AS a user and developer for the andriod device and google has announce that it won't update the s3 on U.S variant because it has a duo core chip ...and to tell you the truth I think it's bullocks , now how come apple update there software for their phones and I'm talking about 3GS til iphone 5 this what lack in andriod , I understand companies want to sell there " new blah blah phone, but its all about marketing... i am really disappointed with the news but if you dont believe me take a look at the link http://legalpronews.findlaw.com/article/0ghn3QJeCYajg?q=Android
it would be samsungs choice not googles...
1. Samsung and each of the US carriers, NOT Google provide the updates to the GSIII.
2. Google only provides updates to the Nexus line.
3. That is the same type of speculative / rumor stuff that came out about the single-core devices when ICS and JB both came out, just like the pre-release rumor about GB when it came out... no phones under either 756 MB or 1GB of RAM and/or under 4 inch screen would be able to run it. my wife's and my daughter's MT3G-S's both ran it just fine with only 600 MHz and 512 MB of RAM.
simply put just the same old b.s. rumors flying around before Google themselves have even unveiled the new OS... it's just some blogger shooting off their mouth trying to get people to jump to the "new hotness" so they don't get left behind.
Samsung nor Google nor the carriers "NEED" do nothing..
While it's true that there are those phone users, such as ourselves, that are tech savvy and want the latest software refresh, look at the shear number of shipped phones! Far in excess of all the registered users on any tech forum added all together.
This means that the average S3 owner only cares that the phone does exactly what was advertised at the time of their purchase and remains stable in operation. S3 has already achieved this, so the "need" is not there. Tens of millions of S3 owners will continue on unaware or even care about that "update".
Now you could argue that we "want" the updates, especially 4.2.2 with premium suite and also Key Lime Pie (5.0). But that argument needs to include how this is financially "beneficial" to Samsung and the carriers that sell their phones.
I agree, I really, really, really want Key Lime Pie along with new S4 type features in the premium suite. Please, pretty please give it to me. I'll then show off this capability and how you care for your customers Samsung. Perhaps enough new purchases of even the older S3 will occur to cover the cost of the new development/testing? So please?
But to demand it as a NEED, meh!
Besides, anything that happens on another Galaxy variant is normally ported to other variants. Like Verizon base sporting multi window.

Yep, that'll punish good ole Samsung :cyclops:
Well Supposely samsung will update to 4.2.2 with some of the features of the s4 in May or June. I seriously doubt that as I imagine samsung will think it will hurt sales of the s4, a newer phone with the same firmware of the s3. A. It might come late summer or more waiting, at this point they should just stop 4.1.2

At the same time it may give a Samsung a bad reputation. Especially since they are really competing against Apple they don't have to do anything but it would be in their best interest to do so.

I thought that in order to brand their devices as Google devices (has stock play store access), manufactures have to keep their devices up to date for at least 18 months from the date of release?
If that's true then we should get updates until at least November 2013.

I was thinking of the android update alliance. Apparently it was non binding so there was literally nothing forcing the manufacturers to keep their word.

It's not like these manufacturers aren't making loot on android. Google should put the screws to them and hold them to the update alliance agreement or pull their Google device status. Uphold the quality of the platform or lose play store (all gapps for that matter). Think the s3 would be so wildly popular with no gapps? Plain and simple, if they want to make money on android, they should be held to its release schedule.

I don't think Google cares as much how slow these other manufacturers are delivering updates. If they did they would stop releasing little updates every few months and just prep a big one for phones to catch up, and frankly they do sell phones. Their selling point with the nexus devices is you buy a nexus and you'll get all the goodies earlier than everyone else. Bottom line though most consumers don't care about updates I know several people with phones like the blaze still on GB and think is the best thing ever. We are a small community compare to the average regular users.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda app-developers app
I'm not talking about little incremental updates. Google should hold manufactures to major version updates for at least 18 months after release. Google stated that it only intends to release one major version a year going forward. So that's one maybe two major updates depending on release date of the device. I don't think that's a lot to ask.

this is where the point is. I'm not saying that anyone should get the updates as rapidly as the nexus does... But i think that 6 months after an update release it's reasonable to believe it should be out for at least a manufacturer's flag ship phone... (and last gen flag ship if still under the 18mo mark)

