Anyone go from a sgs2 to a nexus? How is it? I owned my SGS2 lte for about a week and sent it back due to a camera issue. I can choose to get the nexus now if I want to rather than a replacement SGS2 Lte.
Just looking at the features, all that really seems better is the HD screen. Worse camera, slightly worse cpu (1.2 vs 1.5 ghz), no sd card capability, and ICS is coming to the sgs2 eventually anyway. The nexus however is $50 cheaper for me than the sgs2.
Any ideas/opinions?
Came from European GSM SGSII (still have it) to the Nexus. Processor is the same @1.2 so not noticed much there.
Have the latest ICS port from Samsung on the SGSII at the moment but it's not as snappy as the Nexus. The camera is the only thing that I miss from the SGSII.
Never used the memory that I had on the SGSII so no biggy for me loosing SD support. If you are bothered 32GB GN are on the way.
The CPU on the SGS2 lte/skyrocket says it's higher clocked than the one the nexus has. I was watching some videos of ics running on it. I don't know why but it looked quite laggy on the nexus for some reason.
Are you talking about the 1.5 ghz qualcomm cpu. I'll take a TI cpu clocked @ 1.2 over that one any day.
Sent from my Nexus in Texas.
Yea the qualcomms aren't my fav in this day and age.
While clocked at 1.5 it runs as fast as a 1-1.2ghz of another chipset.
Camera is hit and miss. The instant shutter is nice on the Nexus. I don't know if one is better then the other in terms of speed or power but the Nexus has a longer life and some neat tricks you can't find in other phones.
The screen, LED notification, and Google support are enough to sway my opinion.
LTE EX Galaxy Nexus - AOSP KANG
Asus Transformer - 3.2.1 OC/UV
Oh so whats the difference in cpu then? I thought they were the same with different clocks.
Qualcomm is cortex a8 and just not as powerful. They usually undervolt well. That is all that is memorable about them. The nexus will have a longer lifespan with developers and Google updates if that means anything.
Sent from my Nexus in Texas.
also in ICS qualcomm SoC will always be in last place as they use adreno gpu which is like night and day compared to the SGX in TI SoC and GPU acceleration is a large part of ICS
I still am not too sure. don't know much about cpus. So is the one on the nexus better?
Yes, lower clock speed but better GPU performance which in ICS it will almost always win

I like the "stock vanilla" android look, so thats why i went with the nexus. I do prefer the physical shape of the sg2 a bit better though.

It's excellent!
I was wondering which one to go for, I get to upgrade a month today and I really want the best phone going. I think I'm going to get the nexus simply because its the more up to date phone. I'm quite surprised how slow these phone companies have been to release a phone that comes preinstalled with ics to out do the nexus. I can't find any new phones that are coming out soon!

The GS2 LTE?
It sure is.
S1: Cortex-A8
S2: Cortex-A8
S3: Dual Core Cortex-A8 >>>Any GS2 that is LTE or for Tmo's 42mbps network.
But why would you want to do 1080 when it only has 720p res? haha
Nice to know though. Can it play mkv 720p files just fine?
Well, i have to say that i love the Pure Google Experience that Nexus phones brings to customers, i feel really atracted by the fact that Nexus phones gets updates so frequently and mainly it's style. I followed closely all the Nexus Phones, Specially the last one, the Galaxy Nexus. Although i like it very much, The desing could be a bit more attractive, what disappointed to me is the hardware. 5 Megapixel Sensor in a TI OMAP 4460 Chipset? Are you Kidding me? What could be the reason, don't know, although it only carries 5mp camera the quality is very good and the 1080p 30fps video recording is good also, but i expected a better hardware, don't know in that moment what was better, anyways, the hardware could handle the 720p resolution just fine. What i'd like to see in the next Nexus phone is:
*Display: 4.7" with 720p Resolution, Super Amoled+ without Pentile.
*1.5 GB or 2GB of RAM
*TI OMAP5430 or 5432 Processor at 1.5 or 2.0 GHz 28nm Dual Core or Quad Core Processor with POWERVR™ SGX544-MPx
*8MP Camera (Its fine with 8mp but if they want to add 12mp or 20mp its welcome!) with 1080p 60fps Video recording.
*Better audio and Speaker hardware.
*2150mAh Battery
*Android 5.0 Jelly Bean.
*4G LTE Support
What do you expect from the next Nexus Phone?
You pretty much nailed the specs just need the shell, camera and battery to follow suit.

