So why does my phone start to lag after a day. No matter what ROM or kernel I am on, after about 20 hours my phone starts to lag. If I restart my phone all is good. Does anyone have an explanation? Is this a great 4.2.2 feature? This wasn't happening before that.

Is that even pure stock? There are several posts on this already. There isn't a genuine solution but some have suggested some ways to minimize lag on 4.2.2.

I have tried all sorts of ROMs.I will look for some of the other posts. Its just frustrating because I can get it to fly, but have to reboot 1-2 times a day.

Check your memory usage. I have this problem too - and it seems like my memory if full. Try to see what services run in the background and maybe you can stop some of them. Also look at 'Greenify' - it is an app that stops background processing for apps you don't want hanging in the background. It requires root, though.
do you use twrp? i had that problem until someone mentioned that twrp doesnt wipe completely and used cmw.

would it be too much of apps running at the background and causing it lag?
I'm reading about this issue more and more everyday ... one solution i saw was that to install "Clean master" from Play store and clear cache with that to minimize lag i believe it only affects custom roms and not stock based roms :/

My phone had been running pretty great for 14 days now without incident (in the past I was getting reboots) but then a few days ago I started getting more and more frequent launcher restarts. I checked running apps and memory was at 120MB. I restarted and with the same exact apps/services running I had 322MB. So the question becomes where the hell did the 200MB go? Seems like a memory leak to me but have no clue what could have caused it. An update can't come soon enough for this otherwise fantastic phone.

just the way it is. I experience the same thing and i show around 130 mb of free ram all the time. I just let the phone do its thing though. I'll reboot once every 2 weeks or so. I dont think your free ram level is abnormal, i see it all the time. Yes a reboot increases it to 300 mb. But it shortly goes back down. I would ignore it.
I will notice that when i get down to around 100 mb free, i'll just go about my browsing or whatever and half hour later it corrected itself showing 190 mb free, all identical apps still running.
Its the mystery of linus. Ram is shared in ways that make it extremely difficult to tally free ram. Thats why i just ignore it. And yes i get launcher closes, along with overly aggressive task killing by the OS. I personally think its a bug google may fix.

Galaxy Nexus keeps apps in memory, it never has 'a lot of free memory' if it has been running for a while. It clears memory when an application needs it and that's it. There's no 'memory leak' of that sort in Android, but there might be something off with one of those applications that might end up hijacking so much memory.
As for launcher restarts, this has never happened to me and I'm thinking that some application, that you have running, causes this.

I don't care how much memory is free. I just can't stand the launcher restarts which are directly related to low memory because the system has to dump the launcher process from ram to make space for other processes. I've seen it on many phones. Apart from the launcher restarts the phone is fine.

Well without reboot most I've had my phone up is 6 days. My free memory was just over 300MB so I'd almost think it's some app you are running too because why am I not seeing any leak? Are you running Nova Prime or just the freebie?
We have had a similar thread before. OP in there was amazed that some of us had 300+mb free and he had 120. Turns out it android 4.0.1 was the culprit. Are you still stock or 4.0.1?

I'm on 4.0.2 stock. My guess is .3 and later fix the issue but I'm too lazy to wipe the phone and flash a rom. I'll have to wait, it just sucks that the update is taking so long to push

In the world of real operating systems, free memory is wasted memory. Why bother releasing memory if there's nothing to replace it with?
If you are low on memory it's a good thing in Android, because that means that many apps are pre loaded in the RAM so they can start quicker.

Thank you. There's a definite memory leak. Its been a day of hard use after reboot but my memory is still at times 300mb free or more. Before I rebooted it never got higher than 120. I'm hoping the app that caused it has been fixed with all the recent updates.

What are you using to see free memory? Its reported differently in different places. Go to settings Apps and Running. What does it say there? I have 300MB but it shows 100 or less in many apps. The number in the place I told you to look is how much memory is usable for user programs since it removes the kernel and running services. THIS number for me was 120MB which means all apps only had 120MB to run that weren't services. So what does yours say?

wow. And no launcher restarts? That's interesting? What rom are you on? I'm stock 4.0.2.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk
The memory is a red herring. If your launcher is restarting frequently there's something going on, but memory may not be a part of it. Perhaps it's a misplaced pointer reference or a widget that's causing the launcher to reload to resync or maybe it really is a memory problem. Either way, focusing on the memory probably won't get you any closer to the root of the issue but uninstalling suspect apps or widgets may.

