective product. I have called sprint to no avail.
I have proof that it has been like this since i got it. I have pictures and the phone still is proof it was defective, yet sprint refuses to fix the issue.
What are my options? I feel paying the 150 for insurance is bs. There is no way anything but this defective screen would have broken from 18" onto carpet in one of the best phone cases you can get.

I would try calling customer service rather than in store, and whenever you hear the words "I'm afraid I can't do anything for you" reply with "Let me speak to you supervisor." It may not work, but the keep making noise, the squeeky wheel gets the grease.
I think you're screwed. Sucks.

They should have swapped it on the spot the first time, no fee involved. The only time you have to pay a restocking fee is if you return the device or you swap it for a different one. If you're doing a defective swap, no fee.
Also, it's covered under the ESRP (service plan) portion of TEP, not the ERP (insurance) portion, which means no charge to you. Take it to a repair center and they will exchange it for you.

If you purchased the phone at Best Buy, corporate is under no obligation to swap the device for you. It is Best Buy's responsibility to carry out their return policy. As for trying to get Sprint to replace your device due to defective glass, you're barking up the wrong tree. Samsung manufactured your device, not Sprint. Take up your issue with them. Your Total Equipment Protection on the device is very straight forward in its terms. Mechanical/electrical failure = $0 advanced exchange. Physical damage/liquid damage (one or more cracks exceeding 1" total) = referred to Asurion for accidental damage claim requiring applicable deductible ($150 in your case).

No correct policy would have been to replace it the day after I purchased it and took it to them for a phone swap to a non defective gs3. However they seem to have just told me whatevercto get me out the door. Also corporate is responsible with some research. Me buying from best buy is the same as buying from any sprint store since a lot of them are 3rd party themselves which is exactly what best buy falls under.
Direct words from sprint last night. That where I purchased it does not mattef as long as it was a authorized sprint retailer.
I should be hearing back this evening from the supervisor of a supervisors supervisor supevisor. I think everyone at sprint is someones supervisor.
I will update this thread as things unwind.

Sprint cant and will not fix any phone with physical or water damage. If it was broken it should have been replaced or returned within 14 days otherwise you agreed to keep the device despite the condition it was given in. Sorry for your luck. An over/short/damage order should have been done for you from the beginning. Being that it came from Best Buy you would of been directed to them within 14 days as Sprint is not responsible for their inventory within the trial period.

Unfortunately, you cannot tell those of us who have been enforcing Sprint policies at both corporate and third party for years what is or is not correct. I've explained Sprint's policies as they are verbatim written, and the only way a supervisor is going to get around these policies will be with managerial exceptions. That does not make their decision policy nor them telling you otherwise correct. Best Buy should have honored their buyer's remorse period to exchange your defective equipment, but as the device did NOT exit Sprint's corporate location or warehouse inventory, they do NOT have to exchange it for you. Should they have exchanged it, that manager would show up on a violation report and would have been penalized accordingly.
To the guy who said that your phone is covered under ESRP, that is also not the case. Physical damage is physical damage. ESRP does not cover anything totaling over 1 crack of 1" in length, which your device clearly exceeds.

I think what makes me laugh the most about this situation is when you call sprint ask them what you should you do. Well they explain to you go to you nearest sprint repair store so they can look at the hand set. So you do and you have a sprint "tech" who knows absolute crap about phones and there way of taking care of you is, "sorry call asurion." They'll fix it for you. I'm sorry sprints store and some of over the phone cs is a joke. And those who defend it have no idea what customer service is. I don't care if samsung made it or not . Why is it other companies who don't make device they sell have no problem to take care of the problem for there customer base. Verizon prime example all I do is call cs and explain the problem and have another device sent to me. I

I've never had a bad experience with Sprint cs or any in store fixes. 45 min and I either have a fixed working phone or a replacement on the way.
But that's only for software issues not physical damage.
Pretty clear if it can't be fixed in store they have to turn it over to insurance claim.
Honestly sounds like your just butt hurt because Sprint is standing their ground on their policies and procedures.
If it was a issue when you bought the phone you should of returned it within the 14 days.

