Hi guys,
i have searched far and wide and cant quite find an answer to this.
i have a Rooted SE Xperia Arc LT15i running ICS 4.0.4 with kernal 2.6.32.9 and locked bootloaded and i am unable to use my WiFi tethering.
What happens is i can turn my HotSpot on and connect to it from my laptop, but when i try and access any internet pages i do not get any data.
I have tried this on 2 ipads, a htc desire and 2 lenovo laptops and all do the same thing. (it says connected but no data gets through)
From reading online i have found this to be a known issue, although Sony Ericsson deny this and say there is no issue.
Basically i am looking for either a fix for this or a custom ROM that has this working.
Is there anything that anyone can suggest?
Any and all suggestions are greatly appreciated as i really need this to be working and really dont want to have to go back to crappy GingerBread.
What does your internet settings say under Network Type?
It should read default, supl. Some people also suggest adding dun.
I had same problem and my APN type was already "default, supl".
I read somewhere that adding ",dun" could solve the matter and it worked for me.
So now my APN type is "default, supl, dun"
Edit it and try.

That's cool. You didn't say anything that I didn't already mention earlier.
my settings are: default,supl,a-gps
i have tried default,supl
also: default,supl,dun
also: default,supl,a-gps,dun
none of these made any difference, devices could connect but still no data. however phone was always able to get data on each setting.
my network carrier (Optus) tells me that those settings should be "internet" but when i do that i lose data all together

While on GB, you could use tethering?
A google search threw up this article. [Link]
yes tethering worked fine before updating
interesting article, however i am on post-paid and when speaking to optus, they told me that tethering is enabled and that there is no restrictions on my service. they were confused as to why changing the APN type to "internet" made me lose all data connection. they believe that to be correct and my current settings to be incorrect.
i was only able to get the current settings by using the 'download internet settings' feature under the xperia settings menu
anyone with any ideas?
very happy to move to a custom rom that has this feature working but dont really want to unlock my bootloader.
any suggestions?
Hi, I've got the same issue. I've posted on the Sony discussion boards but there's a noticable silence on anyone having a fix.
I've got SE Xperia Arc LT15i. Wifi tethering did work but after official Sony ICS upgrade it doesn't work. I've tried the whole range of APN suggestions above, none of them worked. Happy to use custom ROM etc but wondering if anyone does have Xperia Arc & ICS working as a wifi tether. Anyone any ideas?
See this thread for the tethering fix.
Thanks Candy[MAN] for the quick reply.
I'd previously tried all manner of APN settings without success. I've tried those listed on the link but a strange thing happens, the APN does not appear. If I change an existing APN to these settings, the APN disappears.
A key point I didn't mention was that I'm on Vodafone in the UK, and it seems the country code info might have screwed things up (MCC & MNC). Changing the MCC/MNC values doesn't allow me to create an APN, leaving them the same and using wap.cingular allows the APN to be created, but wifi tethering still doesn't work

Can't see anything else. I have problems with almost every site, I see this text above...
I tested few browsers, always the same.
I even change network from T-Mobile to Orange. Same stuff ;/
I checked APN - they are perfectly good.
Using Wi-Fi there is no problem, everything works just fine.
Using another mobile - works fine.
So there is a problem with my Desire HD.
I have not rooted it! Few months ago, I installed some stuff for proxy, but I uninstalled it quickly.
Best regards. Thanks
refresh, still anything
I`m wondering, if I would erase everything, it will resolved my problem?
Similar thing in UK a while back with Orange.
Only happens on certain models, and was fixed a couple of days later.
It might be worth a full reset, if its the proxy stuff still causing problems.

My University uses a 802.1x EAP network and I'm having problems connecting my Xperia Neo to it. It always finds the network, but sometimes it will connect and sometimes it won't. When it doesn't connect it will just cycle through "scanning," "connecting," "disconnected." The only way I can get it to connect is to turn the wifi of and back on again and hope it works. This is my first Android phone so I'm not sure if this is a known issue or if it is specific to my device. I would really appreciate some help with this. Thanks.

EDIT: Just realized that they finally added a forum for the Neo. Could a mod please move this thread. Thanks.
Bump. Could a mod please move this to the neo forum. I don't want to double post it. Thanks.