As I hate it when people make threads that just lead to a link, I'll add a few words of my own.
I'm a little skeptical that this will go the way of the Palm Pre. Be that as it may, you have to consider that Samsung is getting big in the mobile market. They may take the chance to break away from Android and add a new flavor into the mix.
That being said though, does it have to be so........ FUGLY
It looks like every OS out now slapped toge- OH WAIT... I just realized it's some third party Chinese developer made OS. No wonder
I would hate to see the SGSIII go the way of the Samsung Instinct.
LINK
Good quote on the subject:
Seriously Samsung, another iOS clone? Just focus on polishing Android! Android is open source. And that’s not just a marketing move! Open source as in O-P-E-N-S-O-U-R-C-E; as in anyone can take the source code, put their own name onto it and pretend that they made it. There is literally NO reason to develop another operating system. Android is already ahead in number of features, number of apps, and is developed by Google, with top developers and designers from around the world. Samsung, you are a hardware manufacturer. You will never acquire enough talent to compete with Google. Maybe if Google suddenly stopped Android development for two years, Bada or Tizen might catch up. But it won’t.

Lol tizen ? ... Looks like **** !
Looks like Touchwiz. I won't buy a SGSIII if it uses Tizen. I dislike Touchwiz as it is--there's no way that I'm going to buy a phone that looks exactly like it--even if the hardware is great.
I'd rather buy the next iteration of the Nexus series. Heck, if Sprint miraculously gives my city LTE support in the near future, I'd sell my E4GT immediately and buy a Galaxy Nexus. I doubt that'll happen though, as my city doesn't even have Wimax support, so I'd guess my city would be near the bottom of the list for LTE rollout.
I'm not leaving Android, so if Samsung goes to Tizen, I will drop Samsung and pick up another manufacturer.
And I buy a lot of Samsung devices... Moment, Epic 4G, Epic 4G Touch, Galaxy Tab 10.1, etc.

For what its worth.
The Galaxy S series is tied to Android, I doubt Samsung would risk alienating potential repeat customers by switching OS's. Makes little to no sense.
I'm willing to bet this shows up on a low to mid range device first to test the waters and see if consumers buy into it. I'd wager that it wouldn't debut in the US.

They will probably supplant their entry level feature-phones with this. There are still far more feature-phones (read: dumb-phones) on the planet making that a very lucrative market segment to pursue. I'm pretty sure Nokia is still king in that market segment so Samsung could stand to gain quite a bit by offering a relatively feature-rich experience for very little money to those who don't care about buying into an ecosystem (iOS or Android) as much as accessing their services (facebook, twitter, etc) and simply having a phone that works.
Not to mention this device likely would probably be off the radar of the current ****-show of IP warfare ruining this industry right now.

I STILL DON'T HAVE AN ICS UPDATE.
Google really needs to get their crap together. ICS still out and one phone officially has it. Now this is coming and although it's not confirmed, this is still ridiculous. It would be nice to see tablets running the new upcoming OS but where do the phones play a role in this? I thought the OEMs where the reason for fragmentation but it is proving that Google is the kingpin behind all of this.
I love android but I like to be up to date and it's becoming harder and harder as Google gets more and more powerful. We shouldn't have to get a Nexus to be up to date. Fragmentation really needs to be fixed.
It will not be out for like a year.google has not even said it's going to be called jelly bean.

Another reason to only get google phones. The GN will be updated right away, we will have to wait 6+ months.
If history holds true then we won't get it at all. Both the vibrant and the sgs4g only got one official update. If the galaxy s3 and 5.0 get released around the same time I would bet on Sammy not upgrading the s2. Its sad and disrespectful to their fan base but that's how it has been for the tmo galaxy line so far.

