Man has anybody figured out how to get wifi teather to work?
4.2.1 rooted stock..
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
Yes, it's quite simple. Settings, other, tethering, and there you go.
EDIT: sorry, but i don't understand if you don't know where are the settings or if you can't use it because it doesn't work, mine worked out of the box.
Yeh i can connect to the tethering but it wont use my data

I did some treaks with pimpmyrom.. Gotta wait to get off work to see if it worked
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2
What ROM are you using? If its one of the ones in the Development Section, chances are this feature is already good to go without any further tinkering. Most of the devs work this feature into the ROM's. And no its the same data you have when you aren't tethering (that's why carriers are scamming people). My two cents.

Op is allegedly stock, and tethering won't work unless he's on Share Everything or actually pays for tethering.
So OP, pay for tethering, switch to Share Everything, or flash a custom ROM....or root and use Barnacle.

Ok, now i completely don't understand, he can't use tethering untill he pays, is it? So is the carrier locking the function? What is share everything? Sorry for the dumb question!
WiFi tethering works.. Its just I was trying to use it with my PS vita and it won't work
It works with my tablets just not PS vita for some reason..
BTW I'm on straight talk

It must be carrier specific. I have no issues tethering through WiFi.

Ok.. So here is the deal. My pc, nexus7, and galaxy tab 2.0 work fine when tethering.. But for some reason my ps vita wont work with my galaxy nexus.. But i can get my ps vita to work with my friends moto razr m. Im thinkin it has somethin to do with 4.2

I am looking for a tethering app that will work on the gnex... Any sudgestions?
Just use the ICS built-in tethering?
I am not trying to pay verizon even more money per month...
You don't need to, just use the built in one.

you guys have both used it and not been prompted to pay verizon for it?
I'm not on Verizon
You might want to take a look at FoxFi, never tried it but according to the ratings it seems rather good
I'm on the GSM version for AT&T ... I wanna know if they will notice me tethering lol

Not unless they really look into it. If they want to know, they can find out anything. You are far less likely to be noticed on an unlocked phone, though.

There are dozens of tethering apps that require root. Most of them are pretty solid. Lots of recommendations in threads here.
after upgraded to ICS . Otherwise, I like my new dessert
Maybe I am dumb, but I just tried Foxfi for about 10 minutes and it worked perfectly. I just used the simple hotspot as I have used before. Can you explain what the problem is?
My phone is stock ICS, not rooted. Thanks
My tablet always got direct to tmobile sign up page for tether option.

for some reason, my Foxfi is working now. When activate the Hotspot, it no longer turn on the Mobile Hotspot in phone setting like it did before.
I've seen a couple threads and I'm a bit confused.
I know the new plan doesn't have wifi hotspot... Not like that service really mattered.
Was wondering for those who are on the new plan. Can you still tether?

I'm just gonna put my two cents in, I'm not on the plan, might get the s3 with this plan. But, from my knowledge, there is no way for them to know what's using your data unless you're on a stock ROM.

I was wondering this very question myself.
Tethering is still working for me after I made the switch yesterday. Hopefully I don't get charged though.. even though I don't use tether, it's good to know that everything works on my phone. How would i know I'm being charged for it? I didn't receive any "warning" popups or anything like that before continuing.. do I just have to wait for my next bill??
I wonder if they can develop some methods that could detect your tethering and block it?
Sent from my SGH-T989 using xda app-developers app
I had the tether feature free when i upgrade to 5G and now I'm on this new plan and the rep told me that i still keept my free tether and my other line will have it free as well...
but gosh Tmobile just got bad after they close the calls center with reps I had to talk to 4 people for one simple reason cause none of these new foreign knows what their talking about. so im not sure if i still have the tether will see.

Only by puting an APP on your device. I know a little bit about networking, and thats the only way. packets are packets. the user-agent is the only way to see what type of browser it is. but like i said before, a lot of android browsers use the desktop user agent.
But why would/should any carrier stop it? Especially if you are on a tiered plan. Its YOUR data, use it how YOU want. PERIOD. wethere you are streaming on your laptop, or streaming on your phone and using an MHL conector to your TV, its STILL streaming. Period.

For those unable to tether and being sent to that page, You could try using a different tethering app. Try foxfi, my dad is a tmo employee and doesnt have tethering on his plan, but says tethering works perfectly fine on his stock unrooted t989 with foxfi. I might also recommend cwm tethering.

They need to show that because they need a
fixed number. It's the same with minutes, i remember a while ago they had something like 999999 minutes. That's a long time ago though lol. But do you honestly think you'll use 10000GB lol

Yeah thats from the mobile site? They're probably slowly updating yo hide the number and showing unlimited instead... TMobile aren't exactly the best at web developing... Remember their slow and crappy websites when trying to check your usage. It's a tad better now lol.
Anyways, it looks like there are mixed reviews, but i assume native tethering is no good but some 3rd parties are still good? Keep the feedback coming fellas

I've Google searched and searched the forums. I've tried a few from the market as well. Seems that none work on my GF's SIII with 4.1.2 on it. Has anyone found a WiFi Tether solution (with working 4g) that actually works without having to root? I'd love to root but she's bull headed :silly: and doesn't want me "breaking" her phone.
Sprint

4.1.2

Anyone figure this out yet?
Have you tried usb tether by Clockworkmod? Its on the market, they have a free version so you can install it and see if it works for you
You have to install a client on the computer you wanna tether though, this is how it gets around root
No I haven't. Problem is that a computer is the least likely thing for my GF to tether. She needs it for her tablet and iPod.

Ah, then you can only do wifi tether
And as far as i know, you cant use ANY wifi tether app without root
LoL. I'm quickly realizing that. Sprint locked the SIII pretty well. She has agreed to let me root it. Bit then I realized that my tether app isn't working!

You need to use "Wifi Tether - Treve Mod", treve built it specifically because other tether apps wouldnt work on the S3
You can try fixfi. I think it works for what you want.

Thank you for the suggestions. For now the problem is solved. She agreed to let me root so I installed treve modded tether. Its working for now.

To answer the original, no
Sprint and a lot of manufacturers put locks on tethering, so you can't
HTC especially is notorious for making their devices ridiculously hard to do anything other than what they want you to do...speaking from experience here
Question, are there any roms out there that have a better quality hot spot /wifi tether than others or is this feature just generally poor on this phone?
The reason I am asking is that my original evo had great hot spot quality. I drive back and forth from Houston to San Antonio and with the evo my wife would be able to be connected and work on her laptop the whole way. With this phone she can't.

No not at all just turn it on. Uses your phone number as password but you can change that. Treves has a lot more settings and configuration. This is the sprint hot spot and you just turn the switch to on.

I completely agree, but I thought it mentioned he was having trouble with it. I haven't used either much, but they both seemed to work equally as well when I did use them. The native hotspot is easier to use too.
Driving back to Houston right now and trying to use the native Hotspot. It says the laptop is connected but we're not able to access the Internet. Any suggestions?

Tried to connect using a tablet, same thing, it connects to the phone but no Internet access. Maybe it's just that the phone doesn't have a strong enough signal, hard to believe the signal on my old evo was stronger than on this phone.

Set the password up and enter it. It should work right away. It uses the phone number as the default password but you may need to change it.
