Looking for Tip for rooting and custom rom - HTC One X

Hey guys, i need help. I realy want to optimize my battery and my camera, thats all i need and im thinking to use a hq camera mod and a custom stable rom
But can you give me some links how to unlock my bootloader and root my phone. I tried the all in one toolkit from htcdev. but didnt work.
Is there another method? And which one is less risky cuz i dont wanna brick my phone. Or should i wait a lil bit more while the developers make some better progress for making rooting methods less risky and painful
Sent from my HTC One X using xda app-developers app

There is no other way then with the HTCdev site....learn fastboot commands directly instead of a toolkit. Once you know it, its easy !
And what rom are you looking for ...a sense based rom ?
Did you get the unlock code.bin file from HTC ?

I stucked at the first steps when i installed drivers successfully and ran the "boot in to a bootloader" it said the device was not found,
I had a htc wildfire before and i managed to root it and flash some roms without problems,
Can you send me a link with some manually rooting guide please.
And yea some sense based rom like ARHD or the Renovate, (i guess they are sense based lol) any Stable room with good battery life option

Ripping/backing up stock Rom before root

I got a brand new desire phone recently. some how I was lucky enough to get an imported phone with a local licence, how that happened I have no idea.
The thing is I love the current stock Rom I have because it has certain discontinued apps I've been trying to hunt down + the market app which hasn't been licensed in this region yet.
I still want to have root access to my phone. How do I rip the current Rom and root my phone with it? I also want to try and port it over to my old Legend and customize it a bit.
I would also be happy to provide it publicly here or on the shipped roms website if I'm successful. The phone is unbranded and unlocked so there should be no legal issues with HTC or network carriers.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
You can't backup BEFORE rooting but you can AFTER - once you've got your custom recovery on the handset you can use it to perform a backup of your phone as it is onto the SD card so should anything go wrong you can just restore it.
However, you might wanna look at the app I've attached to this reply - it can be used to backup apps to your SD card and doesn't need root. That way you can always reinstall them on newer ROM versions that don't have it
(To install it, extract the file from the ZIP and copy it to your sd card...then open a file manager and install using that)
Thanks, I'll give that app a try. But still there must be some kind of way to rip an image of the Rom? I'm going to need the image as backup and I want port that Rom over to the Legend if possible.
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Without root you simply can't do it as you don't have access to the /system partition
ok i'm a bit confused now, doesn't the root process already include flashing a custom ROM? so if i root the phone so i can access my stock ROM i'm gonna lose it either way becase of the rooting?
if thats the case then how do stock roms even exist publicly? sort of like which came first, the chicken or the egg?
i might be wrong but this is what i understood from the UnrEVOked rooting tutorials i read
Rooting doesnt involve a flash now, so once rooted u can backup the stock, rooted ROM. Then u can flash a custom ROM
Sent from my HTC Desire
This applies to unrEVOked too right?
Thank you so much for bearing with me
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
Yes. If u root using unrEVOked it only roots the phone. U can then do a nandroid backup before flashing a new ROM

Unrevoked dose flash
It flashes a recovery image
Sent from my HTC Desire using XDA App
But it doesn't flash a new ROM so you can back up your existing one before flashing a new one
just to make sure i've been going through some tutorials again and they eventually led me to rootmydroid.com where i asked them about this issue. i got this answer:
"unrEVOked flashes a custom recovery image that is different from the stock one.
If you don’t want this maybe you should try VISIONary (google it)"
I did google VISIONary and it seems to be an app you can install on your phone and root it right on the spot, however going through the comments it doesn't seem to work on the Desire. I'm gonna test it myself on both the Desire and Legend and see if it works. i'll post back here with the results. if i got it working and managed to rip the rom i'll write a guide, i know its simple but it took me quite some searching and reading to get to this point.
VISIONary is an app developed by Paul/Modaco if anyone is wondering
A lot easier to just use unrEVOked - VISIONary was developed for the Desire HD
VISONary worked like a charm for the Legend, MUCH easier than the complex tutorial over at the Legend forums, but the downside is i have to work harder to get a backup whereas if I had rooted using other methods a recovery tool like nandroid would've been automatically installed. now although its rooted i'm still searching for a way to backup the legend.
VISIONary doesn't support the Desire so unrEVOked is the only way to go.
also i seem to have gotten 2 things confused: Recovery and ROM. after quite some reading let me see if i've got down the differences right.
when you say unrEVOked flashes a custom recovery it means it changes the default recovery mode to a custom one like say NANDroid or AmonRA which gives you the option to back up your ROM, correct? the ROM is an image of the OS itself which you can backup/restore with a recovery.
confusing those two made me run around in circles for a while but thanks to that i've learned quite a lot. I'm gonna try unrEVOked on my Desire and search for a way to backup the Legend, i'll ask around on the Legend forum and see where that goes.
i'll post back my results with the Desire here.
thanks Eddy