Why? Removable storage + partitions + UMS is a joke and annoying to deal with. Give me single storage with MTP any day. Just bump it up to 32gb/64gb this time around.

Seriously. Especially considering the MAXX can do it now. All phones should have it by the end of the year.
As far as OP goes, I'm down with that except:
*we need a bigger battery than 2150mAh. Let's do 3000mAh+, we know its possible.
*we don't need a larger camera sensor, we need a better one. With good software. MP's don't really matter.
*why just LTE? nowhere else in the world is close to adopting LTE other than North America. Let's see 42mbps (why not 84mbps?) dual-carrier HSPA+, with a pentaband radio. We need that option too.

Except it'll be for sale in November, and all phones will have similar specs by that time.
The Nexus S was ~$600 with WVGA screen, 512mb RAM and 1ghz single core processor in 2010.
The Galaxy Nexus with 720p screen, 1gb RAM and 1.2ghz dual core processor wasn't $1000 in 2011...

I have been discussing the expectations of the next Nexus device with Qbking77 and other ACS members.
Have any of you heard any news or even rumors of the next Nexus device?
Also, what are your expectations of a new Nexus phone? Including:
-Screen specs
-Internal specs
-Etc;
Input would be GREATLY appreciated on this! Thanks guys!
I think is going to be another Samsung phone. That's what I read, that google had chosen them again.
I also heard that we were going to see 5 Nexus phones but I highly doubt it.
I will probably be a quadcore but i don't really see anything wrong if they go dual core, maybe same screen size or a small bump to 4.8 to be along the lines of the Galaxy S3. 2gb or Ram and improves screen, possibly still pentile technology, which i don't mind to be honest. A 8mp improved camera.
I hope they use this OMAP processor or Exynos. Something completely open source for easy hacks and tweaks.

and my expectations for the next nexus following todays android phone footprint:
- made by samsung (again)
- 4.65 to 5 inch HD SAMOLED screen (with + maybe?)
- TI OMAP 5 processor
- 1 gb of memory..
- 16/32 gb internal storage (no external memory)
- 8 megapixel + FF camera
- curved glass screen
- notification light
- NFC
- possibly with android 5.0
and im hoping they will make only unlocked version..

But yeah, I hope it is Samsung too. I hope to see a thinner device as well. I mean the Gnex is thin but nothing like the RAZR! My father has one and I can't believe how incredibly thin it is!

Motorola RAZR thinness maybe... But knowing their reputation with Motoblur I doubt they would let Google get away with a device without it...
But YES the build quality of a Motorola would feel slightly better than the plasticity of the Nexus devices in the past...

not a single rom/apps harness the entire 1gb of memory until now, even most costum rom builders here are always keeping their rom memory friendly.. so really theres no point having over 2gb of memory beside spec sheet show-off..
also, smartphone screens caps at 5 inch max imo.. above that would be galaxy note territory.. and i dont think nexuses would compete with note..
Here's what I wish next nexus has:
4-4.6' super amoled HD/plus/super LCD.
latest TI omap/ other powerful processor
16/32 GB storage for international version!
8/12 MP + other hardware features/Low light..etc
1+ GB RAM
battery life Razor MAxx or S3. 3.8V battery
build quality like One X or Razor. as thin as S3/One X.

the presence of the sd card slot makes this article fishy. we all now what's Google's take on that matter. also if they're going to use a dual core, it's gonna be A-15.
For me the dual core is pity . Yet the US version of the SGS3 runs fine on a good dual core.
If they bring out a new nexus it has:
- A15 dual-core
- OR a A9 quad-core
A A9 dual-core is hardly an upgrade from the Galaxy Nexus. So this is bogus

If it is GSM, then it will be pentaband (work on both). I don't think Google will release another GSM Nexus that isn't pentaband.
I don't think that the next Nexus will be a super phone. Past 2 nexus devices didn't pack stellar specs. I think Google doesn't want a stellar device, they just want something that'll get the job done with developers. I LOVE the size of the GNex and hope they don't go bigger. My 3 cents.

- Please no increase in screen size. Okay, I could live with 4.8" but let's stop there then.
- You won't see too much internal memory as long as Google tries to push its cloud services.
- I actually like the phone jack on the bottom. If I take the GNex out of the pocket when it's up side down, I automatically have it correctly in my hand.
- I totally agree on bigger battery! It's one of my most-wanted features!

OMAP 5 would be great! But there aren't that many possibilities in terms of open source anyway. I'm not sure about Tegra, but I'm pretty sure Exynos and Qualcomm chipsets are too closed down to come into a Nexus device. So there's not a lot remaining But I too hope they definitely bring an A15 based SoC. We really need better power management!

