I have a weird situation that I've had since I got my GS3. I go to school in Milwaukee, WI. However, if my phone updates its location while I'm in my dorm room (only that little room), it thinks I'm in Cisco, TX. I can tell you that it is NOT 80° F in Milwaukee. I'm stumped on how to fix it. I'm rooted and currently running CM10
Maybe try gps toolbox form the play store and run it. That may help out on the location issues

Well, I found that I cannot update my PRL and profile the traditional way while on cm10 because it's not touchwiz based. (Maybe I can fix it when I find a good jelly-bean touchwiz ROM.) How else can I update it? The GPS toolbox didn't help to fix anything.
I want to point out that my GPS works fine and Google maps works great.
A hypothesis I have is that someone with a router a floor above me is from Texas and one of those companies that sends trucks out and associates routers with a location to make it able to find your position without connecting to he internet while still having WiFi on associated that router with Cisco, TX. I dismiss this, tho, because there a lot of other routers here, including my own that would only be registered with this location. Plus my GPS SHOULD override that, right?

Both the bone built into the cm10 lock screen (I believe they get it via yahoo weather) and the one from my "fancy clock" widget that uses AccuWeather. If they update outside my dorm room, they're correct, but if its when I'm in the small room (with good GPS signal, 3G, and WiFi), it says I'm in Texas.
Google maps does, and I think GPS toolbox does but I don't know my longitude and latitude.

try going to http://www.geoiptool.com/
and checking what it says when your in your dorm.
Try on 3g, on wifi, and in airplane mode with wifi on please [with GPS off]
Go to settings-developer options-and check if 'Allow Mock Locations' is checked, not 100% sure if that would help, but I know it usually shows you like 2 or 3 blocks away from your accurate location, just incase a site, or someone is looking for your location, like I said, not sire 100% if that would help, but worth the try, good luck

Okay, to the point. I have recently began learning and modding the ba-jebus out of my phone and I have had one major problem. The GPS doesn't work. With my knowledge of triangulation and the hours of research I have done reading threads on here complaining about similar issues, I have figured that my phone isn't connecting to multiple towers at one time. When I used the stock ROM for the Inspire it worked just fine, but ever since I used CM7, LeeDroid, and even AR, the GPS has been whack. Y'all are probably thinking, "Why doesn't he just use satellite GPS tracking?" Well my answer is, "I don't want to waste money on something I don't absolutely need if I can just utilize a bit of math on my phone to find my position on this rock we call Earth." So, what I'm asking for, is how would I go about allowing my phone to connect to more than one tower at one time. Is it something to do with the build.prop, or my APN settings, or something further down in the radio flash?
Do you even have mobile location checked in settings-location. Also cell towers is not gps and what do you mean that GPS tracking cost money?

I do have "Use Wireless Networks" checked. You're right about the cell towers not being GPSs, but your phone can use the ping between three towers to determine its position between the three, allowing for a GPS type system. What I was referring to in my above post was that "Where I come from, to use a satellite guided tracking system, you must pay money."
I know how cell positioning works, but I don't think you can influence it as a user.
Also how do they make you pay for using gps?

Agreed, how come you pay for satellite navigation? If you are referring to the navigation apps, many of them are for free: waze, google maps brut mod and many others.
I think he means he doesn't have gps on his plan. I remember that before you had to pay extra for that, but now I'm pretty sure it just comes with your phone so long as your phone has gps capabilities.

do you mean a-gps?
maybe you take a look at "Gps-Status" nice app with a-gps download
I do use GPS-Status for the compass, and if satellite GPS is free now, then I will stop trying to use triangulation.
I just went outside and tried the satellite GPS, and it took a minute to find a satellite, but it works. Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help.
IM RUNNING CALKS latest and greatest btw... Most all fixes get a fast lock, or at least a lock after a reboot. The REAL test is:will it still get a lock after, lets say, 8hrs? This is the only "fix" that has truly passed that test... Try it, and you will agree I like to open gps status and get a lock on satelites before i use my gps too, if that makes any difference.
This zip, plus GPS status works the best. Wipe dalvik and cache then flash away....
Best way to check is use GPS to get first lock and directions.... if that's good, then try to do the same thing a few hours later BEFORE A REBOOT.... works like a charm.... I finally think this one works guys... check this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=13140032&postcount=17953