If Google is going to spoon feed their number 1 device it should be on all carries under the sun. Well its really easy if your devices and product all run similar hardware. apple iphone and ipod touch all run similar hardware. Drivers are mostly the same with slight changes.
Unless google says only restricts to certain hardware like tegra 2 and tegra 3 for tablets. and what ever processor for phones this won't happen. Essentially google did their job once they released source. It now up to Htc, Samsung , lg, and moto do their job and make new drivers from source.
Also another reason is carriers. The samsung galaxy 2 is the same phone through out europe on different carriers. Htc could of did the same thing with the sensation and use a apq8060 so it could essentially be a a world phone. You could essentially switch out the modem and still use the same processor. This would make it easier for updates. But U.s carriers want to brand them. Put certain restrictions for them. Also add all their bloatware back in.
Google alliance thing was something google promised but in the end they can't make it happen. You can't make carriers update your device. If they dont think its important enough so they can make money off of it then they wont update it.
T-mobile is one of the worst when it comes updating devices. I been on all the other major carriers and i seen even them release even incremental updates for phones that I thought no one uses on other carriers. Tmobile will have their flagship device with bugs for at least 6 months till they decide to update it.

The only thing i dont like about touch wiz is the actual launcher. The rest dont really bother me. Sense 4.0 and ics make me not ever want an htc device again. Blur is just disgusting and all it does is bog the phone down.

This was my point exactly. Google keeps saying one thing and doing another. ICS was supposed to make things uniform and I do remember the talk about slowing down all the theming or skins done by oem's. Doesn't look like anything is slowing down. Manufacturers dropping phones non stop and all the adopters of the product are left with no update. It seems as if as long as Google is getting the advertising money....all the companies can run a muck.
I have to admit the third portion of this is the cell providers just being greedy by not updating and forcing you to want to upgrade.

Sigh. Everyone here keeps thinking Samsung owes us some update or something.
Let me enlighten you on something. They don't. Neither does T-Mobile.
The fact is if you're on this board, you KNOW US-based versions of Samsung phones don't get software updates on time. If you wanted timely updates, you should have gotten a full priced I9100 to use. It's like the Galaxy Nexus vs the Galaxy S2. People bought the Nexus for it's dev support.
The I9100 came to the market more than 6 months before this phone. Guess what, it will get an ICS roughly about the same time before we do. This is just how the system works. Petition or no petition it ain't changing. We will have ICS eventually. Just not in March, or April. If we don't have it by October, then we can consider silly petitions again.

When you buy any product you are not owed a update. Tmobile could of said wifi calling is an update. This is all what you will get. Google promises nexus updates so they do gets updates. Untill they can or feel like they do not want to support it anymore. It may be bad business but its how it works. When you buy a device you are not guranateed anything. Except that it functions how it suppose to.

your logic is flawed. Did you sign something saying that Samsung would indeed give you an update. You spent 660 on the phone as is. Updates not included and with the understanding thereafter. If you buy aNY electronics nowadays you are prettyicy guaranteed that it will get outdated by newer versions of the same model or.updates that never get to.you. that is the world today. If you feel you are owed something then call Samsung or your carrier yourself . Even better yet, visit their corporate office and state your claims. Silly people.

As per the Telus website it says Android 4.0 - Available in 2012.
http://www.telusmobility.com/en/MB/samsung_galaxy_s_II_x/index.shtml
It doesn't say exactly when it will be available, just that it will be available in 2012.
I have also sent Telus Support messages via Twitter early February asking about Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S 2 and this is the response I received from the Telus rep:
We are working with Samsung to bring this update for spring 2012.
I also asked if the update would be pushed to our phones and his response was:
There is nothing official on the method yet, but typically you would use Kies software for the update.
Take all this with a grain of salt, those are just the responses I received. Either way, it will be sometime in 2012.

I spent $1100 on my laptop last March. Guess who isn't getting Windows 8 for free? I've never understood why people complain about this. You want free updates? Buy an Apple product. Talk bad about Apple all you want but they update iOS frequently. And every new OS they put out is free.
Didn't see a thread for this so here you go.

Does it really matter when samsux releases the update. T mobile still has to push it. And dancing on the broken record line, as long as people selling new phones control the updates..........
Master blaster still runs Bartertown

Sigh, still kind of vague. I'm waiting for the push backs of December then they will say early 2014. Feels bad man.
Just smoke signals. It is getting old to be left behind on updates with new phones. Time for carriers to focus more on updates rather than sales.

While I tend to agree,
Updates don't make money for carriers, phone sales do. Why would they change that dynamic?