Internal memory? The Verizon Galaxy Nexus starts off with 32GB; whereas, the GSM version starts at 16GB. There was a rumor that there will be a 32GB GSM and it was cancelled. Options are good as long as the price isn't too much to not justify the purchase. Even a better choice would be to offer a 16GB/32GB/64GB. But I really prefer 32GB as the starting point and then 64GB if people want that. I personally don't like the cloud because I'm in New York City, I spend a lot of time underground (subways) and there isn't service down there. Not to mention, if you're on a carrier with a monthly cap (AT&T, Verizon) cloud is a huge no no as well.
Secondly, I guess it's just preference. I personally prefer mines up top because of my headphones (its a L shaped and not I shaped so L shape goes better for top. Just my opinion.
Battery... I hope so too! I hope they follow the hands of Galaxy Note II in terms of battery without compromising the size of the phone.
Although I do wish Google marketed their Nexus line of phones better. It could be a huge blow to Apple's iPhone 5.
If you had to get a new phone, what would it be, and why ?
I am looking at the Xperia P/S or HTC One S. They are cheap and good phones. Im pretty much done with playing with ROMs and Kernels Just want a fast and stable experiance.
The HTC is a nice phone but there are "rumors" about issues, while the xperia NXT line is quite bugless (I had the xperia U and gave it to my sis).
Im asking because my screen is broken and im looking to sell the device (I can get at least 200$ for it !).

The glass is broken at the top, LCD is fine. The phone started making some slight motherboard-related issues and besides, changing the front glass is either expenssive or risky. I bought it for like 500$ here (Israel) about 6 months ago, and now a new one would cost 450$. So 200$ at least is fair ^^.

Phones are pretty expenssive here. the quad core are over 520$. Nexus 4 is 350$ for 8GB but it sucks with all it's bugs and poor build quality.
I'd rather pay those 350$ for an xperia p/s or htc one s. Now sony is cool, but htc is very attractive due to it's processing power.
HTC one S-
Processing power
size
thickness
price - 480$
XPS-
processing power
Screen rez
hdmi
price - 400$-430$
XPP-
size
bright screen
build quality
PRICE ! 300$-320$
EDIT- SORRY FOR THE DOUBLE POST
i'd rather change the broken gnex to a brand new gnex..
lol..
sorry..so much love for gnex mate..
If I need to change my phone, I would like to try Windows Phone. May be Lumia 925.
I'm still worried that using Windows Phone will cause me problem with lack of apps and data sync with my current Google Account.
So if I choose another Android, it should be a phone with large battery capacity (a little disappointed with GNex's battery performance). Maybe Xperia ZL or HTC One. I definitely will try to avoid getting another Samsung phone (despite the price is really good).
The only phone which I would consider right now would be the HTC Butterfly, because it has a 3200 mha battery.
But currently I am still fine with the gnex. I will first wait what will come this year.

If I didn't want to wait then I get the Nexus 4. Currently waiting on the Moto X and Nexus 5 though.

Xperia ZL C6506 is impressive. Pentaband, multiple LTE bands, unlocked, quad core, 5"screen, 1080p, 2GBP ram, 13MP camera. Order straight from Sony store.
Take away the sd card, slap on Key Lime Pie and there's your Nexus 5.

well obviously it won't get as much as development as the nexus 5 but then again i may be wrong :silly::silly:
I'm stuck on Verizon, so I'll likely be buying one of the new Motorola phones coming out in the fall. If there's something good unlocked, I'll probably jump on it. If there are more expensive ones with a better quality/better support, I may be willing to wait until my contract is up in June.

Really? 1.5ghz quad core vs 1.2ghz dual core, 2 gigs of ram vs 1 gig of gnex? Hmmmm not really much of an upgrade is that? I don't think so..
Btw if your reading humors about the motox humors said that it will be dual 1.7ghz processor with 3 gigs of ram...

You can never have enough of RAM despite what you think.
And to say the uograde from the gnex to the n4 is not much of an upgrade is just a sweeping statement. I would say it's not worth it to upgrade from the gnex to the n4, but if you have the cash, why not?

was thinking the same , until i decided to wait and see what android 5 will bring for my nexus , i hope good stuff

You got to own one to know it..
I'm pretty sure it's abused or dropped, my friends never had issues with the n4 back, so do my friends with iPhones(that's not the point alright, just pointing out the similar glass back)