For the insurance protection we have thru sprint.. what do they cover if they wont fix a broken screen anymore.. and when did they stop because have taken in the touch pro 1, the TP2, and the EPIC 4G multiple times. And they all were rooted.. Some even with water damage.. from things like screen wont come on.. keyboard not working and even a cracked screen.. and they fix it wit no problem and dont charge me anything. Luckily I havent had to take my gs3 in yet.. but my girl has the galaxy nexus and they wont fix a little crack on the screen.. so my question is what do they fix and should I keep the full insurance or just pay for assurion since more then likely thats where they gonna send me any way

The simple answer is NO .... The Blue HTC One is a Best Buy exclusive , and from my understanding Asurion cant get it unless they are replacing a Blue HTC One on their insurance . Easier way is to upgrade through Best Buy and get Best Buys insurance .

Great question!
We try to replace your device with the same device. However, we cannot guarantee color. It is based on availability at the time you file your claim. If your original color is available at the time you file your claim, the original color will be sent. If your original color is not available at the time you are filing your claim, your options will be discussed with you at that time. You can find more information about the coverage we provide by visiting www.phoneclaim.com/verizon. Please let us know if we can be of further assistance.

I beg to differ , I have Best Buy insurance and I can take my phone with a broken screen to any Best Buy and exchange it right there with NO deductable for a Brand New Phone where on asurion I would have to send it in , pay a deductable and get a refurbished phone and thats if they will fix or replace it , I pay $9.99 and you pay $7.99 . But I guess to each his own . Dont get me wrong if asurion was my only option I would have it but honestly the $2.00 is worth it .

The rep is correct.
Geeksquad protection does not cover theft or loss.
Here is the exact wording from their policy:
Exclusions to Coverage.
This Plan does not cover:
Products that have been lost or stolen (this Plan only covers products that are returned to us in their
entirety); cosmetic damage to your product including but not limited to scratches, dents and broken plastic
on parts, that does not otherwise affect its functionality or materially impair your use.

There are more exclusions then the one I posted here, but that is the relevant part regarding theft or loss.

As much as bestbuy sounds nice the theft/lost is a winner here on Asurions side and 2$ cheaper / mo.

One thing I don't like about asurion is youvonly get two claims in a year. After that they cancel your insurance. I ghinkcits not right as I have to pay 99 bucks for a refurbished phone that I hope has been fixed right. I have had asurion for years and had to do a claim because I cracked my bolt screen. Got my replacement and about a few months later it fell and cracked again. If I would of replaced it again I would of lost coverage. All insurances has its ups and downs. I heard squaretrade is a good insurance for phones.

It could have been a mistake. Its probably a check box when you sign up. IMO, tell them to take it off and ensure you aren't charged for it on your bill. If you have payed for it at any point, get a credit. These are high school grads here usually with their first job that has actual responsibility. I don't keep my expectations too high.

It happens to me too. I just asked the sales rep what does the jump thing means and what does it do, alas! Already added on my account, but when I went back to the store to replace the phone I told them about the jump added on my account and I do t want it they took it off my account right away no questions asked. Jump is not mandatory ots just added benefits if there is to those people whose buying their phone on monthly basis payment. Hope this helps.

