Sudden death - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

My galaxy note 2 died. I live in finland and the phone is an international one so, the place i sent it for warranty refused to fix it saying they have no parts. I thought it could be brought back to life without any neccessity 2 change much.
So my question anyone able to tinker with the phone and been able 2 bring it back at least to power up......
Should i heat it, boil it, or measure something with a multimeter..................
The phone just flashes a red light on the led light at the top.

It's an sds issue. Nothing can be done except changing the motherboard.

I don't know the customer rights in your country. But I don't think they have rights to refuse fixing your device due to lack of spare parts. Sounds ridiculous. In worst case they have to pay your money back.
I suggest you to contact Samsung directly.

Finland is part of the EU, therefore EU regulations on warranties apply. They are legally required to fix your device, at no cost to you. Not having parts is neither your problem, or relevant.

you can vote here for SDS issue

I hear u OP. I'm facing the same issue now, being kicked back and forth between Samsung USA and Samsung UK (if I should actually use SamUK for repair, im not sure)... I am kind of desperate at this point as I feel like going nowhere to fix this damn phone. I'm gonna fix it and just get rid of it. I officially hate it now.
If I understood you correctly, you imported the phone from outside the Finland? Where was the origin of sales ?

Possible sds

Hello
5 month Note 2 user that had almost no complaints till early april where my phone started lagging, restarting every few hours(it did restart once every 2-3 days since they day i bought it) and touch screen not being responsive. Result was the problem becoming worse and me having to search for it and finding out about SDS. I checked my phone through EMMC and it says my chip is insane... as soon as I saw that I tried backing everything up but as it turned out, it was too late..I've lost all my game data (I've managed to copy a few games but its a few stages back..for example my subway surfers save is like 2-3 months back...), i've lost ALL of my contacts and my smscontact backup says it has no contacts on the backupfile...
regardless, I sent it to the local Samsung retail and they kept it for a week, got it back today, same thing happening...They told me they found humidity + errors on my phone and they had to clear/wipe it out completely. Its been like 3-4 hours since i got it and it already got stuck at a black home screen error + unable to swap applications and once on a non-responsive touch screen. I contacted the Samsung retailer and he told me that it could be an error from my SD card. I highly doubt that, am using a san disk 32gb ultra speed and I only have movies on it actually so...
Now my 'questions'...What can I do? Rooting it can fix it? Or will it void my warranty completely? If I root and it breaks again can I unroot and send it to have it fixed? And if they cant fix it, do they replace my phone with another one? Like a new note 2 or a new samsung phone?
Thanks
Ps: already posted this on sprint forums by mistake and it was suggested to me to try removing my sd card..no difference

well it is what people say "symptoms of the sudden death" so probably and all says that( 5 months, strange behaviour. .) if they dont fix you can talk to them that probably it is SDS if not you'll have to wait until the phone dies or send lots of times (like a guy who said that here in xda) and they probably replace the motherboard. theres nothing at the moment to do if it have been affected by the corrupted data but you can update to the latest firmware which is suposed to have the fix
hope I answered your question

Was the 5 months too late for it to take effect?i already called them and they told me that they know nothing about the SDS.. they said they can only change my phones internal/motherboard (as they said "just the plaque not ur device"
Latest update is 4.1.2? Thats what i have.. they gave me the option of buying another phone..should i? Am afraid of getting another sds affected note

well the problem is that if the phone send some corrupted data to the chip when you were at 4.1.1 there's nothing to do.
The repair centre "doesn't know about it" because if they do know they'll have to asume that problem and they will lose money. The correct procediment is to change de motherboard however sometimes they just put an old one with the insane chip again. If you really want this phone and I assume that you do like it, when they replace and send it back update to 4.1.2 ASAP therefore they usually update before sending back.

They are already losing money when they fix my phone cause of full warranty.. i loved the phone but am disappointed right now and with the possibility of changing phones i dont mind..cause all in all it has its downsides..ie too big to carry, takes a looong time to charge and regardless ive already lost all my data so its already like i got a new phone..
How can i know if they changed my motherboard?
Sent from my GT-N7100 using xda premium
You should have a new imei if they changed mb i think.
I bought note because of the screen, dont mind using it with both hands thats the price you have to pay if you want that commodity of big display.
And its charging like every phone, maybe a little longer but instead you have great battery life.

