[Q] Not sure where to post - Desire General

Hi folks
I'm so new here, it took 3 days to find the "thank" button (had to turn off some scripts in browser)
I would be grateful if folks would indicate where to put what posts (subjects, questions), what NOT to post (I suspect I might be speaking "taboo" words) I am a tad autistic, we can be rude without meaning to be. But I been building PC's since '1989, piddling with Linux since mandrake 7, so the good news is CAN read the "destructions" and I know how to use IRC just a bit, on the PC (post code to pastebin, and such)
I'm an old biddy. So old I can remember when a landline "Caller ID" was called a "Snitch-Box". I have grudgingly accepted that wireless phones must send THEIR OWN meid over an unsecure radio in order to work. This was due to happy discovery of pre-paid carriers that don't require MY DNA in order to accept my money. Prior to that epiphany, I totally hated the cellphone concept ... Not Secure. In order to activate the "device", ever, it must first be SECURED.
I *did* lurk around many weeks before diving in with the barage of questions... With the help of the tutorials here, have managed to survive a couple of "brickings" and even got a ROM into my phone :victory:
First -- about me poor "Labaratory Rat" device. Can't really call it "phone" coz it was a "brick" when I got it. My friend dropped it in the sink and thot it was dead, gave it to me with a collection of scrapped CDMA phones. Dried it out in dessicant on the hot H20 heater, and to my surprise resurrection! Trouble was, I had revived a very unhappy 'device'. Crammed full of bloatware, [solved with Cyanogenmod ROM] and still has some "firmware" issues. I am simply trying to restore the "device" to CLEAN, NAKED, OPEN source, before I decide wether it's practical for telecommunication use.
It has an acceptable camera, I enjoyed using it to play music, I didn't really see a need to do anything to it till I found I couldn't load a paid tutorial APP for my class.
I can make a PC poop a popsickle and then carve you a tiny rosary outa the stick. I'm so old I can remember moving "DIPP" switches on a motherboard to clock a CPU. I'm VERY CERTAIN the firmware issues can be cleaned up.
OK, so what I have here:
BRAVOC DVT2 SHIP S-OFF
HBOOT-0.98.000
TOUCH PANEL-SYNT0101
RADIO-2.05.0.11
Jul 5 2010:19:14:11
The good news being it's got a fast little processor and 512K ram (I can remember running autocad on 512K, it's usable) The bad news is it was probably thrown away because the carrier (US Cellular) has shipped it with root-kit (Of course, autistic person cannot understand why anyone would pay for a "device" that has a built in Root Kit) I know, the carriers offer the hardware for free, Like "Here is some free cheese = MOUSETRAP"
Managed to get 4ext recovery touch v1.0.0.5 RC9 testing in there.
I like it ALOT better without "Sense" (Cyanogen 7.2 is what's in there now)
I can see that the Android-ness is very much like Linux, which I "grok", it appears that "hboot" is the Android equivalent of "grub"?
And I am guessing that the "root-kit" is living in this HBOOT (I've noticed that the 98 series seems limitted to US Cellular shipped HTC's)
From the looks of it, I'm gonna have to learn to "build" (again -- and I only did it a couple times way back when) to fix this? since I see there's some very nice ROMs folks are running on this phone, but I don't need the "Sense" part?
Moderator, please move my post if I'm in the wrong place. I honestly cannot find where the "Un-ROOTKIT my BravoC" section is. Or maybe point me toward the discussion of how to make/build/install this HBOOT?
Thanks in Advance

Thanks in advance

An observation about upgrading to Crossbow

Amidst all the furore about the availability of 3 similar crossbow roms for the Universal, I have become increasingly amused by the number of comments from various people in the various threads, complaining about certain things not working, which sometimes work for others and then qualifying their complaints by saying that it is critical that the failing apps work on their devices and are desperate for help....
At the end of the day, if any of your apps are that critical then you shouldn't be upgrading - particularly to Crossbow, as it is very much in its infancy at the moment. I have no doubt that within a short while, the various Rom magicians here will have a number of alternatives available that are 'relatively' stable but anyone who depends on the functions of their Uni to the degree where they cannot survive without them should leave well alone....
Just my opinion
I entirely agree.
Guys, the WM6 roms should not be used.
If you happen to use it, backup first, bolt your windows, and suck it up if you loose your device, your data, or your innocence.
You will of course screw your warranty and a puppy will die. C'est la vie.

