Came from OG evo to e4gt - Samsung Epic 4G Touch

Ive been reading on xda ever since i had a hero and rooted it using some guides on here and decided i would finally post lol. Upgraded my evo to e4gt on 28th of sept and havent looked back.
I rooted it last night using crawrj deodexed with busybox and its been running great so props for that. I have only experienced LOS twice since i have had my phone but those were instances that i was actually out of signal and it came back once i was out of the deadzone. So overall i love the e4gt compared to my evo .
Anyone else come from the evo to the e4gt? Also after rooting this phone any sweet mods that are must have yet? Thanks

I, too, came from the EVO4G to the E4GT. If you're having LoS issues try the LoST Kernel and if you wanna try a custom ROM try out Calkulin's (new but my favorite), ViperROM or StarBurst.

I came from EVO4G (which I absolutely loved) to EVO3D (HATED except for the 3D) to E4GT and this phone by far is the best one of all three.

I loved my evo 4g as well, my fiancee is using it now as i added a second line and moved my number to the new phone (e4gt) and gave her the evo . I do have a question, i odined this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1282415
and i am trying to make sure this did not change my kernel. I was completely stock before this so by what i read in his thread i should still have the kernel the phone came with correct?
My next question is can i odin this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1305099
which would be the same kernel i have at the moment but with root and cwm because i am currently rooted now correct?

The first one contains no kernel, so it's definitly stock, just rooted.
second is stock also.

Okay so the second one would keep root but add cwm. Thanks

okay so now i am rooted with cwm5 and stock pulled kernel with no yellow triangle on splash screen, thanks for the help guys

I started out with the HTC Hero as well, i upgraded to the HTC Evo and i loved it but i wanted the Evo Shift so not too much of a change there. But i got this phone about october 25 and i never looked back once, what an amazing phone this is, sure it feel like plastic but thats because they wanted a light weight phone.
I just rooted for the first time two nights ago and been having issues with media because of a file ".nomedia" that file tends to stop the SD scan so it skips over pictures, music and other things but since i removed it i can play music and see my pictures again except a few that the file locked them some how. but Since Calkulin came in the picture to E4GT that made the E4GT a much better phone :-D

Lol ya, i was kind of scared to root at first because of all the LOS reports after rooting but once they came out with the stock pulled with cwm its all good now really no reason not to root and boy do i love odin, makes life easy compared to when i first rooted the hero and evo by using command prompt and adb lol..... This phone is great, no actual LOS issues for me but i hope samsung/sprint release an update so everyone can enjoy the phone for what a beast it is.

lol i agree, i was thinking this odin stuff was going to be confusing, since i knew HTC phone used HTC sync for phone drivers. but when i found out needed samsung kies on the PC to get the drivers and started up odin it was a breeze, never thought rooting could be so easy. Since rooting the HTC Evo Shift from 2.3.3 was a PAIN where had to downgrade the Hboot.
I had one incident where i lost signal but that was the kernal i tested for a sec, i ended up going back to LoStKernelExp+ which is the bomb and glad Clakulin decided to use it.

I just came to the E4GT from the OG Evo myself, it's amazing. CM7 was nice but the blazing speed on this thing really is something to behold!

Guys OG Evo owner here myself... I still have both phone as I love them equally now. So I just flashed one of the OG Evos best developers roms... Caulkin is making roms for us guys so check it out here
The good ole days are back...lol

Going to get the E4GT today. Charging circuit went to hell on my EVO and it's way out of warranty. I can pay the $100 insurance deductible and get a refurbed EVO, or upgrade with $90 buyback on the EVO and get the E4GT for $110.
Sent from my HTC EVO 4G with Tapatalk

For those of us OG Evo folks who moved to the E4GT, how do you root it without getting LOS?
I have never gotten LOS on my E4GT & that has been what has given me pause in rooting. i really miss TI backup & a few other pieces of software. Teather would be nice too (Granted the web browsing speeds are too damm slow to bother).
Anyone want to point me in an OG Evo friendly direction on what & how to do it all?
I am starting to feel like I might join the Verizon bandwagon with the NP. I am getting sick of the unusable data speeds.
Thanks,
Rich

check out my original post on this thread, it has both .tars that i used to odin onto my phone to get root+stock pulled kernel + CWM5 and you should be set. LOS is not really caused by root, its an underlying problem in the hardware/software from what ive read on the forum and some kernels can cause it to happen more often and others less often. I am using the stock pulled kernel which is the exact same that is on unrooted phones so if you get LOS with that you would have gotten it with no root as well.

