same thing happens to me (since way back on JB 4.2.1), found your post from google trying to find the solution myself. well, i'm on AOKP (JB 4.2.2) on AT&T Galaxy S3, so i dunno if it'll work for you, but this (half) works for me, maybe it'll work 100% for you: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1641981
there's an APK there that actually gets past entering ur pin and finishes setting up. only problem is now it constantly FC's. i can listen to new messages but as soon as i try to change out of the menus it'll FC on me. maybe you'll have better luck. otherwise, i'm just dealing with it the way it is since it at least works (i'm not a big fan of YouMail and Google Voice).
and you can thank this guy's post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=38411628&postcount=23694

Hey Everyone! So I'm having this problem where my phone will NOT ring or show that someone is even calling. The only way I found out that someone called me is when they text me asking why I didn't answer them. Well, my simple answer (that people are starting to not believe) is that my phone didn't even show that someone was calling... This wasn't so much an issue before because they could always text me if they needed to get a hold of me. But now after to applying to many places for a job, I kinda need it to ring. I also have another issue and that is that texts will not receive either. The only way I can get them is through Google Voice. This wasn't such a big deal to me but I would like to know if that can be fixed too. I have never had this issue until after I tried CM9. Since then I have tried many other ROMs to see if i still had this issue. I did.
The other ROMs I tried are:
MIUI v4
AOKP
Clean GB
Marcusant v3
MIUI Gingerbread
CM7
Legendary
What my current setup is:
ROM: AOKP
Android version: 4.0.3
Baseband Version: S700.0.5S.EI22
Kernel Version: [email protected] #6
Build Number: IML74K
Mod Version: aokp_epicmtd_build-28
Theme: NONE
PLEASE!!! ANY HELP IS APPRECIATED!
Odin back to stock EL30. Follow the procedure in the How to restore a semi-bricked Epic thread. Test it there. If it works root and flash, do not restore data.

I did this and (sorry for taking so long to get back to you but i wanted to make sure that it was happening often and not just once in a while) it worked for the phone ringing but the messaging, although im receiving them, they come late. sometimes VERY late like a whole day later. This is not cool and would really like to find a solution because i dont want to have to be stuck on stock :'( Oh yeah btw the ROM i flashed this time was AOKP. Thank you for the help!!
I believe late texts are a symptom of carrier network issues. It should clear up when the maintenance is finished.

I am having the same issue with the phone calls either coming in late or not at all. I test this by calling my number from a land line. It takes 4 - 5 rings before the phone will start ringing, if it rings at all. Most of the time, Google Voice answers for voicemail.
I remember back in the days when I had my Windows phone, there was something that we could do to have the phone poll the towers more often to make the phone ring faster. I know that this faster response to phone calls came at the expense of more battery usage. I wonder if some of the battery saving tweaks done by the ROM developers has had a negative effect on the phone calls coming in.
I have tried updating my PRL and whatever through EL30, then reflashing with out restoring any data. Still having the issue.
Thanks.
this same thing is happening to me and everyone else in my neighborhood that has sprint. Its one specific tower that's causing the issues. I know this because once I connect to a different tower the issue goes away. I contacted sprint about it and they said they would fix it when they do the network vision upgrades, which could be a ways away.

I kinda thought it was a problem with the network and so i called them and last time they sent me a airave and it didnt solve the problem. I still think its a problem with sprint overall and am planning on calling them.
I have the same exact problem. I have even had the phone replaced and it still does it. I only know when it happens because google voice logs the missed call. I have had it happen with a completely stock phone as well as rooted.
It is very frustrating because like you said, people don't believe you when you say that your phone did not ring.
They are actually going to switch my phone again. I know this is not going to fix the problem, but I will play the game!
Please do not credit me. This is someone else's work.
A member on Rootzwiki has seem to find the ultimate fix to slow gps locks and I tried it on my Gnex AOKP 38. I was having extremely long lock times. Around 5-10 minutes outdoors and no lock what so ever indoors.
Here is the thread on Rootzwiki.http://rootzwiki.com/topic/13980-slow-gps-lock-on/page__st__10
Scroll to the bottom and follow the instructions to edit the gps.cnf file. I had to reboot my phone to see the difference but WOW. I haven't even tried outdoors yet but indoors i'm receiving a lock within 5-10 seconds.
Seems to be an issue with Android 4.0.4. Will give it a go on CM9.
Comfirmation?
I haven't really had any problems with Gnex GPS signal lock. But if this improves things then I'm all for it. Can anyone else confirm that this works ok without borking anything?

Instant lock on stock, unrooted, un-f'd-with GSM Nexus 4.0.4. This is why I am done with the ROM scene...stuff like this is a PITA.

I'm telling you guys use faster fix app it is so easy when someone makes a Rom it usually sets there pool for GPS lock to the area they set it, for example Asia or Europe if you want the pool for your continent then you need to set it manually or use faster fix [email protected]@ I'll put screen shots later If you guys need . A example is when I install cyanogen mod it always sets my pool for Europe so I set it back to north America using faster fix BAM instant GPS lock

Not had a problem on b35 got lock even in the moving vehicle in less than a minute. I'm now on b38 but didn't test it yet....

Interesting ... for me Aokp is quite fast to lock ... never more than one minute or within seconds if it's locked in the last few hours. I do use faster fix though so maybe it really works.

