Battery drain after Installing Redpill Kernel 1.30 - Galaxy Note II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I flashed redpill kernel the daybefore and now I feel the battery drain issue has started.. I used my screen for less than 2 hours and 1.5 hours for voice call.. Wifi On all the time... NOW I SEE THAT ANDROID OS HAS TAKEN MOST OF THE BATTERY .. Please check the screenshots and advice me on the same ! My phone is up for almost 17hours now and has 47% battery left...

Then change kernel.
this is XXXDDDAAA

hey bro..i had the same issue with the latest Red Phill kernel ....i thought it was caused by random apps that i installed...so i did a fulll wipe ..with the super wipe script...and formatted and cleared everything on the phone..installed the stock rom 4.1.2 ....SAME BATTERY DRAIN...changed to omega ...same...changed to phoeniX ...same...
so i decided to change the kernel...i tried perseus kernel...and i just can tell you one word : " WOOOOW" !!!
battery is amaizing...get about 10 hours screen on time with internet and screen brightness to 25% .
BTW i undervolt the cpu frequence every step -100mV ....amazing...no lags...no freezes...the GPU same!! undervolt it to -100mV .
i'm over happy with My Note 2 using :
Miui v4 3.2.22 ( Latest v4 rom based on 4.1.1) soo smooth ..smooth like iOS or even more!!
Persues kernel alpha 34 latest!!
i get 20 hours deep sleep 0% battery drain ..( No wifi ...no internet....just 2g network) " btw why should i leave wifi or 3g network when i sleep??? "
try my combination...and you will be more than happy.
HIT THE THANKS BUTTON IF I HELPED YOU!!!!

Wifi definitely.
And don't forget to disable data as it works in background even after wifi is switched on.
this is XXXDDDAAA

thanks for the reply.. but I have a doubt.. you said you changed the freq steps by -100mV .. can you tell me where to find the setting ?? I am using perseus now with stock jellybean 4.1.2 Indian Rom...

Hey bro .. I just noticed that the charging time from 10% to 100 % is taking more than 5 hours on usb.. i checked the current widget and it shows 1700ma.. still taking so much time ?? any idea??

Oki the voltage setting you can see it in the stweaks app...the new one that came with your pwrseus kernel....at the first start...grant it root rights...then scroll down...and you will see for every cpu step ..you will have voltage values.so if you want i can upload a screen shot...that might be the most undervolt able values that are stable
Here are both cpu and gpu voltage values...the cpu speed 200-1600 stock...gpu the same..160-533
And i added a screen shot of the battery usage
I will upload screen shot friday..cuz im busy right now my friend
Btw about the alfa 34..i am truly sorry...i mean the 33 alpha version.

Forget tgat stupid widget...first of all did you increased tge speed of charging units in stweaks?
I dont think so..second...why would you charge over usb? I think your laptop or pc dont have this abilitiy .... dobt waste your time increasing the charge speed over usb...stay close to stock..it is the safest option.

Thanks mate ...
And I surely increased the charging current via USB to 1700mAh... You are saying it is useless ?? Then why did that option got into the kernel setting ???... the stock current that comes is around 450mAh via usb.. I did it coz I dont like to use the charger coz it does not have a socket where I can keep my phone for charging (cable too small ) and I know that the charger is rated 2A.... ie approx 1700mAh current comes through the outlet.... Am I wrong ??? The same thing I did by tweaking the settings via Stweaks ie to 1700mAh which is the max value supported by the kernel....
Please upload your screenshot.. it will be a great help

it works ..but your laptop usb port does not support it...but try it on a 3.0 port...or charge it on the wall. hehe!!!!
the option works 100%...but you have to have an electric source to support that output bro.

To be honest...it might take a century to charge my phone to 100% on my laptop's usb port..hehe..and yes it shows the 1684... i dont know why...just forget that widget...