Anyone else feel like the phone ran better stock?

Maybe its just me, but when I first got the phone I had no problems.. Now after rooting and flashing custom roms I get random freezes, crazy battery drain and the infamous LOS.. and contrary to popular belief it has something to do with root.. I didn't root my phone or anything for at least a week after having it and none of the problems started until after.. Most people are having are probably having the same issues but since members on here always want to bite your head off anytime you say something they don't agree with, noone says anything. Im just making an observation and if you don't like it, feel free to hit the back button anyways, anyone feel the same way? BTW this isn't a rant against the developers. They are all great and I appreciate all the hard work.. I just feel like theres a missing link or something causing the problems.. what are ypur thoughts

I feel the same way... I'm getting serious battery loss after flashing a few of these roms.. with stock Rom I was getting a good 20 hours moderate use.. now with custom roms I'm getting like 10 hourz... I'm In noway knocking on any devs.. I do appreciate everyones contribution... I think it's a lil still early in the galaxy development

Mine ran great fresh out the box for sure, but thats also because it was fresh and had no apps installed etc lol.
Some roms seem to work better than others. Running Starbust 1.2 with zedo's 4.1 kernel and it's running absolutely great now, better than unrooted IMO.
Could be grass in greener on the other side syndrome, try unrooting and see if you still feel that it runs better stock. With ODIN it's pretty quick and easy to jump back from rooted to not and back again.
I will always be rooted because I love trying out new things and custom roms and overclocking/undervolting etc.. it's fun, like a hobby for sure. And sometimes that hobby especially with beta stuff isnt that stable lol!
Just having adfree and wifi tethering is more than enough reason for me to root. But when the really cool custom roms start coming out, it's gunna be on like donkey kong
I did run a rooted rom with the stock kernel, and I have to say I like zedo's better.
My 2 cents

I'm running stock + root.
There's nothing even remotely interesting to me in the current incarnations of the 3-4 roms available - they are all stock+ mods+ bugs.
Thank you very much but I can install those mods myself.
It's your own fault your phone is running like crap - don't mod it if you don't know what you are doing.

My stock-rooted E4GT is working just fine. No LoS, no random reboots, no freezing up, no locking up... no bloat, great battery life, no BS.
I had a ton of issues with LOS and some random reboots on Zedomax's root kernel. Flashed to the stock + CMR and havent had an issue since.
I'll be serious now.
Aside from me disagreeing that root is the cause of LOS issues (I got them stock too) this is all part of the fun of modifying your gadgets.
Fun? Yeah, I said fun. These are insanely complex devices and it is still very early in their development cycle. If you aren't game then style out of it for a while until things mature. Hacking around ain't for everybody... As long as I maintain basic functionality I/we will (eventually) figure out the rest. That's the fun part.
That said I haven't experienced any of what you describe, besides a few unexpected FCs.

Haha ur a clown.. I've probably been modding my phones before you had your first smartphone. I've been modding smartphones since the T-Mobile mda days and Ive had 8 or 9 since then all modded. I know the risks that come with modding. So don't assume because you jus make an ass out of... well you know the rest. Anyway.. I was just making a statement to maybe see if others are having the same issues, or if maybe its just my handset. I agree that LOS is not caused by rooted kernal. But, I did experience LOS alot more often than stock kernal. When I got the phone I stayed unrooted for a little over a week. I experienced 2 LOS during that time period. Once I finally rooted I was experiencing LOS @ least 3 times a day. LOS also drains the battery like crazy. One night I left the phone off the charger with 100% battery life. When I woke up, the phone was in LOS and only had 40% battery life. Well, today last night I finally switched to stock kernal. So far today no LOS.
I digress. Stock rom works perfect but I needed so mods that require root. The battery percent mod, wireless tether, and roam control. I think I'll wait for an AOSP rom before I try anything different roms.
I've tried all the currently available kernals for ths phone. I've rooted and unrooted. Right now, i'm on stock rooted. I'm still experiencing LOS, but it seems less frequent than when I was on custom kernals. It could be other criteria, though. I haven't tried any of the ROMs, only because I want a stock ROM to flash, if something goes wrong. I don't remember the epic taking this long to get the stock ROM available to us. My memory may be slipping, though.

this is why I will wait another week or 2 before rooting....this phone is awe sum as stock, but, like any newly released phone, it takes a few weeks before all the truly revolutionary stuff gets developed.
Most devs have a real job, a family, and a real life, so you can't really expect flashing "nirvana" only a week or so after a phone comes out.

