Sign Petition to Samsung for Android 4.0 - T-Mobile Samsung Galaxy S II SGH-T989

Are you tired of Tmobile and Samsung keeping customers in the dark? We haven't even gotten so much as a date to bring ICS to our phones.
If your frustrated and feel we deserve more sign my petition.
I want two things from Samsung & Tmobile:
An android 4.0/iCS rom
A realistic date for getting this to customers
http://www.thepetitionsite.com/226/158/957/bring-android-4-to-tmobile-samsung-galaxy-s-ii-sgh-t989/

We should include skyrocket and the Telus t989d that way we have more signatures. All the same hardware.

Ill definately sign if we get the other two models in the claim
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda premium

this kind of stuff is a joke
look at what happened with the G2x ... they threatened legal action.. and LG released a half assed gingerbread rom that was running a froyo kernel and was worse than the froyo rom
just let them do their thing and quit your crying and you will get a better product

Signed....tired of being black sheep of the s2's

Add 727r's and I'm in
Non-bricked Skyrocket since 2-11-2012

Added, it is crazy that they are not properly supporting these phones. Feel like a second class citizen.

edit: didn't realize the release is only for international version..

Sigh. Everyone here keeps thinking Samsung owes us some update or something.
Let me enlighten you on something. They don't. Neither does T-Mobile.
The fact is if you're on this board, you KNOW US-based versions of Samsung phones don't get software updates on time. If you wanted timely updates, you should have gotten a full priced I9100 to use. It's like the Galaxy Nexus vs the Galaxy S2. People bought the Nexus for it's dev support.
The I9100 came to the market more than 6 months before this phone. Guess what, it will get an ICS roughly about the same time before we do. This is just how the system works. Petition or no petition it ain't changing. We will have ICS eventually. Just not in March, or April. If we don't have it by October, then we can consider silly petitions again.

Samsung vibrant, anyone?

When you buy any product you are not owed a update. Tmobile could of said wifi calling is an update. This is all what you will get. Google promises nexus updates so they do gets updates. Untill they can or feel like they do not want to support it anymore. It may be bad business but its how it works. When you buy a device you are not guranateed anything. Except that it functions how it suppose to.

your logic is flawed. Did you sign something saying that Samsung would indeed give you an update. You spent 660 on the phone as is. Updates not included and with the understanding thereafter. If you buy aNY electronics nowadays you are prettyicy guaranteed that it will get outdated by newer versions of the same model or.updates that never get to.you. that is the world today. If you feel you are owed something then call Samsung or your carrier yourself . Even better yet, visit their corporate office and state your claims. Silly people.

As per the Telus website it says Android 4.0 - Available in 2012.
http://www.telusmobility.com/en/MB/samsung_galaxy_s_II_x/index.shtml
It doesn't say exactly when it will be available, just that it will be available in 2012.
I have also sent Telus Support messages via Twitter early February asking about Android 4.0 for the Galaxy S 2 and this is the response I received from the Telus rep:
We are working with Samsung to bring this update for spring 2012.
I also asked if the update would be pushed to our phones and his response was:
There is nothing official on the method yet, but typically you would use Kies software for the update.
Take all this with a grain of salt, those are just the responses I received. Either way, it will be sometime in 2012.

I spent $1100 on my laptop last March. Guess who isn't getting Windows 8 for free? I've never understood why people complain about this. You want free updates? Buy an Apple product. Talk bad about Apple all you want but they update iOS frequently. And every new OS they put out is free.

Ics coming next month?

Yesterday, during an Android gathering in LA, LA Gadgets Examiner confirmed with an Android insider that Google, HTC
and Samsung are doing everything they can to bring Android 4.0 to their smartphones. The EVO 3D and Galaxy S II were
specifically mentioned as scheduled to receive the update sometime next month.<===from talkandroid

It may be released next month by Google. But the US carriers are going to take a couple months to get them to us, the consumer.
For example, Samsung already gave Sprint the update for our phones beginning of October, but we won't be getting it until December.

I bet if that update was for the IPhone Sprint would have rolled it out already and wasted no time in supporting it.
Now I am talking about Apple updates here not Samsung. Just saying that if Sprint would have gotten a update from Apple the Apple users would have gotten it already. Unlike all the other users who has to wait and wait and be treated like a red headed step child.