Adrenaline ROM 2nd Edition [BATTERY MAXED OUT WITHOUT LOSING PERFORMANCE]

First hope all the Devs dont get me wrong.. im just giving some usefull tips over here in way to make everyone happy and share my achievments
You may not belive me but it worths a shot to try it i guess, since i say im able to have my GIO running over one day and half using it a lot and by that i mean:
- around 1,000 text messages (here in portugal text messages are free for same operators)
- 1-2hrs of total voice calls
- 3g always on with syncs every hour
- Wi-Fi turned on around 4hours
- Radio and music playing around 1h
- besides some games, facebook,email...etc...etc.. apps used
So think about it... i've just realized a lot of ppl in here have some problems with battery in GIO, so im not advertising im just helping everyone!!!
So what would you need?
-Samsung GIO
-Adrenaline ROM 2nd Edition
-Internet connection
-and the most important part... patience!!
So lets take this in simple steps...
Get Adrenaline ROM 2nd Edition and then is where the tricks begin...
you'll have A2SDGUI app open it:
Just activate Apps are on SD!
Zipalign on Boot is on
then on Dalvik tab:
Dalvik Cache on SD-EXT
Dalvik JIT is on!
then Move and Rebuld!
(ths step is important cause in my point of view is what it makes the rom faster after the next steps, this way you'll improve your RAM free space what is a must have eheheh)
After that phone will restart just wait and enter A2SDGUI again but now on LowMemory tab:
Select Ultimate low memory settings and CHANGE!
(no probs found with multi tasking with that config over here... but you may lower it if you find troubles)
then A2SDGUI is done
Now... i use SetCpu because of the Profiles setting if you dont have it use NoFrills CPU and skip the profiles part
Max 480000
Min 245760
Conservative
*Set on boot
Profiles part:
*Enable
1st: Screen Off
Priority 100
Max 245
Min 245
Conservative
2nd: Battery < 30%
Priority 50
Max 320
Min 245
Conservative
Ok guys that's it you've finaly made the hardest part... you can always try to edit this configs at your own desire but this is the way i found it way smooth and with good battery! Just meant to share it!
The one and the last part is a "add on" im still testing...
an app called Battery Calibration, that basicly does the same as "Wipe battery Stats" but you avoid the entering recovery part
plus im doing it weekly every fridays and just do half of the calbration process...
Let me describe it:
Friday morning when its 100% go to app to clean battery stats... and just let it go till 0% battery when its completely dead normaly at sunday while having dinner
Hope you guys liked it and appreciate my explanations... if i made some ILLEGAL thing dont censure me just warn me and if you dont like my post dont complain or insult...
AS I SAID IM JUST TRYING TO HELP EVERYONE ;D
... besides for more explanations or doubts just ask
And dont forget to hit Thanks if this helped you for sure
Now is up to you guys to try it or not, as i said no differences in performance but big ones in battery

Mine doesnt really look like a tutorial..
i made it rushing (unfortunly) i dont even know if it works for everyone since depending on ppl use of phone diferent settings must be applied
and besides that topic is from Ace, but doesnt differ too much from mine so thats nce to see
besides he talks in undervolting and havent see any values for it but is something im going to try it soon on GIO and check the results...
Just to add some more info on my post battery last for 2 days now the battery calibration is maybe working for sure lol
if anyone has tried my methods please post feedback
just to make it clear i wont modify anyones ROM just trying configs to boost battery

No wonder you are doubling the battery life, you're clocking it to half the speed!
Doesn't it affect performance though?
thanks for trying to help people.....That part i appreciate.
underclocking the phone will be good for only those that rarely use their phone for anything other than phone calls/texts....but for using browser, games etc...it will be terribly rough....
why is battery life such a concern? it doesn't matter to me if i plug it in beside my bed each night if i have to.
to each their own though
but the main things that affect battery is not the cpu speed....its the use of internet (mobile net or wifi) along with the things that occur in the background such as email and messenger app syncs that use internet.
edit: i reread this part again:
ou may not belive me but it worths a shot to try it i guess, since i say im able to have my GIO running over one day and half using it a lot and by that i mean:

- Wi-Fi turned on around 4hours

- besides some games, facebook,email...etc...etc.. apps used
that is a lot of stuff you did....I am glad that this works for you, and hopefully others will be happy to
Well I find your advice good, but I clock it at 673 MHz max, it's smoother and I can do absolutely everything. But all in all, great

