It seems obvious that a Verizon user can't flash a Sprint ROM (Although I admit I don't know exactly why unless S3 ROMS have PRL, PRI, NV, etc in them, too) but can a Sprint user flash a kernel for the S3 that he found on, say, a forum for Verizon S3 users?
Also, as long as I'm asking, CWM was not a good Recovery for the Evo and TBH, I don't really like it now. How much better is TWRP?? Does it handle back-ups and restores better?? I have to think it does since CWM just makes a single image without being able to select what components you actually want to back up

I wouldn't flash anything unless it's for Sprint, some have reported they do work but rotations are upside down..
The Evo most certainly had cwm for a recovery as its the recovery my wife used on her Evo, you might be talking about the Evo lte but I'm 85% sure they have cwm also since its the most popular recovery out there.. the newer versions of twrp have been giving some people problems with backups and restores lately so if you go with twrp go with an older version... 2.3.3.0 is rock solid...

I would advice against it. I haven't tried it myself, but I have read about a few people that have flashed Kernels not for their Carriers. It did not turn out well. I do not know if that's the rule, or the exception. Just know that I would not do it. As for CWM on the SGS3. I have yet to have any issues with it. It is a far cry from the OG EVO days. Much improved IMO.
Kernel's are individual for each carrier. The components and file locations are all different. You will end up with a brick in most cases. This is for the GSIII we are speaking of. Other devices such as the Galaxy Nexus shares kernel across all carriers.

OK, thanks, guys.
@flastnoles11 of course the Evo had CWM. But that was the worst recovery for the Evo, since it didn't wipe properly and the Evoi is a very temperamental device when it comes to proper wipes before flashing a ROM.
On a side-note, I really HATE when people say something like you did when you wrote "The Evo most certainly had cwm for a recovery as its the recovery my wife used on her Evo, you might be talking about the Evo lte but I'm 85% sure they have cwm also since its the most popular recovery out there".
I stated that I just came form the Evo. My Signature includes a comprehensive guide I wrote for the Evo. I have almost 1500 thank yous listed because of my work on the Evo. My signature includes the signature bar for my dev team, including an icon for the Evo. I''m a (Currently suspened (( ) RC because of the Evo work I did. There's a pretty good chance that I know what I'm talking about and wasn't making a mistake.
Sorry for the rant. It's just one of my pet peeves. No disrespect intended. Just unfortunately using you as a scapegoat here
I just came from the evo 4g LTE.. There's a cwm recovery for it but it dont work at all.. It messes with misc partition.. So the only recovery thats works for the evo LTE is twrp.. I had the evo 4g.. Then the evo 3d.. Then evo 4g lte.. Now jumped ship to samsung!!

Ive been reading on xda ever since i had a hero and rooted it using some guides on here and decided i would finally post lol. Upgraded my evo to e4gt on 28th of sept and havent looked back.
I rooted it last night using crawrj deodexed with busybox and its been running great so props for that. I have only experienced LOS twice since i have had my phone but those were instances that i was actually out of signal and it came back once i was out of the deadzone. So overall i love the e4gt compared to my evo .
Anyone else come from the evo to the e4gt? Also after rooting this phone any sweet mods that are must have yet? Thanks

I, too, came from the EVO4G to the E4GT. If you're having LoS issues try the LoST Kernel and if you wanna try a custom ROM try out Calkulin's (new but my favorite), ViperROM or StarBurst.

I came from EVO4G (which I absolutely loved) to EVO3D (HATED except for the 3D) to E4GT and this phone by far is the best one of all three.
I loved my evo 4g as well, my fiancee is using it now as i added a second line and moved my number to the new phone (e4gt) and gave her the evo . I do have a question, i odined this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415
and i am trying to make sure this did not change my kernel. I was completely stock before this so by what i read in his thread i should still have the kernel the phone came with correct?
My next question is can i odin this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099
which would be the same kernel i have at the moment but with root and cwm because i am currently rooted now correct?