I agree with you, it was the same situation back in the days when WM5 popped out
How true! By upgrading to WM6, you implicitely accept any shortcomings, bugs, missing functionality etc. Period.
(We should stick something along this line in a large fontsize on both the frontpage and the forum frontend. Maybe even in blinking red
Can I downgrade to WinCE 2.11 and get a version of active sync that will work on Windows for Workgroups 3.11 please?
Just want to make sure I am using something well established with all of the fixes, and years of background knowledge available for it
Oh, and I will need a serial to USB adapter so I can sync hehe.
Well, there are a lot of people around who want to upgrade to WM6 despite the fact that they have no idea what they're doing. If the average user sees an upgrade to a "New OS" they're probably more likely to give it a go than they would if it was just an upgrade for a bugfix or a re-arranged contacts database (rightly or wrongly).
The intelligent ones will do a bit of reading before deciding whether to even attempt the upgrade. But there will always be some who get themselves in a mess because they've rushed into it.
Fortunately, everything they need to know to get themselves out of their mess is on this forum somewhere - Unfortunately it seems many can't even be bothered to search - so the same old quetions are bound to be asked a hundred times over the next couple of weeks...Still, we all try to be helpful, don't we? (Even if it does get tedious at times!).
lol, no, it bugs the hell out of me, hence the reason I posted this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=290234
I was a n00b once, I don't think I posted any lame questions, maybe some, I can't be bothered to go back and look, but from memory, it was only after I couldn't find it with the search that I asked somewhere.
I don't have anything critical I just have to run. Sure, there's software I have bought, and would be irritated if it didn't work immediately after an upgrade, but I am happy to take the risk, I have a Univeral and a Wizard, so I can always use the other if I have problems on one.
It's like this on anything though, something new comes out, everyone thinks they are an instant expert, messes it all up, and then begs for help because they were too lazy and stupid to read a few pages that would have explained it all to them.
Help, I just flashed my Universal to WM7 (Photon) that I downloaded from your website, and now it does not come past the bootscreen anymore ... I need my machine yesterday because my life depends on it, and I did not make a backup and now Microsoft has caused me to ruin my machine causing me to go out of business and you have to help me since I got the rom update from your website!!
(hehehehehe)
Well if you can get to the boot screen, all is not lost.
Get some superglue, and put a few drops into the USB socket.
Plug it in, and give it at least an hour to dry.
Now carefeully hold your device in one hand, and the cable in the other.
Now pull the cable out as fast as you can.
This shold prevent any further upgrading issues, or problems from ever happening to your device again.
Partially I agree, but i mean normal (lame) user who wants to upgrade only to show his palls couple of different # on boot screen. but i think helmi, ivan, indra or all else would never do good, working rom (like ivans aku 3.2, helmi 3.5), which are stable w/o feedback.
worst is here is helluva lot of people with prob."i tried 2 upgr. 2 wm6 & got COUNTRY ID err)
I love wm6 http email function. And somebody get the wm6 messenging in wm5?any hacks?
My mate sent me this, just some info that most people Know.
Testers of Windows Mobile Codenamed Crossbow (or Windows Mobile 6.0) have leaked at least 2 versions of the pre-release online,
According to our source betacollector the pre-release is incomplete, missing a few functions but working fine.
No Windows start orb here, that seems to be cropping up on everywhere on Microsoft software now, but then again WM6 is not yet final -who knows if that will be included in the final release.
The leaked version specs: WM6PreRelease.rar (54177kb) Build date 1/12/2006 (15341.4.2.0) Rom 2.00.02.pv / External Rom 2.02 PDAVIET
Theres also a second one WM6CB.rar weighing in at 59608kb for the MDA Pro / Universal or qtec 9000 that one is older than the above mentioned leak.

Hahahahaha!!
Don't try this at home!!
I did an upgrade to WM6 on a fairly new 9000. Took me almost 6 hours to complete. The damn thing got stuck in the bootloader, lost my RADIo ROM, got it "bricked", managed to un-brick it again, lost my EXT. ROM, but at the end, it worked out and now the "damn thing" works fine on a brand new WM6 ROM. Exept for video calling and a few minor bugs I have no complains.....
Moral of the story. I am a man. Men like to do technical stuff. If you do not know what you are doing, stay off the damn thing. If you like to inflict pain on your self, but know what you are doing, just do.
Fooling around with some new gagets is cool. Sometimes it works out, sometimes it doesn't........
In my case, it worked out. Me is happy.........

