[Q] Regarding Android 4.2.x and VPN - Sprint Samsung Galaxy Note II

As some of you may or may not know...ISPs are about to put 6 strikes rules into effect:

In light of this I've gotten a payware VPN account from these fine folks: https://www.privateinternetaccess.com/pages/client-support/#android_ipsec_l2tp
Catch being they don't have an Android app. No prob, I'll just use the Android-built-in VPN client. Setup easily BAM!
So what is the problem?
It seems that Android 4.2.2's always-stay-connected option for VPN's is broken. I try to select it, it tells me my VPN must have DNS info (which it does have entered). Does not click. So what can I do?
If y'all have a fav VPN client with always-connect that supports IPSEC/L2TP PSK I'm all ears.

A bump. Other annoyed people figured out how to make my VPN service work using OpenVPN with always-connect. I used the instructions located here:

I don't do anything crazy on my ISP at home so I could care less about the strike rule stuff. I do use FeatVPN though on my phone when I'm out and about to tunnel back to my house for data usage. I only use it when I'm on a public wifi as I do not want anyone sniffing my traffic when I'm broadcasting it to the world. When I'm on 3G or 4G I don't use it though as it is already secure.

Well, strictly speaking 3g and 4g are only secured over the wireless end... After the data hits a tower, anyone receiving said data knows exactly who and where you are.

Actually a vpn style connection is used from the site over the backhaul providers network back to Sprint. But if you have access to the network and the means to do that then scooping my data is the least of my worries as you have access to much more including my entire account information with sprint and everyone else in the area.
I am talking about script kiddies sniffing traffic on public wifi, which is easy and takes only a 5 minute training via YouTube. The other scenario takes a bit more than a video on YouTube.

Weird wifi-tether problem...

I'm having trouble getting wifi tether to work with 4G. It was working fine yesterday, and nothing has changed between when I last used it and now. The weird part is, when connected to 4G and tethered I can go to any Google site, but nothing else will load. When I'm connected to 3G everything works. I thought maybe it was that wifi tether is set to use Google's DNS and perhaps Google was having issues, but why would they work for 3G and not 4G. Do you think Sprint/Clearwire is blocking Google's DNS in an effort to curb unpayed tethering on 4G? Any other ideas?
Edit: I've tried a few different free DNS services and the same thing happens with all of them. No connection issues on 3G, but ONLY Google pages will load via 4G, regardless of which DNS service I'm using. This is a very strange problem....The only two things I can think of is Spring/Clearwire blocking DNS services or there's some sort of bug on the 4G network at the moment.
I'm seeing the same issue, and I did the same troubleshooting steps. It's almost as if they are inspecting http headers and checking the MAC against some database. Hopefully something is just broke on Sprint's side, though.

Hey Guys, glad I found this post. Thought I was going crazy. Everything is fine on 3G but only google sites and certain non picture portions of other websites will load on 4G.
Strange thing is that all websites are fine on the phone itself while on 4G.
Heard someone that's using the paid sprint hotspot is having the same issue, so I'll keep my fingers crossed that this is a temporary issue.

What? You do realize that the only MAC Sprint ever sees is that of the phone, right? As for inspecting headers, not only would that be trivial to get around, but it would also be likely to cause breakage in third-party browsers as the whitelist would likely not be complete. Reliable browser detection via HTTP is near impossible. That also would have no effect on non-HTTP traffic, IMAP e-mail or an XMPP instant message connection for example.

I believe there is an individual MAC for every radio in the phone, so you would have a unique MAC for your cell radio, wimax radio, bluetooth radio, etc. Also, I don't believe he's referring to the browser's identity info, but the packet headers that contain DNS/tcp/etc. info that all network services use. That would have an effect on ALL traffic, and it clearly does as nothing works expcept most google services.
I have been usb tethering with CM7 since GB6 and it would switch back and forth between 3G and 4G without any problems. Pre GB roms would require google tether which would only work on 4G.
I am now experiencing the same dead 4G tether and am not droping back to 3G since the 4G signal is good. Yep like everybody else the phone by itself is connecting and browsing.
All tether traceroutes and pings seemed reasonable. Flashed back to an earlier working release and it also failed. I have not tried any port other than 80 at this time.

