[Q] ? WiFi Tether NO Root ??? - Sprint Samsung Galaxy S III

I've Google searched and searched the forums. I've tried a few from the market as well. Seems that none work on my GF's SIII with 4.1.2 on it. Has anyone found a WiFi Tether solution (with working 4g) that actually works without having to root? I'd love to root but she's bull headed :silly: and doesn't want me "breaking" her phone.

Anyone figure this out yet?

Have you tried usb tether by Clockworkmod? Its on the market, they have a free version so you can install it and see if it works for you
You have to install a client on the computer you wanna tether though, this is how it gets around root

No I haven't. Problem is that a computer is the least likely thing for my GF to tether. She needs it for her tablet and iPod.

Ah, then you can only do wifi tether
And as far as i know, you cant use ANY wifi tether app without root

LoL. I'm quickly realizing that. Sprint locked the SIII pretty well. She has agreed to let me root it. Bit then I realized that my tether app isn't working!

You need to use "Wifi Tether - Treve Mod", treve built it specifically because other tether apps wouldnt work on the S3

You can try fixfi. I think it works for what you want.

Thank you for the suggestions. For now the problem is solved. She agreed to let me root so I installed treve modded tether. Its working for now.
Mod... You are welcome to close or leave this thread open aa you see fit since the original question isn't quite solved yet...

To answer the original, no
Sprint and a lot of manufacturers put locks on tethering, so you can't
HTC especially is notorious for making their devices ridiculously hard to do anything other than what they want you to do...speaking from experience here

You might want to take a look at FoxFi, never tried it but according to the ratings it seems rather good

Not unless they really look into it. If they want to know, they can find out anything. You are far less likely to be noticed on an unlocked phone, though.

There are dozens of tethering apps that require root. Most of them are pretty solid. Lots of recommendations in threads here.

What do you use for tethering?

Just got my T-mo GSIII, and just wanted to see what wireless tethering apps work, if any. I need something to keep me until AOSP roms come to the US GSIII. I'm going away for 2 weeks today, and desperately need internet access for my laptop, but find the fees for tethering rediculous.
Once rooted I use wifi tether from the market, works great.
Try Foxfi it works pretty good

Our just use the native tethering in the phones menu after you root...it's discussed in the development thread.it's never given me a problem. Those apps tend to suck..

Where at looking for a native option like on the sg2 days when you froze a certain app to make it work. Couldn't find anything in that everyone seems happy with the apps which u think they suck as well. There was one thread where they mentioned freezing an app but it broke wifi calling. Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

+1 for FoxFi. Market > Install > Activate Hotspot > Done.
Easy peasey lemon sqeezey.
Wow, Sprint blocked this from the market on my phone and on the desktop it states Foxfi is not available on your carrier. Foxfi does provide an external link though, thumbs up for them.
Not working on Verizon?
First the encrypted boot loader, now no wifi tethering? Really regretting my preorder now, might have to refuse shipment on this and continue to use my Thunderbolt w/ unlimited data and tethering for free

Try using the Market Access app. It will spoof your carrier so you can access the apps available on the market from TMobile or AT&T.

Funny..I came in here to ask the same thing. Wifitether works but it doesn't broadcast the SSID properly. Not even by typing the name in manually can you connect. So, no...it doesn't work in JB. But I also would like tether to work.
I tried all afternoon with many different apps to get some sort of tether working, and was unsuccessful with anything other than "Klink Tether" which is a paid app in the Play store. It is a USB tether and it works very well. Highly recommended.
Cm10. Wifi tether worked on my gs3 if I remember correctly.
Which cm10 won't be too much longer for an alpha for us.

EasyTether works fine. I'm using it for years on all of my phones. It never failed me. I'm using it right now as a matter of fact.
Edit: If you are ok with wired tethering. If you look for Wi-Fi... then I don't know of any way. Yet.

Thanks a lot! and Wifi Tether for root actually works on my 4.1 NS4G. So for those programs to work you have to be connected via USB?

Yes.
Or someone mentioned BT tethering with different app. I don't know since I don't use it.
EasyTether works. It's a $10 app, but there is a free version. Free version blocks all https websites, however.
Just to be clear, this is a USB tether. I don't know of any hotspot hacks yet.
EasyTether also requires a program running on your computer.