Depending on where you live should determine which zip you should download. And if you travel all over the u.s., just use the north american zip.(i recommend using the zip for the actual area that you live in)... Next, flash from recovery, then install GPS Status & Toolbox from the market.Turn on gps, open up gps status & toolbox, and select menu/settings/Display & Tools.. Then check "Show time to Gps fix"...keep gps status & toolbox open till sats are fixed..DONE. NOW I get immediate locks!!!

this fix doesn't work
my phone was good until last week, now navigation never works, GPS takes 30-90 seconds to get a location within a few meters of me.
i've been trying everything, as many have been, and this fix only works for the first minute after using gps status. if i wait an hour and check maps again, i have to reset and re-download to get sats again and it still doesn't always work.
at this point i'm mildly convinced it's a hardware issue. unless a new driver is found, i'm going to try to get an exchange soon.
Edit:
Going back to square one (so far) has been a good fix - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1351761
Edit 2:
Nope, going back to pure stock works as temporary as flashing regional GPS sats or clearing GPS cache

Some of those weather apps use the network location, not gps, and some display the nearest weather reporting station instead of your exact location. It all depends where the apps get its information from.
Beautiful widgets reported Dudley as location, the town next to me, probably using that tower. Weather Bug reports popular bluff airport, 25 miles away.

You try to pre map it in google maps first? I find that works.
Sent from my SGH-T989 using XDA
You need to use a map app that doesn't require data, and has pre downloaded maps already on phone.
Try Sygic from Google play, it is something along those lines
You have to anticipate being in an area with no service and pre cache it like another user said. Go to maps, settings, labs and check pre cache map area and cache your anticipated route
I put my phone on air plane mode and turn on gps(to try gps;here is full network) and i search some place and it keep saying searching.

I'm not sure what you're saying. If you're going to be using your phone as a gps in an area with no signal, you have to pre cache the area in an area with signal or wifi first. Then you can just rely on the GPS in that pre cached area.
Your GPS should be able to find satellites regardless of your lack of service. A good app to check on how your GPS is doing (# of satellites, accuracy, etc) is GPS Test. As for the maps, that question seems to have already been answered.

You can't. If you want navigation you have to have data unless you pre cached it beforehand in an area with data.
Yes u can, but only using the method I posts above. ^^^
That's the same thing as I was saying. If you want navigation, you have to have data at some point. Whether it's to download an app or pre cache maps, you cannot start in an area with no data and no preparation and use navigation.

Not really, once u download the app and maps using wifi on initial setup of your phone, u don't need data to use sygic. It uses your phones GPS in combination with downloaded maps, no active data connection required. Its core function is entirely different from Google navigation app, which requires a live connection

Depends heavily on the position inside your car.
The closer to a window or the windscreen the better. Try holding it up to the drivers window for a few seconds and see if it locks on.
Even the best GPS isn't going to work if it's completely shielded from the satellites by the metal roof.

Should not have to restart your phone every time you want to use navigation.
I am having the same issue.
The GPS icon won't even display in the info bar without a restart.
Do you think this is a hardware or software issue ??
I notice about once a day on average that the gps icon will show up in the status bar. Sometimes it's only for a second or two and sometimes it's there for a couple of minutes. One time I saw it and it just seemed to last forever (I didn't time it but I'd guess 15-30 minutes).
I've gotten messages a few times about apps not being able to access location services. I don't use maps very much but I had it open the other day and it just froze up on me. No message about gps but I didn't keep the app open very long after it was obvious it wasn't going to work.
I'm on rogers in Ottawa.
Edit: Just played around in maps/navigation and gps flat out doesn't work. It was using cell tower triangulation and searching for gps the whole time. I had to turn on wifi to get an accurate location.