The first one contains no kernel, so it's definitly stock, just rooted.
second is stock also.
Okay so the second one would keep root but add cwm. Thanks
okay so now i am rooted with cwm5 and stock pulled kernel with no yellow triangle on splash screen, thanks for the help guys
I started out with the HTC Hero as well, i upgraded to the HTC Evo and i loved it but i wanted the Evo Shift so not too much of a change there. But i got this phone about october 25 and i never looked back once, what an amazing phone this is, sure it feel like plastic but thats because they wanted a light weight phone.
I just rooted for the first time two nights ago and been having issues with media because of a file ".nomedia" that file tends to stop the SD scan so it skips over pictures, music and other things but since i removed it i can play music and see my pictures again except a few that the file locked them some how. but Since Calkulin came in the picture to E4GT that made the E4GT a much better phone :-D
Lol ya, i was kind of scared to root at first because of all the LOS reports after rooting but once they came out with the stock pulled with cwm its all good now really no reason not to root and boy do i love odin, makes life easy compared to when i first rooted the hero and evo by using command prompt and adb lol..... This phone is great, no actual LOS issues for me but i hope samsung/sprint release an update so everyone can enjoy the phone for what a beast it is.

lol i agree, i was thinking this odin stuff was going to be confusing, since i knew HTC phone used HTC sync for phone drivers. but when i found out needed samsung kies on the PC to get the drivers and started up odin it was a breeze, never thought rooting could be so easy. Since rooting the HTC Evo Shift from 2.3.3 was a PAIN where had to downgrade the Hboot.
I had one incident where i lost signal but that was the kernal i tested for a sec, i ended up going back to LoStKernelExp+ which is the bomb and glad Clakulin decided to use it.
I just came to the E4GT from the OG Evo myself, it's amazing. CM7 was nice but the blazing speed on this thing really is something to behold!
Guys OG Evo owner here myself... I still have both phone as I love them equally now. So I just flashed one of the OG Evos best developers roms... Caulkin is making roms for us guys so check it out here
The good ole days are back...lol
Going to get the E4GT today. Charging circuit went to hell on my EVO and it's way out of warranty. I can pay the $100 insurance deductible and get a refurbed EVO, or upgrade with $90 buyback on the EVO and get the E4GT for $110.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G with Tapatalk
For those of us OG Evo folks who moved to the E4GT, how do you root it without getting LOS?
I have never gotten LOS on my E4GT & that has been what has given me pause in rooting. i really miss TI backup & a few other pieces of software. Teather would be nice too (Granted the web browsing speeds are too damm slow to bother).
Anyone want to point me in an OG Evo friendly direction on what & how to do it all?
I am starting to feel like I might join the Verizon bandwagon with the NP. I am getting sick of the unusable data speeds.
Thanks,
Rich
check out my original post on this thread, it has both .tars that i used to odin onto my phone to get root+stock pulled kernel + CWM5 and you should be set. LOS is not really caused by root, its an underlying problem in the hardware/software from what ive read on the forum and some kernels can cause it to happen more often and others less often. I am using the stock pulled kernel which is the exact same that is on unrooted phones so if you get LOS with that you would have gotten it with no root as well.
It should be here Tuesday. Been doing some homework, however, some quick Q's for you pros.
I'm coming from an HTC Evo4G and Evo3D, so Odin is somewhat unfamiliar...
What is the "best" root method?
Is most everything on the Epic similar to that of the Fascinate? I've rooted and flashed MIUI on one of those...
Anything I need to avoid like the plague????
Thanks!!!!

Also, if you go into the development section and look around a bit, you'll be able to find useful things, as well as answers to questions you may have, quite quickly.
Hope it helps, and enjoy this awesome phone!

Touch recovery unless u like pretty bricks lol, i came from og evo and used oneclick odin and auto root to root my et4g only took about 10mins search the dev thread for them they were buried a little ways down when i rooted on friday and i had to read for a cpl hours to familiarize my self with all the new terms and the real differnces in the setup of this phone vs the evo but i previously owned a samsung intercept which was similar in setup so a refresher was all i really needed and familiarizing myself with the updated methods (odin vs swupdater) etc

