Has anyone else noticed this with Google Now? Network locating - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

I just noticed that it seems Google Now no longer seems to require network spying (locating ) to work. Did this just happen, finally... Or have I just been missing something?
Used to be it needed gps and network creeper on to show anything, even calendar appointments nvm commutes etc.

Well it's kind of obvious it would need your location for commute times. How else would it know where you were to check traffic?

Yea but that is why we have gps... And like I said before, with Network Creeper turned off it used to entirely break Google Now even with gps on.

It uses network based location for when you don't have gps on just like maps. It triangulates your approximate location based on the 3 closest towers you're connected too. It's not as accurate as gps but it can definitely know the area you're in. They disabled the requirements in one of the last few updates, but anything location based won't work very well unless you turn on gps or network location. So the app works it just won't be very accurate. I don't mind leaving network location on since all the data is anonymous. There's nothing in the network based location data that can identify you personally, it sends out a randomly generated ID that changes everytime your Location is requested and it's only used to identify which device the return needs to be sent to. It's much more anonymous than using GPS since GPS uses an ID unique to your device's serial number which with a little know how can be decoded to tell someone exactly who's device it is, whereas network location the most a person could find out is the type of device and general location it was in at the last check in.

The red is what I was wondering
It is much more anonymous doing Network Creeper on and GPS off....but I don't like being a Wifi sniffer for Google

[Q] WiFi 'wrong current location' in Google Maps

Hi everyone,
I'm a bit frustrated by a Google Maps issue that's plaguing me. When I'm on mobile data (3G/2G), the current location function of Google Maps works quite accurately. But when I'm on the WiFi network of my home, it goes haywire and says that I'm a few kilometers away from my home Does anyone have the same problem? Is there a way to solve this? Thanks.
Regards,
Tin
Is this constant or a one off problem? Ive had similar situation happen once in a blue moon ever since ive had phones with gps. If its just a freak occurrence i wouldnt sweat it.
My grandma beat me down and took my nexus. Sent from a jitterbug with beats audio by dre.
It happens whenever I'm on my home WiFi network. I haven't tried it out on other WiFi networks though. But then, since Google Maps can quite accurately determine my location when on mobile data, I'm thinking it's something to do with my WiFi network.
Did you recently move? Perhaps they mapped your wifi at one location and then you physically moved the router several kilometers away.
Umm, no, I haven't moved.
from reading this:
http://forums.anandtech.com/showthread.php?t=2122170
it looks like google and various other companies have driven round and mapped wifi networks in to their database. If you haven't moved it maybe they are just using your IP address and your exchange is that distance from you.
Maybe?

Then perhaps one of your neighbours moved. If your ssid was hidden when google did their mapping then google may be relying on another ssid to locate you. So someone who lived a few km away moves next door to you, they turn on their router, you pick the signal, and now google thinks you are at their old address.
This happens to me when I visit my parents. I set them up with my old router. Now when I visit them Google tells me I'm in my apartment rather than in my parents house.
Maybe.
As for a resolution, you could try turning off 'Googles location service' under location services in settings.

this didn't work for me and I'm also experiencing this problem on wifi.
All this did is turn off the ability of location to use wifi to determine location, which means unless you have satellite reception, your not going to get location reporting at all
I think it is possible to report this to google so they remove the wrong ssid location from their location service.

Phone thinks I'm a thousand miles away

I have a weird situation that I've had since I got my GS3. I go to school in Milwaukee, WI. However, if my phone updates its location while I'm in my dorm room (only that little room), it thinks I'm in Cisco, TX. I can tell you that it is NOT 80° F in Milwaukee. I'm stumped on how to fix it. I'm rooted and currently running CM10
Maybe try gps toolbox form the play store and run it. That may help out on the location issues

Make sur your in an area with strong 3g/4g/wifi signal then update prl/profile and restart phone. happens to me when in a bed location for internet.

Both. I think I'm going to try the ideas given above, although I'm pretty sure my profile and prl are up to date already. I'll get back on how that goes.
Thanks everyone for the feedback!
Once I tried using google maps with the GPS turned off by accident.
It wasn't such a good idea forgetting to turn on the gps

Maybe your dorm room is actually a portal.

I am having gps connection issues myself. I have even replaced the phone. Currently, I have to reboot the phone to get the gps to connect. I have installed the app gps status and still have issues. Has anyone else had the same issues?

Well, I found that I cannot update my PRL and profile the traditional way while on cm10 because it's not touchwiz based. (Maybe I can fix it when I find a good jelly-bean touchwiz ROM.) How else can I update it? The GPS toolbox didn't help to fix anything.
I want to point out that my GPS works fine and Google maps works great.
A hypothesis I have is that someone with a router a floor above me is from Texas and one of those companies that sends trucks out and associates routers with a location to make it able to find your position without connecting to he internet while still having WiFi on associated that router with Cisco, TX. I dismiss this, tho, because there a lot of other routers here, including my own that would only be registered with this location. Plus my GPS SHOULD override that, right?