Samsung Galaxy S II
I'm stock since day 1, when the phone first released, and I get LOS once a day. It's killing me not to have root, but I am not modding unless there is a factory RUU available straight from Samsung. Personally, and to no discredit to the developers, I don't trust the stock rom pulled from another phone. This phone is just a bit too new for me to be permanently altering it without a 100% safe way back. The OG Epic was made almost unbrickable, so it's reasonable to assume that a year from now, we will be rolling like pigs in **** with cool stuff to flash.
But I get what you are saying, and honestly, the community did not explode like I thought it would. Seems to be more HTC fans these days then Samsung, and just judging from Samsung's post launch support, or lack thereof, I can understand why...
Furthermore, my 3G speeds were horrible day 1 and continue to suck balls. Most times at work I can't even browse the market because of timeouts. 4G seems to work good though, and that's the only reason I haven't just returned this phone yet.
Check this thread:
http://community.sprint.com/baw/thread/76962?start=0&tstart=0
This is sprint's official forum, and they are just now admitting to the crappy radio implementation on this phone. Should have seen this coming a mile away, but honestly I was just too busy looking at this gorgeous 4.52" AMOLED+ screen to notice...
This is the first phone I've had were I don't feel the need to root, and I wouldn't have rooted until it had been perfected more.
Swyped from my Samsung Galaxy SII EPIC 4g Touch on XDA Premium!
my main reason for rooting was a few apps i had that needed root. as well as the battery percentage

Hello, Epic 4G Touch on its way

It should be here Tuesday. Been doing some homework, however, some quick Q's for you pros.
I'm coming from an HTC Evo4G and Evo3D, so Odin is somewhat unfamiliar...
What is the "best" root method?
Is most everything on the Epic similar to that of the Fascinate? I've rooted and flashed MIUI on one of those...
Anything I need to avoid like the plague????
Thanks!!!!

Touch recovery unless u like pretty bricks lol, i came from og evo and used oneclick odin and auto root to root my et4g only took about 10mins search the dev thread for them they were buried a little ways down when i rooted on friday and i had to read for a cpl hours to familiarize my self with all the new terms and the real differnces in the setup of this phone vs the evo but i previously owned a samsung intercept which was similar in setup so a refresher was all i really needed and familiarizing myself with the updated methods (odin vs swupdater) etc

No problem.
There are definitely great Developers on this phone.
My personal favorite ROM is by Rujelus22, he also just released a Beta Kernel with Touch Recovery.
Good Luck!
the "Touch Recovery" as long as you use one that is baked into a kernel is fine (ie rogue Hitman Kernel) Part of the issue at least with everything I've been reading is that when people use the "TEMP" touch (from say the clockwork app in market that allow a "temporary" touch recovery to be put in place) is when a lot of people have had issues. I use the Hitman repack and I've yet to experience any issues with it ever.
As for rooting the phone I do it the tried and true way always with Odin. I kept a Stock EG30 (what this phone came with at launch) Odin restore on my computer with sfhub's auto root. It takes a few longer to do a root process (I do believe that sf made a EG30 auto root that comes in Odin form Odin that and you have root with busybox and superuser)
Like I said I just go about it differently. That's how I root my friends phones and they don't mind the few extra minutes or so that it takes cause once it's done they have a phone always in 100% working order and ready to go.

there is a counter in the bootloader. After a non standard ROM is flashed, the counter is triggered and you get the "triangle of shame" that let's service people know you've flashed a ROM on your phone / voided your warranty. A USB jig can reset the triangle and the counter. you can get 'em on Amazon, Ebay, or you can make a jug for next to nothing...
Good luck and welcome to the fold! You're gonna love it!
P.S. I'm a firm proponent of the 4.0 Blazer ROM. Buttery smooth fast and great battery life... (FB15 modem)

I came from the evo too this phone was a little confusing at first but a little reading and it makes sense real quick ive settled on team nocturnals dark ics blend rom with stock kernel and fb21 modem and im getting about 6-8hrs screen on time
Edit: im at 10hrs 36mins on battery 8hrs 46mins screen on been trying to see how long it would last me with heavy use today been browsing xda most of the time and my display is 83% battery use cuz i have my brightness at about 80%
Edit 2: i forgot to mention im at 46% battery left on stock 1800 battery as well with that usage rediculous compared to my evo that was 3500 battery times for me my 1800 in my evo would be dead at 8 hrs screen on

I'm gonna throw this out there and hopefully prevent some bad things, I am a lurker who reads a TON. I am gonna strongly caution you against using touch recovery. Far too many phones have been getting bricked lately. Also, don't pay too much attention to modems or odin at first, eventually you'll get curious and go for it, but it's not really necessary for most things. If you are gonna go for odin, I'd suggest buying the mobile odin app from the market. Very handy app.
But be warned, stay away from touch recovery for now. Wait for the kinks to be ironed out.