The difference is that Apple sends updates directly. Samsung goes through Sprint. Sprint doesn't have much of a say as to when an Apple update gets released.

You never know, it could be ICS. The Galaxy Nexus has ICS and it's Samsung. It's not too far fetched to say that Samsung has an ICS build for our phone already.
..... Even if they said next month expect it 2013 ... This is samsung.

That was also before they made the promise to deliver the updates to devices that can get them in a reasonable time.
The moment got 3 or 4 updates in it's lifespan. It actually had 2.1 before the Hero.
The Epic got boofed sure, but still, I think this one will be different, and I think the Epic is the reason they didn't go with a whole new form factor.
Hopefully Samsung will follow HTC's lead. HTC announced 8 devices today that will be getting ICS in early 2012. 2 Sprint phones are on that list. http://tinyw.in/Fw1H

Contacted T-Mobile today on blurry MMS photos--ICS coming within a month

This is what T-Mobile estimates. They say ICS is rolling out currently in the UK on GS2 devices and he expects it to roll out within a month on our devices. He said this will include the blurry MMS fix.
This is fantastic news. I can't wait to get some stock ICS roms
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
Unless your speaking to someone in charge of the updates T-Mobile has no idea when ICS will be deployed for the GS2. The sensation ics has already been out for a while yet they still haven't pushed out and last info we had was that it would be going into testing soon as well as the amaze that was over a month ago. I highly doubt the t989 will see ics soon officially.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using Tapatalk 2 Beta-4

For what its worth and I have no reason to lie
For what its worth my friend works at tmobile and they had a meeting about ICS "lol" and said that ota's would be rolling out at the end of April. And that is what the reps are to tell the customers. Maybe we will get a leak he also said that Samsung had released it months ago for our phones. I guess t-mobile is just bloating the crap out of it.

Interesting, yet part of me wouldn't be surprised if T-mobile didn't release it until next year, we may even get the 2.3.6 ICS update from them. I'm no longer interested in the anticipation, we should all focus on SR ports.

T-Mobile Developer I know..., it was suppose to come in may but since the T-Mobile apps isn't working they not releasing it til the T-Mobile apps work correctly because Samsung has a contract to fulfill with T-Mobile apps. Til they get it to work on the T-Mobile SII no ICS.
Deeerrrppp
Not to be the "I know a guy" -guy. but "I know a guy" an Sammy Regional Sales Exec. -in the U.S. mind you, they are shooting for mid-month April and expected to have it released for sure by the end of 3rd/4th week (T989 Hercules) at the very latest. I don't care what you believe, just think all you people need something else to do, all ICS rumor guys out there. They are still only a couple weeks behind their scheduled goal they had stated in November, pretty standard. And hit the Q1 goal for a bunch of S2 handsets... Truth also is they didn't even start adjusting their goal of releasing the Galaxy 3 at the end of April until this week, which means that will be out in the next 6 or so weeks too. about a month after we get our update and about a month + before the iphone 5 release. If you think I'm crazy show me your DERP face and we'll talk again in a month so I can send you one back, and sales works on different floor, basically different world from the developers so I've got no info on why the ICS hasn't been finished yet? and carrier reps (T-Mobile) are the last to hear anything for obvious reasons so figure that one out too...duuurrrr

Could Samsung Just Leak Source?