No problem.
There are definitely great Developers on this phone.
My personal favorite ROM is by Rujelus22, he also just released a Beta Kernel with Touch Recovery.
Good Luck!
the "Touch Recovery" as long as you use one that is baked into a kernel is fine (ie rogue Hitman Kernel) Part of the issue at least with everything I've been reading is that when people use the "TEMP" touch (from say the clockwork app in market that allow a "temporary" touch recovery to be put in place) is when a lot of people have had issues. I use the Hitman repack and I've yet to experience any issues with it ever.
As for rooting the phone I do it the tried and true way always with Odin. I kept a Stock EG30 (what this phone came with at launch) Odin restore on my computer with sfhub's auto root. It takes a few longer to do a root process (I do believe that sf made a EG30 auto root that comes in Odin form Odin that and you have root with busybox and superuser)
Like I said I just go about it differently. That's how I root my friends phones and they don't mind the few extra minutes or so that it takes cause once it's done they have a phone always in 100% working order and ready to go.

there is a counter in the bootloader. After a non standard ROM is flashed, the counter is triggered and you get the "triangle of shame" that let's service people know you've flashed a ROM on your phone / voided your warranty. A USB jig can reset the triangle and the counter. you can get 'em on Amazon, Ebay, or you can make a jug for next to nothing...
Good luck and welcome to the fold! You're gonna love it!
P.S. I'm a firm proponent of the 4.0 Blazer ROM. Buttery smooth fast and great battery life... (FB15 modem)

Edit 2: i forgot to mention im at 46% battery left on stock 1800 battery as well with that usage rediculous compared to my evo that was 3500 battery times for me my 1800 in my evo would be dead at 8 hrs screen on

I'm gonna throw this out there and hopefully prevent some bad things, I am a lurker who reads a TON. I am gonna strongly caution you against using touch recovery. Far too many phones have been getting bricked lately. Also, don't pay too much attention to modems or odin at first, eventually you'll get curious and go for it, but it's not really necessary for most things. If you are gonna go for odin, I'd suggest buying the mobile odin app from the market. Very handy app.
But be warned, stay away from touch recovery for now. Wait for the kinks to be ironed out.

Talk about a let down, we were so close to having this thing on our E4GT but it seems to have never been fixed. Now there is TWRP 2.1 and still no dice. I've never been a fan of CWM and I'm getting jealous of all the cool touch recoveries my brother has on his evo 3d. Don't get me started on CWM Touch, lol.
Maybe if we got together and shown that we still want this it could happen? The whole idea of the recovery rewriting itself after every flash was pretty cool.
I had read on one of the developers twitter that twrp had broken up. I also heard they were going to release the code for it for others to use but don't quote me on that.also that developer said he was working on a completely new kind of recovery

Agrabren was the member of Team Win that Rootzwiki gave the E4GT to from our phone winning the poll. Then a month or so later Agrabren and Team Win parted ways, before TWRP was functional on our phone. Since then, Agrabren has been working on his own recovery project called Phoenix. So, who knows if our phone will ever see TWRP support, and who knows what if anything Agrabren ever did with his E4GT.

So, who knows if our phone will ever see TWRP support, and who knows what if anything Agrabren ever did with his E4GT.

I actually put the new TWRP 2.1 on my Nexus and had a problem flashing within the first 24 hours so I went back to the touch recovery which has been flawless on that phone. I would like to see the issues ironed out myself
TWRP 2.0 hard-bricked my original Evo 4G, as it did many other Evos. It will be a cold day in hell if I ever install anything from Team Win on my phones.
However, this whole idea of touch recoveries really baffles me. I am obviously not new to the touch recovery idea, and I agree that it's nicer, but the question is; what is the big deal? If you are a "flashaholic" (I hate that term), you may go into recovery a few times a week, and all you're doing is clearing caches and flashing a new ROM, mod, etc. So does the extra 60 seconds that it takes to fiddle with the volume and power buttons make that big of a difference? I am perfectly happy with a regular recovery that is known to work without problems. So what is this whole deal about "being jealous of all of the cool touch recoveries." I mean honestly, of all of the things to be jealous about, you guys occupy your minds with a touch recovery.