[BATTERY DISCHARGE] share yours

How bad does your battery discharge in an hour? Overnight? Screen off?
My battery discharge is bad i think...
Around 3%-5% in an hour in screen off + without data...
For overnight, well maybe around 10%-20% without data...
Its very different when i was using galaxy ace, galaxy s plus and galaxy tab...all this device only consume about 3%-5% when i let the phone in idle for an hour with 3G data always ON...
And consume 1% for overnight without data (6-7 hours).
And i always get about 50% when use it for normal day use in 10-15 hours...
Why galaxy y sooo different? Small device with monstrous battery eater
I use my data when i need to use it now on galaxy y...its a pain when u are a fb fans or something like that
well i don`t use 2g neither 3g but when i use wifi for 1 to 2 hours i think 15 to 20% battery discharges.
I have Jb3.0.4 and Savie kernel (u.v. to -80 mV)
Cpu settings are intellidemand + sio.

Wel bro in my country the 2g 0r 3g runs like turtle very slowwwwww. If u open a light page e.g fb login page it takes almost 2 mins(not joking) to load and most of the time it fails to load no matter which browser u use . So i always use wifi.

I use stock rom for calling and sms, several times with wifi to read news. all Fresh stock rom even without root. I think stock rom LJ1 is good, fast performance, long time battery use.
I can watch 3 movies online ~ 4 hours continously and 100% goes down to 23%
But i have a bad news ... yesterday after i post in this topic, i root my fone to add adobe flash. And now it cant reach to 2 days on battery with call and sms ( No wifi, no 3G, no film, no game )
I dont know but i think ill unroot my phone or re-flash stock rom via odin and happy using this tiny phone without adobe flash

Recommended : pm.sleep_mode=1
#pm.sleep_mode=0 -> collapse suspend
#pm.sleep_mode=1 -> collapse (will totally power off the cpu)
#pm.sleep_mode=2 -> sleep (cpu is still on, but put into low power mode (registers are still saved)
#pm.sleep_mode=3 -> slow Clock and Wait for Interrupt (lowered frequency and voltage)
#pm.sleep_mode=4 -> wait for interrupt (no change in cpu clock or voltage)

A call for battery efficiency

Hi all,
I am proud to be a small silent part of this community and to see how much the Galaxy W has grown due to the collective work of our members. I feel like the phone has damn near doubled it's value now with all the custom ROMs, kernels, tweaks, etc, etc that have been implemented in such a short time. Really, I can't see how this phone could be any faster! That being said I feel their is a void in resources dedicated to focusing on battery life while still retaining acceptable speed.
Moving on to Kernel 3.X has really brought great features and speed to our phone, but at the cost of extreme battery loss. It's early on in it's development, so I think there is room for improvement. I have noticed that members are starting to complain about battery life and I for one agree that this is a problem. I wanted to open a forum where we could collect ideas here so our precious phones could ideally make it through the day (or at least a half of a day!).
Anyway, I hope this will be a good jumping off point for discussing. I only ask if members could refrain from the old, "Just change the battery!" unless the user is reporting the battery is more pregnant then a Kardashian sporting twins.
Ideas
Some ideas to post about
ROM
Kernel
Governor
I/O SCHEDULERS
Tweaks
Apps
It would really help if contribute ideas on how to improve our battery life even for just a little.

I've had some success using conservative + row.
I'm really hoping to find a kernel that has more optimized conservative governors. Anyone have any tweaked conservative governor experience? I was looking at Scary or Lion heart, etc?
Btw I'm on RC 6 + Chronos kernel.

I'm going to try Governor: Conservative. Is it better than SmartassV2? Anyway, I'm going to find out, just finishing the charge to 100%. I'm gonna test on CM10 Alpha 6 + Athena Kernel. Will report back after draining.