Samsung has already flexed its muscles by dictating to the US carriers what the GS3 will look like and be named. Despite this, Sprint seems to be calling the shots with this Epic Touch ICS update right now by holding it back for the GS3 launch.
It is pretty clear (to me at least) that FF18 will be the OTA release for ICS. I think at this point Samsung should basically just give the finger to Sprint and "accidentally" leak the source for FF18 for the Epic Touch.
I mean really, what do they have to lose?
Its all about the Benjamins you know the motto.... If they leak the upgrade now you may or may not want to get the GS3 but if they hold off and the GS3 is your only way of getting ICS then hmmmmmmm...
Let the GS3 hit the streets for a week or two and they get their initial money and then they will probably give us our upgrade to ICS. You know how it is, just like record sales or movie sales the first week is usually the big one.
Bottom line I think its all about how to generate the most revenue out of this
You dont bite the hand that feeds you
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
Sprint is doing the same thing to the Evo 3D users too, hold off on the update & sell as many Evo LTE's & GS3's as possible, I don't like it either, but its business. I'm just hoping that Samsung will release source early like they did for Gingerbread on the Epic last November, we had source almost 3 weeks before Sprint pushed the update.
Sent from my CM9 powered E4GT using Tapatalk 2
Why would Sprint drop ICS on the S2 before the S3 with ICS hits the shelves? Thats the dumbest business move ever. Of course they are gonna wait a bit for the S3 to generate some cash then when they feel they have pulled enough subscribers, theyll give the older ones their treat. Yeah Sammy could screw Sprint over and leak the source but that would not make Mr. Hesse happy and Sammy doesnt wanna do that. Like edlivian said Sprint brings Sammy a decent piece of the pie. Why would they intentionally burn that bridge?
Sent from my SPH-D710 using xda premium
Thank you! I guess I'm not the only one that understands business. Someone said the same thing last week here in general and i told them damn near the same thing you just did.
Sent from my SPH-D710 using Tapatalk 2
I'm not interested in them releasing the OTA before the GS3 has its turn in the sun, guys, just source. Most people don't know what to do with source anyway so how can it hurt?
I might be mistaken on this but there is another legal aspect:
GPL was mentioned on another thread regarding the eMMC fix that stated it would violate GPL to release source if the official release did not match. Since no official confirmation has come from Sprint that FF18 is the OTA I don't think they can legally do it until that is given to them.
Oddly enough the i777 source hasn't dropped either so it also might be that they're holding back until a solution for the eMMC lockup is both in agreement, developed and passed to carriers. That is purely speculative though as follow-up inquires to OSRC, Mr. Sumrall and Samsung R&D have so far been unanswered.
I understand they want to make money but hasn't this phone not even been out a year yet? I don't know about everyone else but really, who the hell can upgrade to the gsIII or evo lte without going off contract and paying full price?? U guys make no sense. It's not time for our upgrade yet!

ya seriously.. i for one if get the sgs3 it will be with verizon.. screw sprints network where i live.. if we even have service its crap and no know date for lte at all in site. most likely after 2014.. theyve been teasing us with leaks as long as the phones been out almost and have other phones such as the g nexus that have ics already so not like the sgs3 is the only one sprint has with ics.. if people are going to get a new phone they will. they need to stop playing with there customers who are anxiously waiting because the longer they wait the more frustrated we get.. if its about business give us what we want! competition is tough these days and business in the cell phone industry you have to maintain the customers u have now.. since almost everyone has a cell already, you must take customers from other carriers.. if we dont have sgs2 source yet and other carriers do, whos to say someone wont go to a competitor with a better network and buy a used sgs2 with source for ics and get the sgs3 upgrade? better business sprint?? not necessarily, but frustrating to the sgs2 owners who have been teased with multiple leaks and speculation and arent even ready to upgrade to the sgs3 yet. what do we get? the short end of the stick! stop worrying about new revenue and focus on the customers and network you currently have! if not you will lose customers to the competition who have better network, give us source, and have the same devices available

If u have bad service where u live well that just sucks. But as much as we hate to admit it Sprint really does have the best plans for the price I think. I get pretty decent service where I live. Never had wimax and definitely will never see lte but that's ok. I'm probably not alone on not seeing lte. Unlimited 3g is still nice though. I just don't see how people justify them not giving us source because of the gsIII. I don't know about u but I don't have 600 bucks to throw away when I haven't even had this phone for a year yet.