I did buy it too but any below 1.5A charger charges too slowly..and the size does matter for me cause am currently serving the army and its harder for me to handle...

I use original charger at home and 2.1a car charger and it charges really fast.
You should maybe check out xperia z,it has ip57 certificate,it is lot tougher than note and a bit smaller.

Nobody loses money but Samsung. Your local samsung service center is not Samsung company. They are third companies that have an agreement with Samsung to fix samsung phones officially in your country.
They lose money only if they replace a motherboard that is already working or not covered under warranty (user faults).
Once I talked(personally) to one of Samsung services in my country, they said mostly they are not able to understand these new generation smartphones. Most of the time all they do is just replacing motherboards, they said
My suggestion to you, print several sudden death syndrome reported web pages and show them or email them if you can. Samsung is replacing bricked motherboards with no question asked (even rooted ones).
Media volume bar is disabled now...

S3 won't charge and turn on

My friend has an att s3 that doesn't turn on and charge. When I plug it in without the battery the red light comes on. On the other hand when I plug it in the charger with the battery the red light doesn't come on. The phone is in complete stock so not rooted at all. Do you guys think this is a battery issue or something else?
Btw I already googled this for a while and people are saying different things. So I had to post this here on xda.
Thanks in advance for you guys' response.
Update: my friend tried a new battery but didn't work either.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
take it to the carrier's service center. if it has not been rooted at all, there should be no problem. they can see if it's the battery or the device. either way, it'll get taken care of.
I forgot to mention this but she won the phone on a Samsung event so I'm guessing there's no warranty on it. She was using the phone on tmobile btw since it was unlocked but had the att logo on it.
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda premium
Could be a battery issue too. Try using a different battery.
She said she tried a new battery but still didn't work. I really find it weird that the red led lights up with out the battery but not with it when plugged on the charger.

she needs to get a hold of samsung support for service and/or warranty details. there is a 1-year manufacturers warranty on these devices.

+1 Try checking with Samsung. Look up on Samsung site. Based on IMEI, they should be able to make out its manufacture date, if not sale date. Plus, its been less than an year since device release date. So you should be covered here.

A short battery or a damaged battery could block the charging and not get the light on. But since using a different battery too didn't help, it might not be the case. Look at battery connectors. Try using air blow on it and check if there any particle shorting them. Try using an alcohol swab and wiping connectors.

I had a feeling that it was the battery until she told me that she already tried changing it. Hopefully Samsung would still take it even without proof of purchase. Otherwise I would have to take our apart myself.

Samsung warranty headache

This is just as a warning to anyone looking to try out Samsung. They do not stand by their warranty or product. My s3 stopped charging or transferring files. I sent it in. It was about six months after purchase. They sent the phone back unrepaired claiming the phone was beyond economical repair. I called in saying they should either send me a refurbished phone or repair mine as stated in the warranty. They said that a piece of my motherboard was damaged and it couldn't be repaired. So I requested a refurbed phone as my s3 should be covered by warranty. At first they tried claiming my warranty isn't covered because of water damage but I proved neither water damage indicator went off. Then they tried to say my phone was out of warranty. Even though I had a proof of purchase of October 2012. Finally they resorted to simply saying I must have opened the phone and broke it myself. Samsung did everything they could to skirt around their warranty obligations. And in the end left me with a six month old broken product that I paid $500+ dollars for and is now practically useless.

Did you take it into Sprint or is this even Sprint GS3 related?
I've had them have to replace the entire board, certainly that's more expensive than an charging port
I've sent multiple phones to them for varying problems, and its always been honored.

I concur with this . Mine started cracking at the bezel for no reason! My phone was babied in a case and never dropped. They wanted me to pay a 70 dollar fee. In was seriously pissed. I only had the phone for 3 months.

They wanted me to take it into sprint to see about getting a replacement. The thing is the phone was just bought outright for the unsubsidized price and flashed so I never even had an account with sprint so sprint wasn't able to do anything, nor should they have, as it was a Samsung warranty not sprint
Sent from my SGH-M919 using xda app-developers app
That may be the case, but if your phone doesn't work, how is Sprint going to charge you $70/month? They have an Interest in you having a working phone.

