Hi,
I was previously using the Xperia T and it was a known fact that therering wasnt working on JB but was fine on ICS. I just got my Xperia ZL C6506, flashed it with firmware 10.1.A.1.434 and rooted the phone. Everything is fine but as soon as I click on Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot I get a pop up that says "Error occured during tethering". My LTE is working fine and I managed to get it working 1 time only with the app WiFi Tether that I got from the market.
I dont understand why tethering is so hard to make work on Sony phones.
Am I the only one that can't get tethering to work or is everyone else experiencing the same problem on this firmware??
Is there a fix or something I can do about it??
Thanks!

I'm with Rogers but they are definetely not blocking tethering. I tested by reverting back my Xperia T to stock ICS and tried tethering since it wasn't working on JB. Tethering worked great on ICS which rules out my provider. I have read somewhere on XDA that root was breaking some things on the phone but the only thing I found that needed a fix was the NFC which was fixed by removing a directory named /data/usf. via root explorer.
Is your phone rooted or stock?
Which build are you on...395 or 434?
Thanks

Its odd its not working for you. Does Rogers have a different APN you would need to use for tethering?

Nah, not that I know of. It worked earlier on my Xperia T while on ICS firmware with the exact same APN settings. I tried calling tech support back when I was trying to get my Xperia T's tethering to work while on JB but the guy didn't even know what tethering was!! (thats tech support for ya).
I just flashed firmware 395 and same problem, I'm back on 434 but issue remains. I came across other people on Sony forums with the exact same error message but for different Xperia's. I need to flash the Rogers firmware back to the phone but I don't think anyone posted it and I don't have it. Starting to wonder if it's a hardware problem but very unlikely.

I'm going to go to a store tomorrow that has the phone with the Rogers firmware and see if that error comes up. I'm hoping it does so that it's not just on my end.
Hope I can find one, must of them have dummy phones.

I just happened to be looking for info on tethering issues with xperia devices and I came across a couple of articles on the web talking about how the Jelly Bean upgrade for the Xperia T broke tethering for Rogers customers. Whatever the issue is, perhaps it is firmware and carrier (combined) related, given that not only did you have the issue on the T as others have, but now on the ZL as well?
Just a thought .

Yep, I was thinking the same thing.. that would have made sense but the error comes up even without a SIM card in the phone so no carrier. I did a factory reset again for the million time and I don't even need to have any APN settings, the error message comes as soon as you click the tethering option. Doesnt matter if the phone has a SIM card or APN settings.
I verified against a phone in a store that was with the Bell firmware, phone didnt have a SIM card in it and when activating tethering, all is good, no errors come up. The phone was running build 350.
I'm starting to think that it's a hardware problem.
So desperate! :crying:
Is there a difference between C6503 and C6506. They both support LTE. I'm wondering what will happen if I flash the C6503 firmware on my C6506. Has anyone attempted this?

The problem is the APN settings.
Check all the APN settings on your phone.
If one of them has "dun" in "APN Type" field, your phone will use this APN setting for tethering.
Either remove this APN setting completely or if you can not remove the setting as me, clear this APN setting field.
None of the APN settings should have "dun" on their APN Type field unless you want to set a different APN account for tethering.
APN Type "default, supl" for the main APN setting is enough for most of the cases. Please check with your operator.
Hope this will solve your problem.

I was actually never able to figure out what was causing this problem. The issue used to occur even without a SIM card or any APN setting at all. In my current APN settings, I have a "*" instead of "DUN" in the APN type.
The problem occurs in build 434 and I think 395. Build 253 doesnt give me any errors and tethering works. Also tried in build 423 and that also works. I wasnt happy with 4.2.2 so I flashed back to 253 and no problem. So somehow, 434 doesnt seem to like Rogers (carrier) or vice versa
I would really love to know what can possibly be causing this...