How you got into this...

Well i was sitting back wondering how i got into rooting phones and decided to post this, How did you guys get into modding, rooting phones and when you started?
Well i got into this just before i got my tablet, which was a coby kryos, and it wasnt very good and didnt have the android market, so i did some research and found a website, and proceeded to do this thing called rooting. after it was all said and done, i thought i was done messing around with the phone, but then i find out about this other OS that is android but runs a little better than the stock rooted OS. Called Cyanogen mod 7. followed the instructions and it worked. so i took it further and rooted my phone i had at the time, the intercept. Thus this addiction was formed.
Everyday i would look to see if there was an update for my phone. or a updated version of cm7. Once i found out that there wasnt really a big community for either the kyros or the intercept i decided to go to a galaxy phone. took my sisters upgrade and got the E4gT. and since then its almost been smooth sailing for rooting, etc.
Now i am to the point where i want to start developing roms and what not, just have to get the courage to start such a big project.
How did you guys start with this? Whats your story? Keep us occupied while we wait for source and leaks.
Well I started all the way back from the sony psp days, I was super desperate to play final fantasy 7 and wasn't willing to buy my 3rd ps2 just to play it and the thought of it being portable and play it anywhere is too good to pass up, then learned how to start flashing custom firmwares for it, then moved to jailbreaking ipod touches(yes I had three) but jailbreaking is annoying, i actually had to go leaps and bounds just to make it do what android is capable of as stock(play any videos format, flash content, download anything online, etc) so just decided to buy my first android the galaxy s fascinate(redhead step child of the galaxy s line) and now here
i went to sprint and i had the choise to get a I-SUCK OR A galaxyi got a galaxy never like apples i saw videos on youtube of people modding the galaxy so i gave a try and here im learning
well for started i almost bricked my phone the first day lol tell how i came here and i went to the galaxy s2 forum not epic 4g touch.. lucky i figure it out that i was in the wrong forum and i came here and use sfhub one click l29 since i follow his instruction never had a problem again...
My first android phone was the HTC Hero. It got a couple updates and the last one sucked. It was horrible. Phone was super laggy and froze all the time. By then Gingerbread was out and Spirit said the phone would not run it. Did some research here on XDA and found people running GB who said the phone was much faster and more responsive. Did a bunch more reading to make sure I knew what I was doing and flashed a GB Rom. It was much better and had all kinds of new features.
Had to run the stock rom on this phone for awhile, but as soon as I found an easy way to root and mod it (thanks Sfhub), I flashed a custom Rom and never went back. I doubt if I will ever use a stock Rom again. I'll be getting a GS3 in September and there will be many great Rom choices by then. No doubt I will root it the day I buy it.This thread was a good idea. Thanks
How i started rooting phones, thank the htc touch pro for that. Ive used developers talents to modify 4 different platforms ;windows mobile palm, apple (ipad) and now my second android

Started hacking and cracking years ago. Mostly on PC's and Linux based machines. Then saw this thing called Android sweeping the market. Then saw the galaxy s. I had to have it. So I got the Mesmerize. I took a few days to familiarize myself with it. Then hit the web and found XDA. It was on froyo so I used z4root to root it. Then I started reading all the stuff I could do to it. With the help of some great devs and nice people I was flashing away. We had a lot of great devs for that phone. The Mesmerize and Fascinate was like brother and sister. We could swap kernels and such. And the fassy devs was nice enough to do things for the mes too. It was an awesome first phone. Then got this thing and love it. The devs here are nice and do great work. I miss some of the old devs but some of them show up in here from time to time. Times and sbrissen are some. I miss it JT1134 but heard he quite development cause he didn't have the time. Anyway. I love android and couldn't imagine a better hobby.

i think its a great hobby too. Even when im doing other hobbies, i seem to sneak away and go on premium and look around. i know theres flashaholics, well i think im more of a xdaholic.
and everytime i see people with android phones, i try to explain to them that they dont have full advantage of their phone, then i tell them to come here. most of them do some of them dont. This is a great community and the more the merrier. its always nice to be able to ask things about your phone with other people that have your phone. anyways continue...
I got into rooting devices during the Windows Phone days, with the HTC Touch Diamond. I remember the old days of roms kitchens and building roms, things will a little different back then.
I started with the original Samsung behold because I wanted free games and ever since then I can't stop lol