I'd love to get a CM9 or CM10 RC7 with 2.6 kernel along with a kernel 3.0 version for people who loves kernel 3.0
I am not asking to develop 2.6 kernel further. Previous 2.6 kernel is very good, but we need a ROM (base updated/sources updated) which can support 2.6 kernel fully. 2.6 Kernel was giving me much better battery life compared to kernel 3.
i tried flashing respective 2.6 kernels on CM9 and CM10 RC6. It seems to work fine but if i plug the usb cable to pc then all memory cards get unmounted. ie.. i can't copy files to phone or vice verse. I hope arco gives us a updated source for 2.6 kernel with RC7 release..
My suggestions for better battery life:
1. First thing first: make sure your battery is not dying; if it's bulging, replace it immediately.
2. Use a kernel that's undervolt-able. I use ICS, and Yoon.Kernel is perfect for me.
2a. Then, undervolt your phone. The Incredicontrol app is usually compatible with the method used by your kernel. Or, read the kernel's thread to find out which app to use.
3. Use Greenify (app) to 'hibernate' apps you don't need to run in the background at all times.
4. If you have the money (and can purchase apps via the Play), purchase "Autostarter" and disable apps' starting points. You should focus on the "After Startup" and "Connection Changed" events.
5. Every now and then, while the phone is on, turn off all data connection (wifi or 2G/3G), turn off sync, and let your phone charge to 100% *and* keep charging for awhile (trickle charging, 1-2 hours should be enough), then let the battery drain until your phone shuts down (by using it normally). Let the phone cool down, plug it into the charger, and power it on, and let it charge until 100% again.
6. Use BetterBatteryStats regularly to find apps consuming too much power and/or holding wakelocks too often; complain to the app maker, and replace it if the maker won't/can't change it.
7. Remember to turn off wifi and/or use 2G only mode when you're no longer using them.

Pep, with full respect to your suggestions that are legit, but this can´t fix the battery drain issue CM9 is having with it´s new 3.X kernel.
They all will reduce the battery drain of course, but wont bring it down to the level you will reach with 2.6 kernel.
I´m still not sure what exactly is causing this, but in my case it´s for sure not my batteries nor other apps causing this.
As I already posted in the Bug report threat, I now flashed RC6 by going totally pristine. Formated both SD Cards and whiped everything, just installed BatteryMonitorWidget to control the battery drain. It´s twice as hight in DeepSleep compared to RC2 and RC3 with it´s old 2.6 kernel.
So first of all we need to narrow down what exactly is causing this.
Therefore I suggest to install first the BatteryMonitorWidget to comapare our results and to share the settings whe have changed after installing RC6 the pristine way.
First my configuration:
1. SDCards swapped
2. Dithering disabled
3. 16-bit Transparency enabled
4. Freeing up resurces enabled
5. Kernel sample Merging enabled
6. Zram disabled
7. default governor and scheduler
8. Syncing Accounts disabled
9. Updates and notifications in GooglePlay disabled
10. Wlan and MobileData disabled
11. Baseband XXLMB
My results with 2.6 Kernel are:
~16mA at daytime in DeepSleep
~ 5-8mA at night in DeepSleep
with kernel 3.x
constantly ~35 - 50mA in DeepSleep
and I checked it´s really in DeepSleep Mode.
So it looks like the radio is consuming more power while keeping the phone connected with the radiostation while the phone is in DeepSleep.
but....
I once also tested hadi´s 1.6 yoon Kernel with RC2, which is basing on Arcos RC2 kernel. By using the Ondemand govarnor in his kernel to compare the battery consumprion against Arcos Ondemand governor, hadis Ondemand governor also comsumed more than Arcos Ondemand Governor. With his OndemandX givernor the consumption was pretty much the same like with Arcos Ondemand.
So maybe it´s also something that changed in Arcos ondemand governor in 3.x kernel.

Ah, I misunderstood the intent of this thread, then, my bad :banghead:
Hmmm... I'm willing to do some experiment... but there are several apps called "Better Battery Widgets"... which one?
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda app-developers app
i don't know how will you classify my battery life because for me if the battery is enough to last at least for 8-9hours(hours spent in college) then i call it good enough
i use athena with no UV.

1 think usually done wrong in forum i'm following is they're using task killer or app to manage their free ram. this app is THE REAL BATTERY KILLER. they stop needed service and make your phone awake . not to mention the choppyness because the os needs to restart services and many bad effect it causes

Oh I see there are several apps out now using the same name.
I´m using this BatteryMonitor Widget from 3C.
So when using it:
1. Do not recalibrate the battery as it will otherwise need much more time to show you accurate readings.
2. The App needs at least one or two charging cycles to recalibrate itself (not the battery) as it needs to determinate the exact capacity of your battery.