...so here I am.
I am using Baseband Switcher v4 on the retail nordic sbf that I got from this thread.
Build: JOREM_U3_3.4.2 177-5
Baseband Version: EPU93_U_00.59.01
Android Version: 2.2.2
Carrier: T-Mobile
I've tried:
US T-Mobile 3.4.2-107-4 (coverage, no data),
US T-Mobile 3.4.2-107-9 (which is my original stock Defy; coverage, no data),
US T-Mobile 6.xx.0 (no coverage or data),
and others.
I still can't get data on my phone. If anyone has any suggestions or knows of any threads that I may have not found while searching I would appreciate it. I am open to other suggestions. If I should flash another rom, I'm fine with that. I would like to avoid moving up to Gingerbread, but am open to almost anything to get my data back. Thanks, all =D
Change radio to your region: http://www.worldtimezone.com/gsm.html (source)
No, set your APN first to get Data connected...
You can request it from your service provider.
Having the right baseband but without APN set properly will also give you no data line.

Well that was it. Not wanting to wait until the morning to figure this out, I googled "tmobile apn" and found many instances of people not having the correct APN. So I found one situation that looked similar to mine, created a new APN entry called T-Mobile US with the APN as http://mms.msg.eng.t-mobile.com/mms/wapenc. Next thing I know, I'm on 3G/H! YAY! Thanks again, farsight73, for the incredibly useful help! =D

After messing for a while with the baseband switching and after believing my phone was blacklisted for some awkward reason - I switched to China ME722 - which actually holds the correct frequencies for T-Mobile in the USA.
Guess what - it works.
With the T-Mobile frequencies on the defy my sim couldn't register on the network...
I get only edge - but that's perhaps because there's no good coverage where I am now. I'll update with 3G and stuff soon.
Program very useful and solves many problems of network
Hi guys,
i have searched far and wide and cant quite find an answer to this.
i have a Rooted SE Xperia Arc LT15i running ICS 4.0.4 with kernal 2.6.32.9 and locked bootloaded and i am unable to use my WiFi tethering.
What happens is i can turn my HotSpot on and connect to it from my laptop, but when i try and access any internet pages i do not get any data.
I have tried this on 2 ipads, a htc desire and 2 lenovo laptops and all do the same thing. (it says connected but no data gets through)
From reading online i have found this to be a known issue, although Sony Ericsson deny this and say there is no issue.
Basically i am looking for either a fix for this or a custom ROM that has this working.
Is there anything that anyone can suggest?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated as i really need this to be working and really dont want to have to go back to crappy GingerBread.
What does your internet settings say under Network Type?
It should read default, supl. Some people also suggest adding dun.
I had same problem and my APN type was already "default, supl".
I read somewhere that adding ",dun" could solve the matter and it worked for me.
So now my APN type is "default, supl, dun"
Edit it and try.

That's cool. You didn't say anything that I didn't already mention earlier.
my settings are: default,supl,a-gps
i have tried default,supl
also: default,supl,dun
also: default,supl,a-gps,dun
none of these made any difference, devices could connect but still no data. however phone was always able to get data on each setting.
my network carrier (Optus) tells me that those settings should be "internet" but when i do that i lose data all together

While on GB, you could use tethering?
A google search threw up this article. [Link]
yes tethering worked fine before updating
interesting article, however i am on post-paid and when speaking to optus, they told me that tethering is enabled and that there is no restrictions on my service. they were confused as to why changing the APN type to "internet" made me lose all data connection. they believe that to be correct and my current settings to be incorrect.
i was only able to get the current settings by using the 'download internet settings' feature under the xperia settings menu
anyone with any ideas?
very happy to move to a custom rom that has this feature working but dont really want to unlock my bootloader.
any suggestions?
Hi, I've got the same issue. I've posted on the Sony discussion boards but there's a noticable silence on anyone having a fix.
I've got SE Xperia Arc LT15i. Wifi tethering did work but after official Sony ICS upgrade it doesn't work. I've tried the whole range of APN suggestions above, none of them worked. Happy to use custom ROM etc but wondering if anyone does have Xperia Arc & ICS working as a wifi tether. Anyone any ideas?
See this thread for the tethering fix.
Thanks Candy[MAN] for the quick reply.
I'd previously tried all manner of APN settings without success. I've tried those listed on the link but a strange thing happens, the APN does not appear. If I change an existing APN to these settings, the APN disappears.
A key point I didn't mention was that I'm on Vodafone in the UK, and it seems the country code info might have screwed things up (MCC & MNC). Changing the MCC/MNC values doesn't allow me to create an APN, leaving them the same and using wap.cingular allows the APN to be created, but wifi tethering still doesn't work
So I got a new SGS3 and it works fine, except when I am in 3G. When I am in 3G I can receive and place calls but no data. Att support was no help, so I figured I would check here. As far as I can tell it is either a APN, Gateway, or Account settings issue (the later being something I can not do anything about). I say this because my n1 gets signal fine here, and it seems to run fine, so long as it is 4g.
Any ideas? Also, does the SGS3 have EDGE support?