Maybe it's just this will be the third time I have gone through this. First with the behold 2, was promised to us that we would get froyo, which never happened. Second with vibrant, which was promised gingerbread, which also never happened. After that I went through nexus s, nexus s4g then galaxy nexus. Gnex was a bad daddy phone that still can hang with the newest. I was on the fence whether to get nexus 4(which my wife has) or the note. I decided that the screen and pen were more important to me then having newest software. I knew 100% what I was getting into. In the past I have complained to tmobile, signed petitions, complained to samsux, with null results. You may call me a corporate sheep, while I call myself an educated consumer.

Although Samsung is grosley behind the Nexus line up. To be fair Samsung probably has the best track record in terms of updates. The GS2 is still being supported and rumored to get 4.3. And T-Mobile ain't bad seems like we get updates faster than the other US carriers. Although I am using At&t note on T-Mo. Who cares I am sure I will get 4.3 long before official update from any carrier.

one scenario would be once samsung releases the final build -- cyanogenmod gets ahold of it and and puts together a tmobile port for it -- and they start charging for roms maybe. they are in business now to make money and their stable roms tend to be just that.. i'd pay a reasonable amount for a stable rom with all the bells and whistles. I said CM since they went public as a corp- other modders have great roms too

Doubt cm will port an OEM ROM, and especially now that they are technically a OEM. Their goal is to sell the cm experience. Now that they are a corporate they are now for profit. Now no one knows exactly how they are going to acneive that goal. Ads, teaming up with an OEM like Google does with lg and has done with Samsung and HTC. Maybe they will have their own app store. Maybe charge for the installer. Who knows

Some what good news, there is a 4.3 leak for att note 2. No root method yet. I definitely don't recommended flashing if Cuz it will have ARF modem. I plan to flash soon. I have unlocked att note. Pretty sure if a leak doesn't come out there will be flashable zips soon which will make its way to T-Mobile

And then the US carriers have to test and bloat it...so we are looking March next year!!!!
I am buying the next Nexus and noting but Nexus from now on.

Agreed. Goodbye Samsung. It's pathetic that its going to 2014 before a phone released in October 2012 gets a software update. You've lost me as well.

More like January or Feb, I'd say or maybe never...at least for the Sprint variant. It isn't in Sprint's interest to push updates unless the other carriers do. Of course Samsung wants to get these updates moving because they want the public to feel they'll be supported if they purchase a Samsung branded device but brand loyalty isn't in Sprints interests unless the brand is Sprint and that of course is usually maintained at the end of a very thin thread as it is.
As for the possibility of receiving the 4.3 update. I'm always excited about OTA updates because updates play a fairly big role in future versions of Android. The more updates there are the more well understood it is what the public wants/needs from future versions because of the broader spectrum of users providing feedback.
For my own personal device...I don't care. I run what I want on my device anyway regardless of whatever Samsung/Sprint/Google push. I don't give a rats ass about having a "pure" Android experience or being the first to get the latest version (no offense to the Nexus fans) either. I want my device dirty and nasty with a big moustache. I don't want be like one of those creeps that hangs around the strip clubs but never pays for a lap dance...I'm in the champaign room and let me tell you there is more going on in there than the song says. Why do you think I'm hanging around here? Trick it, brick it, fix it, trick it and brick it again...that's what it all about.

a million times, this.. love the removable battery and storage but not sure if it's worth the [email protected]!%
Yea don't really care because Google separated their core services from the operating system so most of the really great feature are now pushed through Google rather than being a part of a new os version.
Android updates aren't as feature rich anymore.

To the ones complaining who are you going to then? Unless its a Google phone it will be the same across all manufacturers. At least we have a date. Samsung actually announces all devices that will be upgraded at the same time unlike others like HTC who just tells u that their it phone of the moment will be upgraded while the rest get lost in forgotten land. Samsung actually has been the best non Google manufacturer with updates to their Galaxy line..

Pretty sure that you're missing the point.
The updates that we all are anxious for are system updates that ROM devs can work with, make better ROMs for us all. Definitely worth "complaining" about.
That other thread is about a fault where the phone thinks it needs a software update, but not really, or the update in question is actually not desirable for whatever reason.
Welcome to XDA.

I've been thinking long n hard about that, as an option. I do love my Note2, with the exception of the plastic, it's a badass device. But I don't actually use the pen as much as I thought I would. So taking a long look at the HTC Mega (?), and hoping that it makes it to the US... I allow myself a new phone every year, it being a hobby I indulge myself in, and I always buy outright, no ETF charges...