II think it used to be cheaper. I don't remember how much I paid. I think it's worth it though. Besides... not so many other options at this time and still much less than one month paying for official hotspot.
You know whats funny....(not really) is while at the Sprint store, every phone that was being sold, the salesperson said. You do understand that illegally tethering will get your contract cancelled, do you understands? .
Asked me too and I was like, huh, tethering, I just go to Starbucks :silly:? (hoping he wouldn't hit the big fat tethering button on my home screen (old phone) he was holding. whoops....
I wonder how exactly can they detect someone tethering?
It's a violation of your contract, so yeah, they "reserve the right to terminate". Same can be said for a lot of things that happen on this forum. Just don't abuse it and they won't bother you.

Will I need to pay the ETF if they terminate the contract?
USB tether is built into the phone. Has Sprint blocked it? It doesn't seem to work for me.

[Q] Tethering to PS3 does not work

So i have a T-Mobile GS3 and its rooted running Deviants Development Frosty Jelly bean. :good::good::good:
and i am using a moded app fo WifiTether. its called WifiTether_TrevE_Mod_11_22_2012.apk (Credit to the Techfanatic9 guy he showed me how to do it) the app runs great and actually i have no problem when i tether to my mac on my windows i had to download a firefox and chrome mod called used agent and change the setting to googlebot. then my internet worked perfectly. since i have T-Mobile i have unlimited 4g and that is great, because im am saving lots of money now that i have tethered rooting.
however when i try to plug it into my ps3 it does not work. at the beginning it did and then it stopped working. do you guys have any idea as to why and what can i do to fix this problem?
Some of these custom roms the devs make on here don't have tethering working i noticed too and the rom i would recomend for you which is guaranteed to have tethering working is the Xtremeperia rom for the galaxy s3 by Jovy in the android development section. I can totally understand your frustration where your other devices try to connect to your phone but they don't get anywhere. I have all you can eat true 4g from tmobile so i enjoy tethering.

Thats why. Its impossible to change a user agent on the PS3. You are completely out of luck with that plan. T-Mobile is blocking the PS3 UA.
Yea all you can eat 4g is hands down awesome. Nothing compares to it. Its even faster than the att uverse I had. Could you give me the link for that rom. I looked for it and could not find it. I want to test it out.

Just as I figured, do you think the might be a way to trick tmobile thru the phone instead of the ps3.
Sent from my SGH-T999 using xda premium
Not only ps3, my it blocks my vita too.
To the person above me, probably. But a ps3 has to build something to change the agent.

Only way I could get it to work is by purchasing a VPN client.
Amazon EC2 micro open vpn free
Amazon ec2 micro open vpn > open vpn android > trevE mod wifi tether > laptop (no UA change)
i run CM10 stable and i reflashed an old linksys router with dd wrt software and turned it into a repeater then i connect it to my phone and tether. i run my ps3, tf700, desktop and other phones off of it.. havent had an issue with cm10 and tethering.

You must be blocking the ability to track your user agent because it's impossible to constantly tether without getting blocked eventually

I've done the same.. I've tried VPN as well but no luck.. I've done it all. To setting APN app to system app, then deleting APN's and restoring from the given "T-Mobile APN" xml file thats here on XDA.. but still no luck.. I'm running T-Mo's Note 2.. Of course i can get the laptop/desktop's to work because of the UA but other than that no luck on my end...
Maybe a different VPN app? I'm thinking if theres a way to change the phone somehow, instead of messing with the PSN or PS3's UA... hmm..
I haven't confirmed the USB tether to computer with router fix yet.. Seeing as my phone won't turn on USB tethering for the life of it.. :/ I can flash DD-WRT to my router if it helps.. any suggestions?
EDIT: Also, I'm on the unlimited 4G plan as well. I've also changed ROM's and no luck.. Running Jedi X8, but going to try other ones that may work better with Tethering.. (I've also tried MIUI as well.. the most current one didn't have any luck either)

What ROM are you using? If its one of the ones in the Development Section, chances are this feature is already good to go without any further tinkering. Most of the devs work this feature into the ROM's. And no its the same data you have when you aren't tethering (that's why carriers are scamming people). My two cents.

Op is allegedly stock, and tethering won't work unless he's on Share Everything or actually pays for tethering.
So OP, pay for tethering, switch to Share Everything, or flash a custom ROM....or root and use Barnacle.