Bad NAND blocks causing problems?

I've installed and reinstalled android since the .7 builds before android 1.0 was out, i've installed using data images and ext2 partitions... I've put my time in, so i've had a G1 since december and have pretty muched stopped playing with my kaiser, I picked it up today and have been trying to do a NAND install of Poly's build with no luck... got the 320x240-Panel2-Tilt NBH installed and booting, along with poly's build dropping into the andboot folder... and updated to radio 1.71*, after doing a install to NAND (and wiping /data & /system)... I see that I have bad blocks on my mtdblock3 (NAND) when its mounted... I cant seem to boot android all the way, anyone else have a bootable android that has bad blocks... AFAIK most devices that use NAND work around potential bad blocks (Wii, XB360, etc) will it format around these blocks?
wow, I reflashed the .NBH, and still getting the same bad block error, set the phone down and was browsing the web and listening to TwiG, look back over at the phone and it WAS sitting on a shell on a blank line ie. "#", and started the NexusOne logo!!! so I guess its all good with bad blocks and all!
Now another question, I'm on a $9.99 featurephone unlimited dataplan for AT&T, if I throw my sim back in my Tilt, will they figure it out? I dont have my IMEI registered, but obviously they can see it... lol, I know its a little off topic.
I have 3 bad blocks on my Tilt and doesn't seem to be affecting anything.
Yes bad blocks are a part of every NAND memory device. I read somewhere that there is like a 5% failure rate on these types of memory. It's just how the tech is. However, there is a system built into it to keep track of the bad blocks, once it's marked bad, it will never be used. I also have 1 bad block and have had no ill effect on my kaiser. It just seems that the boot process lists which blocks are being reported as bad by the memory.
Hope this helps.
I have around 7 bad blocks, and OK with my sistem.hahahahahahaha.

Yeah they will. They figured it out in less than a week when I got my old Hermes. Even without my IMEI registered, and a custom ROM installed, my account on the site showed I was using a Cingular 8525. They automatically switched me to the $30 data plan. There was absolutely nothing I could do.
at&t
"They" do know, but if you have a feature called "smartphone exclusion" you can get away with a $15 data plan, but as soon as you upgrade to a smartphone the exclusion feature is removed.
So, if you have two lines always upgrade the one that will not be using a smartphone, then switch sim cards.
The only way to know if there is a smartphone exclusion feature is for a rep to open your account and look at your feature codes, even the $0 features.
This probably doesn't make any sense, but I wish there was a way to block an IMEI, then no problem. In the past we could put all 1111's for an imei in the system as a non att phone and there were no reprocussions.
peace
I've wondered the same thing at times about the imei. It seems every time I went exploring the "making imei different' option, all I would ever get is the big lecture about stealing phones.
(RANT ALERT)
Kinda like when you go buy allergy medicine and get carded, cause there are a bunch of losers out there doing something illegal with it.
I am not sure of the ethical issues with using 'too much data' or paying more, b/c I use my wife's Samsung Flite (insured non-smartphone) with $15.00 internet tethered bluetooth to my laptop, so eh...... I'm always a stickler for paying what I think something is worth to me, especially after a company has REALLY taken advantage of me a time or two. And btw, where I live, I only get 1 bar most of the time. Really, our phones hardly work, so we have skype on the PC to make calls from our home. They work great in the city that I work in, but i'm on a computer using google talk mostly. Can you say "Holes in the coverage map?" And yes, i've tried all the radios. Be it my kaiser, the old hermes, my wife's samsung flight, or the 3 we've had Blackjacks, theres just never been good coverage. So ya, I think i'm overpaying a bit. I just use my phone as a toy, a hobby, a see what it can do.
I've read about IMEI changing being illegal in certain countries. What about the USA? I mean seriously, I drive a car with no catalytic converter, but we don't have emissions checks in my state. Yes that means I'm breaking the law, but I also think that relatively speaking, i'd rather the police spend their time busting Meth labs than worrying about my car emitting 20% more stuff from the exhaust.
Its all about saving money, because everyone is trying to get ALL of it from you.
(/RANT)
Can the imei on the kaiser be changed, or killed for that matter? Has it been explored?
And please, spare me the stolen phone lecture. I just don't think I can take it.