I just added the Sprint HotSpot to my account and I can confirm that it's working flawlessly with 4G. Even with the HotSpot feature on the account, wireless tether will not work.
Imap works, SMTP works, ftp works, ftp via browser (port??) or any other browser activities do not work while tethering on 4G.
Port 80 and/or tethering via browser is hosed.
What wifitether version is everyone using? I'm using 2.0.5
Well, I got home connected to 4G and tethered to my laptop. Everything worked. Might be dependant on what tower you're connected to. I'm using wifi tether 3.0 pre11, but had the issue with 2.0.7.

I believe you're correct. I downloaded 3.0 pre11 and still nothing. Strangely enough it would allow streaming of an Amazon video on the browser but it worked on 2.0.5 as well. I wonder what clearwire is doing on their end. Does anybody have any ideas on circumventing it?

I didn't go into much detail since I was posting from my phone, but allow me to expound now. Wifi-tether does nothing more than NAT your internal network to it's live IP address, whether that be on 4G or 3G. Both of these radios have the physical addresses that would not be hard to trace on a cellular network. When the packets are transmitted, as is the case with any packet transmission, the only information that gets changed as the packet passes through the NAT is the IP address. All of the other information stays the same. Now, in terms of most traffic, this isn't a big deal, but with HTTP and HTTPS traffic, the stream of data sent contains the header of the browser sending the request. Since the NAT doesn't mask this data, it's sent out into the wild blue yonder (Sprint's Clearwire WAN) where the capability of inspecting the packet header is very easy to do with most enterprise grade equipment. Now, while any blacklist of headers will inevitably be incomplete, a very simple whitelist of 'known' headers - such as mobile browsers on the market and the included browser on the phone - can be implemented with a few short lines of code. Now, while it might seem trivial, how many users are going to attempt to obfuscate or change their packet header identifiers just to get online? They'll give up, use another connection, or just view the pages on the phone.
I tested this for awhile today, using multiple different browsers on my PC and got nothing. I opened up a VPN connection to my workplace, and routed all my traffic through that (that is, encrypted in an IPSEC tunnel) and the internet worked fine. The most brilliant part, from Sprints point of view, is that the HTTP session is never actually 'closed', just kept in a perpetual waiting state where no data is transmitted. If this is all a fluke, it's the best bandwidth saving fluke Sprint could ever dream up.
All in all, I'm really really hoping this is a snafu, but all signs are pointing to sprint catching onto our usage, which is a huge uh-oh.
edit: I was still able to ssh and telnet via my tether, and open up the VPN and receive email, which points to this being a targeted attack on HTTP. Double uh-oh.
Firefox, IE, Opera, Epithany, Chromium, Midori and Konqueror all fail.
Port 80 traceroute is good.
Does anybody knnow of an agent switcher that can be used?
What about downloading Adfree and installing the host files. That fixed my data issues on my Evo.

Aha... finally found some people who are having the same issues, 4g just stopped working with wireless tether about 3 days ago. 3g works just fine, and 4g connects and is pushing data to the phone, but no webpages are loading on my laptop when 4g is on... I'm out of 4g range right now, but will check back in when I'm back in range tomorrow.
It's working for me again. I'm replying to this thread using my wifitether uder 4G.

Basically how can Sprint find out if your wireless tethering for free. If you're rooted and using the free wireless tether app will going over a certain amount of data a day give them a alert. Thank you.

No Sprint will not be notified of going over a certain amount of data in a day, nor is there a cap for data usage when using the wireless tether app.
I just checked my 4G usage for this month since I started tethering on Sprint.com and it's at 17GB whereas before it was like 4-5GB. It's partially the tethering but it's also because I've been using the Watch ESPN app a lot this month. Is there any way that Sprint will kick me off? It's all Sprint data and not roaming since it's 4G. Obviously they can tell I'm using a ton of data but has anyone ever been kicked off for using too much data? How much data have other people used?

