Why does it lag? - Samsung Galaxy Nexus

Why does the GN lag so much when installing a app from the playstore?
And can something be done that i can use the device while a app gets installed?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I think it's because Android is just not so optimized, it lags on almost every debice
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

On my stock optimus2x or anfriends note 2 there is not the slightest lag when installing a app.
GN basicly locks up so i doubt its android somehow...
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

Because the CPU takes a hit with processing the install (unpacking resources, etc). OMAP CPUs are very open for development/modding compared to other CPUs, but the side effect is they're not quite as powerful due to avoiding some libraries and hardware techniques other CPUs might use that are proprietary in certain cases.

Personally I don't have that problem with my gnex . Its smooth as ever but, I don't leave unused apps using resources like fb or other rogue apps.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2

so i went back to stock (with the exact same apps as before) and this is a huge difference, no lag at all, no even when installing apps from the playstore. no need for any seeder or lagfix hack to get the device working as it should.
so now the question is wether the lag apears as well after some time or if the lag thing is only present in custom roms. and if so then the question is why.
i will keep my device on stock for some weeks to see how it goes.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

It will almost certainly come back, and it's not only present in custom ROMs. A clean install of a custom ROM should result in the same speed boost as a clean install of a stock ROM. See the following thread:
Nexus Storage Performance Over Time & TRIM

I would also say it depends on what governor and I/O scheduler you use. I would say try the stock settings of interactive and cfq.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

as far as i can remember all custom roms literaly froze when a app was installed. so far i have not seen this on stock and i dont think that is a mather of trim or sheduler/governor.
but i will find out soon enough i guess...
Edit: forgot to ask, you are on a custom rom and your device doesnt freeze while installing apps?
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium

I have tried 3-4 ROMs so far and never faced this problem.
While downloading apps, I can parallely do other tasks, play games, make and receive calls.
And if this helps, My GNex is 7 months old.

I agree. I'm using XENON HD Stable-4.0 Franco kernel r364. Ever since dumping the stock ROM, the Play Store performance is painfully slow. I have 276 apps on my Galaxy Nexus and the Play Store seems to be the only app that impairs the phone's performance so dramatically.
As a previous poster said, a lot has to happen when installing an app. So I tear myself away from my beloved comm dev from a few minutes and do something else. Like relate to my wife

[Q] Color control without custom kernel on JB

Hi,
Having been on JB for the last week and having tried many JB kernels (Trinity, Franco), they just don't seem to match the performance (and battery) of the stock kernel currently.
However, I absolutely need the color control features that come with these 3rd party kernels as my stock GN has a terrible yellow tint to it.
What I would like is if I could stay on the stock kernel while being able to alter my screen colors. I've tried to use the experimental Voodoo app that was test released a few months ago but it didn't seem to work.
Does anyone know of an app or something I could flash that can allow me to alter my colors on the stock kernel?
Any help would be appreciated.
Nope not possible . These files are apart of the custom kernels... and only the kernel has the ability to tweak the absolute color values. So the only way to get the color control is to flash back.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
So, it wouldn't be possible to (theoretically) modify the stock kernel to just include said color tweaks, and nothing more?

Man would I love that.
Another annoyance with 3rd party kernels is that they slow down after a period of time and requires a reboot to speed it up again. So far, I'm back on the stock kernel and it's still flying after heavy use.

Less so with the stock kernel from my experiences. I have no issues with restarting my phone once in a while but doing it every few hours gets exhausting.

Few hours? No days yes... I've never had a kernel slow down within hours. That would be yours apps building cache... the kernel... ironically is what empties it.

XDA Premium HD

So, I just decided to install the tablet refined XDA Premium HD app and really all I can say is WOW, this app looks amazing and works great on the Gnex. It's like night and day using this as opposed to the regular XDA App or even the regular XDA Premium App.
Also, it's on sale for only 99cents right now on the Play Store.
Definitely recommend it to those of you that get your fix of XDA from your device more than on your PC most of the time.
https://play.google.com/store/apps/....xdapad.activity&feature=search_result#?t=W10.
I'll wait for a few more positive comments. App notoriously sucks from xda. Bought premium in the past, as you can see I don't use it.

I bought it a while ago for my N7. It force closes a lot, like every time you leave the app for a second and return. I wouldn't recommend it.

Judging from reviews on the play store for both the N7 and Galaxy Nexus the app is broken and force closes more than occasionally. It's usable but if you're bugged by force closes I'd recommend Tapatalk.

I think these issues are device and rom specific, possibly even kernel specific depending on gov and clock settings. I have yet to encounter that popup while using XDA HD app in almost 2 days. I'm at my PC right now but for the majority of the weekend I have been only using my phone to view XDA and everything has worked perfectly smooth.
I'm using the xda premium app and it works fine. I'm presuming it's for tablets only?
It's powered by ANDROID 4.1..1 JellyBean AOKP ran by Devil Kernel 1.6.0

I'm running 100% stock, odexed and rooted. So I doubt it is device, ROM or kernel specific. Try opening a forum then exiting the app for a minute then open the app and press the back softkey. Alternatively try the xda button at the top right instead of the back softkey.
Please let me know if you get a FC so I can try figure out what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks for trying anyways. Well there must be someone who can help. There's heaps of reviews on the Play Store about the FCs so looks like I'm not the only one.
Or maybe it's just a Nexus 7 thing?