Pulling out the catalytic converter won't increase your mpg, as many modern cars actually require the back pressure. You'd have to also modify the computer, or own a car made in the 70's and older.

I bought my Kaiser off Ebay, and it's actually made for the UK. Just to try and avoid having to pay a $25 fee for having access to unlimited internet. Course the 3G doesn't work with T-Mobile in USA, but I use 2G anyway to save battery power.
Cell phone industry is just one big scam. You can't afford to buy a new phone, unless it's under contract, and switching cell phone companies will cost you a disconnection fee. Not to forget that their cell phones are locked to them only, and requires you to beg for the unlock code.
Honestly wish that T-Mobile had a $10 fee for getting unlimited internet, cause relying on wifi is a huge hassle.

Well i've officially derailed this thread. sorry. I'll go join the ranks of losers that I always complain about
BTW, my car doesn't have a cat cause its a 18 year old Cutlass Calais, and I'm not paying to put one back on where the original one rusted away. It does have a new exhaust however, and right where that cat converter goes is a nice shiny honda resonator from a civic Si (got it from a friend at college when he put an aftermarket exhaust on his car).
I don't think you'll get prison time in the United States for messing with your phone, I'm not sure either. I've never heard of it actually happening due to someone changing imei numbers in order to profit criminally in some way.
BTW, just to tie this thread back into its original form, i've gotten Bad Nand blocks reported one time. I flashed hardspl again using sdcard method, and haven't seen them mentioned in android boot since. Weird huh?

I get errors with bad nand blocks as well, but as someone mentioned, that's normal. It's like buying a LCD TV and you see a few dead pixels. That's normal, even though it pisses you off, knowing that companies dare make products with some defects. Even CPUs have this too. For example, when Intel or AMD makes CPUs, they pick the ones that happen to be made well. The ones with the less defects can clock higher, and therefore cost more money. The CPUs with the more defects get clocked lower, and sold cheaper. It's gotten to the point where some companies are disabling cores. ATI and Nvidia first did this with their videos cards, disabling pipelines that were bad. Now AMD does this with their Athlon and Phenom CPUs, by disabling 1 or even 2 bad cores. Good news is that, many products were sold without defective cores or pipelines, and if you know what you're doing, and lucky enough, you could turn cheap products into expensive ones.
Yea I derailed myself. Anyway, after messing with Android on my Kaiser for 5 hours, I decided it wasn't ready. There's 6 issues that bothered me. Doubt any of it is related to bad nand blocks.
#1 Random features don't function unless you restart phone. Couldn't play MP3's because format wasn't supported. Restarted phone, and now I can play MP3's. There's a lot of instances where restarting the phone will fix a problem, but that brings me to the second issue.
#2 Restarting phone can cause it to not boot. Wouldn't be a huge problem if I didn't need to restart often, but I do. Usually, pulling the battery and holding the power button for a while, usually fixes it for me.
#3 Random freezing. You never know when your phone will just freeze. I got it to freeze when changing my ring tone.
#4 Installing applications must be in internal memory. A specific Android related problem, but annoying as hell. There's a solution to this, but it requires me to partition my SD card, and format it as ext2.
#5 No offline GPS. Again, specific to Android but something I can't live without. I heard Ndrive can do it, but I'd rather use the GPS that comes with the Android. I'm sure there's a way around it, but no good step by step guides to do it.
#6 Can't send audio with texts. I'm not sure if this is a Android issue, or if I needed to restart my phone. I love being able to send pictures and music formatted in the AMR format to friends, but for the life of me I couldn't select any AMR audio to send with texts. I could attact pictures with no problem, but couldn't find any of my mp3's or amr files. The same could be said about changing my ring tone to a mp3, as it just couldn't see it.
Did what i said to you in the other thread help with the sticky boot, and the lockups?
You mean the 3.29 boot loader? It still happened when I flashed it. Though, I did notice that Android booted faster, but that maybe my perception.