At my university (TU Delft), they also use 802.1x. have you set up the right settings?
EAP: TTLS
Phase-2: PAP - Sometimes, PAP is switched of when you exit the edit screen, just try is again.
Sometimes the username is different from expected, i.e. my student e-mail is [email protected], but the login is [email protected] and anonymous identity is [email protected]
Have you tried asking your IT helpdesk, if available.
I know that the settings are right since it works sometimes and I followed the instructions on my school's website. My school uses MSCHAPv2, when I choose this option the next time I view the settings it is unselected also.

key issue: overseas mobile network carrier VS verizon...
I have tried at least 4 or 5 versions of ICS, still don't know how to get mobile data working, the newest version I tried was "(Rom)(Leak) 7.01.605.01 Verizon Vivow Ics Sense 3.6 *8.21.12" , just like AOKP and MIUI, everything else works fine (wifi, camera, video etc) except mobile data. And unlike CM 7.1 7.2 which has android 2.3.*, I can't even see the "APN" or "Preferred networks" option under Networks category.
So I googled a lot of different ways but nothing really worked. I have edited the "build.prop" file, "spns.xml" to edit the operator code from verizon to my own carrier, also tried using 3rd party software to autoset apn, normally these steps would succeed in CM7.* , but no luck in ICS....
Does anybody know how to solve the problem or experience the same here?
I think I read that, starting with ICS, 3rd party apps cannot modify APNs so that is probably part of why you are having trouble. Try downloading APN Settings Shortcut from the the Play Store. Its a widget that is just a shortcut to the APN settings on your phone. That might allow you to make the changes you need. Sorry I can't be of any more help. I have no experience using phones on other networks, I only know as much as I do because of having to fix APNs to get MMS working on certain roms.
did you flash the firmware (radio) update with that leak ROM? I have had no issues with 3g or WIFI on any other roms before the leak, and the issue with that one is easily overcome with a couple toggle flips. Just the noob's first thought.
Also...seems stupid to repeat, but....make sure the back cover is on, all the way.
yeah u right, unless 3 party apn tool has been added to part of the system, i finally got it to work after re-editing the 2 files above and a couple of reboots...

Glad you got it working. That makes sense considering I often have to enter apn settings 2 or more times for them to work.

Hi, I've been looking for something like this for a while and tried pretty much all the options on google. And my last hope, PdaNet with FoxFi addon has failed me too, so I've pretty much run out of options.
So, what I'm looking for is to turn my GN into a wireless router without my network detecting that I'm doing so. A lot of the tethering apps out there can achieve this by enable Bluetooth or USB tethering, but that's not how I want it, I want to turn it into a wireless router. Sadly FoxFi fails everytime I try to enable it.
So any of you genius out there knows of an app that can do this, please share. Thank you so much in advance.

If you root and flash any custom rom, it has native built in tethering. As for unrooted apps u named them all
I actually have the AndroidME custom rom installed and have root. It does have the native tethering option, but I always thought that feature is detectable by the wireless carriers. Or have I been torturing myself this whole time? lol.
The native tethering app goes undetected for me when I use my laptop, but if I connect my ps3 to it, I get the redirect when trying to use the browser. None of the third party apps work on my Rom at all. Frustrating, but I've just gotten used to not using my ps3 online.

If your on tmobile Try this..
Create new APN
Settings, wireless and networks, more, access point names.
Name it some thing like "data" and under APN put "epc. T-Mobile.com" (no quotes)
Leave everything else blank and save, then set as default.
Profit
Hope this helps.. used to work on my amaze.
This always solved
the T-Mobile nag screen problem
If foxfi didn't work then there is a setting you need to ad to your APN settings.
I use the default tethering app in android and haven't had any problems.
What I did was make sure my APN type in my APN settings read the following with no spaces.
"default,supl,mms,dun"
You should be able to use the default tethering and hotspot with no problems after that.
Works on both stock and rooted devices across the board.
If your running jellybean, then you don't have to add "dun" but I add it anyway for good measure.
Happy tethering.
Thanks for the tips, gonna be moving to simple mobile next month and hopefully these tricks will work.