I run XDA premium and premium HD on a nexus 7 and havent had a force close problem. I've run it on about 10 roms but I do completely clean installs and full wipes between Rom installs.
Just wanted to report that's its not force closing on mine.
It doesn't mean you don't have an issue or its not a freak conflict with who knows what, just reporting my experience in case its helpful.
I do have a minor issue where when I get a notification and click on it, it just sits loading for a long time. But I don't like notifications I discovered it purely on accident and didn't try to wait it out a really long time or address it, I ran across a thread that said they're working on that issue already.

Nope, works fine for me.
Nope. Not very. Just a bit laggy.
I see that UI on 4.2 is not so fast as it was on 4.1.2, but some apps (e.g. chrome) works a bit faster.
So, yep - I'm happy with the update.

People who aren't having speed issues: Can you test a couple of scenarios I've noticed in particular?
1) In the new gmail: tap on the account switching area at the top. This loads far slower for me with the new app
2) Put your phone to sleep or wake it up. Sleep/wake seems quite a bit less responsive in 4.2 on both of the stock phones I've tested.

Disable all animations in developers options and screen off animation will be less noticeable.

i made i wipe cache and now is working fine. thanks a lot
No. 4.2 is just as fast as 4.1.2 on my GNex... which was fast whether I use the stock UI or Apex Launcher. Granted there is an initial sluggishness during the initial boot from services loading in the background... but after that my GNex is smooth and fast.
Those of you experiencing slow speeds: Try flashing the factory image from Google. I had one app that didn't work properly and a flash to factory stock and re-root fixed the problem. It's possible you have an app running in the background eating up resources too.
I understand these threads and posts must be annoying to those who aren't having issues, but to people like me, who OTAed a bone stock phone and are left with a less-than-satisfactory experience, it is equally frustrating. Especially considering how many improvements were made with 4.1-4.1.2, which have now been rendered moot.
I guess my only recourse is to wipe and flash stock, but because I'm not rooted and don't have any backups, it'll be fun to rebuild my phone.
ealterh
Turn off that live wallpaper! JK hopefully that isnt the case...
Each Android iteration on the GN has gotten smoother for me. 4.2 is pretty amazing out of the box, much like 4.1 was when compared to 4.0.3/.4. The GN is definitely not lacking when it comes to having what it takes for 4.2.
4.2 is really, really fast. When they fix camera rotation and recent apps, it will be perfect. It killed my urge for N4. Now I can easily wait for one more year... Good job Google.

Lag after a day

So why does my phone start to lag after a day. No matter what ROM or kernel I am on, after about 20 hours my phone starts to lag. If I restart my phone all is good. Does anyone have an explanation? Is this a great 4.2.2 feature? This wasn't happening before that.

Is that even pure stock? There are several posts on this already. There isn't a genuine solution but some have suggested some ways to minimize lag on 4.2.2.

Check your memory usage. I have this problem too - and it seems like my memory if full. Try to see what services run in the background and maybe you can stop some of them. Also look at 'Greenify' - it is an app that stops background processing for apps you don't want hanging in the background. It requires root, though.
do you use twrp? i had that problem until someone mentioned that twrp doesnt wipe completely and used cmw.

would it be too much of apps running at the background and causing it lag?
I'm reading about this issue more and more everyday ... one solution i saw was that to install "Clean master" from Play store and clear cache with that to minimize lag i believe it only affects custom roms and not stock based roms :/

How to stop launcher restarting?

Does anyone know of any fix for launcher restarting ? I am on stock ics and have not long done a fresh install of Rom using pc companion. It is rooted with bootloader unlocked using testpoint and I have removed some system apps bloatware using list from xda. I don't want to install a third party launcher or even a launcher from another xperia phone just want to know if there's a fix to stop launcher from restarting. It happens after leaving an app all the icons and launcher need to refresh and its really annoying. I have latest beta of greenify app installed and sefix app installed and have 160mb left on phone memory.

If you don't want to flash a custom ROM then run supercharge script.

I ran supercharger on stock gingerbread and phone was way faster. I can't say how it was on ICS, because all custom ROMs come pre-rooted.
If you won't miss ICS features, and care about stability and speed, then go for GB.
Or buy a new phone if you have money

Sent from my LT15i using xda app-developers app
If you can afford Nexus 4 then get one - it's a wonderful device and in my opinion you won't need a new nexus or any other phone for years.
But if I were you, I would try some custom ROMs first. They are a lot better than stock. It's free and you will feel like you have a new phone. I was playing with custom ROMs on Arc for over year and decided it's time to move on
Sent from my Nexus 4 using xda app-developers app
ICS ROMs require additional tweaking for Supercharge script to work properly due to different services.jar file.
I can't guide you, because I do not have access to such things at the moment.