Its not illegal in america, it IS undoubtably illegal in lots of europe... its obviously illegal to exploit that to do malicious things... but whatever, the knowledge to do so is obviously NOT illegal, I'm VERY tired of that argument... that kind of info IS on this site... also, claiming illegality in the US will require citing law for me to really take ANY credibility in it...
*once again, I'm only promoting the KNOWLEDGE to be able to modify this, not the actual act... obviously there are a TON of scumbags that want this info to push devices illegally in the EU, but I personally could give a crap about them.*

I guess someone totally missed the smiley at the end of my post.
As for the knowledge how to do it, it took be approx 5 seconds to put a search in to XDA's search box and come up with the results how to do it. Try it yourself instead of complaining about it.

I've searched, and used good forum etiquette, no need for the harshness, i've tried the single piece of software available that isn't INTENDED for the Kaiser, and I couldn't get it to work, also couldn't find any reports of it working for the Kaiser. PM me if you have any other info.
Please PM me too. I've performed the same searches and haven't found anything useful.
Actually changing your IMEI in order to get a service you have not paid for would be fraud, which I believe would be a felony charge at least.
There are US laws on the book regarding changing electronic "serial numbers" on mobile communications devices. They don't say IMEI (this was to deal with ESN cloning fraud in the late '90s with analog cell phones) but if you actually read the laws as they are written - you'd see they could easily interpreted a lot of different ways.
And in todays climate of anti-terror paranoia, I'm sure that changing your imei might also be construed as an attempt to avoid legitimate surveillance, i.e. wiretapping, which uses the imei in order to intercept traffic to and from a suspects device.
Not that i'm being a killjoy, I just had a look for ways of changing imei, and found a few ways of doing it, i'm just about to point anyone in their direction, since i'm in the UK

Tilt 2

I stumbled on to this site looking at phones on ebay. Great find. I see that some of the threads indicate that some end users have been able to replace the ROM and OS on there Tilt 2 WINMO phones with Android and other fixes to make this incredibly slow freezing phone a respectable Smart Phone. I have been a WINMO user for over eight years and have never owned a bigger slower piece since my original brick phone. Have had it replaced twice and now am going to switch to the new Android offering from At&t. But if I can make this better phone I am all about it. I know I sound like a total rook but some help would be appreciated.

sure you can replace WM with Android, but remember its not a fully operational OS because its a port, so i hope you can live with no sound, bluetooth and no camera....battery could be an issue but with the latest builds its been a HUGE improvement ever since the project started, and also to have a MicroSD card in hand to make Android work, but keep in mind the speeds are not going to be like Windows Mobile since it runs off of a MicroSD, but if you really up for it and you want to speed up your Tilt 2 if youre on WM, i recommend flashing a ROM just be sure to HARDSPL before you do

Cool so Android is out on the Tilt. I noticed what you have done with your tilt 2. Even though I am Computer savy I would like to do something somewhat easy for the first time out. Thanks for the help I will check out the info you gave me and hopefully get it done right.
I keep reading posts about what a POS the Tilt 2/TP2 is and I'm baffled because mine just doesn't seem to fit that description. Mind you, it's no speed demon, but it does all I ask of it with ease. And I've yet to have it freeze up requiring a physical reset. I hard reset it once, but that was because I installed some stuff that wasn't designed for it. I've modded the heck out of mine and gotten the eye candy (of which there's a ton to choose from) where I like it. Yesterday, I impressed some friends when I quickly got some restaurant info from Bing on my phone and then did a quick Skyfire search on some rock band to settle a bet. This is not my first WinMo device, but it certainly is the best so far.
brother I wish mine was all that. I got my first htc tilt2 in Jan this year. Did alot of research and did not find a whole lot to worry about. Got the phone and was happy for about the first month was up. The internet is slow, constantly freezes, when switching to keyboard the darn thing goes three ways from sunday and locks up. I have actually seen static like on my tv. So I went to the local At&T device support center and the dough head told me its windows you will have to learn to deal with it being a hunk of junk. On my second one signal sucks still slow as hell and locks up all the time. Have had to reset (hard) numerous times. Not gona get rid of them, however gona check out some of the mods and see how it goes. The HTC is also not my first WINMO originally started with the orginal Black Jack and dont look forward to the droid conversion. But Will check it out and Hopefully mod this one out with this site.