So, after I posted last night I went out side and checked my GPS. Sitting on the steps infront of my building I conected to GPS in google maps and navigation right away - it worked like a charm.
Then I noticed it said "4G" instead of LTE in the status bar. I live downtown surrounded by buildings and I drop to "4G' on my front steps like 90% of the time. So, I get up and walk down the block and my LTE kicks in. Low and behold, I lost GPS. It only happened briefly but I lost the signal during the switch. Then I read that the note 2 only has a-GPS and lacks regular GPS. I don't know a ton about this stuff but I did read that connecting to GPS can sometimes be an issue if you only have a-GPS and your connection sucks.
Hopefully this is something that can be fixed with a software update. Who knows, maybe this is why those of us with the I317/I317M are the last ones to get the OTA update. I'm gonna call rogers today and let them know about the issue and see what they say. I don't wanna go through the hassle of exchanging my phone if every handset has this issue right now.
Are you using the Perseus kernel? If so GPS does not seem to work correctly regardless of which location provider is used. I reverted to stock and my GPS works.

Right now I'm stock/unrooted and I intend to stay that way for the time being. I'll be heading to the mall later so I'll pay a visit to the Rogers store and Wireless Wave (awesome third party wireless store in Canada - they really know their ****) and see what they say.

The guys at wireless wave hadn't heard anything about anybody having any issues with gps. Finally, I went to Telus and found someone who actually had a clue and she said it was the first she'd heard of it and actually recommended I check xda.

Hello folks,
Just an update .. I have been playing around with waze (free at the appstore) for the last day and a half and my gps has been flawless.
Our GPS issues could more then likely be with the actual Navigation app that comes pre installed.
By the way Waze seems to be very impressive I must admit :good:

Interesting... I've had this issue happen only once. Nothing I did would start a GPS search. I waited about 2 hours outdoors in a car. Once I restarted the phone, it had a lock on lots of sattelites within 10 sec.
It hasn't happened since.
I had no problems with 4.2.2 using the updated t-modem.bin file with my phone, and it got super funky the other day, so I reverted to stock and rooted and proceeded to bring it to where I was before it went all goofy.
here is info on what is going now:
SGH-M919
T-MOBILE
BOOTLOADER - M918UVUAMDL
BASEBAND - M919UVUEMK2 (i flashed only the Modem.bin file) I get good all around data reception edge/4G/LTE.
However, Now, my GPS takes a hella long time to get enough of a signal to start the navigation, Sometimes i'm waiting over 10 minutes for a fix on location.
I tried using GPS Toolbox and reset and downloaded the gps file, but no joy there.... Sometimes even the GPS toolbox takes a while to "Find" all the satellites...
I thought if there is a GPS radio file I could reinstall, I'd rather do that than rebuilding the whole setup again. ALL the other stuff is absolutely perfect and I'd really prefer to keep things working like now, except for the GPS lock-on-time...
Thanks, I'll wait to see if anyone has input before I go re-inventing the wheel again...

I experienced a similar scenario between 4.2 JB and 4.4 KK, my GPS was super on 4.2 , back in March I took a screen shot as you can see, and then today . Less sats and I have to turn it on and off to get to start up.
I'm running Fenny's almost stock rom al present.

I haven't had any issues after using faster GPS. I even can get a lock in my basement.

Where do you navigate to in your basement?
Do you live in a castle? ???
Anyways, I don't like using apps, would rather figure out what's wrong or go back to stock.

Lol my weather app tracks my location. But it's not that anything is wrong. It's just scanning for satellites that don't exist in your area so by using faster GPS you tell the GPS antenna to only look for satellites in your area.