exactly lol.. my point is also in retaining its current customers.. yes we have unltd data which is nice.. and seems like were in the same boat! but sprint is delaying our ics source because of the sgs3.. way to treat your loyal customers who bought the sgs2 last year.. i bet the ppl with sgs3 wont get jelly bean for a while until sprint releases there first phone with jelly bean lol.. we will be left to using ports and custom roms which in my opinion are better than anything sprint can throw at us.. they should give us what we want, and will still generate revenue from new sgs3 owners at the same time.. and lte will attract new customers however late sprint is jumping on that ship.. but what about us? that was my point lol

yeah im not sure why so many people are complaining. If u want the official ICS that badly go blow ur money on the GS3 a year after u bought the GS2. Otherwise you have to wait just like everyone else. Don't expect the newest technology to just be handed to u on a silver platter just cuz you own an earlier version of it. Sprint doesn't owe you a thing. No where in your contract with them does it state that they "owe" you and OS upgrade in x amount of time. They do OTA upgrades as a courtesy when it makes sense to them. They are in the business to take customers away from other carriers and keep their current ones mostly satisfied on the side. If that's not enough then thats the beauty of capitalism. Find another carrier and pay more. You can't have it all.

Well like I already said I'm happy with Sprint. They have good price for their plans which r Truly unlimited. And I'm running ics right now so it's all good. Source would make it that much better though. GsIII probably would be a good upgrade I'm just not eligible right now like most. And from what some people with that device have said they aren't that impressed anyway.

AS a user and developer for the andriod device and google has announce that it won't update the s3 on U.S variant because it has a duo core chip ...and to tell you the truth I think it's bullocks , now how come apple update there software for their phones and I'm talking about 3GS til iphone 5 this what lack in andriod , I understand companies want to sell there " new blah blah phone, but its all about marketing... i am really disappointed with the news but if you dont believe me take a look at the link http://legalpronews.findlaw.com/article/0ghn3QJeCYajg?q=Android
it would be samsungs choice not googles...
1. Samsung and each of the US carriers, NOT Google provide the updates to the GSIII.
2. Google only provides updates to the Nexus line.
3. That is the same type of speculative / rumor stuff that came out about the single-core devices when ICS and JB both came out, just like the pre-release rumor about GB when it came out... no phones under either 756 MB or 1GB of RAM and/or under 4 inch screen would be able to run it. my wife's and my daughter's MT3G-S's both ran it just fine with only 600 MHz and 512 MB of RAM.
simply put just the same old b.s. rumors flying around before Google themselves have even unveiled the new OS... it's just some blogger shooting off their mouth trying to get people to jump to the "new hotness" so they don't get left behind.
Samsung nor Google nor the carriers "NEED" do nothing..
While it's true that there are those phone users, such as ourselves, that are tech savvy and want the latest software refresh, look at the shear number of shipped phones! Far in excess of all the registered users on any tech forum added all together.
This means that the average S3 owner only cares that the phone does exactly what was advertised at the time of their purchase and remains stable in operation. S3 has already achieved this, so the "need" is not there. Tens of millions of S3 owners will continue on unaware or even care about that "update".
Now you could argue that we "want" the updates, especially 4.2.2 with premium suite and also Key Lime Pie (5.0). But that argument needs to include how this is financially "beneficial" to Samsung and the carriers that sell their phones.
I agree, I really, really, really want Key Lime Pie along with new S4 type features in the premium suite. Please, pretty please give it to me. I'll then show off this capability and how you care for your customers Samsung. Perhaps enough new purchases of even the older S3 will occur to cover the cost of the new development/testing? So please?
But to demand it as a NEED, meh!
Besides, anything that happens on another Galaxy variant is normally ported to other variants. Like Verizon base sporting multi window.

Guess it's Samsung's way of forcing you to buy up...I wont upgrade for that, I'll just stick to custom ROMS till my upgrade is due, then getting that Note III!

Yep, that'll punish good ole Samsung :cyclops:
Well Supposely samsung will update to 4.2.2 with some of the features of the s4 in May or June. I seriously doubt that as I imagine samsung will think it will hurt sales of the s4, a newer phone with the same firmware of the s3. A. It might come late summer or more waiting, at this point they should just stop 4.1.2

At the same time it may give a Samsung a bad reputation. Especially since they are really competing against Apple they don't have to do anything but it would be in their best interest to do so.

I thought that in order to brand their devices as Google devices (has stock play store access), manufactures have to keep their devices up to date for at least 18 months from the date of release?
If that's true then we should get updates until at least November 2013.

I was thinking of the android update alliance. Apparently it was non binding so there was literally nothing forcing the manufacturers to keep their word.

