[Q] "new" advice on rom/kernel - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I just got this a few days ago from the s3. I am familiar with rooting; am installing the toolkit as i type now. I have used cm on my original nexus. But its obviously been awhile. The only real reason i desire to root is for tethering. "The assistant mgr at sprint told me a few things, thats why he would root but your risking battery life, said a few other things but i wasn't paying attention". He also said they can tell w/in 3min if you have ever rooted it and warr is voided. I however have insurance from b buy i think theirs is better. I was under the impression if you do the flash reset with that triangle app it looks as if you never flashed it.
Now with the rom and possibly kernel. I am very happy with the stock rom; so what is the closest thing to it out there at the moment that is maybe better or faster?

Lab rats, sts, digiblurs rom are 3 of the usual mentioned in these type of threads.
Lab rats has a few changes from stock to make it different, but they are all easily set back to stock in the updater.
Just look around at the OPs of various roms and pick what sounds like what you want.

When I got my phone from best buy and they asked about black tie I said hell yes and told the guy I like to play with my phones outside the box he said it would be the perfect plan for me.. Lol.. He also mentioned he had the same protection on his ifail and had recently jailbroken it... Screw Sprint's warranty and their insurance plan.. I have yet to lose a phone (knock on wood) and theft and loss seems to be the only thing not covered.. Hell, on my paperwork it even says no deductible, which I'm sure would change eventually as that's a lot of money, but in my opinion root away and have fun!!! Oh, and don't believe anything sprint tells u like that, they don't know jack!! I called them to switch my evo lte to my oldest boy and in the process they told me I had remove the (nonremovable) battery to reset it... Lmmfao!!

[Q] So, um...when you flash a new rom are you still on Sprint?

Seems like a dumb question I know, but I couldn't find anywhere to confirm that. I mean, I figure after rooting, all is still good. But if I flash a new rom, say CM7 or something, is that still the case? Or do I have to do something special to get back on, etc?
huh? Flashing a rom has nothing to do with the carrier.

Yes. You are still on Sprint.

I would recommend you DON'T flash a ROM. If you flash a new ROM, your phone will randomly get signals from verizon and at&t, and then your phone transforms into an iphone. Its a nasty site. Just stick with your current setup.

You know, as I read through different threads that talk about manual activation or changing carriers, it is NOT apparent that my carrier information and activation remain intact if I flash a new rom. As a matter of fact, if you step back for a second, it would almost seem a bit counter intuitive that such a large change to the phone would not affect that, especially given some of the other conversation here.
All my experience in rooting is with the nook, which doesn't have this aspect to consider so I figured I'd ask and confirm before screwing with the phone. So thanks for answering.
What you might have read is about either people force roaming on Verizon or people who have their phone already flashed to an alternate carrier. It is a very difficult process to take an inactive phone and flash to another carrier. Those settings are not touched by ROMs neither is the modem (baseband) of your phone. You must have misread and misunderstood many things.

Don't mind the signal. I usually use roam control to force roam when I'm at work but did this for demo purporses.

Thanks for those who answered. I had read just enough to want to be sure before I did anything, but suspected that it would be firm.
Thanks for confirming.

Apparent Hard Brick - Any Hope?

Hey all, Search is not working for me, and I am in need of some help. Been using this Epic Touch for 2 years, but running custom ROMS for over a year.
I installed CM 10.1 official on my phone in September, and have had no issues since... Until this week.
I had had occasional reboots, but had one today, where the reboot then froze on the Samsung GSII logo. From what I know now (after googling), this is a soft brick. Not sure if i did something wrong by doing this, but just thinking it was a random reboot and brief issue, I rebooted again by holding power key...
This time, only the Blue LED comes on (steady), and the screen is completely black.
Again, I wasn't doing ANYTHING at the time this happened. Was not installing a ROM, was just charging phone when it went into the random reboot.
Is there anything I can do? I have insurance, but just ordered a LG G2 upgrade, so am only weeks away from a new phone. Don't want to pay the deductible for a phone i'll only have 2 weeks.
Thanks so much, guys.
Hmm, on the TEP site to even process a claim, only options are Water Damage, Physical Damage, Lost, Stolen.
So I guess I may have another option due to software failure? I'll head into a Sprint store and see what I can do.
So you have tried pulling the battery and going into recovery or download mode and flashing a new ROM?

Couldn't get to recovery. Just black screen. Seemed to be a complete brick, probably emmc.
I took it to a sprint store and they replaced it, free of charge, saying the board was completely gone.

Unfortunately they do happen. Nothing can be done about it with this phone, they're already out of production.

Yeah, they actually had an E4GT in the store to give me, so i barely waited 30 minutes.
I'm just gonna leave it stock for now, until I get my G2.
Just very weird that I hadn't flashed anything in weeks (almost 2 months), and it crapped out.