I have not rooted or anything, I have tried some APNs but I was hoping other people might help me out with something else to try. I don't really buy the whole " if you are stock... there is nothing that can be done" What if I was trying to get help with a stock developer build of my n1 (which I have previously) or are you asserting that without rooting I will not be able to fiddle with the modem settings?
What I'm saying is the phone comes ready out of the box. Unless you have changed something then it is a network problem. You will have to take it up with AT&T.

Thank you guys for trying to help but I know all this. I am just in the period of time I can take it back and I don't want to risk that by bricking it while monkeying around.
I (Maybe) have isolated the problem, they said that I was set up for LTE and there are some issues with proper propagation of properties. Anyway problem "May" only effect people on ATT with Samsung S3s bought at BestBuy locations and the upgrade includes unlimited data. Still working will update tonight....

Hey Everyone,
I have been going through hell troubleshooting this fone for a week now. I would like to have this thread to keep a log of what has been going on. Any and all help is greatly appreciated.
Back story
Got phone from eBay. I know, I know. It is a prototype etched with "Not For Sale CB5XXXXXXX" on the front of the bezel (numbers hidden for privacy). The phone is in immaculate condition with a perfect screen and absolutely zero scratches. It appears to be used very little. It had a screen protector installed so perfectly that it wasn't even noticed by the seller. Also, it came with a white back cover but the bezel is blue. All these facts leave me with some questions.
The sticker under the battery reads:
Sony Ericsson
MoP 1251.18 11W19
Type: AAD - 388087 - BV AA CB5
Prototype not for sale S1 1251-5447.18
Not Type approved Prototype build: TP Blue AT&T
There are 2 bar codes and S/N and some other numbers and Made in China after that.
(If any of the above number should be kept private please let me know and I will remove them.)
More Back Story
Phone works 100% stock with my T-Mobile SIM card. I can get into fastboot fine. I can successfully flash superuser to get root on the stock ROM. I can then flash kernels too. I verified that it is unlocked with the Sony unlock code.
Here is where it gets good.
When I flash ROMS, all hell breaks loose. Gin2Jelly worked great! I had partitioned my SD card and loaded all my apps with Titanium Backup and was about to use it as a daily driver..... until I inserted the SIM. No service. SIM works fine in other phones.
Then I started trying other ROMS. The would flash okay. After booting and waiting the prescribed 10 mins as usual for all ROMs multiple issues arose. No icons, H/W buttons not functioning, etc.
This is where I am at. What could be going wrong?

Hmmm.... I forgot to mention one other issue. On Gin2Jelly, I tried that and was unable to set them at all. They wouldn't save. I was so frustrated. If I set the Name, APN, MMSC and backed out without saving the new APN would show up in the list. Once I set the MCC and MNC, and either saved or backed out, the new APN disappeared.
The SIM card simply would not be recognized. I even tried an app called Tweakker APN INTERNET MMS that is supposed to help with this glitch and no go.
Thanks for the reply. I wish it was that simple.

Just tried Turbo Gamer Edition. NO SERVICE!!!! I guess I'm not going to get this phone working. The ROM loads fully but I cant enter any APN settings. They won't save. Tweakker East Internet and MMS app not detecting SIM card either. This effin blows.

My SIM won't work in other ROMs so it won't let me set APN settings. I've tried that app as well. The app only works if it can detect a SIM card. The phone won't even detect a SIM card unless I am on FTF R800a_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.ftf. This is my main issue. Does this mean I am SIM locked?