If this was true Android would be the #1 OS no debate

It's not like these manufacturers aren't making loot on android. Google should put the screws to them and hold them to the update alliance agreement or pull their Google device status. Uphold the quality of the platform or lose play store (all gapps for that matter). Think the s3 would be so wildly popular with no gapps? Plain and simple, if they want to make money on android, they should be held to its release schedule.

I don't think Google cares as much how slow these other manufacturers are delivering updates. If they did they would stop releasing little updates every few months and just prep a big one for phones to catch up, and frankly they do sell phones. Their selling point with the nexus devices is you buy a nexus and you'll get all the goodies earlier than everyone else. Bottom line though most consumers don't care about updates I know several people with phones like the blaze still on GB and think is the best thing ever. We are a small community compare to the average regular users.

I'm not talking about little incremental updates. Google should hold manufactures to major version updates for at least 18 months after release. Google stated that it only intends to release one major version a year going forward. So that's one maybe two major updates depending on release date of the device. I don't think that's a lot to ask.

this is where the point is. I'm not saying that anyone should get the updates as rapidly as the nexus does... But i think that 6 months after an update release it's reasonable to believe it should be out for at least a manufacturer's flag ship phone... (and last gen flag ship if still under the 18mo mark)

I am done with Samsung...they say October. .but really mean December.
And then the US carriers have to test and bloat it...so we are looking March next year!!!!
I am buying the next Nexus and noting but Nexus from now on.

Agreed. Goodbye Samsung. It's pathetic that its going to 2014 before a phone released in October 2012 gets a software update. You've lost me as well.

More like January or Feb, I'd say or maybe never...at least for the Sprint variant. It isn't in Sprint's interest to push updates unless the other carriers do. Of course Samsung wants to get these updates moving because they want the public to feel they'll be supported if they purchase a Samsung branded device but brand loyalty isn't in Sprints interests unless the brand is Sprint and that of course is usually maintained at the end of a very thin thread as it is.
As for the possibility of receiving the 4.3 update. I'm always excited about OTA updates because updates play a fairly big role in future versions of Android. The more updates there are the more well understood it is what the public wants/needs from future versions because of the broader spectrum of users providing feedback.
For my own personal device...I don't care. I run what I want on my device anyway regardless of whatever Samsung/Sprint/Google push. I don't give a rats ass about having a "pure" Android experience or being the first to get the latest version (no offense to the Nexus fans) either. I want my device dirty and nasty with a big moustache. I don't want be like one of those creeps that hangs around the strip clubs but never pays for a lap dance...I'm in the champaign room and let me tell you there is more going on in there than the song says. Why do you think I'm hanging around here? Trick it, brick it, fix it, trick it and brick it again...that's what it all about.

a million times, this.. love the removable battery and storage but not sure if it's worth the [email protected]!%
Yea don't really care because Google separated their core services from the operating system so most of the really great feature are now pushed through Google rather than being a part of a new os version.
Android updates aren't as feature rich anymore.

To the ones complaining who are you going to then? Unless its a Google phone it will be the same across all manufacturers. At least we have a date. Samsung actually announces all devices that will be upgraded at the same time unlike others like HTC who just tells u that their it phone of the moment will be upgraded while the rest get lost in forgotten land. Samsung actually has been the best non Google manufacturer with updates to their Galaxy line..

I love how in this thread it's bunch of people complaining about how updates don't come fast enough and then when you look at the next thread in this section it's all about getting rid of the updater to stop those "pesky" notifications trying to get you to update... lol
They say December, but that's when they're submitting it to sprint. We'll actually get it Feb or Mar in 2014. Mark my words lol.

Pretty sure that you're missing the point.
The updates that we all are anxious for are system updates that ROM devs can work with, make better ROMs for us all. Definitely worth "complaining" about.
That other thread is about a fault where the phone thinks it needs a software update, but not really, or the update in question is actually not desirable for whatever reason.
Welcome to XDA.

I've been thinking long n hard about that, as an option. I do love my Note2, with the exception of the plastic, it's a badass device. But I don't actually use the pen as much as I thought I would. So taking a long look at the HTC Mega (?), and hoping that it makes it to the US... I allow myself a new phone every year, it being a hobby I indulge myself in, and I always buy outright, no ETF charges...