I only like it to save the wear and tear on my volume rocker but I don't flash ROMs on my Epic Touch near as much as on my Nexus so that really doesn't come into play. I actually went back to good old regular CWM5 when I flashed 4.0.4 on my NS4G and its just as good. When I tried to flash a ROM with TWRP 2.1 this morning it hung at the splash screen. I used Flash Image GUI to put touch recovery on since I had the img and the same ROM zip flashed with no problems

Im jealous because the geek in me says "wow, thats cool". But really the redeeming quality of TWRP2 to me was that you wouldn't have to worry about bundling the recovery with the kernel anymore. That is an annoyance with this phone that I flat out do not like.

That's an interesting point, and it was something that I didn't expect when I first came to the E4GT from the Evo. However, if the phone is designed to have the kernel bundled with the recovery, perhaps it's best not to mess with it. I do agree that it's annoying to have to have the bundle, but if it's true what you said about TWRP not being bundled with a kernel, this makes me even more weary of trying it out.

I am curious about this now too! I know that CWM backups don't show in TWRP. It has its own folder but I don't know if the kernel/recovery being bundled is phone specific or if TWRP is truly separate

Supposedly the way it worked was no matter what kernel or recovery you flashed, TWRP rewrote itself after every flash, thus giving you TWRP all the time. I think thats how I understood it.

Ok, that makes sense. But if that's what happens, then it's really no different than you flashing a new kernel/recovery package after each new ROM flash, it's just that this step is done for you automatically. I've been doing to ODIN leaks for a long time now so I don't remember how typical 3rd party ROMs are packaged, but does each ROM come with it's own kernel/recovery, or is it standalone? I know that with the Evo, you would flash a ROM and the kernel if you wanted to, but the recovery was untouched. Here, I think I typically flashed a ROM, and then kernel/recovery package right after, so the process is really no different from the Evo. I just kept the Rogue package on my SD card. And a second point, let's say that what you are saying is true, that TWRP rewrites itself after every flash, then how do you get rid of it if you want something else? I personally don't really like the idea of turning control of my device to some automated code.

I am hoping someone will be able to help me with this. I just got a Sprint Samsung Galaxy S II and I do not see it on XDS anywhere. Is the Samsung Epic 4G Touch the Sprint Galaxy S II? The only S II phone I see on XDA is the Samsung Galaxy S II 19122 and it does not look like my phone in the picture. Even in the countless videos I have watched its not my phone. In fact I do not even think that the 19122 is not a Sprint phone. The Samsung Epic 4G Touch looks like my phone and its for Sprint. Which should I be using? What should I do??
Yes, sprint just just ditched the old branding. Only flash and root and do other stuff that says Epic Touch 4G, ET4G, or sprint galaxy s II

Thanks for your reply!! I purchased a Samsung Galaxy S 2 from Sprint. I am not a pro when it comes to rooting phones but I come from a EVO that I had rooted and flashed many roms. However my Galaxy S 2 has me stumped! I rooted it and it has not worked the way it should. I cant get my GPS to work on any ROM I have flashed. I have been through the forums, Google and anything else I could think of. I Have tried every app or fix idea I could find and still nothing. I am now at the point where I would like to unroot my phone and start over. I feel as if maybe I have done something wrong. However I cant find a video or directions how to unroot my phone back to stock and then to root it again. I know my phone came with ICS and all the videos or directions I find are from 2.3. What should I do?
Look up QBking 77 in the forum and that will lead you to You tube, he has the scoop on the Epic touch now the Samsung Gal.S 2.
Watch his stuff and decide which way you want to go.
Sfhubs one click root is the simplest method, QBking covers it.

Stop flashing and do A LOT of reading before you hard brick. This phone is nothing like the evo, recovery changes with every kernel, rom manager does not work, there is a super brick bug that will completely kill this phone with no way to fix. You need to slow down and research before you do anything else.