dropped calls/no signal

Hi all, i know this is a well talked about subject as i have done numerous google/ask searches, i find an awful lot but don't really seem to get any answers, over the last week i must have read hundreds of pages so please anyone who is going to tell me to google this problem, please don't as i have until i could scream lol......anyway, this is the problem i am having......
Hubby bought the HTC desire on ORANGE but then decided he wanted an iphone4 so he gave his desire to me, i am a vodafone user, as we have teenage children and the freedom/family packs are such good value, i wanted to stay on vodafone so i got the phone unlocked with an unlock code at my local mobile fone shop...hubby had never used it as a phone, just as a gadget to mess about on so we weren't aware there was any problems.... the problems i am having are these...i can't get the phone to hold a call, if i use wmcda only mode, its slightly better and i can usually get a call out but it will drop out if i stay on the line to long, if i use gsm only then i can't get a call out at all, the phone stays silent for a few seconds and then just drops out......on both settings the signal is fluctuating like mad and often gives me a x where my signal should be, i love the phone as a gadget but at the moment im not getting much luck with it as a phone.....a few things i thought may be to blame are
could it be the way the fone shop unlocked it??
i have used the same sim card (voda) for around 4+ years, could i need a better sim???
could it be because all the settings on the phone belong to orange and arn't set up to use on voda??
i have read on a few sites where people have returned these phones only to be given another one that has the same issues where others have recieved another hand set and the problem is solved but some people say they have no call dropping/signal issues at all and love the phone....im confused, i have been looking around the site and seen peopl are using custom roms and/or debranding the phone, could that help with my issues??
if anyone can help me i would really appreciate it ...
thanks in advance
emma......ps sorry for such a long post
If your SIM is 4+ years old, I would suggest that a new one might be in order, so at the very least I'd request one if I were you.
You've not mentioned which ROM version or baseband you phone is currently using (see Menu->Settings->About Phone->Software Information). Try posting these so we can see if you are running a very early ROM and/or radio.
Regards,
Dave
P.S. Lastly, divorce hubby for being unfaithful to the Desire and buying an iPhone!
lmao he's an iphone fanatic, he has the 3g, 3gs and now the iphone4, oh and a macbook lol.. personally i love the desire but i'm having a nightmare using it as a phone, i called HTC up on friday and ups have actually just came and picked it up, i have been waiting on them, so i can't actually check anything now, i wish i had realised and put the stats of the phone in my post, they said it will take 7/10 working days to get it back and i feel lost already lol....i am hoping and praying that they can sort the problem out, i have also requested new sims from vodafone and they are on their way to me also, so if i get my phone back and i still have same issues with my sim i will try the new sim, if that doesn't work, then i guess i'll be back on here or trading it in
i think im right in thinking the rom is the software, but by radio are you referring to the FM radio or to the radio waves your phone uses??
I have an iMac and a Macbook, but I dislike the walled garden that Apple has put up around the iPhone/iPad!
When I referred to the radio, I meant the cellular radio - not the FM radio, but the point is moot now if you've sent it in for repair!
Regards,
Dave
yeah i forgot he also has the ipad, i love that like, he jailbreaks them himself so we get all the apps, better than the ipod, which he has also lol...he's a total apple nut!! once i get my device back i will check the stats an post them up here straight away......if the radio is old could that be the problem?? and do the newer ones help, i had to sign a fom to say they could erase everything and put the latest software on so im presuming they will also update the radio?? if so maybe that will correct the problem, i had looked into using a custom rom before i sent it back but i was scared that if i did that then they wouldn't repair/replace the unit also i was a little wary as the instructions seem a little complicated
.......i have since sent my desire of for repair/replacement and have contacted them today (since they have had it 3 weeks) and was told it is ready to be sent back to me and that it has had the mother board replaced...has anyone else had similar problems who had had a new mother board fitted and then the problems have stopped??? im thinking that when it comes back it will be as useless as a phone as it was when i sent it off
thanks
As far as holding calls are concerned, the Desire is bad... much worse than any iPhone I've used. That said in built up areas I never really have problems with voice, but in rural areas the reception is very poor... I struggle to make calls in my house, which was never an issue when I used Samsung phones.
3G reception is a separate issue!
Well the motherboard is basically the phones guts, so that coupled with the new rom/radio should solve your issues. I can't see them replacing the MB just for the sake of it!
Let us know how you find it afterwards. Personally, I've no bother with reception and love my desire
well i've been expecting my phone back for days and it still hasn't arrived, i was quoted 5 to 7 working days when i sent it off for repair 3 WEEKS ago, anyway when it comes back i'll see how it goes and let you all know....could it possibly have something to do wiht the fact that its an orange branded phone and im getting a code to have it unlocked to vodafone????
(which i will have to pay for again now i have a new motherboard)