Ahh my HTC ppc 6700... Makes me feel old lol. Back when wm was the ****. I used to get stopped all the time by people asking me about my phone. And then when skyfire came out and we could watch flash videos. I use to show off.
Mightymike use to have the best roms. When he released roms his servers would crash. Nrg would come out with the latest and greatest for EVERY phone. Thats where sense started and always was memory hog. Back when xda was mainly a gsm website. Cdma people were all at ppcgeeks. I still see a few guys every now and then from ppcgeeks. Calkulins a legend. And ziggy, tsowen, santod with their themes. No2chem, conflipper, cmonex just to name a few. Lol
Sorry i was just reminiscing.

I used to have a Motorola hint. Always tried to play games, but no luck. Started learning about unlocking and got Motorola phone tools. I was able to fix my phone after I thought I killed it sideloading music onto my sd card. After that, me and my honey got Ascends, and I wanted to be able to fix my phone if I did something...stupid. read a bunch on rooting and one day, I took the plunge. I was a little apprehensive about voiding my warranty, but loved being rooted and Rom'ed. Got my Ascend 2 in December and rooted that. Then my buddy gave me his old HTC mytouch3g Fender edition. That was a beast to root, but I finally got it. Just waiting to save up for a better phone now...must mod!!! That's my story.

How I got into this
I've been reading about flashing and rooting ever since I got an evo 4g 2 yrs ago. Upgraded to the evo 3d and it came with a defective screen. I Ordered a Epic touch 4g to replace it and I got tired of all the b.s. about ics and decided to root. I can't believe I waited so long to do it. The bottom line is a week ago I flashed my 1st Rom using Odin one click, thank u qbking77, sfhub, sextape, chainfire , and everybody else who helped. Now I'm running cm9 nightlies after trying stock ff02 and ff11 and couldnt be happier. Im hooked. I rooted my girls evo earlier (s off and all) just to quench my thirst for a new rom to play with. I got a little to used to holding an evo again and accidently walked out the door with it on my way to work, lol. She's probably looking all over for the phone right now! Sorry honey. Hopefully she checks her email or fb on the PC ( cant call her) and sees my messages b4 she ends up tearing the house apart.
I have always been messing with everything electronic since I can remember. My dad worked on PC's so they where always around. I started really getting into phones with my Samsung a900 back in 05. I made a website on my home server that it could go to so I could side load apps and ring tones to it. Then I went on to WM and it just never stopped.
i had the HTC hero and wanted live wallpaper but i couldn't on stock so i rooted and ended up running cm7

I've always tinkered with electronics since I was little. Pissed my dad off a number of times taking apart computers and frying the HDD (didn't know static=bad day for a HDD when I was that little). I moved on to software from there. All of it is self taught the hard way or from the magic of Google. Eventually I got a Blackberry and started flashing "hybrid" setups on them until Android came out. My first Android was the MyTouch 3G Slide. I learned a lot from that phone before I moved to a G2. Overclocking a phone to 2GHz+ was just insane It was like having a nuclear reactor in my pocket. Now here I am. I've progressed to being able to decompile apk's, do what I want, and recompile a working app. We'll see what the future holds.
Good luck to every other aspiring dev on here. Don't get discouraged by any complexity or any trolls on here. I promise you're probably over thinking most things and trolls are just trolls.
Mytouch 3g. HTC decided to skip the 2.1 update and make me wait longer for 2.2 I took matters into my own hands. Thought I messed up when it got stuck at the splash screen. Turns out I missed the gapps file.(used to have to flash it before cm). After that all my phones were rooted within 24 hrs. G2,Mt4g, g2x, nexus s, and now my et4g. Unofficialy updated the dell streak 7 to honeycomb. And am currently trying to convince the gf that I won't turn the transformer prime into a $500 brick.