Hm well I´m used to recharge my battery every 3 to 5 days because it´s most of time in DeepSleep Mode. I´m just doing calls and surf the net in my breaks at work. So only turning on MobileData if it´s needed. At home I´m having my PC for surfing the net, so MobileData and WLAN is disabled as well.
With RC4 my battery drain was so high it even wouldn´t last as long till I´m back home from work. With RC6 i think it would last at least 12 to 18 hours, but it´s still a huge difference compared to the RC´s with it´s 2.6 Kernel.
Agree with you about using such apps like Task Killer or scripts like V6 Supercharger. They all need extra CPU time to do their jobs and often are causing more problems than they are solving. The Android OS can manage such things better itself and terminate unneeded services itself too.
---------- Post added at 08:23 AM ---------- Previous post was at 07:51 AM ----------
Additionally you can use BetterBatteryStats in case your phone is keeping a long time active to see what is causing this. It´s free for XDA members.

I can testify to this, my BBS shows the phone going into deep sleep normally but the drain with data on is immense even in deep sleep. Your initial findings already point to the most likely source of the problem. Given the varying opinions on this(some say it's fine I others don't agree), is it possible we have the same device but different hardware revisions, some of which are much more power-friendly than others? Because for the life of me I couldn't NEVER anything more than a day from kernel 3.x(CM10) but some people claim they could get upto 3-4 days on light use!
Sent from my Wonder powered by CM10
I don´t think it has something to do with different hardware revisions, else it wouldn´t matter which kernel is in use. But it does.
There is for sure something strange going on. I´ve additionally installed BetterBatteryStats and now the phone started keeping very often in awake mode. Not sure this has something to do with this app, because it didn´t happen when I had it installed on an older CM9 release.
However I can´t find any suspicious processes that are causing this. But to be sure I will have to go back to RC2 to compare with.
So here my results:
Within of 5 hours it keept Awake for 25 minutes.
BBS also says NO Data Connection and No or Unknown SIgnal during that time
But I´m sure it was connected to the radiostation and made a short testcall.
About wakelocks:
KernelWakelocks:
"mmc0_detect" 4m 32s
"DPRAM" 3m 11s
"alarm_rtc" 2m 21s
"PowerManagerService" 1m 36s
"radio-interface" 1m 10s
"alarm" 36s
"mmc1_detect" 13s
Partial Wakelocks:
AlarmManager 44s 997 Counts
GSM 20s 4 Counts
ActivityManager-Launch 18s 104 Counts
sleep_broadcast 4s 23 Counts
RILJ 2s 146 Counts
*backup* 1s 109 Counts
NotificationService 1s 113 Counts
Ok I´m back to RC2 and am having some results from BBS to compare with.
After fully charging the battery I unplugged the phone and left it over night at the same place I´m always leaving. So the conditions were the same like with RC6, though in RC6 there were no apps exept BatteryMonitorWidget and BetterBattery Stats installed.
To make it short the results are nearly identical. Even the Awake time is almost identical in a period of 5 hours.
There is also the No or unknown Signal entry for the whole time. So I guess this is due to the MobileData being disabled.
But what I´m missing in RC2 is "mmc0_detect" and "mmc1_detect" in the Kernel Wakelocks. They are not showing up there.
So now we need some other results to compare with my results.
Been using this phone for 1 and half year now..is it normal to have a battery life of 5 hours with 3G on? Currently using cm10
I think the 3.0 kernel really makes a big difference in a negative way in regards to the battery life.
To fight against this, I have used the following settings for some success:
Conservative + Row... still very fluid with Yoon Chronos
245 - 1024 MHz
Screen off after 30 secs
Under volt
Its much better than before, but still I would like more battery life. Probably 8 hours with heavy use up to 16 hours lite.
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda app-developers app
Agree on that. I tried now RC6 together with hadis chronos kernel and the consumption is the same like with Arcos 3.x kernel.
The "mmc0_detect" and "mmc1_detect" entries also appear with hadis chronos kernel. Not sure they are responsible for it, but they didn´t appear with 2.6 kernel.
So what I can say for sure it´s not the governor but something else in the 3.x kernel and so far these mmc detect entries are under suspicion.
First of all, sorry for not testing against the two kernels; there's a major project going on in my office, and I totally can't risk to be offline... plus with the random times I'll receive calls, the battery usage might be skewed...