[Q] HELP - child wiped out phone (brick?) and mom needs help...

hi everyone! I am seeking your expertise as I came upon this forum trying to help my son fix his phone. He's only 11 years old- but as we call him at home our "tech guy". He got a brand new HTC One M8 (carrier is ATT) yesterday and 3 hours later - the phone was "bricked" as I have been told. Apparently, (these are his words) he "unlocked the bootloader using HTCdev, then flashed twrp, then flashed supersu.zip.
I have no idea what any of that means but apparently he did something wrong because his phone is not working and we don't know how to fix it. If you have any compassion for a frustrated Mom who's trying not to be angry with her son -- I would appreciate any advice you can give on how to fix this.
I have attached a picture of what the phone looks like when we turn it on. I also posted this under the ATT forum too.
Thanks in advance for your help!
You bought your 11 year old son an M8?
Do you adopt?

Going by the pic, the bootloader has been relocked. So that's a problem. The bootloader will need to be unlocked again. I would suggest heading over to Youtube, as I have found video tutorials the most helpful when I was learning this stuff. There are plenty of videos that are even specific to the M8.
Edit: I should also point out that a phone can almost always be saved/restored if it still powers on. So don't panic. It would probably be in your best interest though to find someone experienced to fix it. Trying to explain the process to fix it here is not going to be helpful to someone who doesn't know what they're doing. If you can't find someone experienced, then my best suggestion, as stated above, would be to watch some Youtube tutorials on unlocking/rooting the M8.
Okay. In all seriousness.
When was this screen grab taken? In other words, is this your current position with the phone?
Relocked... etc etc
Are you in the US on AT&T?
Your tech son needs to restore ATT backup.. Hopefully someone in that forum has it
sent from my mobile device
UPDATE on my son
Thank you all so much for your responses! It is much appreciated. Believe it or not - this kid fixed it all by himself. Basically (remember I am not technical) he unlocked the boot loader then flashed a ROM onto an SD card and was able to load. Don't think I worded correctly - but I think you know what I am talking about -- it's fixed and working fine. WHEW!!
I guess he "retraced" the steps he did last night and was able to get it. Actually it's strange the first ROM he put on wasn't allowing him to find or pick up wifi. He found another and got it. This kid is good!
I will certainly keep the info to this forum handy because something tells me that I will be visiting again with this child..................
Have a great evening!!
p.s. I typed the wrong key -- he's 12 not 11 And - sure I'd adopt! But he did save up his own money to get this phone and only wanted it to do these "cool" things as he says to it.....rest of my family - we are simple and use Iphones -- sorry.
All I can say to this is Wow!!

I'm glad to hear everything worked out for you and your son.
It's great to know that you're letting your kid tinker around as he is. I know these are quite expensive devices, but we often do learn from our mistakes, and that is even more true when it comes to technology. I'm sure that I have a bit of a bias being a software developer, but tech is such a huge part of life now, and that is only going to become more so with time. So getting an early start as he is, your son is going to have a leg-up in the world, even if he doesn't choose this type of field as a career path.

Agree! But keep an eye on him, so that he sleeps from time to time. And hide your car keys!
Please don't create multiple threads asking the same question.

Thanks!! He's very into all of this stuff and always has been from a very young age -- started with Legos at 2. He doesn't play sports and this is his "thing". He really LOVES all this stuff. He's actually really good and understands most things. As you can see - we certainly have issues now and then but overall we certainly let him "tinker". I really should write stuff down so we can laugh about it in about 10 years. We tried to limit his Internet time a couple of years ago and added a password on his computer that we had to input on his computer to gain access. Little **** put a keystroke logger on the computer to get the password. Then he somehow modified the main password screen to say PENIS when we logged on. The stories go on and on....... We will let him continue his technology building and hopefully he really have a bright future in technology!
Thanks for all of the input and support from this forum!

I was the same from an early age and always have been. I have taken apart or modified more household items than I can think of. I broke a lot of stuff messing as a kid, but now I have a lot of knowledge and can fix almost any thing properly.
It seems you are not so bad yourself with the technical stuff as most moms wouldn't have a clue or even be able to repeat what you have explained here.