I am currently Evo LTE coming to SGIII

I have been a EVO users for (2) years making the change to SGIII. I hope I am making the right decision. Couple of questions:
S-off obtainable?
Bootloader Y/N?
Battery Life?
Good Stable Rom?
Tell me what you guys think.
We don't need some soff because Samsung usually isn't a ****
Everything else hell yeah
Some things even hit this phone first
Hell I'm testing something for a guy that will be one of a kind once he shows it off
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 2
The bootloader on the SGIII is not locked (so the equivalent of S-OFF on the HTC bootloaders does not apply). You simply use the Samsung Odin tool to flash a custom recovery so that you can then root or install a custom ROM. It is very easy to do.
The battery life has been good in the two weeks that I have had the phone but of course it depends on phone usage. I can burn the battery down if I am using the phone constantly but with my normal usage it lasts considerably longer than my Evo did.
When I look around I do find some other ROMs around but I have not made that leap yet. I am just running rooted stock. There is enough of an adjustment for me coming from Gingerbread Sense to Samsung ICS. I have not felt the need to do anything other than simple mods at this time.
I came to the SGIII after being on the Evo 4G for two years... I was torn between the Evo LTE and the Galaxy SIII. The things that drove me to the SIII were: replaceable battery, 2GB RAM, USB OTG...

Thanks for the update. I came for OG EVO to EVO LTE which I currently have but many problems have pushed me away. I did an (OTA) and brick my first EVO LTE. One thing that drives me nuts when i am in a call screen goes black. Non removable battery not a big fan either.
I will see tomorrow when I get my SGIII!!
S-off obtainable?
Samsung doesn't have S-On and S-Off but instead Locked and Unlocked. Unlike HTC's ****ty unlock, the samsung unlock fully unlocks your phone.
Bootloader Y/N?
There's a bootloader, but the place where you flash stuff like radio, recovery, etc. is in something called Download Mode. You can use an official samsung tool called ODIN to flash the stuff really easily.
Also every computer has a bootloader. A bootloader is what checks if all your hardware is working and initializes it when you start the device.
Battery Life?
Excellent. I can get 5 hours of screen on time. Similar to the Evo LTE.
Good Stable Rom?
All of the touchwiz ROMs are stable and good. They are all pretty similar so I'd recommend Blazer or FreeGS3.
If you want AOSP, Cyanogenmod nightlies are the best in terms of stability but AOKP and Paranoidandroid are still pretty stable. Keep in mind that none of the AOSP ROMs are stable, but are good enough for a daily driver. If you need stability, use touchwiz.
Wont regret it, my wife has an Evo LTE which i rooted (what a pain in the ass to get s-off) and the Gs3 feels way superior. Dev support for evo lte is not even close to the GS3. My previous phone was an EVO 3d and after having this phone no way im going back to HTC.

I think you'll be a happy camper. Just make sure you don't root it the second you get it out of the box. Make sure you provision everything first and make sure your 3G connection is working. I jumped too quick and didn't have any data and had to call Sprint.
Check the Dev sub forum and you'll find videos by qbking that will guide you step-by-step on how to root your phone. It's a simple process if you have any knowledge in the subject at all.
Yep... I think if HTC wants to survive, they need to take a few lessons from Samsung. They need to give up on the control thing. They are gaining nothing by doing that.

I never thought I'd ever hear anyone say this! Back when I was suffering through my T-Mobile Vibrant (Samsung Galaxy S) days, I was firmly in the #neveragain camp. I couldn't wait to jump to HTC. Then sometime around a year or so ago, things started changing. First, I guess because of the success of the galaxy line in general, a lot of devs started working on the Samsung phones. The Vibrant still suffered, because it had horrendous GPS (still does to some extent) locks and Samsung wouldn't release either the source code or updates. But the open source community worked wonders. I think the Vibrant was possibly amongst the first phones with an ICS ROM - working ICS ROM. I have been using ICS since December on my Vibrant. It got the JB ROM almost 2 months ago - a stable daily driver JB ROM.
Even so, this was all the open source community with Samsung doing Jack. When I saw the specs for the HTC One X, I was sure I was switching to HTC. Then Samsung hired Steve Kondik and I'm sure he's had something to do with this, but Samsung suddenly started releasing source codes left right and center. As others have said, they never locked the boot loader in the first place and now with the same device on millions of phones (with very minor changes), they have the best of both worlds. But I was still determined to get the One X - especially when Sprint added a SD Card, a kickstand and a dedicated camera button. The display is phenomenal (the one place it totally kicks the S3's butt), but the non removable battery was giving me some pause. I spent some time in the HTC EVO LTE forums and started seeing the multi tasking problems and decided that with the 2GB RAM and the removable battery and the developer community, I was better off with the S3. On top of that, I think HTC went in the other direction. From a nudge-nudge-wink-wink co-inhabitation with the open source community, they went with locked boot loaders, slower releases of the source code.
I finally pulled the plug and decided to go with the S3 - although I must say, I did debate for 5 minutes whether I should wait for the Note 2.
I don't anticipate running any custom ROMS yet on the S3 that I'll be getting next week. But I'll definitely be rooting it and installing Nova launcher. If Samsung hasn't released JB by next month, I'll probably be using CM10. It's already very stable on my Vibrant. It's sure to be stable on the S3 in a month's time.
I wish HTC well and hope they come out with a good phone the next time I'm in the market for a phone.
Made the switch myself today after my 4th defective evolution lte..