Both the bone built into the cm10 lock screen (I believe they get it via yahoo weather) and the one from my "fancy clock" widget that uses AccuWeather. If they update outside my dorm room, they're correct, but if its when I'm in the small room (with good GPS signal, 3G, and WiFi), it says I'm in Texas.
Google maps does, and I think GPS toolbox does but I don't know my longitude and latitude.

try going to http://www.geoiptool.com/
and checking what it says when your in your dorm.
Try on 3g, on wifi, and in airplane mode with wifi on please [with GPS off]
Go to settings-developer options-and check if 'Allow Mock Locations' is checked, not 100% sure if that would help, but I know it usually shows you like 2 or 3 blocks away from your accurate location, just incase a site, or someone is looking for your location, like I said, not sire 100% if that would help, but worth the try, good luck

I know on my old S2 on CM9 there was a way to temporarily boot to stock to update the prl and profile. Not sure if that is a option for our phone. I haven't really messed with cyanogenmod on this phone yet.

How To: Disabling Roaming Notification Message

I saw a thread for this with a flashable zip, but is is for the S3 under ICS. Would this work with the Note, or can someone guide me on what to do? http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1858476
I like having as little crap on my phone as possible, and can already tell when I am roaming because of the signal strength icon. That icon drives me nuts because I constantly hop between one to two bars Sprint and one to two bars on VZW at home.

Swipe the notification off and the icon goes away. Or disable roaming guard. The only icon you'll see is the little triangle by the signal bars.

In my case even after disabling roaming guard, the icon still shows when i'm data roaming. I just ignore it now. I only data roam anyway in one particular spot at work during break time.

Mine just flashes up for like 10seconds then goes away with roaming guard disabled. If I have it enabled I have to manually swipe it away but it doesn't come back unless I bounce back on network then roam again. I'm pretty sure theres a way to fully suppress the notification but it would require an edit somewhere in either systemui or frameworks-res, I believe. It's never actually bothered me enough to look into it since it doesn't stick with my roaming guard disabled, or can be swiped away with it enabled.

Even with roaming guard disabled, it'll keep popping up. You probably aren't in an area where the signal keeps bouncing back and forth between roaming and the home network.
Anyways, digiblur has a mod for this. It is even baked into his ROM (which is the one I am currently using): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2157332

[SOLVED with INFO] WiFi Calling and GPS

Is it just me or does having WiFi calling enabled and running use the GPS a lot?
From what i have googled and found is that it does. But i just wanna make sure im not crazy or something or have a rogue app running..
Do any others notice this?
Also, what is it even for? 911 calls?

I have wifi calling on all the time, and I notice my GPS does activate a lot at random times when I'm not otherwise using any specific apps (usually just saying "searching for location"); however, I haven't noticed a connection between the two (the GPS activating when I make / receive a wifi call)

Thanks for the reply! It's not necessarily when I make/receive a call. It's just random. I'm gonna take a look at the apk see what it's doing.

Great, if you find anything post it here. I'm also curious why my phone needs to know my location at all these random times, especially in light of recent news here in the US.
My best guess is that it's related to Google Now (the google voice search thing). Do you have that enabled? They say they periodically take your location to tailor content and make the app "smart" (such as figuring out your home address and telling you how long it will take you to get there from a given location).

I don't have the apk installed for Google now. So it can't be that. And I notice it locks my GPS every time I see that WiFi calling notification. So I'm most certainly it's related to that.
And yeah go USA right? Man I don't get our government.

UPDATE:
So i decompiled the apk, and my suspicions are correct. The GPS for the WiFi calling IS used for emergency calls to locate you more accurately. I am still wondering if i should remove it or not. I may just decrease the interval for how often it locks.

I thought the wifi calling app was closed source, so you couldn't get into it? If you know of a way to disable the tracking, that would be nice (i'm not a programmer, I just know enough to know what "decompiling an apk is" without being able to actually do it)
Not sure why they'd need this feature (presumably they'd have your location anyway from the IP of the wifi connection), and if I need to call Emergency Services, I'll have to tell them where I am anyway.

I can disable it. And it makes it easier for emergency personal to find you as exact coordinates are given to them. If you're on cell towers and initiate a 911 call, I believe it automatically sends GPS information. It's just the WiFi calling doesn't use cell towers so it can't grab the location. And I'm sure they can get ip information.
As for it being closed source, I just decompiled the apk responsible for the notification and all the prompts/tutorials, the actual hard core code is found in the lib files which yes are closed source and impossible to reverse engineer.

4.3 Wi-Fi always on

something to think about when moving to 4.3 (when it becomes available)
"To improve location accuracy and for other purposes, Google and other apps may scan for nearby networks, even when Wi-Fi is off," describes Google.
Android 4.3's New 'Always-On' Wi-Fi Feature Buried in Settings
This is just like sprints "smart network" crap. I'm confident the great devs here will find a way to turn it off.
Sent from Under water
Theres nothing wrong with this at all. It uses less battery than firing up the gps
And BTW you can turn it off in the advanced menu.
There's no conspiracy here. Move along.