READ the OP please
So here is a run-down of what I just did.
1. Flashed R800a_3.0.1.B.0.270_ATT.ftf via Flashtool in Quickboot mode
2. Booted into stock ROM and inserted SIM card and was able to browse and make calls.
3. Entered bootable recovery wih Quckboot
4. Flashed Lupus 720p
5. Booted into stock ROM and was still able to call and browse
6. Made a NANDroid backup
7. Wiped Cache/Dalvik
8. Installed Gin2Jellybean 2.4.0 from Lupus CWM
9. Booted, waited 10, rebooted
10. SIM not detected. Unable to enter APN settings. Tweakker APN app says "Your SIM card cannot be used. Please make sure your SIM card is inserted and you are in an area with GSM signal and then restart the process..."
I don't understand how my SIM can work in OEM ROM but can't in all other ROMs.
Am I doing something wrong? Should I try another FTF?

Gotcha. My bad. I been troubleshooting this for like 2 weeks. Not really sure, LOL!
So,
I hooked up with Alejandrissimo who was able to properly unlock my phone. He said that it was unlocked previously with some copycat tool rather than the one he used. The copycat tools touch the hardware side of the device and the original tool doesn't. This prevented the usual method of unlocking and more steps were needed. This test involved the "Testpoint" method. This required me to remove the sticker under the battery and use a paper clip ( I also tried a small wire but the paper clip worked best) to short one contact to a ground spot for the battery while plugging the USB in and then clicking a button on the tool on my screen. All the while, Alejandrissimo was remoted into my PC and helping me along the way. This is almost necessary because both of your hands are tied up with the paper clip and USB plug. It was intense, LOL. Of course I donated to him for his time.
I am still testing. It seems to be randomly rebooting after R800a_4.0.2.A.0.79.ftf, / LuPuS_zeus_Stock-gB+iCsv5 / Gin2JellyBean v2.4.0.
UPDATE After flashing a stable firmware, LuPuS_zeus_GingerBreadv10-ram.img, and Gin2Jelly, sadly my SIM card is still not detected yet worked in the ROM on the phone after the process was done.

Any of those will work on your R800at , I flashed [.79] without problems. I have flashed them all in the past and I have used my device on T-Mobile and AT&T. Also don't worry about the whole R800a and R800at thing, they are basically the same phone, both capable of HSPA+ just released in different regions of the world. Which is why all of those firmwares will work on your phone. The [.270] is not the most current ATT firmware though, [.285] is.
Also you should note, that flashing a stock firmware is only for setting partition sizes and the baseband, after you flash a custom kernel and rom, most of the stock firmware you flashed in the FTF is gone. It is just good practice to flash a stock firmware and also gives you a clean install to easily troubleshoot from.
Per your OP though, I can tell you that booting up after flashing something and having no icons and hardware buttons not working is a wrong firmware problem, whether it be the FTF or the Rom you flashed.
I do know that every Gsm firmware has booted on my R800at without problems, which makes me wonder if some of your problems could be due to the fact your R800at was only a prototype and its hard to say what was modified for the actual release compared to yours and even compared to ozzmanj's

Gotcha.

His prototype sounds like mine (see photos) I have flashed several ROMS before settling on NXT LE. And I had no issues with any of them. Again though I did have to hit up Alejandrissimo to sim unlock it as my bootloader was unlocked when I got it. Only difference was mine was the standard black and no AT&T branding.
i cant get mobile data to work after updating to cyanogenmod 10.2 or 10.1. i have tried several diff builds same problem every time. I can dial and and send texts just cant get mobile data to work. wifi works fine. can someone point me in the right direction.
i have tried messing with apn settings but dont really know what i am doing. do i need to flash new modem?.
Try flashing a different ROM and see if your data comes back. I just had this same issue with one of my S3 phones... no matter what ROM I flash I get no service. I am actually calling AT&T tonight for a warranty replacement.
stock rom

Sounds like APN to me. Search your APN settings for whatever particular plan u have and make sure they are entered correctly.

Should be able to find them right on here, just search for your phone, your carrier, and whatever plan u have. I use straight talk, so I have to make a new APN everytime I flash a new ROM, its no big deal though, only takes a couple minutes...
I had a similar issue once. It turned out I had the ATT apn selected but not the ATT LTE one. Once I selected the lte one it worked (and it still worked when I was on 3g.)