I've had this phone for 3 weeks now from a vibrant, and so far the battery hasn't balanced itself out. I get maybe a full days use out of it. From what I've read that's pretty good for this phone, but I'd like to be able to get consistent use.
I got a little more curious and decided to install cpu spy and discovered the phone isn't deep sleeping. So my question is, is there an app I should look out for that could possibly be running in the background? I've un installed all bloat that came with the phone, turned off sync, etc.
Any ideas? Or any roms that are touchwiz based that are battery friendly?

You're still on stock, right?
Heck your running processes to see if anything is running that shouldn't be. Also, there is an app called Watchdog (not the data meter) that can be setup to alert you when an all is using more processes than it should be using.

Yeah fully stock before the ota that was sent out.
I have the same apps I had on my vibrant with an extra game or two.
Mainly gapps, dead trigger, light flow, roku, Nike Running, etc.
I read somewhere that light flow was causing issues when the phone was first released, but so far I haven't seen major drain from that app alone. I turned off accessibility in the respect to light flow just to see if maybe that was the issue a d nothing.
Currently it sits right at 384mz. No idea why.

I forgot about that app. Just installed, I'll try this out and see what I can find.
This app should help you determine what exactly is keeping your device awake and preventing deep sleep.
Not sure what it is as this so the first day I have had this issue but it appears my phone has not gone into deep sleep at all today either. Weird.
Sent from my SGH-T999
Hm, just checked my phone, was interested that maybe the app wasn't reading it correctly.
I remember in the Vibrant, some kernels didn't allow apps to read the correct Deep Sleep stats.
Mine is working fine, 84% on deep sleep.
What ROM are you guys running?
I'm on the latest CM10 nightly and lean kernel. Oh well, time to diagnose.

Why does the GN lag so much when installing a app from the playstore?
And can something be done that i can use the device while a app gets installed?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I think it's because Android is just not so optimized, it lags on almost every debice
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
On my stock optimus2x or anfriends note 2 there is not the slightest lag when installing a app.
GN basicly locks up so i doubt its android somehow...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
Because the CPU takes a hit with processing the install (unpacking resources, etc). OMAP CPUs are very open for development/modding compared to other CPUs, but the side effect is they're not quite as powerful due to avoiding some libraries and hardware techniques other CPUs might use that are proprietary in certain cases.

Personally I don't have that problem with my gnex . Its smooth as ever but, I don't leave unused apps using resources like fb or other rogue apps.

so i went back to stock (with the exact same apps as before) and this is a huge difference, no lag at all, no even when installing apps from the playstore. no need for any seeder or lagfix hack to get the device working as it should.
so now the question is wether the lag apears as well after some time or if the lag thing is only present in custom roms. and if so then the question is why.
i will keep my device on stock for some weeks to see how it goes.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
It will almost certainly come back, and it's not only present in custom ROMs. A clean install of a custom ROM should result in the same speed boost as a clean install of a stock ROM. See the following thread:
Nexus Storage Performance Over Time & TRIM
I would also say it depends on what governor and I/O scheduler you use. I would say try the stock settings of interactive and cfq.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
as far as i can remember all custom roms literaly froze when a app was installed. so far i have not seen this on stock and i dont think that is a mather of trim or sheduler/governor.
but i will find out soon enough i guess...
Edit: forgot to ask, you are on a custom rom and your device doesnt freeze while installing apps?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I have tried 3-4 ROMs so far and never faced this problem.
While downloading apps, I can parallely do other tasks, play games, make and receive calls.

I agree. I'm using XENON HD Stable-4.0 Franco kernel r364. Ever since dumping the stock ROM, the Play Store performance is painfully slow. I have 276 apps on my Galaxy Nexus and the Play Store seems to be the only app that impairs the phone's performance so dramatically.
As a previous poster said, a lot has to happen when installing an app. So I tear myself away from my beloved comm dev from a few minutes and do something else. Like relate to my wife

The problem is with the usb connector and not related to the phone software.
You need to take a close look at the usb connector. Take a a small pin or needle and try to push or bend the usb to the orginal position.
TAKE GOOD CARE and do it on your own risk!!!
Yet, it did work for me

Go to Settings > Apps and slide the screen over to "Running" in there you can see what is currently being used by your phone. It will also show you how much RAM is currently being used.
It might also help uninstalling some of the apps you do not use, like facebook, g+ or whatever else is something not in use. Once we get the write privileges fixed you will be able to remove things like HTC Car and other apps that are installed to the system partition but not actually required for the phone to function.