[Q] One X root - Advice please

I have received an upgrade from my network - Three UK - htc One X
I rooted my unlocked Evo 3D previously, but reading into One X root, I'm finding conflicting information and no straight forward solutions. I have had 2 software updates already - 4.0.4 now. Sense 4.1
Does it matter that I have these updates and that the phone came from the carrier?
Anyone know the best way to get it rooted, so that I can backup the stock Rom before choosing a custom?
Thanks
Altermatik83
UK
Please explain what you want ? Are on complete stock and want to update or are you on a custom rom and want to update ?
And is there still an update available or did you update it to the latest 4.0.4 sense 4.1 ?
I'm a little confused reading your text !
Update 4.0.4 comes with sense 4.1 this is one update not 2 separate updates !
Please give the proper info so i can help you with this
If you want to root you must unlock via HTC dev first . And second there are devs that has made it easy for you .there's apps in the dev section that will do it all for you here's one i found for you http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1604439 and once you install your recovery you would want to make a back up of your stock Rom

It is stock, just thought I'd mention that it updated to 4.0.4 recently. Wasn't sure if it would affect the rooting process.

Hi
Thanks for the reply. Do you have to go the HTCdev route with this? I don't mind doing it a harder way, just the best way. I'm guessing it doesnt matter that the phone is locked to a carrier.

You can still root it following the rooting instructions, there are even video guides for it. It is something everyone can successfully do
If you use that app that I recommended in the previous post HTC dev is built in the app

Any problem with root and using custom roms

Hi all
I am new to root and roms related part
So i want to know it from all of u ( u all experts) that is there any kind of problem (either related to brick or bad perfomance or damage or degradation to the internal ic) with rooting or using custom roms...???
If there any , plz point it out and help me
And is it possible to come back to my orignal stock with all the things as it is as it was before the root?
Thnx in advance , plz help
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Yes you cam go back to stock, and no i have never experienced bad things with rooting and running customs roms. But you have to read the tutorials first to learn about what you need to know and need to do ! Don't go messing about with little to no knowledge !
Read up on fastboot and the commands how to flash recoverys and boot.img files.
These are the steps to follow
Unlock the bootloader at htcdev site
Flash a custom recovery
Make a NANDROID BACKUP of the stock rom
Flash the boot.img from the new rom
Perform a FULL wipe in the recovery
Install the new rom
And safe the stock rom nandroid backup somewhere safe (pc, cloud storage)
Thnx man...!!!
U helped me a lot with rooting , thnx again
One of my frnd said that he had solved a prob of bricked samsung phone with some kind of tiny device...dont know what...bt he was saying that he had done it
Is this possible for htc one x?
And finally one formal question..
Is there any prob if i get stuck and ask u for help?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
No its no problem ! And bricking the hox is almost impossible because we have S-ON devices .... Just check that the battery is full before you start
What is the meaning of S-ON device
I frequently came to know that u guys use S-ON & S-OFF device...what does that mean??
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
S-off is a security parameter, if you have s-off you do not need to flash stuff with fastboot commands. Then you would be able to flash a complete rom including the kernel from the recovery. So no need for a pc !
But s-on is not so bad everyone thinks it is, because now bricking the phone is pretty much impossible
Wooooo...!!!
That means if i dont know exectly how to root ur htc one x then also there is no chance to brick ur device...am i right?
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Note that there is always a chance of getting it bricked ! But the chances are minimal to 0 if you follow the right path
Awsome bro...
Can u suggest the right way which u thinks the best for rooting and installing new rom and meanwhile keeping backup of stock rom for further use if needed to switch back to orignal one...??
Sent from my HTC One X using xda premium
Well the main steps are in my first post of this thread ...
You need to learn about fastboot and the needed commands, here is more info

Want to install ARHD ROM
Hello Mr. Hofs, I am new in XDA site also dont know anything about the installation process. i searched a lot but too much confused. i just want to install a Jelly Bean ARHD custom rom for my HOX. now i am using ICS 4.0.3 and Sense 4.0. still didnt get any update. my bootloader also unlocked. i purchased it second hand so its may be used custom rom. i dont know which custom rom used on my HOX. my HOX CID number is VODAP001. please suggest me how to install ARHD 18.1 version custom rom. please give me full solution of this in easy way. thanks.
Boot the phone and check under settings menu if it says something about the custom rom.
But you need to install HTC drivers and you need the fastboot files. You have to open a command prompt inside the folder on the pc and type there 1 command, and the phone has to be in the bootloader menu. You should see in the bootloader in red text "fastboot usb"
Fastboot getvar version-main
A number should come out and we need that

I'm betting its one of those multi device Roms. You need to find the boot.img in a folder called "ACE"

Not really, I don't think. Apparently there is AAHK2 available, but I don't know much about it as I never needed it.
When I s-offed my desire HD I was htcdev unlocked already, I used the manual method to s-off which for me, wasn't hard with lots of previous experience with my HTC legend.
I don't consider myself a noob anymore (I am still learning though), but im not good enough to ever be a developer either, I'll leave that to the gifted elite.
I know there is quite a few guides in the dhd forums that are really good, I'd suggest you have a look yourself and decide appropriately according to your own knowledge and skill which is best for you.