I did some Google search and arrived at the following thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1827676
scroll down to the second post. The OP of that thread noticed that mmcX_detect will utilize a lot of wakelocks if the SD Card is defective.
Since the battery drain issue with kernel 3.0 does not seem to happen to everyone, could people experiencing such drain try the experiments without an SD Card being installed?
Sent from my GT-I8150 using xda app-developers app
No problem pep. I need my phone too during the week, so only can do some tests at the weekend.
So to narrow down this problem we need to know how it works without a SD Card installed and if all who are having this issue are having the SD Cards swapped.

Screenshot from Monday AM. Please ignore the mobile network signal bar, every version of Cyanogenmod 10 I've used has the same problem where it stops logging data after about 10 - 15 hours, but my phone does pretty much always have at least 2 bars of signal where I live and work (split about 60/40 between 2G & 3G/HSDPA)
If it helps, here are the cpu states for the last 55 hours useage:

The best battery saving rom is CM9 with the older 2.6.35 kernel. So for example Arcos CM9 RC2 or RC3, the older Slimbeam ROM or this mentioned SmoothieICS. (The other two ones are just modified and themed CM9 RC2 or RC3) For even better results you need an undervolting 2.6.35 Kernel.
My battery for example lasts 3-5 days with CM9 RC2 and Arcos stock kernel. With my personal uv kernel it lasts even more.

But smoothieics claims it has deep sleep implemented xD. Any way I can get a hold if your custom kernel?

Sure. Just drop me your e-mail via PM and I will compile one with stock voltages you then can adjust with incredicontrol to your needs. It´s because my kernel is preset to extreme undervolting voltages and that might be to much undervolting for your cpu.
Btw Arcos kernel has also deep sleep implemented and all custom kernels are basing on arcos kernel, so not only SmoothieICS is going into deepsleep but all custom roms are doing it as well.

your awake time to screen on ratio suggests to me that your battery life could be far better than it currently is! download WLD or wakelock detector and see what is keeping your phone awake so frequently =). Then u can get greenify to hibernate the app when u r not actually using it =D

Unfortunately the two main culprits are K9 email and ebay, both of which are pretty important for me to have running and not in a hibernated state.
However, from the last charge on my phone I have got 2 days, 4 hours, 29 mins with 12% battery remaining - so could be worse I suppose
Thanks for the suggestion though :good:

1- open dialer
2- type *#9900#
3-choose (change debuge level )
4- well here by stock you will find it at low you have to change it to medium or high and personaly i prefer med. and high for heavy HD games . as you like (change it to med. for normal use )
5- save , close and restart .
6- enjoy
and remember this is working for only stock roms for all samsung galaxy and it will boost your game performance as well some multitasking
if you like please hit thanks it wont take from your time
Thanks for all SGW DEVOLPERS AND SORRY FOR MY BAD ENGLISH
thanks for the tip. :good:

ur welcome
well still trying to know i am not a pro yet
but i think One of the goals of Fast Dormancy is to increase the battery life of a device, by limiting the amount of signaling between the phone and the cell network. But, when Fast Dormancy it is not enabled in the network and is enabled on the phone it ironically works the other way around, and actually drains more battery than before. i hope you got it
thanks, attached link explained everything about it.
learn another code: dial *#0011# get into service mode.

shouldnt it be the other way round.
debugging is seeking for bugs in your phone.
if u set debug at highest priority, cpu has more work to do debugging.
set the lowest, free up cpu for other apps. right or wrong?
so should we leave it at low (default), correct me if i'm wrong.
btw, my antutu benchmark score is 7415.
stock rom gb 2.3.6, debug set at low.

i dont feel any difference, tats why i leave debug at low setting.
my rom is completely stock GB 2.3.6, only mod is boost 3D graphic with AdrenoBooster V0.3.
it only works for GB, simple to install, didnt need to flash.
extract adreno_config.txt file from v0.3 zip, copy n paste to data/local/tmp. done. reboot.
boost 3D graphic from 2000 to 4000 score mark.
openGL ES 1.1 max 56 fps.
openGL ES 2.0 max 16 fps.
