Custom kernels - HTC One X

Many custom kernels are available fior the one x, some of which are beast such as xm kernel or ncx's kernel. I wanted to ask users of both kernels whats the kernel that gives them best battery life. Please specify the version of ur kernel.

You should try them both and decide. I've been using the kernel by Alex which is mostly stock but has sweep2wake. Cheers!

try and test them both of yourself...no point asking others which one to go for...case close and waste of a thread

What exactly is a kernel?

Well I'm used to flashing roms, mods, boot.img 's through recovery and what not but I always see people talking about different kernels, i've tried searching but can't find any explanations of what they actually do and how you go about installed them on the one x? Are there any disadvantages from installing a different kernel,
Thanks for your help

Thanks so do most people tend to change kernels for power management?

It depends. Many custom kernels allow for undervolting, but at the expense of slightly sluggish performance coming out of deep sleep as the CPU ramps up to decent speeds again. Personally, stock kernel is pretty decent but currently using Faux's kernel for the GPU boost while gaming.
Just to confirm, I want to install franco's kernel on android revolution 9.0.0, so do i just install the rom as I usually do, then just flash a new boot.img and flash the kernel and that's it?
Just to add.. it goes without saying. Stock kernels are always the most stable and to be honest seem to be just as good performance and battery life as custom ones, if not better!:what:

Changing kernals.

When developers come up with best ROMs I'm pretty sure they put the best kernel...do we have to still flash new kernals check permutations and combination s..its lame doubt...but id appreciate if somebody can answer..

Yes many developers do as you mentioned especially when tweaking a certain kernel to be very effecient with their ROM, but they still mention sometimes that their ROM is compatible with some other kernels. That means what the developer may have tested and found as best for that ROM could be totally different according to the usage of the user. So just try the kernel that the developer recommends and if you are not satsified then try other kernels until you are satisfied with one
I know this may not be the answer you hoped for but I have always read (and believed) that there is no best ROM and there is no best kernel, only the user can judge according to his/her needs
Your answer was apt..I ve been flashing Roms and have not really experimented with kernels yet..been extremely careful with my device ,dint really want to brick it. Thanks again..could you suggest a good kernel for P A 2.99 beta 7?

Well, I never tried that ROM because I am always using my own compiled one with Trinity Kernel
Probably if you read at that ROM thread here then you will find what others are using with it

Check this to read a nice article about kernels first
Then go to the "Development" section of your Gnex type (maguro, toro, or toroplus) and read the first post of each kernel as suggested by bk201doesntexist to choose the one that suits you

[Q] The best ROM/kernal??

hey yo folks, i just bought me new SG3-i747 and was wondering what is the BEST ROM/kernals? on my GS2-i777 SHOstock3 is what im running since that one is by far the best roms out....i would really appreciated your input, i dont want to ROOT my GS3 just yet until i found out everything about the ROM that i am going to use..
Thanks!!!
You need to head to the development sections and read some threads. They provide insight on the ROM, usually screen shots and FAQs.
As for the best ROM/Kernel, there is no right answer. We all use our devices differently and as such, have different feelings about what makes one ROM superior to another.
My advice would be to read up in development, download some ROMs and Kernels to test, and happy flashing!
There is no such thing as the best rom or kernel. You will need to just try some out to find out which one of each works best for you or your device.

ROM Sense or AOSP???

I need a rom with excellent battery life, the custom rom and already proven not give me good results with the battery, same here with the custom kernel, the phone overheated
any rom that really have excellent performance and excellent battery??
some sense or AOSP recommendation??
Threads like this are not allowed. Try each ROM and see what you like. In general, sense ROMs have better battery life.

my question is which rom has best battery performance, your answer does not help at all...
Have you read the rules or my post? No 'best ROM' threads allowed. Honestly, I think all ROMs are good and the choice becomes quite subjective.

agreed, battery depends on usage a lot more than the ROM you are using, if you want better battery life, get a 3.14 based sense ROM (any you like the features of) and then install a custom kernel, n3o's or xm's then underclock and undervolt your CPU, lower screen brightness or auto values and don't install batter saving apps.
Mate I've not seen much of a difference. The new 4.2.2 though on sense defo has made a difference for sense roms. I think it's much of a muchness.
Ooo i have had an idea...why not
Try aosp
Try sense
And see the results. Im sounding sarcastic and there's a bit there but in reality that's the only way you will know by the way you personally use it like chappy above me said

Kernels

Can someone please explain to me the main differences between faux kernel, glitch and elemental x for stock rom?
i don't want to compare or make a best kernel thread i am rather confused and if someone can give me a short answer that would be much appreciated. Thanks :good:
There are feature lists/changelogs in those threads.
Read them to see what they offer. A lot is the same or similar.
Try out all of them and see what you like best.

Glitch offers slightly more options than elementalx, but both are great kernels.