I could be wrong here, if you set the user agent of your desktop to a mobile browser signature, the carrier will only see mobile data and not tethered desktop data

I don't know which one of your fixes work but I did both and I now have wifi tethering using Fox-fi unrooted with my unlimited T-mobile 4g data plan! Thanks! Been searching for days on how to get it to work since I got my Nexus 7.
And it seems to work fine with the native hotspot app. I just downloaded an additional widget called Hotspot Toggle to make it easy to turn on and off.
Thanks again folks!
The easiest way is to use a User Agent Switcher.
You can read more details about it on here - http://gezby.com/viewtopic.php?f=29&t=69
Download "Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot Widget" and put that on a homescreen. A simple push of that icon will activate native tethering and bypass carrier check ups. Been using it for the last year with zero issues.
FWIW I've been using Native tethering since I first bought my VZW Nexus in December without a hitch. Since switching to T-Mobile I have also been using the Native tethering to my Nexus 7 without issue. I haven't used a tethering app since the gingerbread days

No the other guy is right.
Using a User Agent Switcher you will be able to bypass tethering blocks set by your network provider.

Hi,
I was previously using the Xperia T and it was a known fact that therering wasnt working on JB but was fine on ICS. I just got my Xperia ZL C6506, flashed it with firmware 10.1.A.1.434 and rooted the phone. Everything is fine but as soon as I click on Portable Wi-Fi Hotspot I get a pop up that says "Error occured during tethering". My LTE is working fine and I managed to get it working 1 time only with the app WiFi Tether that I got from the market.
I dont understand why tethering is so hard to make work on Sony phones.
Am I the only one that can't get tethering to work or is everyone else experiencing the same problem on this firmware??
Is there a fix or something I can do about it??
Thanks!

I'm with Rogers but they are definetely not blocking tethering. I tested by reverting back my Xperia T to stock ICS and tried tethering since it wasn't working on JB. Tethering worked great on ICS which rules out my provider. I have read somewhere on XDA that root was breaking some things on the phone but the only thing I found that needed a fix was the NFC which was fixed by removing a directory named /data/usf. via root explorer.
Is your phone rooted or stock?
Which build are you on...395 or 434?
Thanks

Nah, not that I know of. It worked earlier on my Xperia T while on ICS firmware with the exact same APN settings. I tried calling tech support back when I was trying to get my Xperia T's tethering to work while on JB but the guy didn't even know what tethering was!! (thats tech support for ya).
I just flashed firmware 395 and same problem, I'm back on 434 but issue remains. I came across other people on Sony forums with the exact same error message but for different Xperia's. I need to flash the Rogers firmware back to the phone but I don't think anyone posted it and I don't have it. Starting to wonder if it's a hardware problem but very unlikely.

I just happened to be looking for info on tethering issues with xperia devices and I came across a couple of articles on the web talking about how the Jelly Bean upgrade for the Xperia T broke tethering for Rogers customers. Whatever the issue is, perhaps it is firmware and carrier (combined) related, given that not only did you have the issue on the T as others have, but now on the ZL as well?
Just a thought .

Yep, I was thinking the same thing.. that would have made sense but the error comes up even without a SIM card in the phone so no carrier. I did a factory reset again for the million time and I don't even need to have any APN settings, the error message comes as soon as you click the tethering option. Doesnt matter if the phone has a SIM card or APN settings.
I verified against a phone in a store that was with the Bell firmware, phone didnt have a SIM card in it and when activating tethering, all is good, no errors come up. The phone was running build 350.
I'm starting to think that it's a hardware problem.
So desperate! :crying:
Is there a difference between C6503 and C6506. They both support LTE. I'm wondering what will happen if I flash the C6503 firmware on my C6506. Has anyone attempted this?

The problem is the APN settings.
Check all the APN settings on your phone.
If one of them has "dun" in "APN Type" field, your phone will use this APN setting for tethering.
Either remove this APN setting completely or if you can not remove the setting as me, clear this APN setting field.
None of the APN settings should have "dun" on their APN Type field unless you want to set a different APN account for tethering.
APN Type "default, supl" for the main APN setting is enough for most of the cases. Please check with your operator.
Hope this will solve your problem.

I was actually never able to figure out what was causing this problem. The issue used to occur even without a SIM card or any APN setting at all. In my current APN settings, I have a "*" instead of "DUN" in the APN type.
The problem occurs in build 434 and I think 395. Build 253 doesnt give me any errors and tethering works. Also tried in build 423 and that also works. I wasnt happy with 4.2.2 so I flashed back to 253 and no problem. So somehow, 434 doesnt seem to like Rogers (carrier) or vice versa
I would really love to know what can possibly be causing this...