You don't have to fear change...leave that to my dad! lol. Anyway, QBKing77 has been an amazing resource, lots of great YouTube stuff, start slow and careful and you won't brick it. Leave the EVO to collect dust.
Its not hard once you get an understanding of what's what. There are alot of variants of the gs2 and quite a few ppl have flashed stuff meant for other versions which will kill usb-pc connection. And there are safe and unsafe kernel/recoveries to use, unsafe kernel and a factory reset in recovery will trigger the brick bug and you get the blue light of death(dead phone) Read the stickies in the sub forums of this section, search info for epic 4g touch as that's what this phone is(was) called and what all the info is listed under in forums. Just slow down and take some time to inform yourself before you do something and want to kick your own ass for rushing. I'm not new to rooting and Modding, and I read for 3 days before I even thought about rooting when I came from my og evo. Patience is key when doing things to your phone that don't come out of the box. Think of it like a car, you wouldn't strap a supercharger on it and then go race down a strip without doing some research first, right? Once you get a little education on the device under your belt you'll be flashing like you were on the evo, its just a different process with a learning curve. That's the way it is when changing devices, all firmware, even tho android based, is slightly different with its own quirks you'll need to understand.

I just back tracked all my steps and found that I did follow QBKing77 directions for root and recovery using odem. I downloaded and flashed the roms from XDA. As of now I do not see that I did anything wrong. I will try to give this phone another try, if I cant unroot or get it to work then it will just be a paper weight. Thanks for your help and advice.

Thanks for the advice, I will do more reading and see what I can find. However at this point I am positive that I have followed all the correct steps. This is why this is driving me crazy. I just dont know what I will do if I cant get this phone to work. Thanks again.
Trust me, I know everyone is saying read, and read some more, but that's really all you have to do. Just go over to the General side, and read the first 3 pin-ups. That helped me a lot, and all the wonderful people on these forums, and also qbking77. I rooted my friends htc device, and I must say, rooting and flashing on this device is A LOT easier! Hope you don't brick, and good luck!
I don't understand why people are answering your question the way they have so far. From what I understand, all you wanted to know was what the deal was with this phone and is it a S2 or not.
Here's what you need to know.
This the Samsung Epic 4G Touch. It is the same specs as the other Samsung Galaxy SII, but it has it's own custom board and firmware because it's CDMA and Sprint. Why couldn't Sprint users just get a CDMA version of the regular Galaxy SII all of Europe uses? Because, it's from the U.S., and in the U.S. big companies try to make life as hard as possible for their customers while treating them like cattle. So in short, the Epic Touch is close to the same thing as a Galaxy S2, but it isn't compatible with normal S2 software or development.
The model name of the Epic Touch 4G is SPH-D710. As long as you refer to the phone as the SPH-D710 there should never be any confusion.
What do you want to do with your phone?
If you want to root it, you'll need to know what build you are running. Are you on EL26, FF18, or FH13?
If you want to flash it to a custom rom, which one? There are several good ones, most notably CM9 which reached Beta status earlier this month.
Do you want to install recovery?
well Epic touch is S2 for sprint and its called Samsung sprint epic 4g touch , better than the other s2s out there , bigger better screen and stuff
about rooting
i was in the same boat mate
u can say still am
came from VZN fascinate - the best brick proof phone i have ever used , lol flashed it with my eyes closed like 50 times a day ;P
anyways S2 is tricky : sincere suggestion
Reda a bit before touching
and never flash anything just for the heck of it , make sure if what you are going to do is in fact right ? ask around and dont give into the temptation of flashing just like that , again its a SINCERE SUGGESTION.
as far as basic rooting and flashing is concerned
first use the oneclick odin stock rooted ROMS, use them see what you really need if u are on GB or ICS
then look for the particular ROM with them features
will add more for you
ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww
So my old brain kicks in and says mod your evo
ok at this point
so i rooted mt evo 4g with HTCDEV and revolutionary some how i ended up installing revolutionary but the phone still works
but yes i did not do a backup of the original system on the phone!!
well i am now thinking since i am rooted and s-off abot a custom ROM??
ok this is were the old man comes in
i only wish do do this once and most of you all here it seems do this every day as a type of hobby
what i would like to find in a custom ROM is everthing to work as the phone works now but hopefully even better
and to get rid of all this BS poopwear sprint has loaded into this phone
a ROM that looks great and new and as stable as stock?? with maybe some new apps to play with
So the Question is? Is there a ROM out here filled with the above???
Question 2
when you root a phone and s-off then do a custom rom, does sprint know what you have done or can they find out
and if so can they mess with you or bug you??
no i do not see men in black everywere!
just have seen post about watermarks and sprint knows! just was hoping to get the truth here!
I will start with your second question. The only way Sprint will know is if you have to take it on for service. So no worries there.
As far as a ROM goes there are many solid, stable, fully working roms. You will be limited to the older gingerbread roms. All the newer ones lack drivers for front camera and Wimax (4g). Now to find what you want will take searching on your part. There are a few different versions of sense which is HTC's launcher and then you have AOSP which looks completely different. When I get on a computer I will give you some links to check out.