And that's what sprint should do. Samsung ia complaint is probably based on the fact you did something you not suppose to do with a phone now. Even though it shouldn't have anything to do with your problem.
The thing is if they mess with your phone and then you get it back and have a software issue immediately. Normally you could say samsung messed it up, probably true too. But since you have messed with your software, samsung doesn't want to be liable if something like that happens.
Basically YOU voided the warranty when you flashed a sprint phone to another carrier.

Phone won't turn on

Hi my sisters s3 won't turn ln . she said it charged and the. She tried charging it and it never charged or responded to buttons so she thought it was a bad plug.its been days since then and nothing only thing I can do is plug it in without a battery then the red led.comes up but it can't turn on and I've tried my battery and hers both are good. I'm pretty sure we still have 1 yr warranty from TMobile only thing is the screen is cracked and has been cracked way before the incident. So what should I do thanks and I also couldn't get it into recovery or download mode and also the water sensor stickers are still white so no water damage.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using Tapatalk 2
Im honestly not sure how the screen will affect the chance of a warranty exchange. Was the device ever rooted? Any roms or mods flashed to it? Was it a T999? Your country is listed as Lithuania is why I ask. Also I've heard about a sudden death issue with the international models. (Doesnt affect the T999 though).
Doesn't sound like you have many options available, so you may just want to try sending it in under warranty anyway, and hope for the best.
If it had been rooted and this happened after a flash, it could be bricked due to flashing the wrong devices rom/mod. If this is the case then you'd need a jtag repair. Otherwise, as I stated above, warranty exchange may be your only choice.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
The only effect it'll have it seems they'll say the drop killed the phone instead of it being the dead s3 thing that has been going on with a small amount if S3's. Your only hope is to try and get into download mode (volume down home and power) if that's a no go then its warranty replacement/insurance hopefully. That or purchasing a new phone.

Volume Rocker

Has any one else have this problem..
My volume down button gets stuck into the frame, (must press the button down then up forward into the screen) its really not that big a deal ,Though am just curious of your opinion.
Tomorrow thinking of exchange since am in the 14-day return period.
This might proceed to get worse or what do you think?
I understand dirt can build up and this may cause an issue.
well.. thanks. anyone else with this similar experience?
Hey guys quick question. I bought my HTC One from a "premium retailer" at BJS was wandering if anyone knows if i call verizon customer support if they would send me a new one? Currently its too late to call them,
aswell.. an official verizon store said (when i went earlier) they cannot exchange for it is a different retailer.

as long as you pay for the insurance/ warranty package it won't matter.
I have the warranty 'will give them a call early this morning.
Thank you
So i called verizon this morning amd they weren't' able to send me a replacement, I ended up going to the store and they replaced it with no pleasure at all saying nothing was wrong with it
Anyways i got my new set and before i set it up i checked it carefully and what i saw was uptop there was a much longer gap which ive seen on these fourms and thats pretty normal, was more concerned on the volume button.
Anyhow since i got the replacement it seems more slow and jittery (owell) and now ive noticed .. if you would check the pic.. anyone else have this? its hidden light bleed can only see on a deep slant
doubt my last device had this issue but curious how common this hidden error is.
EDIT:: feel like i got the prototype
this screen issue was bothering me and now they are sending me another

I work at a premium and if you have an issue with your phone we swap it out and we get our money back from where we get our phones. we get our phones from hundreds of different online retailers including Verizon direct. the faster we get rid of our phones the better and there is a period where we can return it and get a refund. depending on the vendor there is different time periods we even mark them from the date we get them and that's what we sell first. This phone has not been out that long and that retailer blows for giving you an issue 4g would never do that. Returning is all together is another issue restocking fees apply even at Verizon direct.

they had none in stock so they are sending me one through mail, idk if its straight from official verizion or what but they say it may be used or new (depending on stock)

seems the more legit looking the place is ,the better.

exactly. Imagine if people could swap out their cars for any perceived flaws. These things are made in a factory run through an assembly line. Some variance is considered normal. There is no such thing as a perfect electronic device.

noway
sending anything in for repair
well ive received the replacement and although everything seems fine like there is no bleed anywhere, but has more gap upto'
seems in good condition, only complain would be that the power button set
is actually flush with the board
pros on replacement : louder/fuller sound -no Ii ght bleed, scrren seems more vivid/pronounced.
cons on replacement - power button and its refurbished phone
pros on original device, reliable
cons on original device, light bleed, alliuminum on left side isnt sunck in
conclusion , not exchanging keeping what i have