I had the evo lte for 3 days and could not get a 4g lte signal in my house. I never loose lte in my house with the s3
Sent from my bad ass Odexed Blue SIII
When I was due for an upgrade, well a line was eligible on my account, I was looking at going with the HTC LTE and decided that I wanted to be able to pull my battery so I didn't give it another thought. I upgraded from the S II to the S III, it was a good move. I had the phone for about 4 hours before I decided to root it and about a day and a half before I decided to put a custom ROM on it
I chose Team Sonic-FreeGS3 mainly because it has the same look and feel as the original stock with added tweaks.
I unplug my phone at around 7 am each morning and use my phone for email and text mainly while at work with some phone calls peppered in, when I get home usually around 530pm, I will have 75% battery life left. I'm very impressed with this ROM and it continues to get better and better. It's very stable and I haven't run into any issues with this ROM
You should check Motorola's policy. No single way to unlock bootloader :crying:
Next phone...definitely Samsung, maybe from Nexus line
Hey Derek, I came from the originals evo also. This has some keyboard lag at random times, and very minor issues, but hardly noticeable. Better than the new evo, compared to the old evo, this is heaven. Look at this, just from texting all day, kik, facebook, xda, and some web browsing and YouTube a little. But one thing I must warn you about, when you get it, at first battery life will seem to suck but it doesn't. You just happen to be going crazy with it not putting it down XD and downloading stuff and personalizing and all that. Screen on in the screen shot is total time on.

Sold the iPhone for $450 on eBay 2 weeks prior to the EVO release. I pre-ordered two. Sold one EVO for $350 and bought the S3 for $360 with an otterbox case of eBay. Couldn't pass that deal.

[Q] old man old phone old roms? help Please!

ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww
So my old brain kicks in and says mod your evo
ok at this point
so i rooted mt evo 4g with HTCDEV and revolutionary some how i ended up installing revolutionary but the phone still works
but yes i did not do a backup of the original system on the phone!!
well i am now thinking since i am rooted and s-off abot a custom ROM??
ok this is were the old man comes in
i only wish do do this once and most of you all here it seems do this every day as a type of hobby
what i would like to find in a custom ROM is everthing to work as the phone works now but hopefully even better
and to get rid of all this BS poopwear sprint has loaded into this phone
a ROM that looks great and new and as stable as stock?? with maybe some new apps to play with
So the Question is? Is there a ROM out here filled with the above???
Question 2
when you root a phone and s-off then do a custom rom, does sprint know what you have done or can they find out
and if so can they mess with you or bug you??
no i do not see men in black everywere!
just have seen post about watermarks and sprint knows! just was hoping to get the truth here!
I will start with your second question. The only way Sprint will know is if you have to take it on for service. So no worries there.
As far as a ROM goes there are many solid, stable, fully working roms. You will be limited to the older gingerbread roms. All the newer ones lack drivers for front camera and Wimax (4g). Now to find what you want will take searching on your part. There are a few different versions of sense which is HTC's launcher and then you have AOSP which looks completely different. When I get on a computer I will give you some links to check out.

Since you have been using the EVO for a few years and are used the the Sense UI I would recommed
starting out with The Classic. A very solid ROM by tommytomatoe. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
So many out there, all great, most of devs remove all the crap when we buid the roms guess it comes down to what you like.
You like stock, or themes,
Sent from my PC36100 using Tapatalk 2
The first two you listed will work 100% but the last one is a jelly bean ROM that has no front camera or 4G. Plus other minor issues. The classic would be like your stock ROM only way better.