If you had data and it took ages to take a fix, make sure Google's location service is checked, it will lock faster.

AGREED! But I am going to deal with it now anyways.
I have been trying to get a APK that will actually work on the Nexus.
And I have already tried Google Voice and it sucks. I simply want VVM back.
It was simple and all I needed.
Is there an APK that will work on a stock Gnex from Sprint?
Do I have to Root?
I am a total noobie with this phone. Last phone I rooted was a Moment before my EVO 4G.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Steve

Did you find the vvm.apk? Just install it and it should be fine. What's the issue?

Is this one from CM9 the one that works on the Nexus? http://epicaokp.blogspot.com/2012/05/aokpcm9-fixed-sprint-visual-voicemail.html
I remember getting those notification texts from 9016 on my E4GT. Has that been fixed?
Vvm. Apk does not function. I've installed it 3 times. I get 2 texts from Sprint saying to call some number, but nothing happens.
I am going to attempt to root my phone today..... But I suck at this stuff.... LOL
I simply want the plain old sprint vvm....
Any help would be greatly appreciated....
There was a workaround for the 9016 issue, I think you can blacklist or block that number. I can't remember the exact procedure, but the Heroc guys had it working over a year ago. I switched to Google voice for voicemail and love it, but I know the vvm.apk can work on aosp roms

ALMOST There??
The site you linked to has a working zip for sprint VVM, (although it was a slightly older version, and I got a "404 not found" error, I managed to find it) I got it to flash on cwm touch to BB8 for Gnex... I flashed it, wiped cache and dalvik and ran a fix perm on it... It PROVISIONED! Yay, right?? Nope, while I am recieving 9016 messages now, and even alerts through the app reminding me that my Voice-Text Trial is about over, I still cant get the voicemails to receive and notify through the app...
I sent a vm to the:
activate @ vvm. sprint .com
using the app and that went through just fine...
So does anyone know how to integrate this the right way so that it will really work?
I am not receiving any error messages at all... All others I have tried give some sort of error. This one has not, so I am sure there is something small I am missing...Any takers?
Going to try a Handsfree Activation using the Sprint Diagnostic App I flashed yesterday... Will report back...
I want VVM! LOL
I recently upgraded to Cyanogenmod from the vanilla android of my Sprint S3. I've had no issues with it since I've gotten it running until suddenly today it refuses to send text messages. It receives them just fine but for some reason refuses to send? I found another thread on this but it just confused me more and seemed to be talking about non CDMA phone (an Italian Evo 3d) and it doesn't make sense for my issue... yet it seems to be the same.(Reference)
Synopsis:
1. I could send and receive fine for an entire week til today.
2. I can still receive texts but cannot send them.
3. Sometimes it will send a single text through? That could just be a fluke.
4. Turning it off and back on didn't help.
Thanks!
Update: The error code associated with it is Error 34. No clue what that means, Googling has shown poor results.

Q: Did you dirty flash over?
Sent from my SPH-L710 using xda premium
It all started last night, my phone no longer connects to the Sprint network. When I try to make calls I get this error "The number or code you entered is incorrect" when someone calls me they get the same error. I have flashed a stock image through odin and its back on ICS but I get a SIM card error and the phone refuses to connect to Data. I am at a loss on what could have caused this but my phone is useless at this time and I am pretty pissed. My phone worked great no problem until I attempted to use Google Voice and that is when I lost Data and Voice function. I have removed my phone number from google, disabled GV and even changed my phone number but the problem still exists. If someone could shed some light on my problem I would greatly appreciate it!
PS: Sprint claims its a tower issue but my other devices work just fine.
Try ##72786# in the dialer. It'll force the phone to reactive everything

How is being rooted going to fix this?
I have gone 100% stock all the way to ICS. I then rooted, updated to MD4 including the radios and firmware. I have data now but still no calls or texting. I have edited the MDN and forced reactivation. They guy last night said it was a tower issue but I'm now 35 miles away and I highly doubt the same problem exists here. My girlfriends phone works no problems at all. It has to be an account issue but no one at Sprint cares to help...

I don't see the prl/profile update fixing it as the dialer trick shouldve covered that. The other suggestion above might help tho. I'm also thinking maybe dialing *720 and *730 to make sure gv is all the way diabled.
Just get this when I make calls... "The number or code you dialed is incorrect, message 7 switch 180."

Have you ever changed your number on sprint b4? Maybe it's a glitch on their end due to the number change just not settling in yet
I did about 2 years ago... all I can do is wait til they ooen and give them a call. I had to bring my girlfriends phone to work with me so I can check in with the office. Guess ill give them a ring in a few. Its just odd that data works without an issue. ..
Sent from my SPH-L710 using Tapatalk 4 Beta
If your data is working fine then I have to call it their issue for sure. Which would make sense as data could be working based off of account info rather than your number. Where as if you make a call your actual # comes into play. Could be wrong here just a theory. But best of luck I'll post if I think of something else but I bet u this fixes itself
Ill keep ya posted, thanks for your help.

Glad it's working and for future reference I found this looking on sprints site.
"Looking at the tower nearest you it appears to be performing properly When a tower goes down you will not hear any error message.* The message* is a function of the switch where the wireless system connects to the wire system.** Do you get the message with every number you call or just some numbers?* Can you call (888)-546-0314* That is a sprint test number."