Since you have been using the EVO for a few years and are used the the Sense UI I would recommed
starting out with The Classic. A very solid ROM by tommytomatoe. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
So many out there, all great, most of devs remove all the crap when we buid the roms guess it comes down to what you like.
You like stock, or themes,

The first two you listed will work 100% but the last one is a jelly bean ROM that has no front camera or 4G. Plus other minor issues. The classic would be like your stock ROM only way better.

Sorry if i sound like a dumb ass
i have gone to alot of web sites trying to dig all the info in can from the words i can make sence from!
i am not here to beat no one up or down!! i had asked help from one site when i went to root my phone
and was kind of kick for being a noob and asking a question the guy thought everyone should have known!
that is why i am here! i am sure you all have looked at other web sites about all this rooting around and roms.
what you all do in customizing the cell phones is ??? really i do not have a better word GREAT!! (each generation has there own words and phrases, and sometimes we have to teach the old people like are parents the new stuff that has come out)
i would say this i am like all of you! but way older i think and definitely not any way near as smart as you all are here
as to stock or theme? i take it theme is the way the new rom will look??
i will say this as the way for the last 2 years looking at my phone well im borrrred with it
if it had a big pair of breast attached to it well i would not be here "SORRY LADIES!!!"
so yes new looking and way better to play with! STOCK ? no i had that
stable is my concerne with a new rom as once i do the flash (flahing the rom) to the phone i do not want to have to worry about this software to fix this bug or that bug then digging up this file to get this or that to work!
does this make any sence to you all??
ok an old man would think (sorry if im wrong here!!) if one was to install a new rom on ????phone all that would be needed
would be one file! do the vol. and power button go to revolutionary install zip file from sd card wait and poof your done!!
ya ya what joint is that old fart smoking!!!

Classic.
Maybe Synergy if you don't care about CIQ.
I ran AlterROM for awhile: it might be in your comfort zone and it provides a ton of installation options if you want to explore a little.
But really just start with Classic. The "updater" app included with Classic may need some kind of fix , read the last few pages of that thread to get current.
Have fun!

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
well i did the classic rom
the first time i flashed it and it all loaded up anything to do with the internet would not work
thought maybe i got a bad download from this crappy satellite hughes.net system we are on
so i redownloaded it again and wee hee it all works!!!
just wished the bottom screen buttons had some kind of lay out like the evo 4g did
phone, apps, etc.
i will run this and see what happens i hope no bugs pop up
ya and you are right there is alot of do-hickies added to this!
i just hope i do not mess something up now
if he had put in the butttons for the phone, apps, etc
from my stand point this rom would be the greatist
but it is my first rom i have flashed so who knows maybe there is one that is better out there!!!
I would like too THANK YOU ALL!!! Very much for your GREAT WORK HERE!! and your help with me on this venture!!!
THANKS ALLOT!!
Bill
Haha actually I agree with you, I was never a fan of what Tommy called the "Ghost Rosie". Ironically it's one of the things that really distinguishes the ROM and it took a lot of work for him to make it do that.
Anyway I'm pretty sure you can "turn off" that feature and bring back a always-visible phone button, either by a tweak (changing a setting that Tommy provided in some control panel somewhere) or via a mod (some flashable zip that modifies that Rosie).
Or you can always download a custom launcher from the market.

ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww

The jelly bean roms are not filled with bloat ware, they come with the apps needed for a root user to do the right things. Plus they are pretty stable at this point, just minor things that don't work, except it would be nice if we could get 4G Wimax back on the latest roms. Front facing camera just needs a driver as well as Wimax, but I do not miss those things as I am connected to wifi mostly.