Its no Mistake, T-mobile reps get Commission pay for signing people up for Jump, I went through this same, I specifically told the Girl, i DO NOT want the Jump, then she made a comment " well its required with the note 3 when buying " so i told, thats BS (in a funny manner ) and told, i know how this works, i worked for a phone company then she laughed. If the rep get u signed up for Jump its an additional bonus they recives when they get the commission check. So if you do not want the Jump, REFUSE it, they even demand it, its required for Note 3. dont fall for that BS.
hope this helps
FYI, i did signed up for the Jump after 10 days, because i later found out that, note 3 have lot of faulty issues, including freezes, crashes and touch issues, since spending $700 bucks and being a phone fanatic who changes phone every 3 month, this move seems like a good idea,
PSA and Fyi, if you have insurance on the device without jump, it's $11.99/mo
If you have jump, which includes insurance, it's $10/mo
I almost never opt for insurance on anything, but I think it's usually a good deal (temporarily, at least) to have it on a $700 phone.
The reps make very little on jump incentives. It's more about quotas and there's ridiculous pressure to be above 80ish percent (e.g. they can be written up for having a low %)
That's not our problem though. However, I'd recommend getting it, and cancel if you don't want it a asap. Keep in mind, phone payments don't start for 2 months.
Either way, the main acct holder will always receive a text if it's added, so keep an eye on that if a rep is shady.

This. Jump is a great deal IMO, insurance for $1.99 LESS per month even if you don't want to use the upgrade option.
Either way OP, if you don't want it just call and have them take it off or go online & remove it yourself. Don't "demand" anything, you're not suffering any ill effects because you accidentally got signed up for Jump. Don't be that guy who storms into the store demanding recompense for a simple mistake.

These kind of comments should be kept to your self. Most of the people that work for T-Mobile are not just high school grads. I have a 4 year college degree in Law Enforcement and am unable to find a job right now. I also work as a T-Mo RSA in a Corp store. Yes it is a check box and also you have to get 90% of all customer you help to get jump or you get fired after 3 months. So keep your crap ass comments to your self. No one wants to hear it here.

Just get it off. If you're really that butt hurt complain to the manager. The manager might be shady and tell their employees to do it.

Yup the I work in a T-Mo Corp Store as a RSA. Because of how much my manger is pushed to get jump on accounts. We have to get 90% of all the customers that buy phones to get jump or we lose our jobs after 3 months if we are under 90%. Some mangers will tell reps to put it on for a month and the manger will credit it after month is over. The system still sees it has a add and the rep is safe. This is how bad T-Mobile is now when it comes to stuff.
I also work for T-Mo and he's right, our goal is 90% of any phones sold, but only for customers doing an EIP (payment plan). JUMP is $10/month and along with insurance bundled in (lost, stolen, physical, liquid damage) it also allows you to trade in the phone after six months, wiping away anything you still own on it, and making a new down payment on a different phone. You can do that twice per year after the first six months. If you plan on keeping your phone and paying it off, standard insurance without the JUMP will cost you $8/month. Just FYI Shady sales people are in many industries, so please don't assume every cell phone sales person is out to get you. If you leave the store not understanding everything you have signed, you don't have anyone to blame but yourself. At my store you have to sign a form that says you are enrolling in JUMP, not sure if every store has those though. That being said I do highly recommend insurance for this $800 phone. If something happens to it, $175 deductible is way better/cheaper than repairing costs or re-buying the device.

So I just checked my account and found out I am signed up for jump protection. When I bought my note 3 she asked me if I wanted to sign up and I specifically said no. I bought my phone outright full price. If I hadn't checked today I would have been paying for it. I'm going to call the store later today or tomorrow. What should I say and demand

You should go to the store and complain to the manager. When I bought my Samsung Galaxy S4 phone at full price, I specifically told the sales rep "I don't want insurance". The next day I get a text saying that my contract changes have been made. When I checked my account, it showed insurance. This pissed me off that they try to slip in insurance or other option just to get commission out of you. Next time before I leave the store, I will have them write out with a pen on the receipt "no insurance or other paid options or changes to the contract" and then have them sign their name and date it.
Could someone tell me where it would state "Jump" on the bill? I've been looking my bill over and I can't seem to find my insurance coverage or jump.

The 6 months starts from when you add jump. After that 6 months you can do it twice a year with no wait beyond that initial 6 months as long as you don't remove jump