Sorry if i sound like a dumb ass
i have gone to alot of web sites trying to dig all the info in can from the words i can make sence from!
i am not here to beat no one up or down!! i had asked help from one site when i went to root my phone
and was kind of kick for being a noob and asking a question the guy thought everyone should have known!
that is why i am here! i am sure you all have looked at other web sites about all this rooting around and roms.
what you all do in customizing the cell phones is ??? really i do not have a better word GREAT!! (each generation has there own words and phrases, and sometimes we have to teach the old people like are parents the new stuff that has come out)
i would say this i am like all of you! but way older i think and definitely not any way near as smart as you all are here
as to stock or theme? i take it theme is the way the new rom will look??
i will say this as the way for the last 2 years looking at my phone well im borrrred with it
if it had a big pair of breast attached to it well i would not be here "SORRY LADIES!!!"
so yes new looking and way better to play with! STOCK ? no i had that
stable is my concerne with a new rom as once i do the flash (flahing the rom) to the phone i do not want to have to worry about this software to fix this bug or that bug then digging up this file to get this or that to work!
does this make any sence to you all??
ok an old man would think (sorry if im wrong here!!) if one was to install a new rom on ????phone all that would be needed
would be one file! do the vol. and power button go to revolutionary install zip file from sd card wait and poof your done!!
ya ya what joint is that old fart smoking!!!
AGAIN THANKS FOR ALL YOUR HELP HERE
Classic.
Maybe Synergy if you don't care about CIQ.
I ran AlterROM for awhile: it might be in your comfort zone and it provides a ton of installation options if you want to explore a little.
But really just start with Classic. The "updater" app included with Classic may need some kind of fix , read the last few pages of that thread to get current.
Have fun!

i have gone to alot of web sites trying to dig all the info in can from the words i can make sence from!
i am not here to beat no one up or down!! i had asked help from one site when i went to root my phone
and was kind of kick for being a noob and asking a question the guy thought everyone should have known!
that is why i am here! i am sure you all have looked at other web sites about all this rooting around and roms.
what you all do in customizing the cell phones is ??? really i do not have a better word GREAT!!

Definitely go with classic. It was my first rom and I fell in love with it. Great battery life, has themes, and is very smooth.

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
Ok i will jump in here and do the ROM] The Classic v0.1.0 - finale
and i will download the ]TN_Elousions_3_Rooted_latest_OTA_5.07.651.6_supers onic_Deoxed_2/19/1
and try that one later
so my dumb old man question is now
1 do the vol down and power
since i have revolutionary installed i go to recovery then the revolutionary screen pops up and from that i chose install zip file from sd card
and that is it?? or do i do the same for both files this one v0.1.0p3 Supermagic Finale and this one classic.cx entry
from this web page http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1312414
or is this more over my head
The Tn elousions 3 is stock I have not done anything with that yet other then deoxing it.
My elousions 2.2.2 is the trixed out one. Just to let you no.
Don't forget to wipe dalvic and dalvic cache
Better yet wipe everything except SD card.
Make a nandroid backup before you do anthing.

HTC EVO 4G yup the old phone
well i did the classic rom
the first time i flashed it and it all loaded up anything to do with the internet would not work
thought maybe i got a bad download from this crappy satellite hughes.net system we are on
so i redownloaded it again and wee hee it all works!!!
just wished the bottom screen buttons had some kind of lay out like the evo 4g did
phone, apps, etc.
i will run this and see what happens i hope no bugs pop up
ya and you are right there is alot of do-hickies added to this!
i just hope i do not mess something up now
if he had put in the butttons for the phone, apps, etc
from my stand point this rom would be the greatist
but it is my first rom i have flashed so who knows maybe there is one that is better out there!!!
I would like too THANK YOU ALL!!! Very much for your GREAT WORK HERE!! and your help with me on this venture!!!
THANKS ALLOT!!
Bill
Haha actually I agree with you, I was never a fan of what Tommy called the "Ghost Rosie". Ironically it's one of the things that really distinguishes the ROM and it took a lot of work for him to make it do that.
Anyway I'm pretty sure you can "turn off" that feature and bring back a always-visible phone button, either by a tweak (changing a setting that Tommy provided in some control panel somewhere) or via a mod (some flashable zip that modifies that Rosie).
Or you can always download a custom launcher from the market.

ok Hi everyone!
no i do not have ADO (Attention deficit order) or any other brain dissorder! just old slow and feeble!
i got the HTC EVO 4G my two year contract with the sprint WOGS is up about two months ago my phone died and best buy got me a brand new one!
then i see that new samsung galaxy note 2 and ooooowww

The jelly bean roms are not filled with bloat ware, they come with the apps needed for a root user to do the right things. Plus they are pretty stable at this point, just minor things that don't work, except it would be nice if we could get 4G Wimax back on the latest roms. Front facing camera just needs a driver as well as Wimax, but I do not miss those things as I am connected to wifi mostly.
