I'm attempting to sell my Epic 4G. Sprint says the ESN is clean, and was able to activate the phone on buyers account.
Voice works, 3G icon comes in, but data not working. HFA didn't work. They manually configured Phone#/MSID, etc. No data.
We thought it was the ROM (FC09-based, IIRC), so I flashed back to fully stock EL30. Same result.
Sprint store rolled it back to EB13, tried provisiong again. No change. I ended up giving buyer their money back after 2 hours at the Sprint store.
Back at home, I did a ##786# reset and a ##72786# reset.
Digging in with QPST, I noticed that even after all the resets my Sprint username (myaccountXX@sprintpcs.com) is still showing under PPP Config / Um / User ID. Would that be the problem? Should I blank it out?
This phone's HA / AAA passwords were changed in the past... do those get reset when provisioning?
What else should I be looking at?
Thanks!
Questions go in the q&a section.

Not familiar with EFS Clear, but searching it out is giving scary results. ("...Verizon tech...sent me a new phone", etc)
Safe to run? I don't want to brick the phone.
It clears out everything to make the phone ready to activate. It may try to do hands-free activation but since it is not active it will fail. If your buyer can't activate it and Sprint can't then what do you have to lose?

Odin'd to EL30, with "EFS Clear" checked, User ID is now "[email protected]".
HA/AAA values (most importantly, the HDR auth pass) are written to NVRAM. I don't think a factory reset will clear those values. I think you should be getting at least 1xRTT data, but no EVDO data unless you write those NV items back to stock. Once you change them, I believe they are lost forever (until an EFS clear at the very least).
There exist threads where people write about how to backup HA and AAA keys. If a ##RST# restored these NV items, these guides wouldn't be necessary.
tl;dr
You may be SOL using 3G data with your original MEID. Good luck.

This phone was sold to me as having a bad ESN, so I didn't bother backing up the NV info when playing with it. Now that I'm selling it, the ESN turns out to be clean!
Is there a higher level of Sprint tech that could restore/recreate/repair the incorrect HA/AAA info?
It seems a waste to force a good-ESN phone to Cricket/Virgin/Boost.

I wouldn't think so. The critical info is the profile 0 HA key. Everything else is easy to obtain.
I've read that the M.IP_0 HA key is somehow calculated based off the MEID and burned in by the manufacturer. If true, it would be some value calculated and verified by the network when associating with your phone.
This sounds plausible because all the other keys have valid alphanumeric plaintext values (e.g., on Sprint, AA is always "secret", and profile 1 HA is a random jumble of 6 alphanumeric characters), but M.IP_0 HA is nonsense (non-alphanumeric) when converted from hex to ASCII. Anyways, because the network may calculate this independently based on an internal hash, I doubt any tech can tell you the key (it's unique for each handset, not readable in plaintext, and, as far as I know, the hash used to calculate it is publicly unknown (if it was known, we wouldn't need to NV read our old phones' profile 0 entries)).
This is as much as I bothered to read/comprehend. Someone more knowledgable than I is welcome to correct me.

Your IMEI is your phone's ID number to the network. No IMEI = goodbye connectivity to ATT/Tmobile/etc. Your phone just lost it's 2g/3g/4g capabilities. In the world of Apple, it's like your iphone turning into an ipod touch.

more bluntly, a phone without an IMEI won't get served a signal by AT&T, as posted earlier by someone else if you had read the topic. And what's a phone without a data OR voice connection.

No, Samsung phones from way back have had a history of corruption of the EFS partition/file/whatever.
This happened to me with my captivate a few years ago the only way to fix it was to send it to Samsung for a factory firmware reflash.

You must be aware that you are living in area where changing IMEI is illegal
As well this is against the rule of XDA
Kindly report moderator to close this thread otherwise we need to force to report you for spamming.
I think there is a difference between having the intention to actually change the imei and just wanting to understand. I would like to know how but that does not mean I intend on doing so. Or maybe we should just ban and close every other topic that relates to illegal activities. Action must be taken once it is understood that illegal activities are being encouraged but if it is only for the sole purpose of keeping informed then it shouldn't be a problem.