That is google now. You cannot change it on sense roms to my knowledge. GPE you can used xposed and gravity box to create new "ring" shortcuts.
Thanks, ive actually been looking into the GPE ROM but not sure if i would need S-Off to use it, (S-Off is still kinda confusing) ive tried to use firewater but got a whelp error saying my device wouldnt work, and from my understanding, SunShine is the only thing that can give me S-Off, i will be doing this as soon as i have the 25 bucks to spend lol, id rather have it and not need it rather than need it and not have it

You can flash gpe Rom. Just don't try ruu convert guide. Get soff while you can. You can do all sorts of stuff plus it lets you easily recover from most bricks.
Btw. Don't use toolkits. Learn adb and fastboot commands. They are easy and will make your life a lot easier.

No. Firewater and sunshine are tools for soff. Those are fine. Toolkits flash recoveries, unlock bootlader etc... It's good you did it the manual way. And yes HTC will patch soff method in next update. Ruu are restore files kinda like tar and Odin on your Samsung devices. You can only run one that is made for your device... Unless you have soff. You can truly convert your m8 into any m8 variant. No advantages over just flashing a Rom. But with soff you can upgrade and downgrade firmware and radios. You can remove tampered and red hboot text. You can manualy perform updates with no need to lock bootlader. It gives you full flexibility of the phone.
Once you have soff they can't ever take it away.

As long as your running a Rom no update will be applied. Backup stock before flashing anything! So many people don't do this for some reason. You can flash it if you want. Aosp is still a little buggy on the m8. I would recommend gpe over aosp for now but it's up to you. There are some good sense roms too. I wouldn't flash any aosp without soff. Just in case. I've had aosp soft brick when I try to flash another Rom after it before.

Yea near stock is good for me as im used to touchwiz, so id like to learn the sense system before switching around, i just dont want to make a stupid move that could have been avoided with research, but im also a very impatient person lol ok well i guess ill be flashing that tomorrow after i run sunshine. WWE = world wide English
Changing hboot is often not needed just to flash ROMs. However Android 4.4.3 (HTC software 2.22) based ROMs (ARHD 10.2 is one) happens to be an excepton; as you will need to flash what is known around here as the "firmware package" which includes hboot, radio, and other things. If you don't flash the firmware, you will likely get some serious bugs on 2.22 ROMs, including long boot times, as well as broken WiFi and Bluetooth.
You can find the process for flashing firmware below. I used this one:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/att-htc-one-m8/development/att-4-4-3-2-22-1540-3-debloated-sense-6-t2837365
And specifically in the ARHD thread here also (note that for the AT&T version, firmware 2.22.1540 is recommended as you might get NO SERVICE on the international firmware): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=54408500&postcount=9592
Be very careful you understand the process, as flashing hboot or radio is one of the few ways to actually brick the phone.

Just flashing a ROM is actually not that risky (although flashing hboot or radio can be, as mentioned). Its actually pretty hard to brick this phone just flashing a ROM, as long as you make sure to only flash ROMs or other mods only meant for the M8 (GSM).
Just be sure not to flash anything meant for other devices (including the Verizon or Spring M8) as you can actually brick the phone this way if the partitioning is different, and you overwrite any critical partitions such as hboot, radio, or the partition table.
If you stick to the correct ROMs, usually the worst that can happen is a boot loop or failure to boot into the OS (phone stuck at boot screen). But if that happens, its usually not that hard to recover. There can be various reasons and different corresponding solutions. But usually reverting to nandroid, flashing a different ROM, or re-installing recovery (and flashing the ROM again) will fix you up.
Although, nervous is a good thing to be; as it will also mean you will be careful. Which is really half the battle.
Ok guys i have gained S-Off on my device, just a quick rundown, and correct me where needed
1. S-Off is not required for rom changing, but helps
2. I have 4.4.2, any rom that has a different version than this you must first flash the firmware package first, and this can only be done in fastbootusb (if step is skipped can expect lots of errors or bootloops)
3. WWE just means roms from america? (Doesnt seem correct)
4. Changing HBOOT is not required for changing roms, unless the rom calls for it
5. Other than the android version, there is a htc version on the phone as well?
This is kind of overwhelming so far, and im not the best at instruction manuals, im more of a visual learner. And it helps when things are explained in detail, for example, explaining that i need a firmware package helps, but why do i need it, the more i understand the better i can make my decisions. And thanks guys, this is huge help, ive always come to xda for help, this free community works better and quicker than anything ive tried
*HTC One M8 AT&T, Android Version 4.4.2, Unlocked with htcdev.com, Rooted, S-Off, TWRP installed, Stock ROM with Xposed Framework (Current Device)
*Galaxy S4 AT&T, Android Version 4.3, rooted with SafeRoot, Safestrap 3.71 installed, Stock ROM (Girlfriends Device)
Downloaded the unmodified 2.22.1540.3.zip firmware, this is the correct firmware for my AT&T M8 right?
And if im right ill:
1. adb and flash the firmware twice to be safe, then reboot the phone
2. adb flash TWRP recovery, then reflash supersu in TWRP to regain root access
3. Then flash the ARHD 10.1 ROM?