Exchanging at Best Buy due to stuck pixels

I noticed stuck pixels (whenever I'm on a black screen i see two colors red and blue) on my NX 7 only hours after purchasing it, which was the 21'st of December. Due to Best Buy being crowded during this time of the year i tried to ignore it, and I hoped it went away. I tried the apps that were supposed to fix stuck pixels, but they didn't make anything better. On Thursday or Friday I'm exchanging it, for another. I've unlocked and rooted it, but I'm going to flash it back to stock. Do you think they will give me a replacement, if not what should i say because i really don't want to deal with the stuck pixels?
Should I just keep because i may get one that's worse?
What should i expect?
Thanks for viewing.

Best Buy didn't give me any grief when I had the same. I wiped and flashed the stock ROM and recovery, and on the initial setup screen, the rep could clearly see the dead black pixel.
You should have no qualms about exchanging for another. If the next one also has any bad pixels, exchange it too. You're not paying the most money in the world, but enough that you should get a properly working device.

Yup, they said it was defective and they gave me another. Thanks.
The replacement has light bleed, YAY.
Best buy will eventually black ball you for returns as they did with me. Return it and get your money then buy it somewhere else.

I had the same problem, and actually made them open 3 new units in store before I found a perfect one. The manager was getting a little annoyed with me, but I'm not going to accept anything less than perfect. In the end I got what I wanted.

[Q] Knox'd up

Saferoot worked very well for me without a hitch. These knox issues are a pain in the [email protected]#. I wish I could get a clear answer that I will void my warranty on a sealed brand new S4 I bought off Swappa from a TMobile Employee who won it in a contest (I SCORED ON THE PRICE - $300 and this leads me to believe I might be able to get a warranty somewhere because it arrived perfectly sealed) had to brag. I've never turned a phone in for warranty before but there is so much Knox BS and *****ing out there it is hard for a noob to decipher if you can safely load a mod by Saferoot - no Knox issue there - Clockworkmod - there goes Knox - then flash your favorite mod to the SD and boot to it. What versions are safe and since I'm begging where is the best Google Mod. IF I LOOK AT THOSE STUPID BALLOONS ANOTHER DAY I'LL POP THEM. IF all I am going to do is trip a flag then up theirs I don't care I've never sent a phone in for repair EVER I take care of them. I read about Safestrap but that appears to be VZW and ATT only. We apparently have a different bootloader but is that bootloader Knox sensitive? I can't figure it out as much as I dig and I'm half way to china. If there is a mod for dummies thread out there that accounts for those of us stupid enough to take the 43 OTA and get Knox'd up...haha I'd contribute gladly to the expert who helped me. Normally I'd just go for it knowing hardbrick is difficult and digging can get rid of a softbrick but knox has me afraid after all the forum banter. Somebody point me to that mod for dummies thread and assure me that even if I trip my knox which it would be nice not to do I will be safe. Also confirm that there will be no workaround like safestrap for us TMO's anytime soon and I'll nuke this puppy as soon as I can reach my USB cord...You will be my new SENSAE
Wow.

The same methods work from before for rooting/flashing as before.
Here are instructions: http://www.w0lfdroid.com/2013/12/Ho...-and-Root-Samsung-Galaxy-S3-S4-Note2.html?m=1 Once you trip Knox the only bad thing that happens is it says se android not enforcing (or something like that every time you reboot).

Update from Verizon

I got this message to update my phone. I am gonna call verizon and tell them to stop sending me stupid messages like this.
Anyone else get this text from verizon?
I have updates blocked on my S8+

I am still running Build AQGL and reading all the negative posts on here about the last few updates. I think I will just stay on this build. Still gonna call the big V and be put on the do not ever bother list.
It's funny they try to scare you into updating your phone. I have never ever had an issue with calling out.
well good luck not being able to make calls to certain devices. I can't understand why you wouldn't want to be informed of OS issues like this. suit yourself.

Funny I don't have issues... If I did I would just go back to using my rooted Moto X Pure anyway or the Note 4. I always have a few phones to use on standby.
Plus there are alot of negitive posts about the updates and people wanting to flash back so why take the update. I don't see a reason.
Don't try to fix what's not broke. So far my S8+ is doing well other than we can't unlock the bootloader and root.
I will move on to another device before long that is. :good:
:silly:
Another reason not to update... You do these updates and all Verizon does is put more crap apps on your phone... I would never buy a branded verizon phone again. unlocked is the only way to go.
Then you don't get to ***** when the tides are turned and the unlocked versions are the last ones to get any kind of update on them. Cause lately that's what I've been seeing...the unlocked versions may not have any "carrier bloat" but they are SO FAR behind in updates (Security or OS updates)

Don't really care about updates... If the phone works I leave it alone!!
If I was worried about it I would go back to rooting and do the custom ROM thing again.