The only way that you are going to get kicked off for using too much data is if you are roaming when you use the data. And even then, more than half of your data usage would have to be while you are roaming. So, if your total monthly data usage is 4 gigs, and 2 1/2 of the gigs are used while roaming then you will most likely get a letter from sprint letting you know that they have terminated your account. This is commonly seen when a 00001 or other hacked PRL is loaded on your phone which causes you to constantly roam. But long answer short, you'll be fine...

Basically, when you tether you are sending your phones internet through wifi to your computer/device. Sprint only sees that you are using your internet on your phone, not where it is going. When you pay for the "tether service" from Sprint, there is a different way that you hook up to the internet. It is a separate service rather than just sharing your phone's internet connection with your computer/device.

Not exactly true. When you launch the unhacked Sprint Hotspot app it asks the Sprint Server if your phone is authorized to use the app. If you have not subscribed it errors out. The hacked app has the authorization check removed. When the hacked version launches it just shares the phone's internet connection with external devices. Sprint has no way of knowing that the internet traffic is going anywhere beyond the phone.

Also not exactly true.
One thing they can see is the IPs of the pages you are going to, and different browsers make different page requests,like not pulling up the mobile versions of pages. (yes, I know this can be modified to pull up the nonmobile version.)
Not only is the tcp/ip page request header on an Android browser is completely different than say chrome/firefox/etc, but other applications use the same technique, like IM/BT/skype/etc.
If sprint really GAF, they could very easily see that you're tethering, from what I know.

Sorry to bump an old thread, but Sprint doesn't know. What another user mentioned above is partially true, they can find out if you are excessively roaming. That will notify them, then they can investigate further and find which websites you're visiting etc. Then they will begin sending you letters.

Yes Sprint can tell you tether
Ive been getting a text msg from Sprint, notifying me of doing something that isnt in my plan, they claimed I was "tethering" and setting up a "mobile hotspot" well I was sometimes, and btw I use xbox for LTE, so when they see alot of data being used like that, they will investigate, ive been with sprint for 10 years. That doesnt matter to them as they threatened to cut off my service, so I asked if they had any unlimited tethering/mobile hotspot and all they have is 6gb/month for $50 which is useless. so apparently they said I was going to Weather.com and NOAA website to much lol they couldnt even see that I had an Xbox One on LTE for past 2 months, and then you get an arab or some mexican that can barely speak english that doesnt know anything about phones/mobile development trying to tell you that you are tethering, the person I spoke with literally had to lookup the definition it was pathetic, sprint is going downhill as soon as I find another carrier with unlimited im flying to theyre store.

I work for a company that provides free WiFi for guests and employees. In order to access the WiFi network, you have to acknowledge that you agree to the terms and services.
When I arrive for work each day, I pull up any random web page and am taken to an internal web page where I have to acknowledge the terms and services of the WiFi service. After doing that, I am granted access to the network. Unfortunately, the access does not remain in place for the duration of my shift. Even though the Evo shows that I am connected to the guest wifi network, I can't connect to the internet unless I pull up a browser and get back to the page where you acknowledge the terms and services. I may have to do this 5 or 6 times a day to connect back to the internet.
Does anyone know of a way to prevent getting kicked off of the guest wifi network using an app or some other method?
I do this at work too. My question for you is do you sit in one place all day long and you still lose the authentication?
I only lose mine because I travel around between floors or leave the building, breaking the connection, requiring me to authenticate when I connect again.
My workplace also does this, however it is timed for 15 mins to disconnect each user.
My phone tells me that the network requires a browser login to gain access, the first time. After I'm logged out it stays connected but I then have to re login.

deathsled, I do move from place to place at work . . . I had not considered that that could be causing loss of connectivity. We have multiple wifi access points in the department and in my area.
Given that info, would there be any way to continue to hit the same access point in a smaller area, without requiring re-authentication?
I had wondered if there was a program running in the background that required low bandwidth, but continual, that it could keep me connected at all times. Something like streaming music may be too much bandwidth. I was looking for any other ideas out there.
In case anyone cares, after flashing Classic v0.0.9 rom (was on v0.0.6) I no longer have loss of connectivity issues. Thanks Tommy!

Closed Wifi networks preventing data connection.

Is there any way to prevent your data connection from being lost when a secured Wifi network is within range. I don't understand why the phone gives a secured wifi network preference over your carriers network... effectively preventing any data connection until you turn off wifi.
Just one example of this annoying problem came when I was navigating to a job location and a road was closed. GPS could not reroute me because I was in a residential neighborhood picking up lots of wifi networks. All the them were secured. So... in order to reroute I had to toggle off my wifi so that my phone would go back to connecting through my carrier.
Why do phones do this? Until your device obtains an IP address from the wifi hotspot it should not bypass the carriers data connection. Is there any way around this that doesn't require constantly turning wifi on and off?

Never had this problem.... My GS3 has always ignored secured and unsecured wifi networks unless I specifically request to connect to them. The only thing I can think is that its trying to connect to the same SSID that you're using at home like "netgear" or something. If that's the case, shame on you for not changing your default SSID at home.
If not, what setup are you on? Stock/rom/kernel etc.

When I open an app like Facebook or tapatalk it just hangs. If I open a web browser I get redirected to one of those sign in pages. As soon as I turn off wifi I go back to 4G and browse as normal.
This happens on every phone I've ever owned including my wife's phone, parents phones and brothers phone. I just figured it was something everyone dealt with.... Was hoping for a work around.

They can't hear me - wifi calls

Been having some issues with callers not hearing me. I tried swapping out the modems (can't remember exactly which ones but can figure it out if necessary), tried different kernels (while I was on TeamSonic rom), and switched from Sonic to FrostyJB and still happening.
I am on wifi calling at my home (crappy signal). It happened on all calls this morning. I made all the above saps and changes this morning as well. I tried a call when I left and was outside of wifi and call worked fine.
This sound like a defect or setting thing? Don't see a lot of settings in the Wifi Calling menu.

There are a few things that could be the problem. You need to determine if it is the phone or the wifi.
What kind of signal are you getting? Are you able to test your wifi for internet? Is this all of a sudden, meaning were you able to use wifi calling without problems prior to this recent problem?
I always had problems with wifi calling so I never use it on my HTC one s and this one too

It has been happening more frequently lately but I am not really sure on a time frame. I don't make gobs of calls. I have had the phone for about a month or so and didn't have any problems early on. I have tried a few different ROMs but I wouldn't call myself a flashaholic.
My wifi signal at home is pretty decent. My speeds are usually around the 18 - 19 range. No problems with internet. The calls connect pretty quickly.
I do have a cell-fi (sp?) unit on the way from t-mobile which my help but I would just like to try and figure out if something is off with the device.

Information update:
I just made a call from my office (same no cell signal and decent wifi) and call worked fine. Wifi speeds here are a bit slower, usually around 8-9.
Haven't changed router or modem at home. Time Warner Cable is the provider.
Will check my son's phone tonight. He also has the S3 but being a teenager, I am not entirely sure he knows how to make an actual phone call...
Does the problem seem to happen at the same times of day? Depending on how your isp is set up, heavy network traffic can cause the issue. Also remember that your voice going out is like uploading a file on that upstream data is going to be slower than downstream.
Is your cable modem or router kind of outdated? Last year I upgraded my modem and saw a huge improvement. The DOCSYS 3.0 tech is a lot faster than a DOCSYS 1.0 rated modem can handle.

Today it happened around 8:00 am (EST) and again around noon. I'll check the upload speeds as well.
I swapped out the modem about 4-5 months ago. Not sure of the make. It is the one Time Warner provides. Haven't noticed any major problems with our PC though.
Router does have a few years on it.
I suspect that you're getting one way voice translation... the router is forwarding the incoming voice traffic to your phone but failing to do the same for your outbound traffic. I have a Cisco enterprise class router at my house (I'm an IT geek so I *play* with it) and until I opened up a bunch of ports to a bunch of sites I saw being blocked in the router logs I was having the same issue.
I asked T-Mobile for a list of voice gateway IP addresses at their end but none of the tier 1/2 techs were ever able to give me any useful info regarding IP addresses or ports... The phone keeps finding new IP addresses it wants to connect to so in the end I gave up on getting wifi calling working reliably and have mine set to prefer cellular.
A SOHO or Home router ought to automatically open up the necessary ports but I would suggest looking at the manufacturers web page to see if there's a firmware update for your router. If there is, apply it and see if that fixes the problem. Else buy another one and see if that resolves it. If it doesn't then you can always take it back.

I thought it was just me that had a wifi problem
One thing to keep in mind is you HAVE to have a cell connection to use wifi calling. It's possible the signal is so weak it's dropping once you have the phone up to your face and it's moving around and stuff. Try using speakerphone with the phone on the desk or wherever you have some signal. You should also try to get a signal booster from tmo.
Definately check to see if there's any firmware updates for your router like ronin said.
Is it a G or N router? If it is N, check your other devices that connect to it as well. If anything connects to it at 802.11G then all connections with the router can be throttled down to G speeds. If so disconnect the G device, reconnect your S3 and try it again.
Also have you restarted the modem and router recently? Unplug them both from power for about 15-30 seconds. Then plug back in and give it a minute or two for everything to reconnect.

I didn't know about the cell connection requirement. The cell signal at my house is far north of crappy but the signal in my office is bad as well and no issues. I do have the tmo booster (cell-fi?) on the way. Hopefully that will fix it.

Someone told me once they'll send you one for free if you have lousy coverage at your home. Is that true?

Woah.. holding my phone landscape killed my WiFi calling. WiFi went from 3 bars to 1 and WiFi calling disappeared. Holding the phone the other way fixed it.....I just had an iPhone 4 problem

If you had good credit they will and you have to have SOME service. Like 1 bar or w.e.

I suspect that you're getting one way voice translation... the router is forwarding the incoming voice traffic to your phone but failing to do the same for your outbound traffic. I have a Cisco enterprise class router at my house (I'm an IT geek so I *play* with it) and until I opened up a bunch of ports to a bunch of sites I saw being blocked in the router logs I was having the same issue.
I asked T-Mobile for a list of voice gateway IP addresses at their end but none of the tier 1/2 techs were ever able to give me any useful info regarding IP addresses or ports... The phone keeps finding new IP addresses it wants to connect to so in the end I gave up on getting wifi calling working reliably and have mine set to prefer cellular.
A SOHO or Home router ought to automatically open up the necessary ports but I would suggest looking at the manufacturers web page to see if there's a firmware update for your router. If there is, apply it and see if that fixes the problem. Else buy another one and see if that resolves it. If it doesn't then you can always take it back.

I believe you are right on. I could not get my Wifi Calling to function properly at work. Text works great, sending and receiving. My phone rings when I receive a call, but I cannot hear anything, neither does the caller. Similarly, when I dial a number, the other phone rings, but no audio is heard on either end. I called TMobile Tech Support and they read me a memo from Samsung that this is a "Known Issue" with "one-way audio" on wifi calling. A salesperson in the store read to me the same memo. Interesting thing is when I got home, everything works, both voice and text. I tried it at another wifi location and everything works also. But not at work. I am convinced it is a problem with the network at work. Puzzle is that Wifi Calling works great on my HD2 with Custom Rom at work using the same enterprise network. But I would hate to keep swapping the micro sim from the S3 into a sim adapter into the HD2 just to get reception at work. I was hoping the upcoming JB upgrade will solve the problem, but reading the above explanation makes me worried now. Anybody out there with any work around?

You'd have to have access to the networking equipment at your work to really know the answer why... Short version is that Home routers/firewalls reflexively open ports when a device inside the network tries to access an IP address. UPnP is an example of this... Enterprise class routers/firewalls don't do this as it's considered insecure. So, you have to know what ports the traffic is coming from/going to and allow traffic on those ports. You also want to know what outside IP address it's destined for so you can lock down that traffic to just certain destinations, not the whole internet...
So, if it doesn't work at your office then there's likely very little you can do to fix it unless you're in the IT department or have a really good relationship with the Network Administrator of your IT department.

What would be the point of Wifi calling if you have a cell connection? I've used Wifi calling since my MT4G and that's a total crock of BS
There would be NO POINT to Wifi calling if you have a cell signal.. common sense...
